Two types of cells give rise to teeth: epithelial cells and ectomesenchymal cells. Tooth development occurs in stages including initiation, proliferation, histodifferentiation, morphodifferentiation, and apposition. The advanced bell stage dictates the final size and shape of the tooth as the network of tissue matrix is formed.
