The conventional line-commutated ac-to-dc converters/ inverters have square-shaped line current. It contains higher-order harmonics which generates EMI and it causes more heating of the core of distribution or power transformers. PWM based inverters using MOSFET/IGBT have higher switching losses, and the power handling capability and reliability are quite low in comparison to thyristors/ SCR. A thyristor based forced commutated inverters are not suitable for PWM applications due to the problems of commutation circuits. A pure sinusoidal voltage output or waveform with low harmonic contents is most desirable for ac load using dc to ac conversion. This paper presents a new multilevel inverter topology in which three phase ac- to-dc converter circuits are used in inversion mode by controlling the switching angle. Due to natural commutation, no separate circuit is required for synchronization. In this paper simulation and analysis are done for grid-tied three-phase 6-pulse, Two three-phase, 3-pulse and 12-pulse converter. These converters are analysed for different battery voltage and different switching angle combinations in order to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD). Three-phase harmonic filters are further added to the grid side to reduce the harmonic content in the line current. A comparative study of these converters is also presented in this paper.

A Three Level Single Stage PFC Converter for Variable Power Applicationspaperpublications3
Abstract: AC/DC power converters are required to operate with high power factor (PF) and low total harmonic distortion (THD) for improved grid quality and full capacity utilization of the transmission lines. Passive PF correction (PFC) circuits consist of inductive and capacitive filters followed by a diode bridge. They provide the simplest way of achieving high PF with high efficiency; however, they require low line frequency filters which are bulky and heavy. This work presents a new single stage three level isolated AC/DC PFC converter for high DC link voltage low-power applications achieved through an effective integration of AC/DC and DC/DC stages where all of the switches are shared between two operations. With the converter and switching scheme, input current shaping and output voltage regulation can be achieved simultaneously without introducing additional switches or switching actions. Due to the flexible DC link voltage structure, high power factor can be achieved at high line voltage. The performance of the single stage PFC converter is simulated in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment.

Abstract: Energy from the sun and the wind can alleviate the pressure on traditional sources that has been considerably depleted. Many stages of renewable energy conversion require DC-DC converters with high voltage gain and high power. The applications where electrical isolation is not necessary, transformer less high gain converters can be used in order to avoid the difficulty of using large capacity transformers. This is a step up resonant converter which can achieve high voltage-gain using LC parallel resonant tank. Zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) of semiconductor devices in a resonant converter can be achieved by resonant devices. It is characterized by ZVS turn-on and nearly ZVS turn-off of main switches. Moreover, the equivalent voltage stress of the semiconductor devices is lower than other resonant step up converters. A resonant converter is simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK and experimental results are also verified.

To overcome the problem of mismatched voltage levels between parallel-connected low voltage photovoltaic (PV)

the traditional single phase diode clamping. Only one inductor, two capacitors in series, and those power switches and diodes,

principle of the topology is analyzed, and then the pulse width modulation (PWM) control method is obtained according to
the switching functions about the output pulse voltages of both half-bridges. Therefore, the converter can not only operate
with high voltage gain, but also make the duty cycles of power switches closer to 0.5. A feedforward closed loop control

Multilevel inverters have been widely accepted for high-power high-voltage applications. Their performance is highly superior to that of conventional Seven-level inverters due to reduced harmonic distortion, lower electromagnetic interference, and higher dc link voltages. In this paper, a new topology with a reversing-voltage component is proposed to improve the multilevel performance. This topology requires fewer components compared to existing inverters (particularly in higher levels) and requires fewer carrier signals and gate drives. Therefore, thecomplexity is greatly reduced particularly for higher output voltage levels. This paper presents an analysis of virtual-flux direct power control (VFDPC) technique for the three-phase pulse width modulation (PWM) ac-dc converter. The proposed VFDPC is developed by assuming the grid voltage and converter line filters quantities are related to a virtual three-phase ac motor. The controller works with less number of sensors by eliminating the voltage sensors used for measuring the three-phase grid voltage. The grid virtual flux which is proportional to the grid voltage will be estimated from the information of converter switching states, line current, and dc-link output voltage. Several analyses are performed in order to study the steady state and dynamic performance of the converter, particularly during the load and DC voltage output reference variations. The proportional integral (PI) controller at the outer voltage control loop of VFDPC is tuned properly and the entire PWM ac-dc converter system is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink to ensure the dc output voltage follow the desired output voltage under steady state and dynamic conditions. Ac-dc converter utilizing the proposed VFDPC is able to generate three-phase input current waveforms that are almost sinusoidal with low harmonics contents which is less than 5% and near unity power factor (pf) operation.

