2. A Man With A Movie Camera Vertov Analysis
In A Man with a Movie Camera, Vertov does not portray the city of Moscow in a
realistic manner, but rather with the use of cinematic techniques and editing. His
intention was to capture and synchronize the worker with the mechanical in a joyful
relationship. The film emphasizes that work is joyful and uses imagery to display
the rhythm of the workers and the machines. An example of this joyful work can be
seen in the emotional expression of a woman working at a machine folding cigarette
boxes.
The camera plays an essential role in this film, and in a sense takes on the role of the
narrator. The camera takes the audience to place where they could normally not go.
Vertov seeks to create a sense of harmony between man and machine by displaying
3. Comedy Of Error Research Paper
In the first acts of The Comedy of Errors, Antipholus of Syracuse is inclined to
believe that witchcraft is brewing in Ephesus. According to Linda Alchin, in the 16th
century, Elizabethans blamed unexplainable events on witches. When there was an
outbreak of a terrible disease, an animal died, or a house burnt to the ground, witches
were blamed (Alchin). In our modern time, we have the scientific knowledge to
explain these events and for the most part, do not believe in the supernatural. There
are illusions to witchcraftin The Comedy of Errors that Shakespeare was endeavoring
to disprove the belief in witchcraft and the supernatural, which was widely accepted
in the Elizabethan time.
Historically, magic has been associated with language such as incantations, spells, and
charms. The whole of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This passage would have resounded with the Elizabethans who were versed in the
New Testament; in which the apostle Paul finds the city of Ephesus full of witchcraft
(Routh). This theme of the supernatural, which is literally related to sin, is referred to
throughout the play, considers that magic is the only reasonable reason for all the
bizarre happenings.
The Ephesians also come to believe that magic is astir, or that madness can be
cured by sorcery. The witchcraft portrayed in the play is ludicrous instead of
malevolent, however, Antipholus of Syracuse s apprehensions about wizards and
witches are achieved when the foolish Doctor Pinch s spell, I charge thee, Satan,
housed within this man, / to yield possession to my holy prayers (4.4.58 59). The
Doctor s character is portrayed curiously as a conjurer or a school teacher and
characterizes the satirical tone of the play. In most of Shakespeare s tragedies,
witchcraft is usually a destructive force, but in The Comedy of Errors, it is a whim
of school masters and a
4. One Decision Can Turn You Upside Down Short Story
One Decision Can Turn You Upside Down
When I was in 6th grade, two of my friends and I were doing what we always did,
riding around on the golf cart staying out of trouble, having the best time. I have
been friends with these two girls for almost ten years. We would tell each other
anything and we always went for golf cart rides to talk about anything and
everything. Since we were at a young age, we always would go ride around in the
woods and laugh about random things. One night we got together and were doing
what we regularly did.
This night, in particular, was very eventful. The sun was still setting, the air was
getting crisp, and the full moon was coming out. It was the beginning of fall and the
leaves were bright with fall colors. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I reached for her legs tenaciously and during that time when I was pulling her back,
the whole golf cart flipped on its side.
After we had flipped it, we were all shocked and said nothing. We felt impotent.
Because we were so young and had flipped this vehicle over, we then quickly
realized that we had not only flipped the golf cart, but we had flipped it in my front
yard. The large moon was in the sky, shining its light right on our mistake. We all
knew that my dad could see us at any second. I knew that if he saw us he would have
a grimace on his face, and if my dad would see us in this position, I would die.
All at once we ran over to one side of the golf cart and started pushing it back up
powerfully. Any act of succor would have been helpful during this time. Once we
got it back on all four tires, I looked to see if there was any damage to the golf cart,
thankfully, there was none. We then all got back onto the golf cart and started to
laugh about what had just happened. After we had shakily giggled for a while we
started to talk about what could have happened in that brief moment if we were
sitting in different positions, or if someone had hit their head. If something bad had
happened our lives could have changed. We talked to each other about what we
thought had just happened.
If I would have hit my head on the steering wheel, I could

6. House On Mango Street Analysis
(hook) Written by Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street is a beautiful
coming of age story from the perspective of a little Latina girl named Esperanza
Cordero, who has just moved to a new house on Mango Street with her family. The
story follows Esperanza and the people she encounters during her time on Mango
Street as she struggles to find herself as an individual/her identity. During the story,
Esperanzadiscovers how her culture and social class affects her, how she relates to
the roles of womenin her community, and how to process her hopes and dreams as
she matures. These pieces eventually come together in order to help Esperanza
form her identity. The shabby old house on Mango Street is all that Esperanza and
her family can afford at the moment, as they are very poor. Esperanza is happy that
her family owns a house, but she often feels ashamed and embarrassed to live in it.
For example, one day, a nun that passes by asks Esperanza where she lives. When
she points to her house, the nun asks, You live there? The way she [says] it
[makes] [her] feel like nothing. There. [she] lived there. [She] [nods]. (1.10) The
way that the nun says the word there makes Esperanza feel very small, like there is
something wrong with the house. Not only does Esperanza feel judged by people in
her community, she also feels judged by outsiders. Those who don t know any better
come into our neighborhood scared. They think we re dangerous. They think we will
attack them with shiny
7. Dbq Aztec Agriculture
Food is a big part of everyday life. People need to eat food to survive, because
without food a person will die. In the Aztec civilization there are two cultural
practices that stand out. These are: human sacrifice and agriculture. Many historians
have a mutual disagreement over which one should be emphasized over the other;
which practice deserves more attention. Here are three reasons why agriculture
should be more emphasized than human sacrifice: agriculture was crucial for
everyday living, it was well organized/ cleverly constructed, and it played a huge role
in Aztecculture.
The Aztecs, just like any living being needed food to survive. Agriculture provided
food since it was the practice of farming and became crucial. The Aztec farmers did
not only grow food for themselves, but also enough for their entire cities, like
Tenochtitlan (Doc B). This played a major role in trade and the economy. The
farmers used Chinampas which were small mounds of land that were very fertile (
they are still being used today in Mexico City) to farm. Agriculture did not only help
the Aztec people but also many people that they traded with. Agriculture helped the
Aztecs develop and expand as a civilization/empire. This is why agriculture should be

to farm off of for their families and empire. These systems are still used today and

