Mass culture
"Set of ideas and values that develop from a
common exposure to the same media, news
sources, music, and art. Mass culture is broadcast
or otherwise distributed to individuals instead of
arising from their day-to-day interactions with
each other. Thus, mass culture generally lacks the
unique content of local communities and regional
cultures.
With the growth of the Internet since the 1990s,
many distinctions between mass media and
folklore have become blurred."
Activity time!
With all being said and done a Katy Perry's music video will be shown, while you watch it think of the
concept of Mass culture.
Cultural appropriation
The act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing
that you understand or respect this culture:
Some see the use of African music as cultural appropriation.
Final Activity
After watching Katy Perry’s videos and discussing about cultural appropriation.
In pairs you’ll do a debate on the topics
● Cultural appropriation on the music industry
● The activists who fight against the massification of the “unpopular” cultures
● Prejudice suffered by some cultures
● How do you appreciate a culture you are not part of? And can you?
