3. Unique concept
Cuts through virtually any material
Suppresses, cools and extinguishes fires from safe position
outside of fire room
Mobile, high pressure water mist with minimal use of water
The only method with combined capabilities (penetrating,
extinguishing, mobile, minimum of water)

6. Key performance - Method
The Cutting Extinguishing Method combines flexible
ultra high pressure water mist and structure
penetration with use of Thermal Camera, PPV and
BA-attack
Minimizes the risk for crew
Buys time when time is crucial
Reduces water use and collateral damages to a
minimum
8. Typical Cobra Performance

9. Key performance – Trained personnel
Technique is the practical knowledge of the method,
tactics is how the technique is used. Thus, training
in technique and tactics are essential for crew to
achieve top performance
To accomplish the full effect of the cutting
extinguishing method, timing is of essence. Thus, all
links in chain of decisions must know, and consider,
the possibilities of the method, tactics and
technique, to make the right decisions at right time
10. Cutting Extinguisher Method Procedures
described in a real house fire, SE 2011
2: The BA team leader
leads the cobra attack and
evaluate the situation
regularly (Thermal
Camera-SCAN)…
3: PPV is prepared
together with the
hose for the
oncoming BA
attack…
4: After a total of 3 minutes COBRA
ATTACK the BA attack initiates
together with PPV into a cool,
smokeless and safe environment…
1: Officer evaluates (RISK
ASSESSMENT) the situation while
the cobra attack initiates…
5: The fully evolved villa fire was extinguished 8 minutes later with a
total of 180 liters water (no water damage).
11. 1. Officer Assessment – Cobra Attack
1: The Officer in charge at the
incident scene is also
responsible of the work
conditions for the personnel. He
initiates a COBRA ATTACK
almost immediately on arrival at
the scene.
This in line with buying time
through rapidly cooling the fire
gases, break the fire
development and get in control
of the fire
12. Workflow2. Thermal Camera Scan Sweden
from a real life villa fire,
2011
2: The BA team leader evaluates
the situation with THERMAL
CAMERA together with fire
behavior basics. Now he’s in
charge of the COBRA ATTACK,
supported by his two BA crew…
The BA team leader constantly
evaluate the situation to judge
when and how to change the
tactics.
13. 3. Preparation PPV and BA-attack
3: During the ongoing
COBRA ATTACK, the PPV
fan and the hose/s for the
BA attack are prepared.
The incident manager
gets in control of the fire
and may assess
conditions regarding BA
attack or other actions…
14. 4. BA-attack supported by PPV
4: After assessing temperature with
Thermal Camera, the BA-group can
initiate a BA-attack after only 3
minutes of COBRA ATTACK. The
temperature is now approx. 100 C,
thus a safer situation regarding
temperature, risk of back draught,
visibility, etc.
At the same time the BA-group
enters, the outside crew break the
windows and turn on the PPV fan to
evacuate the smoke/steam.
15. 5. Rest value evaluation
5: Using the Cutting
Extinguisher Concept; Cobra,
PPV, Thermal Camera and BA-
attack, approx. 8 minutes from
arrival, the fully evolved
compartment and construction
fire is put out in a safe way. Only
180 liters of water was used and
no water damage was found.
16. Performance in essence

17. Critical success factors of
Northampton FRS case
Search for alternative methods initiated by unacceptably high
number of fatalities in the UK
Strong senior level support
Add technology and method rather than replace leads to
acceptance among crew
Highly dedicated implementation plan – 6 units first year
(rather than buy one for evaluation)
High focus on training and methods
Cost cutting pressure but rational investments
Now forefront of UK modern firefighting and Center of
Excellence in training
