The document describes a project at the University of Canberra to design new learning spaces for staff and students. The objectives of the project were to create spaces that encourage active and collaborative learning, support both formal and informal use, and provide facilities for students and staff as learners. A staff commons, student commons, and teaching and learning center were developed following principles of flexibility, usability, and sustainability. Evaluation of the spaces included usage data collection and surveys to assess their impact on teaching and learning.
According to JISC, learning spaces "should be able to motivate learners and promote learning as an activity, support collaborative as well as formal practice, provide a personalised and inclusive environment, and be flexible in the face of changing needs..." - so what do we really know about them?

There are hundreds of free, pre-designed interactive learning objects available for educators, but research has shown that these resources are not being used for a variety of reasons. In this webinar, we will discuss the importance of interactivity in regards to student learning and learner satisfaction, the potential impact of free, pre-designed interactive learning objects, and methods for locating, selecting, implementing, and evaluating the objects.

Adapting OER: Addressing the Challenges of Reuse When Designing for HE Capaci...Fereshte Goshtasbpour
Changes in learning and teaching due to COVID-19 have prompted higher education (HE) institutions to develop strategies and skills related to technology-supported education, creating development opportunities that help staff teach and support students in online or blended situations. Using open educational resources (OER) meant training could be developed and localised quickly. However, there has been little research into the use of OER to meet urgent, unanticipated teaching needs. This paper provides a critical reflective account of learning design for the use of OER in a national capacity development initiative in Kenya as part of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) funded Skills for Prosperity Kenya project. Development of this OER was led by The Open University in partnership with 37 Kenyan universities. The initiative was designed to develop the knowledge and skills of educators, educational leaders, and support staff. The contribution of this paper is that it identifies challenges encountered when adapting OER for use in a technologically low-resourced context, showing how these can be addressed successfully at different learning design stages. Challenges were identified using the 7Cs of Learning Design (Conole, 2014): conceptualise, create, communicate, collaborate, consider, combine and consolidate. The paper concludes with recommendations for design practice and creating and remixing OER.
This presentation helps explain why 1:1 technology in classroom can help transform teaching. Included are reasons why to use 1:1, technology concepts to help teaching in 1:1 classes easier, and tips on lesson planning in 1:1 classrooms.
Personalised Learning Strategies for Higher educationMike KEPPELL
This presentation will explore how the places of learning might look in next generation learning spaces where learners traverse physical and virtual spaces using personalised learning strategies. It will examine how learning spaces may represent ubiquitous spaces in which the learner undertakes some form of study or learning.

Assuring Best Practice in Learning and Teaching: Priorities for Institutions, Teachers and Learners in a Connected World
This presentation will focus on learning and teaching in a connected world within the Higher Education context. Knowledge is now co-created, disseminated via networks, and personalised. It has moved from being described as “explaining some part of the world” and “used in some type of action” to involving ecologies and networks (Siemens, 2006, p. vi). The presentation will focus on:
• How learning and teaching has changed in a connected world
o Active learning
o Learning spaces
o Central role of technology
• Innovative teaching in a connected world
o Blended learning
o Authentic assessment
o Professional development
• The knowledge, skills and attitudes teachers need to thrive in a connected world
o Digital fluency
o Seamless teaching
o Assuring best practice in technology-enhanced environments
o Technology affordances
o Scholarship
o Learning analytics
• The knowledge, skills and attitudes learners need to thrive in a connected world
o Learners will need a toolkit encompassing digital literacies, seamless learning, self-regulated learning, learning-oriented assessment, lifelong learning, and flexible learning pathways. This toolkit will enable the learner to tackle the complexities of the learning landscape that is becoming increasingly digital, connected, and ambiguous.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

41. feedback
• My initial impression is of a amazingly technically-supported range of flexible spaces for working
away from the office. Amidst the latest in learning technologies, I loved the write-on wall. No white
boards, but especially painted walls (those that have a sticker on) that give space to 'spread your mind'. "

• The Nursing & Midwifery staff were so impressed with the teaching commons that our new Head
of Disciplines has asked if we can use the space for all our Research and Scholarship workshops."
Faculty of Health
• Surrounded by whiteboard walls, any individual, regardless of where they were in the room, could be put
in the position of group leader. The students were encouraged to turn around and jot ideas down
whenever they felt so inclined – and they did. With no one at ‘the front’ designated as the
authority figure, there was much more spontaneous input than I have experienced in a
standard classroom.
