You may not need big data after all
While big data is hyped, most companies don't effectively use the data they already have. To benefit from data, a company must first develop a culture of evidence-based decision making. This involves establishing a single source of performance data, providing real-time feedback, explicitly managing business rules based on facts, and coaching employees on data-driven decisions. Only then will a company be positioned to leverage large datasets like big data.
Problem Solving
Here are the key steps of the scientific method:
1. Observation and description of a phenomenon or group of phenomena. This includes how it was measured or counted, under what conditions, and other relevant qualitative and quantitative details.
2. Development of a hypothesis to explain the phenomena. A hypothesis is not yet a theory - it is an educated guess or supposition.
3. Use of the hypothesis to predict the existence of other phenomena, or to predict quantitatively the results of new observations and experiments.
4. Performance of experimental tests of the predictions by several independent experimenters and researchers.
5. Iterative refinement of the hypothesis based on the experimental evidence, or development of alternative hypotheses.

3. Survey feedback is a powerful technique that involves collecting data through a questionnaire, analyzing and feeding it back, and using it to diagnose and improve the organization.

Many organizations think that they are data-driven but the reality is that few genuinely are and that we could all do better. In this talk, I cover what it truly means to be data driven. The answer, it turns out, is not to do with the latest tools and technologies (although they can help) but having an appropriate data culture than spans the whole organization, where data is accessible broadly, embedded into operations and processes, and enables effective decision making. In this presentation, I dissect what an effective data-driven culture entails, covering facets such as data leadership, data literacy, and A/B testing, illustrating concepts with examples from different industries as well as personal experience.

I develop the Ruby programming language, RubyGems, and Bundler, which are package managers for Ruby. Today, I will introduce how to enhance the security of your application using open-source software (OSS) examples from Ruby and RubyGems.
The first topic is CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures). I have published CVEs many times. But what exactly is a CVE? I'll provide a basic understanding of CVEs and explain how to detect and handle vulnerabilities in OSS.
Next, let's discuss package managers. Package managers play a critical role in the OSS ecosystem. I'll explain how to manage library dependencies in your application.
I'll share insights into how the Ruby and RubyGems core team works to keep our ecosystem safe. By the end of this talk, you'll have a better understanding of how to safeguard your code.

It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.

- Chapter 10 looks at the ways consultants work with the client during the diagnosis phase. Process consultation is about providing a helping relationship, but there may be difference between what the client wants and what is most helpful. Long term solutions require rethinking, rearranging, and relearning how things are currently done. This takes time and energy, and often involves delving deeper into interpersonal processes than we want to go. Resolution of the problem also requires action from the client Why does Block prefer Discovery to Diagnosis? Diagnosis is a rational term that undervalues the amount of emotional effort necessary to make improvements.
- Discovery, engagement, and dialogue better describe the process involved in helping the client find a longer lasting answer to their problem. How do we help the client be open to the discovery process? Recognize resistance and how to deal with it Work on building client commitment Understand the politics and personalities surrounding the data collection Address the organizational element of each problem rationally Don’t be afraid to ask questions about how the problem is being managed This is a scary thought because it means gathering data from your client about your client! Engagement Dialogue sustained collective inquiry into processes, assumptions and certainties that compose everyday experiences (Isaacs, 1993)
