So, how do you do it?
Design research is critical. Creating foundational, living documentation about the needs, beliefs and behaviors of your customer is of the utmost importance. And, being able to identify needs, opportunities and the future direction for the business, based on both sound process and analytical thought, will be your keys to short and long-term success.
In this session you'll learn how to turn design research activities into a mental model, identify potential new business opportunities and derive business and experience direction from your newly found consumer insight. And, you'll look like a freakin' rockstar in your company doing it.

In 48 hours, 3000 people in 120 cities worked in random groups to develop service concepts inspired by a shared theme, using design thinking techniques. Each group had 48 hours to conduct user research, ideate concepts, and refine ideas into deliverables. Though there were challenges with fatigue, friendly competition and cooperation led to over 500 projects being created across the cities to explore innovative solutions.
No time, no money, no mandate: User research in the public sector #SXC15
Simone Carrier discusses ways to conduct user research for public services even with limited time and budget constraints. Some suggestions include skipping recruiters and documentation, creating low-fidelity prototypes, and starting research by leaving one's desk to observe users. Design thinking and human-centered design focus on putting people and communities at the center of the design process to tackle complex challenges. Design thinking looks at complex issues from the perspective of users and is a way of thinking, while human-centered design provides processes and techniques to apply design thinking. It involves exploratory research to build understanding, brings together diverse perspectives, and prototypes and iterates to refine solutions. Design thinking can be applied at the system, program, and product levels.
Why Most UX is Shite
The document discusses signs of great user experience (UX) according to a website, including an elegant user interface, being addictive, having a fast start, being seamless, and changing the user. It then criticizes most UX for not making decisions for users, thinking the designer's opinion counts more than users, not measuring UX metrics or defining what makes a good experience, and not truly caring about customers by shaping the organization's culture around them. It concludes that the user interface is a symptom of organizational culture and good UX requires getting beneath the surface to create good organizations first in order to craft good UX.

Participatory design is an approach that involves stakeholders in the design process to better understand their needs. It fits within the discover phase of the design process, using activities like collages and creating "magic objects" to generate ideas. These methods provide insights that help uncover latent needs. Effective facilitation is key, by planning engaging activities and carefully documenting the outputs to analyze for themes and opportunity areas. The goal is to co-design with users to develop solutions that better meet their needs.
