- Several surveys were conducted in Delhi from 1957-1995 to assess the need for a metro rail system. - The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was formed in 1995 and the Delhi Metro Project was approved in 1996. Work on Phase 1 started in 1998. - Phase 1 of the Delhi Metro project cost Rs. 60 billion but the costs revised to Rs. 89.27 billion. E.Sreedharan managed the project and completed it within time and cost constraints. - Future plans for the Delhi Metro include expanding the network to 244km and reducing construction costs per km.