Aztec civilization flourished and thrived for many years. The empire expanded

8. My Expeirences with the Foot-in-the-Door Phenomenon
As a class we have covered numerous concepts, theories and techniques in chapters
six, through eight and eleven in our textbooks and in class lectures. The concept in
which has intrigued me so far in the semester of social psychology is the foot in the
door phenomenon. The foot in the door phenomenon is described in our textbooks
as the tendency for people who have first agreed to a small request to comply later
with a large request (Virginia Commonwealth University, 2013). It can be
understood as asking someone (i.e. friend, family member, co worker or stranger)
agreeing to do a small service for you then later they are more willing to agree to a
larger favor that you ask of them. Most of this phenomenon is based on how you
present the first small request to the targeted person. Your initial attitude follows
the behavior. The foot in the door phenomenon is a persuasion strategy used to
manipulate someone to submit to your requests. It starts off as an insignificant
gradual process and before you know it you are giving a lot of support or service to
someone without noticing it right away. This technique is seen regularly in public
organizations like charities. An example would be a charity would ask the public to
sign a petition or wear a button to support the organization. After this small request
the campaigner then goes back after a week (give or take) and asks for a donation.
The person then feels obligated to give to the charity after submitting to the initial

Dystopia The New Utopia In the novel Anthem and the movie The island Rand and
Bay use the idea of dystopia to connect similar properties of characters, symbols,
and societies. In both works the characters of Equality and Liberty relate to the
characters of Lincoln and Jordan in many ways. Through their curiosity of the ways
how society works and their rebellion. Equality and Lincoln show how they are like
in their thinking and actions. Lincoln Wants to know more. and He wishes there was

overall ways of the society. Lincoln demonstrates his natural curiosity and that he is

In Anthem the authorities use the Uncharted Forest fear to control the population
and to insure they are narrow minded. They do this with the help of old Myths that
say whoever goes inside the forest does not come back due to the lack of food and
the vigorous animals. Also, they engrave fear in their minds to control them
indirectly. Similarly, The Island authorities use the same concept by telling the
people to not escape to the outside world because they will be contaminated by
pathogens and die. Also, they use fear and/or the outside world to control the
population to make sure their only goal in life is to work and to go to the

Taylor Kapitanek
Biology 200A 005
30 September, 2014 Abstract
This Estimating Osmolarity by Change in Weight of Potato Tuber Tissue experiment
was conducted to determine the molarity of sucrose concentration where the mass of
potato tuber segments does not change, indicating an isosmotic concentration.
Indicating an isosmotic concentration was done by calculating the change of mass of
the potato tuber cells prior to incubation against the mass after incubation in the
sucrose solution. My groups goal was to determine what type of osmotic concentration
was created as compared to the potato tissues. The results of my groups lab indicated
three different osmotic concentrations. At this sucrose concentration the sucrose
solution is isotonic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The percent change in mass of the potato cells is positive when incubated in
concentrations of 0.0, 0.1, and 0.2 M of sucrose. At these three solutions, a
hypertonic environment was observed within the cell. The percent change in mass of
the potato cells begins to decrease and become negative when incubated in
concentrations of 0.3, 0.4, 0.5M, and 0.6M of sucrose. At these four specific
solutions, a hypotonic environment was obtained within the cell. Reflecting on the
data, a line of best fit crosses the x axis where an isotonic relative osmotic
concentration is accomplished. An isotonic solution was achieved when the sucrose
solution is around 0.175 M. Based on the results from the experiment, our alternative
hypothesis was

Cornelia de Lange Syndrome typically presents with a constellation of distinctive
features affecting several different parts of the body. There is a wide degree of
variation between individuals with the disorder in the presentation and severity of
symptoms; however, the features described below represent a typical presentation.
Slow growth during both fetal and post natal development is a characteristic feature
of the disorder. Approximately 90% or more of patients display delayed skeletal
maturation, and about 50% were noted to have intrauterine growth retardation (2).
Because of this, individuals with Cornelia de Lange syndrome tend to be short in
stature, with height and weight falling below the fifth percentile throughout life (3)....

