1.0 INTRODUCTION
In this project, the aim is to integrate the lighting analysis and design into our community library
which is located at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR), Kuala Lumpur. The selected site faces the
east side where daylighting is not much of an issue to light up a space in the library which has the
ability to utilize natural lighting as much as possible when needed as natural lighting always
provides a comfort in spatial aspects. However also, the integration of artificial lighting helps to
ensure the luminance level is always great for the users who use the space in the library.
The design intention of this community library is to bring the people together in making a strong
community and not forgetting to have a place for them to feel safe whenever they need a place to
be relaxed. Hence, this library is designed in that way with the design concept of integrating
important aspects which is the people, the site and also the enhancement of a didactic library.

2.0 LIGHTING CALCULATION (SPACE A)
Space A that has been chosen will be the Audio Visualisation Chamber that is located at the 3rd
floor of the community library, facing the east side of the building. The floor height of this space is
4 metres and the purpose of this space is close to the faรงade is to maximise the use of natural
daylight in providing a visual element to the building for the community and passer-by.

DF = (W/A) X (Tฮธ/1-R)
(42.5/270.276) X (0.6(70)/0.5)
= 13.2
= 13%
Given that the daylight factor is 13%, its said to be too bright for the room according to MS 1525,
hence, the amount of light that would come into the space is vastly a lot to take in. This is due to
the orientation of the building of this space where it is directly facing to the east.
The diagram above shows the lighting contour for the daylight factor. It can be said that natural
light is bale to brighten up the space fully during the day and it needs to be reduced by having
certain type of light shelves so that, it can reduce the high intensity amount of light coming into
the space. Hence, light shelves can be installed and also with the help of artificial lighting also it
can enhance the space during the night when there is 0 daylight.

Lumen Method Calculation :
Step 1 : Indicating Room Index
L= 10.6m, W= 9.879m, Hm= 2.8m ( ceiling to table)
RI = (LW)/(Hmx(L+W))
= (10.6(9.879)) / (2.8(10.6+9.879))
= 104.7174 / 57.3512
= 1.82
Referring to UF table, ceiling = 0.50, wall = 0.30, table surface = 0.10
Hence, UF value is 0.41
Step 2 : Calculating number of lights
E = 300 lux, A = 95.03, F = 1800 lux (LED Lights) , UF = 0.41, MF = 0.80
N= (ExA) / (FxUFxMF)
= (300x95.03) / (1800x0.41x0.80)
= 28509 / 590.4
= 48.2
= 48 LIGHTS.
Since, the space is bright enough during the day, the space needs half of the amount of light to be
installed because it is only used during the night.
Hence,
48/2 = 24 lights.
As the space is in a L shape layout, some can be arranged by 2 rows with 8 luminaires and 2 rows
with 4 luminaires.
Smax L1 = 10.6 โ 7.2(LED Lights) / 8 = 0.42m
Smax L2 = 7.85 โ 7.2 (LED Lights) / 8 = 0.08 = 0.1m
Smax W1 = 5.5 โ 1.2 (LED Lights) / 2 = 2.25m
Smax W2 = 4.37 โ 1.2 (LED Lights) / 2 = 1.585m

The selected space has a total daylight factor of 13% which is really high for a value. Hence, this
space will be a good space to use during daylight or the day as it does not need at artificial lighting
as it can fill up the space with daylight coming through it. But too much light also would be very
uncomfortable and so, installing light shelves are a great idea to deviate sunlight in coming in one
whole direction. As the chosen artificial lightings are the sound-light comfort LED light system,
these lights give the flexibility of usage whereby they can be used during certain activities that is
requiring these type of luminance.

3.0 ARTIFICIAL LIGHTING CALCULATION (SPACE B)
Space B is the Creche, which is a nursery for children who come to the library on a working day. It
is located at the 4th floor of the library facing the west side of the library. This space is rather lighted
up fully with artificial lighting because to emphasise on the type of user who are the children
mostly. The height of this space is 4.5 metres and it is in a L shape layout.

Lumen Method Calculations :
Step 1 : Indicating room Index
L= 10.6m, W =10.2, Hm = 3.6m
RI = (LW)/(Hmx(L+W))
= (10.6(10.2)) / (3.6(10.6+10.2))
= 108.12 / 74.88
= 1.44
Referring to UF table, ceiling = 0.50, wall = 0.30, table surface = 0.10
Hence, UF value is 0.36
Step 2 : Calculating number of lights
E = 300 lux, A = 75.95, F = 1800 lux (LED Lights) , UF = 0.36, MF = 0.80
N= (ExA) / (FxUFxMF)
= (300x75.95) / (1800x0.36x0.80)
= 22785 / 518.4
= 43.9
= 44 LIGHTS.
Since, the space is does not have any amount of natural lighting going through, these proposed
amount of artificial light will be sufficient enough to light up the crรจche properly.
Hence,
As the space is in a L shape layout, some can be arranged by 2 rows with 10 luminaires and 4 rows
with 6 luminaires.
Smax L1 = 10.6 โ 2.4 (LED Lights) / 10 = 0.82m
Smax L2 = 3.205 โ 2.4 (LED Lights) / 10 = 0.08 = 0.1m
Smax W1 = 4.259โ 2.4 (LED Lights) / 2 = 0.9m
Smax W2 = 6.37 โ 2.4 (LED Lights) / 2 = 1.9m

For this space, as a complete strategy, the type of light chosen again is also the sound-light
comfort LED Light. This is because of how the space requires the amount of light up the whole
huge space with just having these light. So this LED lights are also efficient in the quality and life-
span, as it does not require much electricity usage. The crรจche is a perfect space for this type of
lighting due to it is an enclosed space which require full light.
