Immigrants to America between 1607-1911 sought both religious freedom and economic opportunity. In the early period of 1607-1790, many colonists from England wanted to escape religious persecution, while others sought wealth from trade or agriculture. While some succeeded, others like the early Jamestown settlers faced starvation and disease. Later between 1820-1915, immigrants from overcrowded Europe hoped for land, jobs, and freedom from famine or oppression. However, minorities faced discrimination and low wages upon arrival. They established ethnic communities for support.
