Statistics is a branch of mathematics that
deals with the collection, organization,
presentation, analysis, and interpretation
of data.

7. Did you know that…During biblical times,
Moses and David undertook what are now called
censuses- the counting of people under their
care. The Roman Empire required all citizens to
return to the city of their birth in order to
register, that is, to be counted and to be taxed.

8. The origin of the word statistics comes from the word
statistik, an Italian word which means stateman. The
word was first used by Gottfried Achenwall (1719-
1772), a professor at Marlborough in England and
Gottingen in Germany. However, its used was
popularized in the work of Sir John Sinclair entitled
Statistical Account of Scotland (1791-1799.