Other limb issues such as small hands (micromelia) and incurved fifth finger
(clinodactyly) are prevalent (3,1). In addition to the above core features, the
syndrome tends to have effects on several major systems of the body. For example,
sensorineural hearing loss impacts 80% of children with CdLS; approximately
40% are severely affected (3). Opthalmological issues, such as myopia (near
sightedness) and nystagmus are also common. Patients may also have inflammation
of the eyelid of droopy eyelids (ptosis) (1). Neurological issues can include sleep
problems and seizures. Approximately 25% of diagnosed individuals experience
seizures (3), which can usually be well controlled with standard medical intervention
(4). Neuroimaging has shown characteristic features such as enlarged ventricles at
the basal cisterns, undergrowth of the brainstem and cerebral vermis, and atrophied
white matter especially in the frotal lobes. High pain tolerance caused by problems
with peripheral neuropathy have also been reported (4). Cornelia de Lange Syndrome
can also include cardiovascular concerns. Congenital heart disease occurs in
approximately 25% of individuals with the disorder. The most common
13. My Ideals When I Entered College
Intro Inputs
My ideals when I entered college vary greatly from the time I graduated three short
years later. As a senior at Eden High School, I was one of the few Caucasian
students in a small class of only fifteen students. Majority of my classmates were
Hispanic, and so was majority of the remaining student population. Growing up
with little to no diversity caused me to adopt more of the Hispanic cultures and
beliefs. For example, I never wished for an extravagant sweet sixteen party, but
instead dreamed of the perfect quinceanera. Due to the size of the school, the
opportunity to participate and be involved in anything, if not everything, was the
norm. I often found my days packed full of various extra curricular activities
ranging from sports to FCCLA to FFA. My schedule taught me to be disciplined,
organized, and very aware of the ticking clock in the background. The down sides
included when I developed insomnia, sleeping only three to four hours a night; most
likely due to being overwhelmed and constantly stressed out. As I progressed through
high school, my Christian faith held strong. I often attended multiple church
sponsored activities outside of the regular Sunday service. My faith was one of the
most important factors in my life. I held strong onto these beliefs, for they were some
of the only consistent factors in my ever evolving schedule.

When the time approached for applying and choosing a university, I applied to only a

Ancient Greece had standards for its women that dictated how women were expected
to compose and behave themselves, in both the home and in public. Women were
largely expected to behave themselves in accordance to Greek mythological character
Penelope, whom was feminine and particularly dedicated to her spouse, which
confirmed the value of chastity. The concept illustrated by Penelope was rejected by
Spartan women, whom challenged the norms of extreme femininity and were even
expected to partake in rigorous physical instruction (Germain, 2013). Euripides, a
tragedian of classical Athens even stated in his productions, No Spartan girl could
grow up modest even if she wanted to. You never find them at home; no, they go out
with bare thighs and loose clothes, to wrestle and run races along with the young men

Contrarily advertising has its disadvantages, regardless of the legal ramifications,

17. How Did Christians Justify Their Claim to the Holy Land B
Final Paper
How did Christians justify their claim to the
Holy Land before and during the Crusades?
One of the most significant and remarkable incidents of the Middle Ages was the
series of conflicts known collectively as the Crusades. Generally these conflicts were
militant pilgrimages to the Levant (though sometimes elsewhere) undertaken by
medieval Europeans in the name of Christendom. Though there were many political
and social issues involved in the whole affair, the primary theme, however
superficial, was religious. The adversaries in these wars were non Christians, namely
Muslims, who were widely seen as the oppressors of Eastern Christians. Those
engaged in the Crusades, especially the authorities preaching and ... Show more

Robert of Rheims was a monk living in France during the time of the First Crusade.
His chronicle of the conflict, written around 1107, is one of the most widely
studied sources of Crusading history. For accounts of the actual battles he used
other contemporaneous sources, such as the Gesta Francorum, but he claims to
have actually been present at the Council of Clermont. He gives a very detailed
description of that event, and attributes a very extravagant, oratorical speech to
Pope Urban II. Robert s account was likely commissioned (by the abbot of his
monastery) as a response to some level of discontent with the existing chronicles of
the First Crusade. It may also have served as an attempt to encourage another
expedition to the Holy Land, as it plainly glorifies the First Crusade and
emphasizes its more romantic elements. Since Robert is clearly supportive of
Crusading, one must be wary of the bias in his account. His possible agenda of
preaching another Crusade may very well compromise his account s reliability in
certain respects. In short, Robert s role as an eyewitness at Clermont certainly lends
him credibility, but it does not imply that his chronicle is devoid of embellishments
or propagandistic aspects. La Chanson d Antioche, or the Song of Antioch, is an epic
poem dating from the late 12th century whose central subject is the Siege of Antioch.

18. Examples Of Reasonable Doubt In 12 Angry Men
One of the fundamental themes in the film 12 Angry Men is the idea of reasonable
doubt. Reasonable doubt , as explored in the film, is the concept that you should
not vote guilty if there is reasonable doubt , no matter how sure others on the jury
are. Often when an individual does doubt a pre conceived thought, similar to the
blame of the defendant in this case, they are frequently met with hate and cynicism.
12 Angry Men emphasizes the importance of fighting for one s beliefs. One of the
possibilities in this film is that many of the jurors are arguing as a result of their
misunderstanding of what a reasonable doubt is. Juror #3 always talks about how
you can t prove something or how you could possibly know something. The fact is,
19. Reflection Paper On Lacrosse
Over the past four years of McEachern High School, I ve always been in this shell
that kept me in a comfortable place to not try anything new. That all changed when
I decided to put my big girl pants on and try out for the lacrosse team. So I went to
try outs and already I felt so out of place, but looking back at it, it was completely
normal. Being a stranger in the village means to be the outcast; a person who s not
with the crowd or just someone new. Trying out something and not knowing what to
do or what lacrosseeven is, was very confusing, frustrating and yet exciting to learn
something new. So when the results came back, I found out that I not only made
the team, but I got a varsity spot. Even though I made it to the advanced team,
everyone who has been there, had their own cliques and friends and being a part of
a team, where it seems like no one will talk to you was pretty devastating. Then
when I score a goal in the last game, that s when I really started making friends.
It was my sophomore year and my friend Lizabeth would tell me how great lacrosse
is, and what an experience it can be. That s when I tried out for the first time and I
felt great so strong and confident. I imagine my skills from marching band would
actually come in handy, boy was I wrong. So I didn t make the team the first time
and it kind of destroyed me. Then junior year rolled in and I was not planning to do
anything that year. Suddenly, Lizabeth vociferate to me can you try out again, for me
20. Reflection On The Value Of A Book
Final Essay #3 Personal
In this class I learned how to judge a grate book. From my point of view a books
greatness is judged from the eye of the beholder. But taking this class has helped
me to better articulate in my own mind how a good book should be judged. What I
mean is that I have always known if a book was good when I read it but now I know
how to quantify and explain why I think that way. In this way, I feel that a really
great book has something special it can teach everyone. One good quality of a
good book is that a good book is persistent in its storytelling and is written in such a
way as to make the story believable. I have seen this in the books we have read for
class all of them are able to put the story together without any potholes. A good
book also helps you to feel empathy for the characters. This is an important part of
the book because it helps you to imagine the story and be able to enjoy the story
better. If the characters are interesting then the reader is able to disband disbelief
easier.
Ever since the young age of second grade I have loved books. I was always found
with a nose in a book. Because of this I feel that I have a fairly good background on
books and so therefore can determine if, in my own opinion, the book is really
good or not. But as in all things there is more to learn and over the course of this
semester I have had to stretch my reading capability to its very limits. I have really
enjoyed this opportunity to read some of the most

