The CSF is produced primarily by the choroid plexuses in the ventricles of the brain at a rate of around 500 ml per day. It functions to provide mechanical protection to the brain, maintain a stable environment, remove waste products, and may convey messages. The choroid plexus actively transports ions like sodium, chloride, and bicarbonate from blood into the CSF, with water following by osmosis. CSF circulates from the ventricles through the brain and spinal cord before being reabsorbed into the venous blood via arachnoid villi.