In this paper, a Wavelet modulated isolated two-stage three-phase bidirectional AC-DC converter is proposed for electric vehicle (EV) charging systems. Half-bridge resonant CLLC converter is proposed due to its high efficiency, wide gain range, galvanic isolation and bidirectional power flow. Wavelet modulation technique is used for three-phase six leg AC-DC converter due to its benefits of high DC component and lower harmonic contents. The proposed two-stage converter is developed and simulated in MATLAB Simulink environment. The contribution of this paper is on the implementation and performance analysis of Wavelet modulation in bidirectional AC-DC converters. The results show that Wavelet modulation is suitable to be implemented for the proposed bidirectional converter. The performance of the proposed converter delivers very low output voltage ripple and total harmonic distortion output current of less than 10% which is within the expected results.

High gain dc-dc step up converters have been used in renewable energy systems, for example, photovoltaic grid connected system and fuel cell power plant to step up the low level dc voltage to a high level dc bus voltage. If the conventional boost converter is to meet this demand, it should be operated at an extreme duty cycle (duty cycle closes to unity), which will cause electromagnetic interference, reverse recovery problem and conduction loss at the power switches. This paper proposes a class of non-isolated dc-dc step up converters which provide very high voltage gain at a small duty cycle (duty cycle < 0.5). Firstly, the converter topologies are derived based on active switched inductor network and combination of active and passive switched inductor networks; secondly, the modes of operation of proposed active switched inductor converter and combined active and passive switched inductor converter are illustrated; thirdly, the performance of the proposed converters are analyzed mathematically in details and compared with conventional boost converter. Finally, the analysis is verified by simulation results.

Analysis and hardware implementation of five level cascaded H Bridge inverterIJERA Editor
The cascaded multilevel inverter (CMLI) has gained much attention in recent years due to its advantages in high
voltage and high power with low harmonics applications. A standard cascaded multilevel inverter requires n DC
sources for 2n+1levels at the output, where n is the number of inverter stages. This paper presents a topology to
control cascaded multilevel inverter that is implemented with multiple DC sources to get 2"+1_ 1 levels. Without
using Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique, the firing circuit can be implemented using Microcontroller
which greatly reduces the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and switching losses. To develop the model of a
cascaded hybrid multilevel inverter, a simulation is done based on MATLAB/SIMULINK software and
hardware implementation was also done. Their integration makes the design and analysis of a hybrid multilevel
inverter more complete and detailed.
Simulation of 3-phase matrix converter using space vector modulationIJECEIAES

This paper presents an analytical comparison between two-level inverter and three-level neutral point diode clamped inverters for electric vehicle traction purposes. The main objective of the research is to declare the main differences in the performance of the two inverter schemes in terms of the switching and conduction losses over an entire domain of the modulation index and the phase angle distribution, steady-state operation, transient operation at a wide range of speed variation, and the total harmonic distortion THD% of the line voltage output waveform. It also declares the analysis of the three-level neutral point diode clamped inverter (NPCI) obstacle and the unbalance of the DC-link capacitor voltages. The introduced scheme presents an Induction Motor (IM) drive for electric vehicle (EV) applications. Considering the dynamic operation of the EV, the speed of the three-phase induction motor is controlled using a scalar V/Hz control for the full range of the IM power factor (PF). Analysis of symmetrical & asymmetrical pwm based three phase ac to ac con...eSAT Journals
Abstract
A Three phase bidirectional AC to AC buck converter circuit using power MOSFET operating in high frequency chopping mode is simulated and analyzed for electrical parameters such as output phase voltage, input line current, input power factor, harmonic profile and efficiency using MATLAB/simulink software package. The various PWM techniques such as symmetrical ramp-DC PWM (SRDPWM), asymmetrical ramp-triangular PWM (ARTPWM), asymmetrical sinusoidal PWM type-1 [ASPWM1] and asymmetrical sinusoidal PWM type-2 [ASPWM2] techniques are adopted to analyze the harmonic profile, input power factor and efficiency of the converter. The rms value of the output phase voltage, output line current and source current can be significantly increased by varying the duty ratio K in case of symmetrical PWM control strategy and modulation index MI in case of asymmetrical PWM control strategies independent of variation in switching frequency. It is observed from the simulation results that the ASPWM1 switching strategy gives more output phase voltage, input power factor, efficiency by increasing modulation index MI and reduced low order harmonics of output voltage and source current by increasing the number of pulses per half cycle P compared to other PWM techniques rendering easy and economical filteration.