22. Principles That Can Help Better My Sales
Three principles that can help better my sales
Having a positive mindset will make you become a winner in your sales. What you
say to yourself has such a huge effect on how your performance of sales will turn
out. Your belief system will either determine a positive attitude about your success or
a negative attitude. What you say and think about your sales success is very powerful
and can have an affect on your confidence as a whole. Your thoughts can and will
set you up for failure if you let them. Some ways to sell more is believing in what
you are selling. Making a goal of how many sales you want to make that day and
positively envisioning yourself reaching that goal. I have watched so many people fail

I have already been practicing the positive mindset principle into my life. Positive
thinking has always been the way I think and I will continue to do that in all that I
do. I plan to remain positive even when sales or life gets hard. Everything will get
better when you are positive.
Sales is important no matter what your career becomes. Everything you do, you sell.
Our mind is very powerful and will only break us down because we are human and
are harsh on ourselves. If you expect to sell whatever it is we are selling, than your
first principle is to be optimistic rather than pessimistic. To stay on the positive track
of sales you must overcome the advisory and the negative thoughts he brings to
mind. So lets say sales does become your job, and you aren t doing so well because
you just started off. Does this mean you start believing your negative thoughts and
give up ? No you don t. This is normal to think you are lacking the skill of a talented
salesman but talent takes time. Here is an example of a pessimistic thought process
every salesman goes through. It s called the ABCD model. A stands for adversity.
Your thoughts are telling you you suck and can t sell anything. B stands for belief. If
you start to believe that you suck at selling things than that will lead to poor sales
techniques in your future
23. The Effects Of Foster Care On Children Essay
Everywhere across the world, more and more children are being placed into foster
care or a welfare type system. Foster care can benefit children or harm them; the
effects of foster care differ for every individual. These types of systems often have a
major effect on young children s physiological state. Children entering in foster care
are often malnourished and have untreated health problems. A high percentage of
children who are placed in these types of systems have mental health, physical
health, and/or developmental issue which often originates while the individuals are
still in the custody of the biological parents. Children in foster care should be
provided with a healthy and nurturing environment which often provides positive
long term results. The age of children in a foster care varies across the world, but it
is often seen that majority of these children are young (George para. 1). There are
more young children in the system because younger children require more adequate
care than older children that are already in the system. Placing these children in
welfare systems is supposed to be a healing process for them. Although this is
supposed to be a healing process, statistics say these children have a negative
experience while being in these systems, but this is not always the case. A number of
children in foster care fall sucker to continuous neglect and recurrent abuse with the
lack of nurturing and an unstable environment. These same children often have unmet
24. Semiotics In That 70s Show
Introduction Semiotics can be defined as the study of symbols and signs
particularly with regard to how they are used to create meaning and communicate it
to others. Semiotics also offers tools that make it possible to uncover the cultural
conventions and codes that highlight the period to which a setting was placed and
interpret meanings behind the symbols (Berger, 2014). In the pilot episode of That
70s Show , it is possible to apply semiotic analysis since there are various signs and
symbols that reveal different elements of the show. Different signifiers in the episode
and what they portray helps the audience to interpret the message that the producer is
trying to convey. That 70s Show has a large presence of signs, signifiers, codes and
ideologies that relate to teenage relationships and their lives in general during the
1970s. Additionally, it is important to highlight character placement and the semiotics
involved pertaining to the viewers.
Parents son relationship The character Eric and his father form an important conflict

