There are milestones that 
children who are making 
adequate developmentally 
progress reach as they grow. For 
children with exceptionalities 
some of these milestones are 
affected by their disabilities in 
varying degrees. The first half of 
this presentation outlines the 
normal milestones achieved for 
non-disabled children. The 
second half of the presentation 
outlines how different milestones 
are affect by different disabilities. 
The second half of the 
presentation also provide 
evidence based teaching strategies 
that help overcome some of the 
challenges posed by the 
disabilities outlines. 
Exceptionalities 
And Their Impact on Developmental 
Milestones
In the United States, 17% of children 
have a developmental or behavioral 
disability, and many more have 
delays in language or other areas 
(Department of Early Education and Care, 
2008). 
Children with intellectual disabilities go through the 
same stages of development in the same order of 
non intellectually disabled students. 
Sometimes the specific learning disability is 
apparent sometimes it can be a mixture of 
disabilities. 
Learning to walk can be impaired by a physical 
disability 
Indicators of EBD can be seen in infancy if the child 
is not gaining weight or losing weight with no 
physical explanation 
ADD and ADHD are the most prevalent disabilities 
recognized under Other Health Impairments 
Toddlers 12 months with Autism Spectrum Disorder 
and older do not show interests in social interaction. 
Developmental milestones are 
behaviors or skills that illustrate a 
child’s growth in a number of 
areas (Department of Early 
Education and Care, 2008). 
Educators must remain aware of 
what is and is not working for 
students in their classroom so that 
they can modify their instruction 
when necessary to fit the needs of 
the learner.

  • 1. PLACE STAMP HERE Presentation By Ahmad-Rauf Hardy for Grand Canyon University There are milestones that children who are making adequate developmentally progress reach as they grow. For children with exceptionalities some of these milestones are affected by their disabilities in varying degrees. The first half of this presentation outlines the normal milestones achieved for non-disabled children. The second half of the presentation outlines how different milestones are affect by different disabilities. The second half of the presentation also provide evidence based teaching strategies that help overcome some of the challenges posed by the disabilities outlines.   • 2. In the United States, 17% of children have a developmental or behavioral disability, and many more have delays in language or other areas (Department of Early Education and Care, 2008). Children with intellectual disabilities go through the same stages of development in the same order of non intellectually disabled students. Sometimes the specific learning disability is apparent sometimes it can be a mixture of disabilities. Learning to walk can be impaired by a physical disability Indicators of EBD can be seen in infancy if the child is not gaining weight or losing weight with no physical explanation ADD and ADHD are the most prevalent disabilities recognized under Other Health Impairments Toddlers 12 months with Autism Spectrum Disorder and older do not show interests in social interaction. Developmental milestones are behaviors or skills that illustrate a child’s growth in a number of areas (Department of Early Education and Care, 2008). Educators must remain aware of what is and is not working for students in their classroom so that they can modify their instruction when necessary to fit the needs of the learner.
