This document outlines a community service initiative project for architecture students. It proposes that students work in groups to design and implement projects that enhance local communities in areas of charitable homes, community centers, street spaces, or environment. Examples of project types are given. Students will receive guidance from a workshop on charity work. They will conduct research, propose and finalize designs, implement activities, and evaluate their projects. Assessment will be based on architectural values, sustainability, community engagement, and professional project handling demonstrated through e-journals, documentation of activities, and a final presentation video.

This is the presentation I gave to the executives on what I accomplished during my summer as an intern with InfoPrint Solutions Company. Though there were so many small pieces I worked on, my focus for the presentation was some of the larger components of my internship.

2. PROPOSAL FOR SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, BUILDING AND DESIGN (SABD)
COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE (CSI)
MARCH 2017 SEMESTER
INTRODUCTION
Community Service Initiative module (CSI) is a compulsory MPU4 subject, in which students are required to pass in
order to graduate. In School of Architecture, Building and Design, CSI will continue the traditional teaching and
learning method in Architectures, that is learning by integrating theories with design practice. Students are required to
incorporate the theory they have learned at school into real life environment and problems. The intention is to reveal
the students to the real community and work together as a team for architectural, culture and environmental
enhancing activities in the communities of different social economic status and social groups.
In this semester, a workshop will be conducted to give student a better insight on how to conduct a more
organized/result-driven charity activity. Junior Chamber International, Lead Tropicana Chapter, a non-government
organization will be engaged to share their experience in charity work. They will be sharing “JCI Active Citizen
Framework” as a step-by-step guideline to formulate, plan and evaluate a community work. The workshop will be
held on 8th April 2017. Student attendance is compulsory.
Students in a group of maximum 8 can choose to participate in any of the following categories.

Organizations, which survive through public donation, are
usually in very poor stages. Students are to use their
knowledge in architectural space design to improve state of
living of the occupants.
Community Center (CC), examples :-
Local Community Center
Orang Asli Community Center
Surau / Mosque
A number of community center are left with no community
activities; and some are even totally abandoned. Students are
to use their knowledge in architectural space design to restore
or reactivate the space.
Street Community (SS), examples :-
Dormant Space in a community
Street/Space with high criminal rate
Student will be looking at the possibility of enhancing urban
community experiences. Propose solution to address street
problems such as high criminal rate, lost culture and values,
dormant or etc.
Environment Enhancing , E2 Project (E2)
Tentatively Metro Prima, Kepong
E2 Project is collaborative community service project run by JCI
and OCBC bank. This collaboration intends to materialize
students’ proposal that will benefit the local community.
Students are to propose any architectural related proposal at
the area proposed by OCBC Bank (refer to power point slides
from OCBC)
3. On top of collaboration with OCBC and JCI, SABD is pleased to continue collaboration with VERITAS Architects.
VERITAS will continue to support SABD in term of cash prize and internship opportunities for the students. Towards
the end of the semester, an exhibition will be held to show case students’ proposal as well as prize giving ceremony.
Assessment criteria of the proposal
1. Architectural Values
o Students’ proposal has to be architecture related. Non-architectural related charity activity such as
organizing a drawing competition for orphanage, cleaning dog shelter or distribute food to
homeless people will receive minimum grade.
2. Sustainability / self-sustaining
o The design should be sustainable for a long period (>6 months). It shall not be a one time off
activity nor it will deteriorate when there is no caretaker.
3. Community Engagement / User satisfaction survey / interview
o Students are required to conduct a need analysis to investigate the community’s need. They are to
return to the site for satisfaction survey once their proposal have been finalized to analyse if their
proposal suits the local community’s need.
4. Innovation / Creativity & Professionalism of project handling
Deliverables
1. Individual E-journal (30%)
- Each student is to record their observation / individual contribution / reflection on TiMES. Students are
free to use images, videos or even charts to enhance their journal.
2. Activities (50%)
- All activities (survey, site visit, interview, prototype construction and etc) shall be recorded and
compiled.
3. Presentation (20%)
- Final presentation shall be in form of video. No ORAL presentation.