Modeling and State Feedback Controller Design of Tubular Linear Permanent Mag...IAES-IJPEDS
In this paper a state feedback controller for tubular linear permanent magnet
synchronous motor (TLPMSM) containing two gas springs, is presented.
The proposed TLPMSM controller is used to control reciprocating motions
of TLPMSM. The analytical plant model of TLPMSM is a multi-input
multi-output (MIMO) system which is decoupled to some sub single-input
single-output (SISO) systems, then, the sub SISO systems are converted to
sub-state space models. Indeed, the TLPMSM state space model is decoupled
to some sub-state spaces, and then, the gains of state feedback are calculated
by linear quadratic regulation (LQR) method for each sub-state space
separately. The controller decreases the distortions of the waveforms.
The simulation results indicate the validity of the controller.

harmonic and ripple current analysis with its comparison statistics and thus
providing a justification for the suitable ones. The performance of the
12, 24, 36 and 48-pulse converters are compared for their effectiveness in
both quantitatively as well as qualitatively. Further, comparison of the
48-pulse converter on its THD and current ripple which is connected towards
the grid with simple pulse width modulation technique is also proposed. It
combines all features of the low switching concepts and DC current reinjection

Modified Distribution Transformer for Enhancing Power Quality in Distribution...IAES-IJPEDS
The percentage of non-linear loads in the power distribution sector is increasing
day by day. Harmonics injected by these non-linear loads circulate in the delta
windings of the conventional distribution transformer thereby increasing the
temperature and losses. This reduces the efficiency and life of the transformers.
In a modified distribution transformer configuration proposed recently, called
star-star-delta_utilized configuration (YYD_utilized), the harmonics circulating
in the delta winding was utilized and the drainage power thus recovered was
used to power auxiliary loads. This paper presents the experimental studies
conducted on YYD_utilized distribution transformer. When compared to
conventional star-star, delta-star and star-star-delta transformers, the new
configuration of YYD_utilized transformer has shown considerable
improvement in transformer efficiency. The results obtained show that when
the power from the circulating harmonics is recovered and utilized, it not only
improves transformer efficiency but also improves the power factor
and reduces the harmonic distortions at the primary side of the transformer.
The results obtained also suggest the existence of maximum power point or an
optimum loading for the recovered harmonic power.
Modelling of Virtual Synchronous Converter for Grid-Inverter Synchronization ...IAES-IJPEDS
In this paper, virtual synchronous converter (VSCon) is been developed
which mimic the behavior of synchronous generator as in order to have fast
synchronization between the inverter with the grid. This synchronization is
important before can sent the power among inverter-grid connection. This
technique can also been applied at the distributed generated sources when are
connected to the local microgrids. Here, the frequency and voltage
synchronization also can be controlled at the same time some improvement
on synchronous generator mathematical model that is suitable to be
implemented into the inverter control. The whole unit of VSCon is operated
and simulated in Matlab/Simulink in order to observe all consequences
during synchronizing the voltage, frequency and phase-angle. It has been
verified by the simulation circuit where, the power converter can be
synchronized with the microrids without using a PLL unit for self
synchronization. This VSCon technique has proven that, by applying the
concept of the synchronous generator model in inverter control, it can cause
the inverter to behave as generator system, which does not required any
phase information from the grid in order to be synchronized.
Enhanced Crowbar Protection for Fault Ride through Capability of Wind Generat...IAES-IJPEDS
Due to increasing demand in power, the integration of renewable sources like
wind generation into power system is gaining much importance nowadays.
The heavy penetration of wind power into the power system leads to many
integration issues mainly due to the intermittent nature of the wind and the
desirability for variable speed operation of the generators. As the wind power
generation depends on the wind speed, its integration into the grid has
noticeable influence on the system stability and becomes an important issue
especially when a fault occurs on the grid. The protective disconnection of a
large amount of wind power during a fault will be an unacceptable
consequence and threatens the power system stability. With the increasing
use of wind turbines employing Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG)
technology, it becomes a necessity to investigate their behavior during grid
faults and support them with fault ride through capability. This paper
presents the modeling and simulation of a doubly fed induction generator
according to grid code compatibility driven by a wind turbine connected to
the grid. This paper analyses the voltage sag due to a three-phase fault in the
wind connected grid. A control strategy including a crowbar circuit has been
developed in MATLAB/SIMULINK to bypass the rotor over currents during
grid fault to enhance the fault ride through capability and to maintain system
stability. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control
strategies in DFIG based grid connected wind turbine system.
An Improved of Multiple Harmonic Sources Identification in Distribution Syste...IAES-IJPEDS
This paper introduces an improved of multiple harmonic sources
identification that been produced by inverter loads in power system using
time-frequency distribution (TFD) analysis which is spectrogram.
The spectrogram is a very applicable method to represent signals in
time-frequency representation (TFR) and the main advantages
of spectrogram are the accuracy, speed of the algorithm and use low memory
size such that it can be computed rapidly. The identification of multiple
harmonic sources is based on the significant relationship of spectral
impedances which are the fundamental impedance (Z1) and harmonic
impedance (Zh) that extracted from TFR. To verify the accuracy of the
proposed method, MATLAB simulations carried out several unique cases
with different harmonic producing loads on IEEE 4-bus test feeder cases. It is
proven that the proposed method is superior with 100% correct identification
of multiple harmonic sources. It is envisioned that the method is very
accurate, fast and cost efficient to localize harmonic sources in distribution
system.

