one book. A group of teenagers living in San Francisco become prisoners of a terrorist attack
investigation when they are arrested and brought to an island by the Department of Homeland
Security. They are treated awfully despite not having committed a single crime. The main character,
Marcus, deems it is in his hands to take down the DHS and get revenge for what they ve done. The
Bay Bridge bombing and terrorist attack, the awful treatment of the characters by the DHS, and
Marcus good efforts to seek revenge, all have an impact on human nature. Doctorow s novel shows
how acts of conflict can expose the cruelty of human nature as they can inflict tremendous pain on the
vulnerable, but sometimes they can even cause a positive outcome. Organizing a terrorist attack
reveals one s true human nature simply by having created such a vicious and cruel conflict. Within the
beginning of the novel, the Bay Bridge in San Francisco was bombed and thousands of people got

While both the Jung Typology and the DISC s assessment varies, mostly the characteristics it read
were seemingly similar. Both tests seem to find my personality to be more introverted and cautious
than extroverted and daring. I believe that these tests are mostly accurate, but have some flaws

The DISC assessment, similar to the Jung Typology, I felt was not as accurate and I found more to
disagree with. The DISC was more in depth, I thought. The DISC said that I was less decisive,
moderately interactive, highly stable, and extremely cautious. Once again the DISC assessment also
said I would prefer a stable work environment, and I still disagree with that one.
However, I believe it was spot on when it says that I like to analyze a situation before I act on a
decision and I am normally the quiet person in a heated debate. In the interactive category, I was

Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT) in training are tasked with helping a family work through
conflict and arrive and more intimate and interdependent relationships, which can seem daunting or
maybe even terrifying. However, the interaction patterns that show up in families can find some
context and clarity for a therapist who knows systems theory. Systems theory suggests that individuals
cannot be understood in isolation from their family context because families create relational
processes and generate a sequence of interactions and behaviors in order to maintain dynamic stability
of the self regulating family system (Nichols, 2013, pp. 58 59). How does this general systems theory
help an MFT guide a family in therapy? In this paper I will take three systems theory principles and
apply them to a movie in order to demonstrate how it provides a language and context for MFTs, thus
making it an essential tool in family therapy.
I will begin with a brief synopsis of Demme s movie, Rachel Getting Married (2008), and its primary
family characters. Next I will discuss three key principles of systems theory and use the movie
characters interactions as examples for each corresponding principle. In the conclusion I will share my
learning experience in doing this assignment.
