WHAT ARE WE LEARNING TODAY.
WHAT IS AN ESSAY?
WHAT IS PARAGRAPH WRITING?
WHAT IS EXPANSION OF IDEAS?
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ESAAY,A
PARAGRAPH AND EXPANSION OF
IDEA.
WHAT IS AN ESSAY?
• It is an organized piece of writing which
focuses on single topic.
• It is organized around a general idea or thesis.
• It is short literary composition on a single
subject, usually presenting the personal view
of an author.
(*thesis-A thesis statement focuses your ideas into one or two
sentences)
FORMAT OF AN ESSAY
PARA-1 INTRO. TOPIC THSESIS STATEMENT
PARA -2.INTRO. TO FIRST IDEA WITH

PARA-3.INTRO. YOUR SECOND SUPPORTIVE

PARA-4.INTRO. YOUR THIRD SUPPORTIVE

RECAP THREE MAIN SUPPROTIVE IDEAS.
OVERALL CONCLUDING STATMENT
HOW TO WRITE AN ESSAY?
WHAT IS PARAGRAPH?
• PARAGRAPH IS GROUP OF SENTENCES EVERY
SENTENCE IS ABOUT SAME TOPIC.
• EACH SENTENCE IN PARAGRAPH MUST GIVE
INFORMATION ABOUT THE TOPIC.
EXAMPLE :FIRST,CANADA HAS AN EXCELLENT
HEALTH CARE SYSTEM.SECOND,CANADA HAS
HIGH STANDARD OF
EDUCATION.FINALLY,CANADA CITIES ARE
CLEAN AND EFFICIENTLY MANAGED.
FORMAT OF A PARAGRAPH
TOPIC SENTENCE
The main idea.
SUPPORTING SENTENCES
giving idea about main
idea.
CLOSING SENTENCE
Ends paragraph and
relates main idea.
What is expansion of idea?
• Expansion of an idea or expansion of a proverb is
simple and straightforward. It involves 5 easy
steps. They are:
Step 1: Understand the symbol of the words in
the proverb
Step 2: Substitute the meaning in the idea or the
proverb
Step 3: Look for a story or anecdote or example
or illustration
Step 4: Look for similar proverbs or ideas
Step 5: Sum up the paragraph
Examples
• Honesty is the best policy.
• Procrastination is thief of time.
• Rome was not built in a day.
• Cut your cloth according to your cloth.
…….Many more.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ESSAY,A
PARAGRAPH AND EXAPNSION OF
IDEA.
AN ESSAY A PARAGRAPH EXPANSION OF IDEA
•An essay is a formal writing
sample of a given topic
composed of multiple
paragraphs.
•Essays are focused around
a central idea that are
broken up into sub-ideas
which are written in
paragraphs.
•An essay is made up of
paragraphs.
•There will be
disagreements on the
outline of it, but
traditionally this is how an
essay breaks down.
•Essays are focused around
a central idea that are
broken up into sub-ideas
which are written in
•By contrast, a paragraph
is shorter and by virtue of
this does not have as
many requirements.
•While the paragraph
contains a topic sentence
that introduces the
controlling idea.
•however, while the
paragraph is singular in its
function and focus,.
• a descriptive paragraph
may bring in specific
examples that work to
describe some topic.
•. If you want to think of it
in a comparative way, the
topic sentence is the thesis
statement of a paragraph.
•Its generated from
particular ideas or
proverbs.
•In the context of the
proverb.
what the proverb means,
we should look for a
suitable example to
illustrate it.
•‘Do not judge the book by
its cover’ similar to ‘All
that glitters is not
precious’.
Use summing up words or
phrases to indicate that
you have finished the
expansion Let the reader
know that you are signing
off.
• A thesis statement for an essay is longer and more detailed than
the topic sentence at the beginning of a paragraph.
• In a paragraph, each subsequent sentence builds upon the point
made in the topic sentence; in an essay, the first sentence in
each paragraph discusses points made in the thesis statement.
• Paragraphs and essays differ in their length. Paragraphs are
typically between five and six sentences long. They're composed
of a topic sentence and four or five supporting details. Essays
contain at least five paragraphs; they're composed of an
introductory paragraph (which includes the thesis statement), at
least three supporting paragraphs and a conclusion paragraph.
• Both paragraphs and essays must end with a conclusion, but the
type of conclusion differs. Paragraphs must end with a
concluding sentence that states the basic point of the paragraph.
It should not rephrase or reiterate the topic sentence. Essays end
with a conclusion paragraph that summarizes the content of the
essay and reiterates the thesis statement with different phrasing.
THANK YOU.
