The Significance Of A Rose In The War Of The Roses
Q: Who was in the war and why was it started?
A: The war of the roses was fought between the House of York and the House of Lancaster. These two
houses were royal family descending from the head family of England. When king Henry the 6th
suddenly fell ill to his first of many insanity spells Richard from the House of York believed that he
had the right to temporarily take over since he was the great grand son of king Edward the third.
Except Queen Margaret had already given birth to the kings first son, his name was Edward of
Lancaster. This made Richards claim to the throne a lot weaker since Edward was a direct descendant
of the current king. The york s eventually marched against Henry and took him hostage Queen and his
son to go into exile. The queen worked to rescue her husband and restore her sons place as the rightful
king of England (Wars of the Roses British History).
2. Q: What is the significance of a rose in this war and why is it called war of the roses?
A: The significance of a rose in this was was that it was one of many symbols used by each house.
Although this wasn t there only symbol the York s had a white rose as one of there symbols. The
Lancaster s adopted the red rose as a symbol in the 1480 s, this was more towards the end of the war
so there s no real significance of a rose in this war. The war was actually called the cousins war until
the 19th century when it was changed to the war of the roses (Andrews).

How Shakespeare Portrays the Character of the King in...
How Shakespeare Portrays the Character of the King in William Shakespeare s Henry V By writing
this play, Shakespeare was hoping to inspire the people of England because at that time there was a
possible threat of war from Spain or Ireland. He was trying to create the feeling of patriotism so
writing about Henry was a good idea because he was the epitome of a brave, courageous king. He was
able to inspire his men to great victories such as the Battle of Agincourt, where the English won
against the odds. Many of the English were tired, fatigued before the battle and they were up against
the best French knights. This play was made into a film during the Second World War to inspire the

He says that Henry controls them like a man controlling his hound. Shakespeare continues this further
by saying that they crouch at his side waiting for his command. Henry knows what his actions will
bring. It suggests that Henry has the power to control the effects of war. At this time the Church was in
some of trouble. Canterbury tells Ely about a bill, which could take land away from the church. Henry
is now a true man of the Church and is likely to support the Church. But even so the cunning Bishop
of Canterbury has a plan that will divert his mind from the bill, and that is Henry s possible claims to
land in France. He says to Ely For I have made an offer to his majesty . If there is a war to get the land
the Church will pay some money for the campaign. Also in the conversation between the bishops, it
brings you up to date with what is currently happening. Henry had spent his youth (known as Prince
Hal) mixing with bad company, filling up his time with riots, banquets, sports and did not behave like
a prince or a possible future king. He was sociable who loved to go to public places, in particular
taverns. Canterbury talks about Henry as if he were a strawberry that grows underneath the nettle . By
this he means that under the influence of his one time friends Henry was behaving like a common
person. But now under eye of the lords he was

The Healthful Benefits of Gratitude Essay example
Gratitude has become defined as deeply appreciative attitude for kindnesses or benefits acquired.
Several parts of gratitude have been identified. First, a person experiences a warm sense of
appreciation toward an individual who performs a generous or desired kind act. Second, appreciation
and kindness are expressed toward the person who completed the desired act. Finally, the person to
whom appreciation is expressed, sensing the goodwill, is inclined to act positively and/or
appreciatively toward the individual expressing gratitude. Gratitude is often interactive and also seems
to have the capacity to enhance the sense of well being and goodwill among individuals and groups
throughout an institution. Grateful individuals show higher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

handwritten autobiographies of 180 Catholic nuns (at the average age of 22) and the risk of death later
through life (ages 75 to 95). Having a grateful attitude is a lot more than just saying thank you on
occasion. Grateful people show far more intensity around some positive event than do less
appreciative folks. Over time, individuals with a higher outlook for gratitude oftener express grateful
behavior than individuals inclined to be less thankful. Grateful people have a broader span of life
events, or more life circumstances, for which they are thankful, such as spouse and children, job,
health, and even life itself. Dr. Robert Emmons on the University of California at Davis has been
studying gratitude for nearly ten years and is considered by many to be this world s leading authority

involving thousands of people conducted by several unique researchers around the world. One of the
things these reports show is that practicing gratitude can increase happiness levels as a result of

To Kill A Mockingbird Symbolism Essay
In Harper Lee s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, the fire in chapter 8 symbolizes a form of prejudice as it
burns down the snowman. A lot of the symbolism in this book stems from the prejudice taking place
against the black population in Indiana. Some of this is issued when it snows for the first time since
1885. The children make a snowman out of leftover snow and some dirt. This represents the teamwork
between the Finch family and the black community. The snow brings out the innocence of children.
During chapter 8 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Maycomb has had the coldest winter since 1885. Since it
hasn t snowed in over 45 years, people all around are confused and excited. Scout and Jem decide to

