This document discusses the preparation and use of 1% sodium hypochlorite (JIK) for decontamination purposes. It provides the formula for diluting a 5% stock solution of JIK to produce 500ml of a 1% solution. Surfaces like bench tops and equipment in laboratories are decontaminated each morning using 1% JIK or other disinfectants like Dettol soap to kill microbes. Proper personal protective equipment and disposal procedures are followed.

2. DECONTAMINATION BY 1% JIK
 Sodium hypochlorite is a disinfectant and it functions well in
lower concentrations.
 Low concentrations are prepared from a stock solution of a
higher concentration.
Principle
Sodium hypochlorite when diluted forms hypochlorious acid
with more water molecule they enter into the cells through a
semi permeable membrane by osmosis hence bursting the germ
cells as the hypochlorite disrupts the nucleic material
destroying the microbe thereby killing it.

 Distilled water
 Measuring cylinder
 Jik stock solution
 Empty Labeled bottle

 Where V1-Required volume

Measure 100cm3 sodium hypochlorite and top up
with distilled water up to 500cm3 mark.

5.  Decontamination is done using gauze.
 It is done on surfaces including; bench tops and cupboards.
 For machines like fridges, clinical biochemistry analyzer, water
bath and distiller; decontamination is done by use of distilled water
reason being sodium hypochlorite is a bleaching agent and it will
cause corrosion of the metal surface of these equipments.
 Bench tops surfaces,cupboards and equipments are decontaminated
in the morning before carrying out any tests.
 For the floor it is cleaned in the morning or evening using soap, jik
and water.

7.  1% bleach is used to clean biological spills and highly contaminated
surfaces
 0.5% bleach is used to wipe surfaces
 Dettol soap is used for hand washing
 70% ethanol and Methylated spirit is used for decontamination of
skin surfaces
 5% Lysol is used in discarding jars, contaminated slides, pasture
pipettes
 Many disinfectants work by coagulating the protein part of existing
organisms .
Application

8.  Put on proper PPE ( gloves and lab coat)
 Using a gauze wet all the surfaces with a disinfectant.
 Wipe the surfaces by use of a gauze for a quick drying.

9.  After decontamination fill the decontamination logs.