The paper presents performance and energy saving analysis of 1.25 kWp grid
connected photovoltaic system under difference weather condition in West
Sumatera. The measured data were performed during weather data that often
occur in West Sumatra i.e. sunny, overcast, raining and cloudy.
The synchronizing process successfully done even bad weather conditions
when sunlight was low automatically. Photovoltaic in average start
producing power from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM for normal or clear sky, however
under overcast, raining and cloudy weather, the PV power decreased and
disconnected earlier before sunset. During intermittent raining, overcast and
cloud covered the PV power output show an irregular profile. The PV energy
saving performed for three residential connection cases: 1300 VA, 900 VA
with subsidized and 900 VA without subsidized. The solar PV installation
have more benefits and energy saving for 1300 VA, 900 VA without
subsidized with payback period around 8.5 years. However, the 900 VA with
subsidized take longer 20.8 years, but still in PV lifespan 25 years. In the
future, household subsidies may be reduced or eliminated, the solar energy
will be viable alternative of energy resources when it can produce electricity
at a cost equivalent to utility grid PLN rate.
An Improved Constant Voltage Based MPPT Technique for PMDC MotorIAES-IJPEDS
Stand-alone photovoltaic (SAPV) systems are being used in remote areas
and are being seen as one of the promising solution in this regard. The SAPV
system as presented in the paper consists of solar PV panel, a DC-DC
converter, a controller and a PMDC motor. The current-voltage and powervoltage
characteristics being nonlinear, the SAPV system require maximum
power point techniques (MPPT) control techniques to extract maximum
power available from the PV cell. A voltage based MPPT technique which is
capable of tracking MPP has been selected because of numerous advantages
it offers such as: simple and low cost of implementation. The limitation of
constant voltage method is that its efficiency is low as the PV panel has to be
disconnected from the load for measurement of the open circuit voltage
(Voc). In the presented paper, the authors have removed this limitation by
using a pilot PV panel for measurement of Voc. A proportional-integrator (PI)
based controller is used in implementation of constant voltage MPP
technique and the modeling is done in MATLAB®/SIMULINK simulation
environment. The simulation results are presented and discussed in the paper,
the results shows that the efficiency of the system has increased.
A Discrete PLL Based Load Frequency Control of FLC-Based PV-Wind Hybrid Power...IAES-IJPEDS
The sun and wind-based generation are considered to besource of green
power generation which can mitigate the power demand issues. As solar and
wind power advancements are entrenched and the infiltration of these
Renewable Energy Sources (RES) into to network is expanding dynamically.
So, as to outline a legitimate control and to harness power from RES the
learning of natural conditions for a specific area is fundamental. Fuzzy Logic
Controller (FLC) based Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controlled
boost converter are utilized for viable operation and to keep DC voltage
steady at desired level. The control scheme of the inverter is intended to keep
the load voltage and frequency of the AC supply at aconstant level regardless
of progress in natural conditions and burden. A Simulink model of the
proposed Hybrid system with the MPPT controlled Boost converters
and Voltage regulated Inverter for stand-alone application is developed in
MATLAB R2015a, Version 8.5.0. The ongoing information of Wind Speed
and Solar Irradiation levels are recorded at BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad Campus
the performance of the voltage regulated inverter under constant and varying
linearAC load is analyzed. The investigation shows that the magnitude of
load voltage and frequency of the load voltage is maintained at desired level
by the proposed inverter control logic.
An Adaptive Virtual Impedance Based Droop Control Scheme for Parallel Inverte...IAES-IJPEDS
This paper presents an adaptive virtual impedance based droop control
scheme for parallel inverter operation in low voltage microgrid. Because it is
essential to achieve power sharing between inverters in microgrid, various
droop control schemes have been proposed. In practice, the line impedance
between inverters and the point of common coupling (PCC) in microgrid are
not always equal. This imbalance in line impedance often results in a reactive
power mismatch among inverters. This problem has been solved by
introducing a virtual impedance loop in the conventional droop control
scheme. However, the reactive power sharing performance of this method is
still deteriorated when the line impedances change during operation. To
overcome such a problem, a new control scheme that is based on a virtual
impedance loop and an impedance estimation scheme is proposed.
To monitor the changes in line impedances, the impedance estimator is
implemented by using the output voltages and currents of inverters as well as
the voltages at the PCC. To compensate for the reactive power mismatch due
to the line impedance changes, the estimated line impedance is fed to the
virtual impedance loop in which it adjusts the virtual impedance value.
Comparative simulation results with the conventional ones verify the
effectiveness of the proposed adaptive virtual impedance based droop control
scheme.
Open-Switch Fault-Tolerant Control of Power Converters in a Grid-Connected Ph...IAES-IJPEDS
This paper presents the study of an open switch fault tolerant control of a
grid-connected photovoltaic system. The studied system is based on the
classical DC-DC boost converter and a bidirectional 6-pulse DC-AC
converter. The objective is to provide an open-switch fault detection method
and fault-tolerant control for both of boost converter and grid-side converter
(GSC) in a grid-connected photovoltaic system. A fast fault detection method
and a reliable fault-tolerant topology are required to ensure continuity of
service, and achieve a faster corrective maintenance. In this work, the mean
value of the error voltages is used as fault indicator for the GSC, while, for
the boost converter the inductor current form is used as fault indicator. The
fault-tolerant topology was achieved by adding one redundant switch to the
boost converter, and by adding one redundant leg to the GSC. The results of
the fault tolerant control are presented and discussed to validate the proposed
approach under different scenarios and different solar irradiances.