Although the producer does not make this evident, there are several signs that
highlight this point. For one, there is one teenager who would be holding a stick of

normally signifies the use of drugs and in particular marijuana. It is also evident from
the teenagers reactions that they are under the influence of marijuana. They laugh
uncontrollably and their statements do not seem to make sense. The camera also pans
from one individual to the other to symbolize the passing of the
25. Against Drinking Bottled Water
Have you ever been thirsty and wanted some water? You went to a store and bought
plastic bottled water, drank it and threw it away? But, did you know bottled water is
bought hundreds of thousands of times about every day? I am against drinking
bottled water because I think that it s hurting animals, costing 2000 times more than
tap water, and making global warming worse. Buying bottled watercan lead to huge
consequences and it will affect us desperately.
The first reason for why I am against bottled water is that bottled water is that it is
killing animals. Many sea animals/animals are dying because of these plastic bottles.
People just drink them and throw them away properly or they just throw it on the
ground. Sea Animals/Animals think it s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tap water is basically like free! Just find a drinking fountain, press a button and
there! You can only get bottled water by going to a store and buying it. For
example, many of the bottled water brands say that Our water has fresh taste and is
cheap. That s not true, it s 2,000 times more expensive, and it doesn t even taste good
anyways. Did you know that the plastic on the bottle costs more than the water inside
the bottle? This is like getting water, but you re paying more for it because of the
plastic on it.This is way more expensive, and tap water is way better and cheaper.
There really is no reason to buy bottled water, if you can get it way easier from
your home s sink then going to a store and purchasing a plastic bottle 2000 times
the price of tap water. Did you remember how I said that bottled water brands were
trying to convince you to buy their water? Most of their water is just filtered tap
water inside a plastic bottle! According to Annie Leonard, an American proponent,
Bottled water costs 2000 times more than tap water. Can you imagine paying 2000
times the price of anything else? How about a $10,000 sandwich? It isn t smart to
buy something more expensive when you can get it for about free. This is like
getting a sandwich but 2000 times the price of a normal sandwich. This is like
bottled water being 2000 times more expensive than tap
26. Persuasive Essay On Concussions In Sports
Dreams Have you ever had a dream that you wanted so bad and you would do
anything to obtain that dream to make it a reality? Most kids if you asked them
what they wanted to be when they grow up they would probably say something
along the lines of an astronaut, firefighter, or maybe even a doctor, but what I have
found to be the most common answer to this question is to be in some sort of
major league sport such as baseball, basketball, or football. Most kids can t really
perceive the sacrifice and consequences that come with having this dream. The
ones that have realized what it takes to make it in professional sports won t let
people or the hard work set them back they will keep moving forward and keep
their eye on their goal so their dream isn t a dream, it s a reality. One of the most
dangerous sports to play is football. There are so many risk that come with playing
this sport and some people don t see it. I ve heared these stories of how players are
getting concussions or how this player is on their fifth concussion, but they still
come back even though they know what risk it has and how it will affect them in
their future. For some the reward of playing outweighs the risk as per T.J. Lang
offensive linemen for the Detroit Lions said in an interview with Kyle Meinke
from mlive.com There s risk in everything you do in life. I don t think players are
immune to the fact that there are a lot of great risks in this game and that s a
choice that a lot of guys have made in the past that they don t want to do it and you
respect it. But for a guy like me, I think the benefits outweigh the risks. Just
everything that comes along with being able to be a professional football player,
live the lifestyle play at the highest level it outweighs it, and playing the sport you
love (For T.J. Lang, mlive.com). As mentioned in the quote every professional
football player views there injuries differently and some would rather play through
it because they love the life of a football player and they wouldn t give it up for
anything. One of the things mentioned in the story with T.J Lang was `Chronic
Traumatic Encephalopathy or commonly referred to as CTE. This is a degenerative
brain disease caused by trauma to the head.

Literary Analysis of Battle Royal I m writing an analysis of Battle Royal by Ralph
Ellison. It is told from the first person point of view. This is a story about a young
African American named Ralph Ellison, who is trying to be accepted by white
society. He is offered the opportunity to read his speech he had written for his
graduation at a gathering of the town s leading white citizens (p.286). Ralph Ellison
is told that he should partake in the Battle Royal before giving his speech as part of

To top it off they blind fold all of the boys just to make it more amusing. They

And then they force them to pick up fake coins off of an electrified rug. Shocking
them and getting enjoyment from their pain. This is a very racist story. But
unfortunately it truly reflects on how these individuals were treated during this time.
The big shots only want to be controlling racists, and get enjoyment from this. They
will not accept any behavior from the African Americans except submission. The
idea of social equality between them and the African Americans is quite appalling
for them (p.297). They are strictly set against this and will probably do what ever it
takes to prevent this from happening. I liked the ambition of Ralph, his determination
to make sure that he is heard. He really feels as though his speech will make a huge
impact for his people in his community. He is trying to become accepted into a
society that does not want to accept him or his people. I agree with Paula Caudle,
Naomi Lancaster, and Andy Stamper Students, University of North Carolina at

Despite the societal discord that exists around the ethics of genetic modification,
certain genetically modified organisms (GMOs) undoubtedly offer incredible
opportunities for the advancement of medicine. In particular, transgenic domestic
cats have contributed to the generation of biomedical models of humandiseases over
the past several years. What have come to be known as glow in the dark cats are
actually cats whose somatic cells have been injected with fluorescent proteins via
transgenesis. Efficient techniques are indeed needed for introducing transgenes into a
living organism so that it will express a certain new trait and subsequently transmit
that trait to its offspring. The introduction of exogenous genes into living organisms
has the potential to treat, cure, and prevent diseases because it allows for the
manipulation of the organism s genomic structure.
33. Immanuel Kant s Universal Law
Immanuel Kant is searching for moral laws that all people can follow. Kant wants
these laws, or moral principles, to be universal and necessary. He believes that we
should not be looking at how people currently behave, but how they ought to
behave (78). All humans have a will (83). Kant believes our will is not always
good and we have to ensure that our reason is commanding our will to be good by
fulfilling our duties (78). We should know the moral worth of our actions by how
much we have followed our duty, not by our individual desires and inclination (78).
However, we must do our duty because we want to and not because we should.
The command of the will through our reason is moral principle. The formula for a
moral principle is called an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He believes that each person has absolute worth and deserves respect. We should
not be using others or ourselves as only instruments to gain something else (86).
However, this applies to people and not animals since Kant believes that rational
beings are the only creatures that could follow a rational and universal law of
nature. We can use animals, or any thing in nature as instruments to gain something
else (like raising a cow to drink its milk). He would like to believe that one day a
Kingdom of Ends would exist. This kingdom would be where all people treat
themselves and others as ends in themselves and not merely as means, but, even Kant
admits, it might be impossible to achieve that goal fully in a society