Scout and Jem know that it isn t right what happened to Tom, and it shows how innocent the two are
and how they couldn t do anything to stop it, just like the house fire.
The fire burning down the snow represents the rare occurrences that are going on in Maycomb during
this year. One of the major events is the snow that hasn t been seen since 1885, which astonishes all of
Maycomb, especially Scout and Jem. On page 86, Scout says, Next morning I awoke, looked out the
window and nearly died of fright. My screams brought Atticus from his bathroom half shaven. With
the snow appearing in the town, temperatures drop to an all time low, with everyone on the block
leaving their fireplaces open to warm their house. The fireplace catches on fire in Miss Maudie s
house, starting the fire. The fire eventually spread to different houses, lighting up the whole street. Fire
trucks came in from different towns, because of the intensity. People from the neighborhood came in
to get all of the furniture out. The children marvel at the glowing flames. They realize that this doesn t
happen very often. When do house fires occur during the winter? Another rare thing to happen is the
trial lasting so long. During this time, almost every case involving a black person would result in them
being guilty, whether they really were innocent or not. The prejudice was so severe that when the trial

The Decline In Teen Pregnancy Rates Over the last few decades the rates in teen pregnancy have been
a debate; did they rise over the past few years or did they actually decline? Contrary to some doctors
and politicians the numbers associated with teen pregnancy have decline over the last couple of years.
Although there are still people out there who believe this to be an issue it s made more of an issue than
it actually is. The ads and commercials are set out to scare teen agers into believing that were at an all
time high for this issue, but realistically its actually the exact opposite. Teen pregnancy rates haven t
dropped on there over the course of the years. There are a few major factors that have contributed a
great deal to this change. Those changes include but are not limited to: more resources being available
to these teenagers to prevent themselves from becoming pregnant, society is more open to talking
about this issue as well as the religion and culture change aspect of families today. Despite the beliefs
of others, teen pregnancy rates are at an all time low for the first time in decades. In fact there are a
few things that impacted the decline in teen pregnancy, one of which was the society has opened up to
this topic of conversation. It s not something that s kept behind closed door like it use to be. Talking
about sexual education in local school systems was a big impact on declining

Essay On Getting Organized For Divorce
Getting Organized for Divorce
A divorce is an emotional, stressful, and exhausting time in a couple s life. The dissolution of a
marriage, when paired with attempting to understand the legal process of a divorce, is overwhelming
and confusing for most individuals. Although this is a difficult time, each party must try to set
emotions aside and prepare for each phase of the divorce process.
In any divorce, there are a number of issues that must be resolved. Property must be divided, and
custody and visitation with the couple s children must be arranged. Will alimony be paid? Will the
divorce proceed on a fault based ground, or is one spouse accusing the other of causing the divorce?
Each party must consider the claims and defenses in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, many individuals become blinded by their emotions, and make irrational decisions
during this time that damage their case. If you are going through a divorce, make sure to follow these
tips.
Listen to your divorce attorney. Your attorney s job is to offer objective, rational advice throughout the
case. If your attorney says that certain actions should or should not be taken, follow that advice.
Do not play games. When your spouse s attorney asks for certain documents during the case, or seeks
certain information, do not pretend that you do not have it or cannot get it. Such behavior is not
tolerated well by judges.
Remain honest throughout the divorce process. You may be held in contempt of court or be ordered to
pay your spouse s attorneys fees if you are caught lying during sworn testimony or in notarized
statements.
You must be open with your attorney. If you made mistakes during the marriage, own up to them so
that your attorney may prepare accordingly. Your attorney does not want to find out that you had an
affair during a court proceeding.
Similarly, stay in touch with your attorney and keep your attorney informed as to issues you and your
spouse discuss so that your attorney may take appropriate action when

In relation to course content, the literature on sensory changes states that sight has the greatest effect
on a persons ability to function in later life (Novak, Campbell, and Northcott, 2013, p. 97). I find that
this definition promotes an aggressive tone in relation to my experience. As I am sure it does have an
effect on many more things in Helens life, her active wellbeing shows that it has not stopped her from
functioning. Although she proved to show that assistance was needed to help with the game, she was
still a functioning individual, especially since she was able to figure out the area where the letter was

memory can be defined as a memory of past events that are acquired from specific situations (Novak,
et al, 2013). The reason I argue that Helen has strong episodic memory is because of her past interest
in Bingo. She was able to bring her interest forward to assist her in the particular situation. This
situation and the content provided has helped change my assumptions about sensory changes in old
age. Originally before taking this course, I would have agreed with the idea that losing eyesight has
the greatest effect on a persons ability to function in later life (Novak, et al, 2013, p. 97). To many
outsiders, it does seem like a sense that would be hard to go without. After my