charging time required for the batteries used in EV. As a consequence, this
subject matter has been researched in many credentials where a wide range
of solutions have been proposed. However those solutions are in nature due
to the complex hardware structure. To provide an unswerving journey
an Android application based charging optimization is proposed.
This application is aimed at giving relevant information about the EV’s
battery state of charge (SOC), accurate location of the EV, booking of the
charging slots using token system and route planner. At emergency
situations, an alternative service is provided by mobile charging stations.

Single-Phase Multilevel Inverter with Simpler Basic Unit Cells for Photovolta...IAES-IJPEDS
This paper presents a single-phase multilevel inverter (MLI) with simpler
basic unit cells. The proposed MLI is able to operate in two modes, i.e.
charge mode to charge the batteries, and inverter mode to supply AC power
to load, and therefore, it is inherently suitable for photovoltaic (PV) power
generation applications. The proposed MLI requires lower number of power
MOSFETs and gate driver units, which will translate into higher cost saving
and better system reliability. The power MOSFETs in the basic unit cells
and H-bridge module are switched at near fundamental frequency, i.e. 100
Hz and 50 Hz, respectively, resulting in lower switching losses. For low total
harmonic distortion (THD) operation, a deep scanning method is employed
to calculate the switching angles of the MLI. The lowest THD obtained is
8.91% at modulation index of 0.82. The performance of the proposed MLI
(9-level) has been simulated and evaluated experimentally. The simulation
and experimental results are in good agreement and this confirms that the
proposed MLI is able to produce an AC output voltage with low THD.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!

angle α. In this paper, MATLAB/Simulink model is analysed for three-phase 6-pulse, Two three-phase, 3-
pulse and 12-pulse converter circuit and THD is found at different conditions of converter circuits.
Circuit diagram of three phase 6-pulse converter is shown in figure 1. Each phase conducts and line
current for 120°. When switching angle becomes higher than 90°, the converter works in inverter operation.
Circuit diagram of two Three-Phase, half-wave, 3-Pulse ac-to-dc converter is shown in figure 2. Here two
half-wave converters are connected in anti parallel mode through a same source with independent load. Both
group of thyristers are triggered at more than 90° for inversion operation.
Figure 3 shows the circuit diagram of three-phase 12-pulse converter, where converter1 and
converter 2 are basically 6-pulse converter connected with delta and star secondary windings, respectively.
The conduction period of the line current for each converter is 120°. The number of turns in each phase
winding of delta connection is times of star connection as the line voltage of both secondaries are same.
Therefore, the reflected current in the primary winding due to delta connected winding is I0. The resultant
current in the primary winding is sum of I0 due to converter 2 and I0 due to converter1 [8]. Therefore, the
reflected current in the primary side is in stepped form [8].

2. PROPOSED SCHEME
A multilevel converter circuit with RLE load works in two modes of operation i.e. rectification
mode and inverter mode. It works in inversion mode when the switching angle of each of the converter is
greater than 90º [8]. Here, a multilevel circuit topology has been proposed for dc-to-ac conversion where
batteries are charged from solar PV cells. The circuit has been analyzed for three level as well as six level of
line current. It can be extended to higher levels for better performance [9]. However, the increase of level
adds to the cost of converter. So, a suitable compromise has to be made between the THD of the line current
and cost of additional hardware. For three level, two three-phase half-wave 3-pulse ac-to-dc converter and
three-phase 6-pulse converter topologies are used and for six level, 12-pulse converter topology is used. The
major advantage of the proposed configuration is that in continuous current mode of operation of each
converter, the waveform of line current resembles a stepped sinusoidal wave and with suitable selection of
switching angles the harmonic contents can be reduced drastically.

