PROCESS
Purwa Kumari (NIFT Alumani 2014)
“Lecture prepared for Design Students”
What is Design?
◦ Creative planning process that leads to useful products and systems.
◦ The word “design” is often used as a generic term that refers to
anything that was made by a conscious human effort.
◦ Design is also a process that is used to solve problems.
What is a Design Process?
◦ A purposeful method of planning practical
solutions to problems or a strategy used to
develop solutions to solve human needs or
wants.
◦ Its never final; there are always multiple
solutions to a problem.
◦ There is no certain criteria or fixed rules for
design, there are just some steps which are to
be followed as per the convenience.
Includes
◦ Includes some parameters
Brief, Aim, Concept, etc.
◦ Goes through some questions like
Why?, When?, Where?, Who?, How?
◦ A good design brief should answer all the above
written questions.

Steps of Design Process
◦ 1- Define the problem – Understand and analise the actual problem to be solved through design
◦ 2- Brainstorm- Think of the different keywords, characteristics
◦ 3- Research- Through books/internet, Conduct surveys/ interviews, etc.
4.Develop Ideas
◦ Develop multiple ideas that will solve the problem and meet
the requirements. The alternatives may all be quite diverse.
◦ Constraints:
- How will the solution actually work?
- What materials should I use?
- What should the product look like so that people will
buy it ?
- Will it be completed by the deadline?
- What size should it be?
◦ 5-Choose the Best Idea- Decide on an idea that best meets the criteria, fits within the constraints, and has the
least amount of negative characteristics.
◦ 6- Build a model or prototype- Test your idea
◦ 7 - Test and Evaluate- Test your ideas, think ask questions and revaluate
Is it safe for people and the environment?
Is it affordable?
Is it aesthetically pleasing (does it look good)?
Will it last as long as it needs to?
Does it meet the criteria and constraints?
Does it work?
◦ 8. Improve Design- After studying all test data and evaluating design solutions, you may need to make
changes.
◦ 9.Communicate Results- Present your design ideas to prove the design is worthy of manufacturing.
Examples:
- Poster
- Drawings
- Charts
- Prototypes
- PowerPoint presentation
- Reports