Energy Crisis Interrelated to Global Warming. Photovoltaic Cell A Possible

prices dramatically increased due to the limited amount of available oil. Global
warming is considered as a byproduct of energy crisis, because as oil continues to
burn in the refining process, CO2 is constantly emitted to the atmosphere at a fast rate

One of the possible solutions to solve these problems is the replacement of
renewable energy, solar energy, which converts sun energy directly to usable
energy such as electricity. This will possibly slow down the process of energy
crisis and global warming. 3 Results and Discussion Almost everything in our daily
lives depends on oil as a major energy source, automobiles, freeways, commutes, air
travel, food and heater/air conditioning. Since the production of oil is considered
cheap and convenient in economic terms, people rarely consider alternative
sources of energy. Until recently, the energy crisis has worsened. This is indicated
by the rising of oil prices. The world, especially the U.S. is highly depending on the
Middle Eastern oil because oil productions in other places are constantly declining.
Not only city residents are dependent on oil, but also the farmers. Farmer

one steer. (The Coming World Energy Crisis, 2005). Since oil is a non renewable
energy source, the oil production will definitely be depleted. The world has already
consumed about half of the endowment of oil, and the discovery rate for new oil has
decreased in the past 40 years. As the world population increases, the corresponding

Technological Advancements in Ancient China that Changed History
As one of the first civilizations, ancient China grew into the largest superpower in all
of Asia (Strayer, 2012, pp. 133). Ancient China impacted history through their military
conquests, major historical figures, and most significantly, founded a technological
breakthrough for the world, metallurgy. Metallurgy is the branch of science and
technology concerned with the properties of metals and their production and
purification (Oxford, 2010). The Chinese made great advancements in metallurgy as
it emerged from the Neolithic period and then as it progressed into the Iron Age.
Early evidence of the origination of the technologies used to make bronze alloys is

40. The Importance Of Population Development In Australia
200 years after Australia s Indigenous forcibly had to share their land, the growth of
population and development that Australia has experienced is unprecedented.
Currently Australia s population stands at 24 Million and it is on a continuous rise,
due to a combination of both, a high birth rate and a significant number of immigrants
per annum. As a multicultural nation, the immigrationintake is a major factor, and is
said to have generated just over half (56%) of population growth, this is due to the
demand to settle permanently in Australia, work for an amount of time or study as
student (Wilson, 2017). Furthermore, interest in population policy was once again
visited in 2010, when the current Prime Minister Kevin Ruddproclaimed that he
supported a Big Australia , along with a released prediction that by 2050 Australia
s population would reach 36 Million (Brown, 2011, pp.1). However, the opposition
leader Tony Abbott, took this opportunity to gather support from the public, and
argued for a sustainable population policy, and calling Rudd out on a reckless
commitment , which Julia Gillard once Rudd was ousted, was also quick to favour,
focusing her views on a sustainable approach to population growth (Brown, 2011,
pp.2). The population policy debate is widely discussed and a driver for public
concern, but the birth rate and the rate of net overseas migration is on a continuous

ever increasing amount of interracial marriages, along with interracial relationships.
Since then there also has been a greater increase in the public being exposed to
mass media. There have been numerous studies on interracial relationships, with
variables like wars, legal matters, immigration and even military occupation. We
will examine in this paper if media exposure has an impact on cross cultural or
interracial relationship in relation to immigration to the United States. I reason that
there is a correlation between public opinion views and legal status of immigration
to views on interracial relationships. We see a recent example of this with Barack

When I came up closer I had to wait a few minutes while Sheryl the CSR was in the

asked what I wanted. I replied with: Can I have a chocolate chip cookie Sheryl said
sure and began to reach for my requested cookie but before she could I interrupted
her asking if I could get my initials in icing on my cookie. I explained that it was by

44. Women In Paradise Lost
The epic poem Paradise Lost, by John Milton, portrays the fall of the angel Satan
and the struggle between good (God) and evil (Satan). Milton shows the fall of
man and the first disobedience through the man characters Adam and Eve. Milton
begins by explaining the ways in which paradise, the Garden of Eden, was created
along with the ways man and woman were formed. Through this process Milton
displays Eve inferior to Adam and God, and it stays this way throughout the poem.
Eve is constantly blamed for all the mistakes and is under the tyranny of Adam and
God. Milton uses Eve to display his view of women by showing how she is both
cursed and blessed, how she becomes the scapegoat of the poem, and how her
rebellion against God is justified. Milton begins showing his view of woman by
displaying how Eve is both cursed and blessed. At first Milton s view of women is
degrading because he blames everything on the woman and nothing on the man. He
lets man control woman and blame her because of the mistakes she has made even
through man made the same mistake. Once both Adam and Evehave eaten the fruit
Adam began to tell Eve everything she did wrong. He said, Out of my sight, thou
serpent, that name best/ Befits thee with him leaguer, thyself as false (353). Adam
compared Eve to the serpent saying that she was like the devil. This makes Eve feel
even more inferior to men because Adam takes none of the blame for himself. This
shows that Milton thinks the blame should be put on
45. The Integration Clause Contained Herein
In further support of its position that the 2007 agreement constitutes a substitute
contract, National Surety cites the integration clause contained therein which
provides: [t]he Parties do hereby acknowledge and agree that this Agreement
constitutes their entire understanding with respect to the matters herein set forth. (E.
890; Appellant s Brief at p. 10) This argument is easily dispensed with because the
scope of the integration clause is limited with respect to the matters herein set forth.
In this case, the matters herein set forth relate only to the payment dispute that arose
toward the completion of the project. Not only is the integration clause in the 2007
agreement clearly not broad enough to nullify the AIA Contract, it... Show more