3. CONTROL STRATEGY
In general, the load current can be either continuous or discontinuous. In case of continuous current
operation, the current of conducting thyristors does not reduce to zero level. The condition depends upon dc
source voltage, phase angle of load or inductor and the switching angle.
(a) Three level control strategy: For three level line current, three-phase 6-pulse converter and two three-
phase, half-wave, 3-Pulse ac-to-dc converter are used. Two three-phase, half-wave, 3-pulse ac-to-dc
converter is shown in Figure 2 in which two 3-pulse half-wave converter are connected in anti parallel
through a same source with independent load. Both group of thyristors are triggered at more than 90° for
inversion operation.
(b) Six level control strategy: For this strategy three-phase 12-pulse converter is used, where converter1 and
converter2 are connected with delta-star connected secondary windings, respectively. The conduction period
of the line current for each converter is 120°. Conduction period of each converter is 30° phase shifted. The
number of turns in each phase winding of delta connection is times of star connection [8].
The line current for each converter is approximately square wave of (Idc) with 120° conduction
period. The line current for the star connected secondary winding (i1) is the same as its phase current (is1).
The phase current of delta connected secondary winding (is2) is obtained by considering the transformer
secondary as a current divider rule [10].
Thus, is2 = 2/3 Idc lines A2 & B2 are both conducting
= 1/3 Idc only one of lines A2 or B2 conducting
The primary current as the primary is connected in star will be the sum of the secondary winding currents
multiplied by the proper turns ratio and is obtained as,
iA = (is1+√3is2). n (1)
where n is the turns ratio
The winding current (is1) of star connected secondary can be expressed Fourier series as
Is1(wt) = ∑ ( ) ( ) , (n is odd)
Similarly, delta connected secondary winding current is2 can be expressed in Fourier series as,
Is2(wt) = ∑ ( ) ( ) ( ) ,
Hence the combined current drawn by the primary winding (using 1) is obtained as,
iA = Idc [sinθ –
θ
+
θ
where θ = wt -
4. ANALYSIS AND SIMULATION RESULTS
Simulation of the models is done using MATLAB/ Simulink. The triggering pulses are given from
the pulse generator block of the simulink blockset. Figure 4 shows the simulink model of three-phase, 6-pulse
converter. The value of inductor is 100 mH, resistance is 5 Ω, dc voltage is 24V. In this paper, THD and
power transfer analysis is done for various combinations of switching angles (α) [11, 12]. Figure 4(a) shows
the line current with THD and harmonics for three-phase 6-pulse inverter for switching angle (α) = 115º
.
Figure 4(b) and 4(c) shows the variation of power and THD with different switching angles for three-phase,
6-pulse inverter respectively. It is evident from Figure 4(b) and 4(c) that for increasing switching angle the
power transfer to grid initially increases thereafter its decreases and the THD is almost constant upto 120º