They were driving to Mexico in the morning, and while I was in Toronto I was to stay in their

When a young doctor advises immediate surgery for a defective heart valve, the father resists,
especially when an older doctor says that rest and medication might take care of the situation. Without
surgery, he would die shortly, so in the end, he decides to have the operation despite the risks. So what
emerges during the story, from the dialogues between Janet and her father, a brief excursion into the
past is a portrait of her father. He is a working class man, who cares for his daughter and other family
members, but is unable to express his love and constantly comes across, instead, as somewhat critical.
As he prepares psychologically for death, he briefly toys with the idea of the existence of the soul and
the afterlife but rejects that possibility. In calm, he informs his daughter, Janet, about details
concerning his house.
Moreover, in both stories, the characters commit some mistakes in their lives. In How I Met My

mistakes that she had done when she was 15 years old. When Edie works in Peebles family, she seems

Petruchio Language Analysis
In addition to her growing amiableness, Kate also displays her love for Petruchio through her choice
of words when interacting with or mentioning the man. When first meeting him, Kate does nothing
except spewing torrents of vile insults. An example of such ugly language can be seen when Kate
attempts to convince Baptista to stop Petruchio s wooing, describing him as ...one half lunatic, A
madcap ruffian and a swearing jack, That thinks with oaths to face the matter out. (Shakespeare 2.1.
302 306). Here, Kate s colorful insults clearly demonstrate her disliking of Petruchio. Through her
comically exaggerated metaphors, she describes him as a madman, a reckless savage, and a swearing

After enduring the absurd showdown that her now husband Petruchio presented in his house, slight
changes in Kate s use of language indicate her growing affection for the man. Such a case can be seen
during their conversation involving the time when they arrive at Bianca s wedding. Petruchio wrongly
states the time of their arrival, and Kate counters with I dare assure you, sir, tis almost two, And twill
be supper time ere you come there. (Shakespeare 4.3. 196 197). Kate s words here mark a point of
transition in her feelings for Petruchio. Although she is still arguing, her words of choice are much
more mellow than previous times, turning the statement into almost a gentle reminder rather than
argument. Furthermore, Kate respectfully addresses Petruchio as sir , providing great contrast to the
vulgar and derogatory terms she called him earlier in the play. Such progression in her use of language
clearly demonstrate her growing feelings for Petruchio, now using much more gentle and polite
language when interacting with the man. During the final stages of the play, Kate s words become
even more affectionate, openly displaying her

NHS Core Values
This assignment will discuss the core values that underpin social and health service delivery and will
compare the current health service provision with health care services at the inception of the NHS.
The NHS has seven core values that aim to ensure that quality care is delivered to everyone regardless
of their gender, religion, race, age, wealth or sexual orientation. These values have been developed by
the general public, patients and staff, with local authorities having to develop and adapt these to
provide personalised care. These values not only underpin the social and health delivery service, but
also influence the legislation regarding care. For example the Care Act 2014 looks at integrating care,

This has not changed in the current NHS, albeit more values have been added to improve service
delivery. The NHS remains free with the exception of some charges, such as prescriptions, optical and
dental services. It covers everything from antenatal screening and routine treatments for long term
conditions, to transplants, emergency treatment and end of life care.
The National Health Service (NHS) was planned as a three tier structure. With the Minister of Health
at the top and below were the three tiers designed to interact with each other to suit the needs of the
patient. These tiers were voluntary and municipal hospitals supervised by Regional hospital boards,
family doctors, dentists, opticians and pharmacists who were self employed professionals contracted

community clinics that provided services such as immunisations, maternity care and school medical

Appraising an Interpretive Phenomenological Research Study Shannia Warkentin Red Deer College
Appraising an Interpretive Phenomenological Research Study Problem Statement In the qualitative
article by Dykes, Slade, and Haywood, the phenomenon of interest is clearly identified as long term
implications of termination of pregnancy (TOP) and is promptly introduced in the abstract. The
authors state that TOP is a common procedure in the United Kingdom (UK) and implies importance to
the nursing profession due to the prevalence of this procedure as well as confusion demonstrated by
recognized health care organizations on how TOPs affect women. Based on psychological impacts
discussed, this topic is important in order for nurses to understand the vulnerability of women to
negative TOP associated thoughts and to improve lifelong accessibility to post TOP counselling. The
twofold aim of the study is presented as exploration of the long term experiences of perimenopausal
women who had a TOP and their perceptions of connections or lack thereof between TOP and
menopausal experiences. The qualitative approach is appropriate for investigating the long term
implications of TOP. This is because the stated aim regarding emotional effects on women fits with the
naturalistic emphasis on understanding human experiences. The researcher also identifies the chosen
approach allows exploration of the complexity of emotional experiences with TOP and therefore will
support a

