2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

11. AN ESSAY A PARAGRAPH EXPANSION OF IDEA
•An essay is a formal writing
sample of a given topic
composed of multiple
paragraphs.
•Essays are focused around
a central idea that are
broken up into sub-ideas
which are written in
paragraphs.
•An essay is made up of
paragraphs.
•There will be
disagreements on the
outline of it, but
traditionally this is how an
essay breaks down.
•Essays are focused around
a central idea that are
broken up into sub-ideas
which are written in
•By contrast, a paragraph
is shorter and by virtue of
this does not have as
many requirements.
•While the paragraph
contains a topic sentence
that introduces the
controlling idea.
•however, while the
paragraph is singular in its
function and focus,.
• a descriptive paragraph
may bring in specific
examples that work to
describe some topic.
•. If you want to think of it
in a comparative way, the
topic sentence is the thesis
statement of a paragraph.
•Its generated from
particular ideas or
proverbs.
•In the context of the
proverb.
what the proverb means,
we should look for a
suitable example to
illustrate it.
•‘Do not judge the book by
its cover’ similar to ‘All
that glitters is not
precious’.
Use summing up words or
phrases to indicate that
you have finished the
expansion Let the reader
know that you are signing
off.
12.
13. • A thesis statement for an essay is longer and more detailed than
the topic sentence at the beginning of a paragraph.
• In a paragraph, each subsequent sentence builds upon the point
made in the topic sentence; in an essay, the first sentence in
each paragraph discusses points made in the thesis statement.
• Paragraphs and essays differ in their length. Paragraphs are
typically between five and six sentences long. They're composed
of a topic sentence and four or five supporting details. Essays
contain at least five paragraphs; they're composed of an
introductory paragraph (which includes the thesis statement), at
least three supporting paragraphs and a conclusion paragraph.
• Both paragraphs and essays must end with a conclusion, but the
type of conclusion differs. Paragraphs must end with a
concluding sentence that states the basic point of the paragraph.
It should not rephrase or reiterate the topic sentence. Essays end
with a conclusion paragraph that summarizes the content of the
essay and reiterates the thesis statement with different phrasing.
