This document summarizes a student research project that analyzed microplastic pollution on two beaches in North Devon, England. The student took sediment samples along transects at each beach and analyzed them to identify microplastic fibers and their polymer type using FT-IR spectroscopy. The results showed microplastic fibers were present at both beaches, consisting of polyester, polyamide, acrylic and cellulosic fibers. There was no correlation found between fiber abundance and particle size or elevation along the beach profiles. This demonstrates microplastic contamination at the North Devon beaches from potential sources like wastewater treatment plants.