Stamp Act Justified
Just the other day a fellow colonist asked me if I thought the Stamp Act was justified. Not only do I
not find the Stamp Act justified, I find it absurd! Paying a tax on newspapers, legal documents,
licenses, and even playing cards is something that would only come straight from England! Prime
Minister George Grenville was wrong about the Sugar Act and he is wrong about the Stamp Act too.
While I understand that our sweet Jesus said ...Give back to Caesar what is Caesar s and to God what
is God s, in Mark 12:17, (Life Application Study Bible 2007) I think us colonist are giving our fair
share to Caesar, or in our case England. The Stamp Act is a way to make the colonists pay part of the

The next part of the act is looking at the definition of category 1 and category 2 responders. Every
responder has an emergency planning officer. Their main role is to make sure they have good
communication with the other responders and that they stay in accordance of the act. Category 1
responders are core responders or blue light responders. There are 9 different responders for example
some of the responders in category 1 are: fire service, police service and the NHS primary care trust.
These will normally be the first ones to respond to an incident they get it under control and evaluate if
any category 2 responders are needed and if so which ones. Category 2 responders are key and work

Integrity In The Alchemist
Radio Host: Hello and welcome. I m your host Sara Clare, and this is Modern Literature Review on
BBC 85.4. Our topic for discussion this week is The Theme of Integrity. Integrity is an admirable
quality for a person to have. It encompasses many things, but at its core, honesty and the soundness of
moral character. In literature it is a recurring pattern that the most outstanding characters are ones with
enduring integrity. The novel featured has made a unique mark on modern literature. Its author,
through his globally renowned allegorical style, has amassed an international following, resulting in
this novel s translation into 67 different languages. By now many of you may have guessed, it s Paulo

He depicts dreams as something everyone is entitled to, and can accomplish with determination,
whereas reality is not so ideal. Radio Host: And sadly so. Now what about the title, the Alchemist , do
you think it was titled to represent the character s importance or does it have a symbolic meaning?
Speaker: I personal don t think the Alchemist was titled solely because of the character. The Alchemist
is an ancillary annselary character in the book, but the emphasis of the title is the symbolic meaning of
alchemy transforming one element to another of more value. It represents the process of purifying one
s character, to eliminate the bad, leaving the final result of a person with integrity. Radio Host:
Integrity really is a prominent quality in many characters in the novel. It s what makes Santiago such
an intriguing character, and you witness his development as the book progresses. Did he waver in his
integrity at any point? Speaker: Generally, any good character with depth in personality will face some
sort of opposition that leaves them a bit dumbfounded causing them to doubt their instinct. I d say the
first major conflict that Santiago faced was the incident where he misplaced trust and was robbed of
all his gold. At this point he gave up hope, and took on the notion that his dreams were distant and
unachievable. Even after he was able to continue his quest, the fear of failure made him hesitant.
Throughout his journey complacency is Santiago s

Windows Wooden Frames
Replacing the home windows is a big decision that you make in your life. When your windows
become old, you need to consider replacing them to get several benefits. Today we will be discussing
about how to choose the best replacement windows that suits you. Which type of material you need?
Which type of frame is best? And so on. First of all it is important to find that why do you want new
windows? Are the new windows going to enhance the appearance of your house? Do you want new
windows to improve energy efficiency of your home? Or maybe you are looking for the windows that
serve both purposes? Once all these questions are clear, it will be really easy for you to buy the best

Additionally, they cost high when you buy them. I suggest you to search on the web to get the
maximum discount on replacement windows if you want wooden frame. On the other hand, aluminum
frames are more durable than wood but the problem with these frames is that they offer less insulation
as compared to other materials. So if you choose aluminum frames, you might need to add thermal
breaks to increase insulation. It s better if you consult with your contractor first. Vinyl frames offers
great insulation among all when you compare replacement windows and it is the best solution but they
incur more cost upfront. But you need to keep in the mind that they recover the cost in short life span.
Low cost replacement windows are also available in the market these days. Selection of Panes You
may go with one, two or three panes in your windows. The number of panes impacts on insulation. If
you want great insulation, you should go for double or triple pane windows. But they incur more cost
as compared to single pane windows. So it is recommended that first you set your budget and then
select replacement windows with appropriate number of panes. And in the end, I would like to suggest
you all that whatever replacement windows you install do not forget to keep them clean and
maintained to get the maximum out of

