Synthetic Cubism was the second phase of Cubism and used more color, shapes, textures, and materials beyond paint. It incorporated collage techniques by including real objects in paintings. Key characteristics included the use of mixed media, collage, and flat surfaces. Significant figures were Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris. Picasso's Bottle of Vieux Marc, Guitar and Newspaper from 1913 used cut paper collage to depict objects on a table. Gris' Portrait of Pablo Picasso from 1912 used shapes and colors to depict Picasso, while The Breakfast from 1914 incorporated various paper cuttings to represent a breakfast table from different angles.
