BACKGROUND
A report by VAG
q There are currently about 20000 military veterans in Ghana.
q 8000 veterans in kumasi as the second largest veterans population in Kumasi .
q About 200 new veterans are added annually in VAG.
q The initially 50 units veterans’ accomodation is now occupied by 18 veterans due to
dilapidation(VAG Report. 2021)
q A veteran
A former member of the GAF,serving for more than 12years for office and 15yrs for order rank.(GAF,nd)
Most veterans challenges include;
q homelessness
q health related issues.(Permanent injuries) (Burdett et al. 2012)
q lack of expertise for re-employment (Madichie and Ayasi, 2021)
INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH 02
AIM
q This research aims is to investigate ways of promoting the welfare of
veterans through the provision of facilities ( accessible housing, resource,
training and services centers) in Kumasi-Ghana.
OBJECTIVES
FTo examine the current situations of veterans’ facilities in Ghana and around the world.
FTo investigate the major challenges facing veterans.
FTo identify strategies/a set of design criteria to mitigate these challenges.
FTo design an accessible housing as part of the facilities to improve the welfare of the
veterans in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

METHODOLOGY FRAMEWORK
(Author’s construct., 2022)
04
MAJOR FINDINGS AND ANALYSIS
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS
q The existing facilities (housing) are in deplorable condition due to lack maintenance or
renovation works.
q Health-related complications as result of aging and injures during active service
q lack of special training for re-employment
q lack of the engagement of stakeholders for upgraded facilities into use to generate
revenue.
q Inadequate housing units for the veterans
q Inadequate welfare ,recreational and services facilities
q The encroachment of VAG lands due to undevelopment by section of the general pub.

CONCLUSION
q Lack policy reviews on the administration veterans-VAG facilities across Ghana.
q Lack of partisanship between VAG and stakeholders(built environment)professionals
q veterans are not involve in the management of the facilities across the country.
q An accessible housing as a step for the promotion of the welfare veterans in the
country.
Recommendations
q There is the need for a budget allocation for the renovation and maintenance of the

Design TASK
To design an accessible housing to improve the welfare of the
veterans.
Apart from being a refuge, it is considered as a
method of gaining job and a living, as well as
access to urban and community amenities and
proximity to attractive neighbors. The majority of
urban housing is either market-supplied or self-
built, with land, laws, and finance all playing a
role in house pricing and affordability.(CEPT
University 2022)
..Compound HOUSING ?
A housing that is appropriate in quality and
location and does not cost so much that it
prevents inhabitants from meeting other
essential living expenses or jeopardizes their
enjoyment of basic human rights.(UN-Habitat
2011)
....Urban HOUSING ?

INTRODCTION
consists of multiple households/families living
within a single building complex, whereas
courtyard houses typologies may have one
family/household. A compound house is a kind of
courtyard house, but not all courtyard houses are
compound houses .( Kuukuwa,2010 )

New-Urbanism
Is a planning and development strategy founded on th

Regionalism in architecture
is about the context and traditions of building in a
specific area. These structures, primarily homes, require
in-depth familiarity of the local climate, geology,
geography, and topography. For individuals who are
interested in sustainable architecture, regionalism is a
fascinating subject. (Regionalism in Architecture: Definition,

The design philosophyof the project is to create a design that is an excellent representation of the target group(veterans) and employ the use of local materials and forms that are link to the site Context, climate and culture. New-Urbanism Is a planning and development strategy founded on th e ideas that guided the construction of cities and town s over the past: accessible public spaces, close-knit nei ghborhoods, and walkable blocks and streets. Human- scaled urban design is a key component of New Urbani sm. (source: Austin Luxury Realty, 2012) Concept of Design House 8 (Jens Lindhe, 2020) Regionalism in architecture is about the context and traditions of building in a specific area. These structures, primarily homes, require in-depth familiarity of the local climate, geology, geography, and topography.