The Convergence Of Methods Of Storing Files
Americans today have seen the progression from old media to new media; majority, experiencing for
themselves the transition from pagers to cell phones, cassettes to iPods, or paper maps to GPS devices.
According to Henry Jenkins, who studies media convergence, this Convergence [where old and new
media collide] represents a cultural shift as consumers are encouraged to seek out new information
and make connections among dispersed media content (Jenkins 457). It is through the help of
convergence that old media has developed into the new media Americans see today. The convergence
of methods of storing files is an example of this. Storing files online, is taking the old media, a USB
Flash Drive, and converging it into a new digital ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dropbox is a cloud storage service; a business that overlooks a users data and makes that data
accessible online. Because Dropbox has introduced people to the idea of accessing wireless data, this
reveals how this type of new media has changed the way that content is produced, distributed, and
consumed. Although the use of either a USB Flash Drive (old media) or Dropbox (new media)
maintains the same objective, that is, to provide people with alternate methods of storing data,
Dropbox is becoming a standard way of accessing data with the use of the internet as a platform. This
in turn, benefits Dropbox users somewhat.
One benefit of transitioning from a USB Flash Drive to Dropbox is that Dropbox allows easy access to
documents. Dropping files into Dropbox essentially stores these files on the online cloud, where users
can access their files anywhere and at any time as long as users have access to internet connection.
There are three methods in which Dropbox users can easily access their documents. The first is
through the Dropbox website. Users could simply sign in and upload a document they would like to
save or download an already saved file, make revisions to it, and upload the revised document.
Another way Dropbox allows easy access to documents is by linking a users Dropbox account to their

The Genius by Frank O’Connor Essay
The Genius by Frank O Connor
The boy s personality and his intelligence are swiftly established in the opening paragraph. His mother
is presented as being a strong influence on him and appears as a kind of ally against the rough children
savages as she describes them that live and play in the area. It is clear that she encourages him to
regard himself as
different and separate from them, but it is equally obvious that he is not anxious to associate with them
anyway. He describes himself as
a cissy by conviction and says that he regarded the idea of fighting as both unattractive and dangerous

Although the story is supposedly written from the point of view of the boy himself, the tongue in
cheek humour is extremely adult. The adult writer describes how the boy s desire to become an
explorer is expressed through his journeys that take him a whole mile from his home, the findings of
which are recorded in a book called by the very grand title of The Voyages of Johnson Martin !
Similarly, the adult writer communicates much more sympathy with the long suffering father who
stares moodily at the son whose behaviour and whose interests he does not understand than he does
with the little boy who takes himself so very seriously and is determined to be a proper genius . In
fact, the writer gently mocks the boy s very elevated opinion of himself by repeatedly referring to him
as a genius . Thus, if the story is autobiographical, he is laughing at the serious and pretentious child
he used to be.
The incident of the lame leg is a particularly interesting one because the writer uses it as a means of
presenting the relationships that exist between the boy and both his mother and his father. The
Greek word Oedipus means swollen foot and, in Greek mythology,
Oedipus was a Greek prince who married his mother and murdered his father. The strong attachment
of a son to his mother combined with unconscious feelings of

The Effects Of Global Warming On Health, Spatial...
Reptilian populations are under constant scrutiny from the environment. The reptilian populations rely
on close to equal sex ratios for their species to thrive. With the changing climate more and more
reptiles are at risk. This is because global warming may influence health, spatial distribution, growth,
and reproductive output (Simoncini 2014). Along with that, the change in temperature will affect the
incubation temperature, embryonic development, sex ratios, and hatchling success (Simoncini 2014).
Not only that, but global change may result in a stronger sex ratio bias, which could lead to extinction
of TSD reptiles (Hulin et al 2009). An all male or all female biased population adds more stress on a
population to survive. Scientists are concerned populations will dwindle or possibly become extinct if
reptilian species cannot adapt to climate change. Global warming will result in increased atmospheric
temperature in a short time scale and may modify several life history traits in populations (Hulin et al
2009). Reptilian species may not have the time to physically adapt to the environmental changes.
Species could overcome climate change by modification of nesting phenology or behavior (Hulin et al
2009). Some temperature dependent sex determined species may be able to compensate by nesting in
cooler areas (Refsnider 2012). Not only will temperature change affect sex ratios, but it can alter
offspring phenotypes and performance. A study was conducted to observe the effect

Planned Behavior
The Theory of Planned Behavior
The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) predicts an individual s intention to engage in a behavior at a
particular time and place ( Summary of theory of planned behavior. Abstract, 2016). It theorizes that
individual behavioral conduct is driven by behavior intentions, where conduct intentions are function
of three determinants: an individual mentality toward behavioral conduct, subjective standards, and
perceived behavioral control ( Summary of theory of planned behavior. Abstract, 2016).
Icek Ajzen Theory of Planned Behavior was proposed in 1985 through his article, From Intentions to

