This presentation was given by Akhter Ahmed (International Food Policy Research Institute), as part of the Annual Scientific Conference hosted by the University of Canberra and co-sponsored by the University of Canberra, the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and CGIAR Collaborative Platform for Gender Research. The event took place on April 2-4, 2019 in Canberra, Australia.

Designing for empowerment impact - The Agriculture, Nutrition, and Gender Linkages (ANGeL) project in Bangladesh
1. Designing for
empowerment impact
The Agriculture, Nutrition, and Gender Linkages
(ANGeL) project in Bangladesh
Presented by: Akhter Ahmed, Country Representative, IFPRI-Bangladesh
Seeds of Change Conference | Canberra, Australia | April 3, 2019
2. Agriculture-Nutrition-Gender Nexus:
Evidence from IFPRI Research
Findings from IFPRI’s 2012 Bangladesh
Integrated Household Survey (BIHS):
Agricultural diversity promotes
household and child dietary
diversity, and hence, diet quality
Women’s empowerment (measured
by WEAI) improves household, child,
and maternal dietary diversity
Agricultural diversity increases if
primary woman is empowered
(measured by WEAI)

ANGeL aims to strengthen the
agriculture-nutrition-gender nexus
3. Research Design
ANGeL aimed to identify actions and
investments in agriculture to improve
nutrition and empower women.
RCT with 5 interventions delivered to both
men and women in farm HHs over 17
months:
T1: Nutrition BCC (DAE)
T2: Nutrition BCC (trained community
women, or ANGeL Pushti Kormi)
T3: Agriculture Production (DAE)
T4: Agriculture+Nutrition (DAE)
T5: Agriculture+Nutrition+Gender (DAE
and HKI)

relationships
and joint
decisionmaking
“As my son fell in love and got
married [without my consent], I
didn’t accept his wife. I sent them
out of house. They have two
children and I have never seen
their faces. For the last 13 years, I
didn’t talk with them. But, after
attending six ANGeL sessions, I
realized my mistake and feel how
wrong I was! Now we are talking to
each other and have a lovely
relationship between us.”
10. Conclusions
Women consistently learned more and applied more improved
agriculture and nutrition practices than men who attended the same
trainings.
Training men and women together creates a mutually supportive
environment of learning.
Integrated programming that includes gender sensitization is
effective in empowering women and men.
Helen Keller International’s Nurturing Connections curriculum was
effective in changing attitudes on gender for men and women
In January 2019, the Ministry of Agriculture committed to scale up
ANGeL nationally – rolling out the combination of 3 interventions
that were most effective: trainings to men and women in farm
households on agriculture, nutrition, and gender.

Editor's Notes
These are single difference estimates based on endline data. At endline, 18% of male control respondents scored 75% or higher on our test. Men in T1 and T2 scored around 9% percentage points higher, even though there was no formal agricultural training in those treatment arms. Men in T3, T4 and T5 scored 35-40 percentage points higher. All impacts are statistically significant
These are single difference estimates based on endline data. At endline, hardly any female control respondents (only 5%!) scored 75% or higher on our test. Women in T1 and T2 did not see any change in knowledge but remember that there was no formal agricultural training in those treatment arms. Women in T3, T4 and T5 scored 59-70 percentage points higher, a massive increase. Impacts on T3, T4 and T5 are statistically significant
The A-WEAI is made up of 6 indicators. We looked at these six indicators to see where the biggest improvements in empowerment where, using ANCOVA.