(Appellant s Brief at 12, 15 (quoting Leisner, 252 Md. at 555 ( There does not have to
be an expressed intention to substitute the new agreement for the previous contract.
)). Not only does this conclusion belie the terms of the 2007 agreement that expressly
incorporate the AIA Contract, but this conclusion defies common sense. The parties
do not dispute that the 2007 agreement arose out of a payment dispute between WCS
and Metropolitan. The bargain reached in that agreement was a compromised sum of
payment to WCS in exchange for the release of WCS s claims for payment. Neither
the text of the 2007 agreement nor the circumstances of that transaction evince any
reason why the parties would have agreed to revive National Surety s subrogation
rights, as those rights had nothing to do with the subject of the 2007 settlement
agreement. Stated differently, the consideration exchanged in the 2007 agreement
indicates that the Waivers did not come within the scope of that agreement. The
truism that the 2007 agreement is not a substitute contract is further demonstrated by
the fact that counsel for National Surety expressly conceded to the Circuit Court that
the 2007 agreement was intended to discharge fewer than all the rights and
obligations of the AIA Contract. [NATIONAL SUREY]:They want to put the
relationship to bed, binding, and ignore the old agreement in replacement for the
rights and obligations under this agreement. THE COURT:With some
46. What Are The Different Weighting Methods Used For...
Results
This section describes some of the different weighting methods for combining effect
sizes across studies when conducting meta analysis. This section will focus on
methods used for binary outcome data and effect measures such as relative risks and
odds ratios. The section will first introduce fixed effect and random effects analyses.
It will then describe weighting methods that can be used for these analytic approaches.
Fixed effect versus random effects analyses
Fixed effect and random effects models are the two most common approaches used
when conducting a meta analysis (Borenstein, Hedges, Higgins, Rothstein, 2010).
The distinction between these approaches is both conceptual and statistical in nature.
The fixed effect model ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although both fixed effect and random effects models will generally give more
weight to larger studies with lower variance estimates, the weights will be relatively
more balanced with a random effects model because it assumes that each of the effect
sizes in the analysis are estimating a different true effect (Borenstein, Hedges,
Rothstein, 2007). Thus, random effects models will give more weight to smaller
studies with higher variance estimates compared to fixed effect models.
In contrast, the weights for a fixed effect model will be more extreme than those of a
random effects model because it is assumed that the best estimate of the effect size
will be from the largest study with the lowest variance (Borenstein et al., 2007).
Consequently, compared to a random effects model, the pooled or summary effect
for a fixed effect model will be closer to the effect obtained from the largest study
with the lowest variance. With respect to the variance estimates of the pooled or
summary effect, random effects model will result in higher variances than fixed
effect models because of the added between study variability assumed to be present.
The assumptions in a fixed effect analysis may only be appropriate in a limited
number of situations. For example, if studies included in a meta analysis were
conducted using a similar methodology by recruiting participants in a similar manner

competition but in its history it has not always worked. United Airlines has tried to
make mergers without the approval of the union and were not able to complete it
when the department of justice said that the merger would not happen because it
would bring a loss in competition. One of the things that has helped the business,
is that they use a hub and spoke method for their passengers. This allows the
company to provide many different air ports and terminals that its customers can
use and also helps to stream line flight schedules and saves the company millions
of dollars every year. Partnering with these major companies to form a global
alliance helps to circumvent national laws, share resources to develop additional

compete globally.

49. Analysis Of The Right Stuff By Tom Wolfe
The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe chronicles the beginning of the United States space
program and the Space Race against the Soviets through the eyes of America s first
astronauts and those around them in the style of new journalism. The Right Stuff
may seem like an odd title for a book about astronauts and space exploration, as it
appears to have nothing to do with either, but it is a theme that is explored throughout
the book. Put simply, the right stuffis a quality that a test pilot or astronaut possessed
that enabled them to be the best. It was not typical bravery, a person either had it or
they didn t, and its possessors seemed to be above the rules.
The right stuff was not only classic bravery as one would imagine, but bravery was

Even so, there wasn t a specific test to prove if one had it or didn t have it. Instead,
it was a continuous pyramid of tests that one must conquer, and those who failed to
prove themselves at any level of the pyramid certainly did not have the right stuff.
Wolfe notes that, ...the idea was to prove at every foot of the way up that pyramid
that you were one of the elected and anointed ones who had the right stuff and
could move higher and higher and even...that you might be able to join that special
few at the very top..., the very Brotherhood of the Right Stuff itself. Every level in
the pyramid presented more challenging demands where, ...the world was once
again divided into those men who had the right stuff to continue the climb and
those who had to be left behind in the most obvious way. Those who failed to prove
themselves and were left behind most definitely did not have the right stuff and
were left to pursue a career in a less demanding wing of flight testing where the
concept of the right stuff did not pertain. In the early levels of the pyramid some
people were left behind because they couldn t take the coursework or were unable to
complete a phase in their training such as carrier landings Others were left behind
because they were deemed medically unfit to take on the task of becoming a test
pilot, something that was beyond their control but was sometimes still seen as a
failure. In the higher and more dangerous levels of the pyramid some were left behind
only because they were no longer alive to continue climbing the pyramid. When faced
with this reality some men would voluntarily decide to no longer continue climbing
the pyramid, although this meant sacrificing the notion of ever having the right