The theory consolidates some of the focal concepts in the social and behavior sciences, and it
characterizes these ideas in a way that grants prediction and comprehension of specific behaviors in
specified contexts (Ajzen, 1991). Demeanors toward the conduct, subjective standards with regards to
the behavior, and perceived control over the behavior are typically found to anticipate behavioral
intentions with an increase level of accuracy. Thusly, these intentions, in combination of perceived
behavioral control, can represent an instinctive proportion of discrepancy in behavior (Ajzen,

Essay on Overview of the Enron Scandal
Enron Corporation was an energy company founded in Omaha, Nebraska. The corporation chose
Houston, Texas to home its headquarters and staffed about 20,000 people. It was one of the largest
natural gas and electricity providers in the United States, and even the world. In the 1990 s, Enron was
widely considered a highly innovative, financially booming company, with shares trading at about $90
at their highest points. Little did the public know, the success of the company was a gigantic lie, and
possibly the largest example of white collar crime in the history of business. The roots of the lies start
with former Enron CEO Kenneth Lay. This man helped bring together a number of smaller energy

All these factors lead to figures that were less than what Ken Lay promised, and even started posting
losses by the second quarter of 1997. These less than stellar numbers did not discourage company
executives, and Enron continued to spend foolishly on advertisement and lobbying for deregulation.
All of the prior represents the business side of the downfall of Enron. That being said, businesses fail
all of the time. The reason why Enron Corporation and its executives will always live in infamy is not
because the company failed, but how and why the company failed. How, exactly, does a company
worth about $70 million collapse in less than a month? It became clear that the company not only had
financial problems, but ethical problems that started from the top of the company and trickled down. A
key player in these problems was Jeffrey Skilling. He was a man brought to the company by Ken Lay
himself. Skilling brought his own accounting concept to the company. It was called mark to market
accounting. This concept allowed Enron to record potential profits the day a deal was signed. This
meant that the company could report whatever they thought profits from the deal were going to be and
count the number towards actual profits, even if no money actually came in. Mark to market
accounting granted Enron the power to report major profits to the public, even if they were little or
even negative. It became a major way

Prison Population Around The World
Samantha Talmo
Professor Wisz
8 August 2016
Research Paper Prison populations around the world are continuing to grow every single day. The
nation s jail population flows like a torrential river with upwards of 12 million individuals moving in
and out of institutions annually (Lyman, 167). The population is continuing to grow in jails because of
the growth in the crime itself. It is debated whether or not nonviolent criminals should be given jail
time. There are other punishments that could be given to criminals that have not created violent
crimes, for example serving community service, being on house arrest and speaking to a parole officer.
Another question that society considers is whether or not in the long run will society itself benefit
from nonviolent criminals not receiving jail time. Society would benefit if nonviolent criminals were
punished in other ways than jail time. Society would benefit since overcrowding in jails wouldn t be
an issue, tax costs would be reduced, and recidivism would decrease as a result. A big issue in prisons
are overcrowding, it was previously stated that 12 million inmates that around the world that is in

amount of people living in one prison. Jails now hold some 730,000 people in custody, more than

A Brief Note On Sectionalism And The American Civil War
Sectionalism, in it s earliest American state was found in the early 1800 s. Tensions were high during
this time, with Slavery becoming a much more Sectional issue. The South claimed Slavery a
Necessary Evil, and that without it, the South s economy would collapse. Many in the South believed
it was a positive thing, providing slaves with shelter, food, and many cases, religion. On the opposite
side, many northerners called for Abolition, or, the end of slavery ( Course Notes, Sectionalism and
Slavery ). This ongoing conflict caused further splitting of the Union, with each side s ideals being
complete 180° of each others . This political split lay almost exactly on the nation s regional line
splitting the north and south, beginning to cut the once united nation into said sections. This small
crack would be a tiny spark that light the tinder of one of the bloodiest wars the United States had ever
participated in, the American Civil War. Where brother killed brother, and children as young as middle
schoolers would be admitted into the army to fight in some of the bloodiest, brutal battles in american
history ( Course Notes, Sectionalism and Slavery ). .Obviously, sectioning and splitting a once
strongly united country will have a huge impact upon said country. The strong controversy of Slavery,
along with several smaller conflicts at the time were wedging the crack further apart, allowing the
plague of sectionalism to expand and spread. One of these conflicts was

Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary Case Study
Only 100 miles off the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, there is a marine ecosystem teeming with life.
This ecosystem is called the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS). FGBNMS
is a coral reef that monitored and preserved by NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration. NOAA sees the FGBNMS as a valuable natural resource that we need to protect. The
intent of this memo is to identify the resources that FGBNMS provides, what policies are in place to
protect those resources, what effect these policies have had, and what actions to take from this point
forward. Fortunately, the policies regarding this natural resource are accomplishing the goal of
protecting this reef, so I do not recommend to many changes to the existing policies, except for a few
slight changes.