then its increases rapidly. Therefore a suitable compromise is made for selecting switching angle. Figure 4(d)
and 4(e) shows the variation of power and THD with battery voltage at different switching angles for three-
phase 6-pulse inverter. As the battery voltage increases power transfer to grid increases and the THD
decreases. However, at α=105º
results are satisfactory.
Figure 5 shows the simulink model of Two three-phase, half-wave, 3-pulse Converter. The value of
inductor is 100 mH, resistance is 250Ω and battery voltage is 12V. Figure 5(a) shows the line current with
THD and harmonics at switching angle α=95º
. Figure 5(b) shows the variation of power with switching angle
combinations (α=95º
, α=105º
and α=115º
) with battery voltage of 12V and 24V. Figure 5(c) shows the
variation of THD with switching angle combinations (α=95º
, α=105º
and α=115º
). It is evident from figure
5(b) and 5(c) that for increasing switching angle the power transfer to grid decreases and the THD increases
rapidly and, so a suitable compromise is made for selecting switching angle.

To reduce the harmonics of the line current, passive filters can be used. When a three phase filter is
added on the grid side, THD reduces drastically. These filters are shunt elements that are used in power
systems for decreasing voltage and current distortion and for power factor correction. Harmonic filters reduce
distortion by diverting harmonic currents in low impedance paths. The filters are built up from passive RLC
components. Their values can be computed using nominal reactive power, tuning frequencies and quality
factor. Here a combination of four types of filters are used in parallel, The filter set is made of the following
four components providing a total of 4 Kvar, 1 Kvar C-type high-pass filter tuned to the 3rd harmonic (F1), 1

5. CONCLUSION
In this paper, simulation analysis of three-phase 6-pulse, Two three-phase, half-wave, 3-pulse and
12-pulse converter is successfully done. THD and power transfer analysis is done for various combinations of
switching angles α, battery voltage and load resistance. It is evident from the results that on increasing the
switching angle THD gradually increases for 6-pulse and 12-pulse converter whereas for two 3-pulse
converter THD decreases. However, on increasing the battery voltage, power transfer to grid increases and
the THD decreases. From the results shown in this paper, it is concluded that for three phase 6-pulse
converter, THD of line current comes out to be 31.54 % in comparison with 15.39 % for three-phase, 12-
pulse converter at switching angle α=95º
whereas THD of line current for two three-phase, half-wave, 3-pulse
is 22.21 %. Therefore, two 3-pulse converter have good result than 6-pulse converter. THD of line current
decreases drastically for twelve pulse converter in comparison with 6-pulse and two 3- pulse converter. On
adding harmonic filters on the grid side, THD of 12-pulse converters reduces drastically to 2.16 %. Thus this
circuit topology can be used for solar PV based grid-tie inverters.