How Effective/ Ineffective are Services
Effectiveness/Ineffectiveness
There will always be a question of effectiveness versus ineffectiveness of any
program. In the matter of child welfare that will always be a question. There is
increasing emphasis on the importance of child welfare outcomes, such safety,
permanency, and well being. The Child and Family Service Reviews showed that
children who have been victims of child maltreatment before are 96% more likely
to experience a recurrence that those who were not (US DHHS, 2008). The highest
risk period for recurrence was 30 to 60 days following the initial CPS referral, and
decreased over time. Recurrence was more common while a CPS was still opened.

These two chart files review studies of 148 cases discovered that SBC can be
implemented across cases differing in certain variables. Implementation was greatest
when teams of child welfare supervisors and workers were trained together. Results
showed that workers were more engaged in case planning and service acquisition for
families when Solution Based Casework was implemented. These workers were
more likely to contact referents directly and attend initial sessions with their
clients in order to develop collaborative service plans. Families were more
compliant with requirements backed by higher rates of completion of goals
assigned by caseworkers. These families achieved more goals than families the
Solution Based Casework was not use on. Another variable that impacted success
with the Solution Based Casework model was the history families had with child
welfare. According to Antle, et al. these families achieved more goals than those
who were not previously involved with the system. If families had prior cases that
were already worked, then they had made progress in parenting. This progress and
exiting the system could be viewed as a strength, and a period of time the family
exhibited no problems. The model requires case workers to indentify strengths and
remain involved with direct contact with

England was never well governed in the reign of Edward 6th
How far do you agree with this?
Edward VI inherited the throne in 1547 at the infant age of 9. Because of his
youth, he had two advisors. The first was his uncle, the Duke of Somerset, who
became Lord Protector, and for the first two and a half years of Edward s reign,
Somerset advised and guided the young king. Somerset was replaced by the Duke of
Northumberland. Edward was a mere figurehead, the Lord Protector controlled the
majority of his government but how well was England governed during the reign of

The abolition of chantries in 1547 under Edward allowed the money gained to help
those who most needed, particularly children however what about other finical
policies/plans? Throughout this period there were disastrous economic problems.
Many of them were caused by debasement. This was where a small percentage of
the value was removed from each coin as it was made and then used to make new
coins. This helped in the short term, but led to inflation and worse problems later.
This was a huge problem for peasants, who normally spent around 80% of their
income on food. The population also increased from about 2.3 million in 1500 to 3
million in Edward s reign, as well as continuous military expenditure which amounted
to around 3.5 million between 1544 and 1550.All these led to huge inflation and
unemployment, moreover there were lower wages and

Milestone #2: Terrorism relating to the world

The Taliban is an Afghani and Pakistani terrorist group. They are a large
organization, with a religious base. The group, like several other terrorist
organizations, have extremist views in relation to Islam. They operate primarily in
the Middle East, but also operate elsewhere in the world. In this paper the focus will
be on the Taliban s relationship with the world outside of their comfort zone.

In respect to the nature and motivation of their attacks the two fields are extremely
closely related which was seen in their attack on the University. Their political
ideologies are interchangeable with their religious ideologies they have the same
ultimate goal. Although the Taliban can be classified as both domestic and
international terrorist, the majority of their actions are domestic terrorism where they
carry out attacks on their home region and their own religious affiliates. The Taliban
often carries out attacks on their own people. The Federal Bureau of Investigation
identifies domestic terrorism with the following three characteristics: involve acts
dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law; appear intended (i) to
intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government
by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass
destruction, assassination or kidnapping; and occur primarily within the territorial
jurisdiction (FBI). Although the Taliban has committed terrorist acts outside of their
territory, the majority of their attacks are on either their own soil or against their own

Introduction:
Following the Boston Tea Party 2 years earlier, the British formed a blockade of the
Boston harbor, destroying the city s thriving trade based economy. As a result of this
blockade, thousands of colonists were put out of work, and onto the streets, thirsty for
revenge. Also, now that Boston was functionally under British occupation, these
angry colonists frequently met British soldiers on the street which never went well

people who had never cared much for politics were caught in the conflict and forced

В· The British landed near Dorchester Heights and will likely march around Boston
in an attempt to outflank the colonists.
Significance of Boston and Breed s Hill:
1. Propaganda and Public Opinion: The Continental Congress sought to use a victory
at Boston to continue the momentum they had gained from the battles of Lexington
and Concord and generate more support for the rebel cause.
2. Military: The colonists could use the upcoming conflict to demonstrate the
strength of the colonial army, and that they have a real chance of winning this war.
Furthermore, Both Bunker and Breed s Hill as well as Dorchester Heights are
strategic positions, crucial to the defense of Boston. 3. Political: Support for the
suppression of the Rebels is at an all time low in the British parliament, and thus a
victory for the colonists could widen the conflict between the Tories and the Whigs.
However, despite parliament s objections, King George is still firmly in favor of the
war. Also, success in this battle could win foreign support for the war from enemies
of Britain such as France and