On the family tree, all of the boys have names stemming from the bible such as Jonah and Mark. John
Paul is the name of the last boy we see on the family tree similar to how in the Bible John is to believe
to have written the book of revelations which is the last book in the bible. Another parallel shown in
the story is when John Paul is talking about his mother he states God rested on the seventh day, their
mama declared, and she would too (151). This quote compares God s creation of everything in the six
days and his rest on the seventh to Sapphira s creation of six children and stopping after have the
seventh one. By doing so Naylor is able to communicate the power of the black woman by alluding to
her god like power.
The bill of sale for Sapphira Wade is used to contrast from the typical history of slaves by going into
depth about the characteristic of the slave. When a slave was purchased a bill of sale was created to
provide proof of ownership. Most bills of sale for slaves gave a simple name, age and appearance but
lack personality traits. For example, at the Smithsonian Museum, a bill of sale dated 1835 details the

sixteen years, yellow complexion and black eyes . The reader gets very basic knowledge about the

What does a stereotypical raven symbolize? In The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe creates a dreary mood
through the usage of subject matter, rhyme and meter, symbolism and word choice. His long lost

a long lost love subject matter in The Raven. Lenore, the main characters young beautiful wife in the
prime of her life died. The man was very sad and dreary that he lost his young Lenore. He said For the
rare and radiant maiden for whom the angels named Lenore Nameless here for evermore.(2) The main
character lost his love and a young age. The theme or subject matter is long lost love just for this
reason. One day a raven showed up at the man s house. The man is asking the raven many questions
about his wife who passed. The man is not getting the news he is looking for, he says, Quaff, oh quaff
this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore!(4) Edgar is so curious about his long lost love and

Employee Is Harmed At Work
In the event an employee is harmed at work and they meet all the requirements for workers
compensation they can get health advantages and salary for the amount of time they miss work. With a
specific end goal to get these advantages, the representative must lose their entitlement to sue their
manager for the offense of disregard. There are a wide range of arrangements, which fluctuate from
state to state. The workers that fit the bill for pay can get week after week installments as opposed to
being paid by their manager, which would go about as a type of disability insurance. In the event that
a worker needs compensation for monetary misfortune or restorative costs, it would be utilized as
medical coverage. Another structure that falls under workers compensation is life insurance, which
would be utilized if a laborer is killed during their employment.
There are three defenses for an employer by law for worker related injury. These are the fellow servant
doctrine, contributory negligence, and assumption of risk. The fellow servant doctrine is when another
employee causes the worker to be injured and this would make the employer not responsible for the
incident. The contributory negligence is when an employee does not use precautionary measures to be
careful on the job. In this instance the employer would also not be responsible for the injuries the
employee got. The last defense for an employer is the assumption of risk. This would be if the injured

However, as discussed in this study, hallmark events not always bring only positive effects. For
example, in 2010 South Africa hosted less tourists as it was predicted and faced intense public
investment, as a result there has been a consequent fall in GDP. Although, the Olympic Games in
London in 2012 had more positive impacts, such as economy growth through the job generation,
investments and additional spending by tourists (Bevan, 2014). At the moment, it seems that the FIFA
World Cup did not boost Brazilian economy, however, it raised an awareness about the difficulties that
Brazil is facing, such as human trafficking and increasing level of poverty. It can be stated that several

the FIFA World Cup did not improve ecological situation of Brazil, did not help the underclass to deal

that there is a bigger need in improving education system, health care and living conditions of society
in general rather than in a new stadium or a hotel. The enormous amount of money that has been spent

In one particular scene Precious is looking in the mirror while fixing her hair and what she sees

