There are about a quarter of a million people in the United States living with spinal cord injuries. In
addition, between 7,600 and 10,000 new injuries occur each year. Nearly half of these new injuries
will occur in young people between the ages of 16 and 30. As a person in this category, I have become
very interested in the research to find a cure for spinal cord injuries and hope to share some of the

am part of the 3.8% of snow skiing accidents.
Now that I have shared a brief overview of the spinal cord and some statistics about spinal cord
injuries, we will look at the past research that has led to the treatments most commonly used today. In
1990, a steroid called dexamethasone was discovered in human trials to preserve some motor and
sensory function if administered at high doses within 8 hours of injury. Surgery used to remove fluid,
tissue, or bone fragments, or to stabilize fractured vertebrae by fusing bones or inserting hardware has
also proven to be one of the most thorough measures to prevent further harm. I received both of these
treatments after my accident, and they are the same that have been used for the past decade. Until
recently, doctors had no way of limiting such disabilities, aside from stabilizing the cord to prevent
added destruction, treating infections, and prescribing rehabilitative therapy to maximize any
remaining capabilities.
Within the past few years, however, scientists have made many new advancements. The United States
Food and Drug Administration has approved 2 electronic systems that regulate muscles by sending
electrical signals through implanted wires, called functional electrical stimulation (FES). Some
proteins have been found to promote nerve growth and restore limb function and sensation when

The curiosity of Artie about Vladek saying that Anja was not pretty, during the fight between Vladek
and Lucia, incites Artie to interrupt Vladek s story of the past. The interruptions that Art Spiegelman
writes into his comic, Maus My Father Bleed History, breaks up Vladek s story about surviving the
Holocaust, which is what happens in the scene with Vladek and Lucia s fight. Spiegelman uses the
interruptions of Vladek s story to lead out of it and then back into Maus to assist in clarifying
information for the reader, to show the father son relationship between Artie and Vladek, and also to
explain how Maus was written.
The incidents that Spiegelman uses within his panels and text work as a way to give insight into how
Artie and Vladek s father son relationship works. A case in which Artie and Vladek s relationship is
shown is right after Vladek tells Artie the story about Lucia and he says, But this is what I just told
you about Lucia and so I don t want you should write this in your book (Spiegelman 23). To help
interrupt Vladek s story Spiegelman makes the panel in which this dialogue takes place have no
border around it, which gives the panel a sense of breaking up the story that Vladek was telling to

Analysis In the poem Barter by Sara Teasdale uses the symbol of bartering to represent the loveliness
of life. For most of the poem, the poet shows the things in life that people should be able to enjoy

When I first began working in the music industry I knew that it was a cutthroat business. From the

contrasts in the type of information that was gained while reviewing two studies. The studies reviewed

As an entomology class, consisting of 6 students and a professor, we walked around a rural campus
for approximately 45 minutes in Laurinburg, North Carolina; collecting termites (unsure of exact
scientific name) from underneath decomposing logs from multiple sites within an acre area. With
these samples, and the efforts of Jared Kay (student), who continued the search after class, we had a
combined total of 30 termites including worker and soldier castes to study.
After samples were collected and consolidated to a tuple ware container, we set up the experiment in
the science lab, located at St. Andrews University, Laurinburg. The experiment consisted of a white
sheet of paper, and three writing utensils : rollerball, ball point, and a sharpie. In essence, we release
one termite at a time onto the white paper and draw lines with each of the pens listed above; to