How Shakespeare Portrays the Character of the King in William Shakespeare s Henry V By writing this play, Shakespeare was hoping to inspire the people of England because at that time there was a possible threat of war from Spain or Ireland. He was trying to create the feeling of patriotism so writing about Henry was a good idea because he was the epitome of a brave, courageous king. He was able to inspire his men to great victories such as the Battle of Agincourt, where the English won against the odds. Many of the English were tired, fatigued before the battle and they were up against the best French knights. This play was made into a film during the Second World War to inspire the British ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says that Henry controls them like a man controlling his hound. Shakespeare continues this further by saying that they crouch at his side waiting for his command. Henry knows what his actions will bring. It suggests that Henry has the power to control the effects of war. At this time the Church was in some of trouble. Canterbury tells Ely about a bill, which could take land away from the church. Henry is now a true man of the Church and is likely to support the Church. But even so the cunning Bishop of Canterbury has a plan that will divert his mind from the bill, and that is Henry s possible claims to land in France. The Convergence Of Methods Of Storing Files Americans today have seen the progression from old media to new media; majority, experiencing for themselves the transition from pagers to cell phones, cassettes to iPods, or paper maps to GPS devices. According to Henry Jenkins, who studies media convergence, this Convergence [where old and new media collide] represents a cultural shift as consumers are encouraged to seek out new information and make connections among dispersed media content (Jenkins 457). Although the use of either a USB Flash Drive (old media) or Dropbox (new media) maintains the same objective, that is, to provide people with alternate methods of storing data, Dropbox is becoming a standard way of accessing data with the use of the internet as a platform. Dropping files into Dropbox essentially stores these files on the online cloud, where users can access their files anywhere and at any time as long as users have access to internet connection. There are three methods in which Dropbox users can easily access their documents. The first is through the Dropbox website. His mother is presented as being a strong influence on him and appears as a kind of ally against the rough children savages as she describes them that live and play in the area. It is clear that she encourages him to regard himself as different and separate from them, but it is equally obvious that he is not anxious to associate with them anyway. Although the story is supposedly written from the point of view of the boy himself, the tongue in cheek humour is extremely adult. The adult writer describes how the boy s desire to become an explorer is expressed through his journeys that take him a whole mile from his home, the findings of which are recorded in a book called by the very grand title of The Voyages of Johnson Martin ! Similarly, the adult writer communicates much more sympathy with the long suffering father who stares moodily at the son whose behaviour and whose interests he does not understand than he does with the little boy who takes himself so very seriously and is determined to be a proper genius . In fact, the writer gently mocks the boy s very elevated opinion of himself by repeatedly referring to him as a genius . Thus, if the story is autobiographical, he is laughing at the serious and pretentious child he used to be. The incident of the lame leg is a particularly interesting one because the writer uses it as a means of presenting the relationships that exist between the boy and both his mother and his father. The Greek word Oedipus means swollen foot and, in Greek mythology, Oedipus was a Greek prince who married his mother and murdered his father. • 28. The Effects Of Global Warming On Health, Spatial... Reptilian populations are under constant scrutiny from the environment. The reptilian populations rely on close to equal sex ratios for their species to thrive. With the changing climate more and more reptiles are at risk. This is because global warming may influence health, spatial distribution, growth, and reproductive output (Simoncini 2014). Along with that, the change in temperature will affect the incubation temperature, embryonic development, sex ratios, and hatchling success (Simoncini 2014). Not only that, but global change may result in a stronger sex ratio bias, which could lead to extinction of TSD reptiles (Hulin et al 2009). An all male or all female biased population adds more stress on a population to survive. Scientists are concerned populations will dwindle or possibly become extinct if reptilian species cannot adapt to climate change. Global warming will result in increased atmospheric temperature in a short time scale and may modify several life history traits in populations (Hulin et al 2009). Reptilian species may not have the time to physically adapt to the environmental changes. Species could overcome climate change by modification of nesting phenology or behavior (Hulin et al 2009). Some temperature dependent sex determined species may be able to compensate by nesting in cooler areas (Refsnider 2012). Not only will temperature change affect sex ratios, but it can alter offspring phenotypes and performance. A study was conducted to observe the effect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the 1990 s, Enron was widely considered a highly innovative, financially booming company, with shares trading at about $90 at their highest points. Little did the public know, the success of the company was a gigantic lie, and possibly the largest example of white collar crime in the history of business. The reason why Enron Corporation and its executives will always live in infamy is not because the company failed, but how and why the company failed. How, exactly, does a company worth about $70 million collapse in less than a month? This meant that the company could report whatever they thought profits from the deal were going to be and count the number towards actual profits, even if no money actually came in. The nation s jail population flows like a torrential river with upwards of 12 million individuals moving in and out of institutions annually (Lyman, 167). The population is continuing to grow in jails because of the growth in the crime itself. It is debated whether or not nonviolent criminals should be given jail time. There are other punishments that could be given to criminals that have not created violent crimes, for example serving community service, being on house arrest and speaking to a parole officer. Another question that society considers is whether or not in the long run will society itself benefit from nonviolent criminals not receiving jail time. Society would benefit if nonviolent criminals were punished in other ways than jail time. Society would benefit since overcrowding in jails wouldn t be an issue, tax costs would be reduced, and recidivism would decrease as a result. A big issue in prisons are overcrowding, it was previously stated that 12 million inmates that around the world that is in prison. Another parallel shown in the story is when John Paul is talking about his mother he states God rested on the seventh day, their mama declared, and she would too (151).
