The Impact Of The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906
The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and Recovery.
What did the people of San Francisco suffer after the earthquake of 1906? In order to answer this
question, we need to know what the San Francisco earthquake was. The San Francisco earthquake
happened in 1906 with a magnitude of 7.8 and caused a fire that burned for 7 days. This was the
biggest recorded earthquake in San Francisco. The foreshock started at 5:12am and 25 seconds
later the earthquake started that lasted 40 to 60 seconds, with most San Franciscans asleep in
rooms, they became trapped with only their hope to save them. The earthquake and fire of San
Francisco in 1906 will go down as one of the worst earthquakes in the United States history. It s
after affects can still be felt in the California area.
The San Francisco earthquake caused quite a lot of damage in the area, but what is an earthquake?
An earthquake is the movement of tectonic plates along a transform boundary and what plate is
California sitting on? The Pacific Plate which is not connected to the North American plate and the
plate boundary is a transform boundary. Earthquakes occur so often there that people say it is like
a rainstorm that is ignored. The place where the Pacific Plate is grinding along with the North
American Plate is called the San Andreas Fault. As stated before the earthquake had a magnitude
of 7.8 which caused so much destruction a fire broke out. Nobody really knows where the fire
started but it burned for 7 days and scorched over 500 city blocks leaving the once proud and
powerful city into dust. The combination of the earthquake and fire is said to have killed Over
700 deaths by the earthquake and fire is now believed to be an understatement the total loss of life
by a factor of 3 or 4. (The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.)
Even before the earthquake people saw suspicious things with animals. For example, Lisa A.
Chippendale in her book The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, quoted Sergeant Cook who stated
The horses seemed skittish, frequently neighing and nervously pulling at their reins. Many people
were asleep in the time of the shock. By the first shock some shot up and tried to get their clothes
on, but their struggle was in vain, they could

Mechanical And Chemical Digestion Of The Digestive System
Digestion is the process of breaking larger food particles into smaller particles that can pass
through the plasma membrane. The digestive system is in charge of this process. To begin, the
mouth receives food, breaking it into smaller particles by chewing, a form of mechanical digestion
with the teeth, for absorption. The tongue aids in this process of chewing and swallowing as a
muscular organ. Additionally, the salivary glands in the mouth secrete saliva to help lubricate the
food and begin chemical digestionwith its digestive enzyme, salivary amylase. Also aiding in
chemical digestion in the mouth is mucin. When in the mouth, salivary mucins functions as a
protective layer.
Once formed into a small rounded mass, called a bolus, the food passes through a sphincter, a
muscular ring that regulates the size of an opening, and enters the esophagus, a muscular tube
leading to the stomach. No additional digestion occurs here. For the food to travel, it is lubricated
with mucus and moved by peristalsis into the stomach. At the end of the esophagus, at the opening
to the stomach, is a sphincter. Once in the stomach, a J shaped organ in the upper left region of the
abdominal cavity, the food goes through additional mechanical and chemical digestion. The
churning action of the stomach muscles physically breaks down the food while the acids and
enzymes released help breakdown the nutrients. Hydrochloric acid, a strong acid, helps break down
protein and destroy foreign

The Effects Of Global Warming On The Health Of Humans And...
Global warming is one of the largest environmental problems of the time, and this naturally
occurring phenomenon intensified by pollution has become a threat to the health of humans and
wildlife, communities, and economies around the world. Normal greenhouses gases (GHGs)
present in the atmosphere include carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrous oxide. These gases
prohibit too much infrared radiation from reflecting back into space; hence, they trap this energy in
the atmosphereto create a constant temperature for Earth. Therefore, the term greenhouse describes
how these gases surround and regulate the Earth s temperature like a greenhouse or glasshouse for
plants. In addition to the natural atmospheric gases, humans have artificially created an additional
GHG composed of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which are non flammable chemicals are composed
of chlorine, fluorine, and carbon found in refrigerant and aerosol products. Humans are not only
constructing new GHGs but also dramatically increasing the amount of the natural gases such as
carbon dioxide. Combing the emissions directly from the tailpipe to the extraction and production
of fuel, the transportation sector is responsible for 30% of the United States emissions of carbon
dioxide and other global warminggases. The human population is increasing and becoming more
dependent on fossil fuels particularly for fuel, yet the burning of fossil fuels cause an increase of
two to three parts per million in carbon dioxide

Personal Narrative-Outward Bound
I stared into the dark murky lake. The black waters rippled, revealing plastic bags, soda cans, and
orange peels. The stench wafted up to my nose even when standing fifty feet above. I peered
below and shivered involuntarily due to the icy wind hitting me like a ton of bricks. Tightening
my grip on the rails, I leaned back to control my shaking. Voices surrounded me, encouraging me
to jump. But I was transfixed on what s below. Taking a deep breath, I took one step forward. It
was the second semester of sixth grade. Our teacher had decided to take our class on a camping
trip to a remote site near Tsing Yi. It was to be a fun filled three days with plenty of activities. Mr.

dirty! I can t believe I have to stay here. I hate dirty places. I want to go home. Everyone seemed

into one of the rooms at the end of the corridor. I trailed slowly behind, each step filled with
dread. I stepped into the room and saw her bouncing on the balls of her feet, admiring the sight
before her. I inspected the room with dismay. There were four single beds placed against two walls.
Irritated and frustrated, I dumped my backpack onto the ground and started to

Economic Perspective Of Climate Change

Economic perspective of Climate change Climate is an average weather condition during a region
in a given period, it will not change by one day or one night, but instead caused through over time.
From the perspective of meteorology, The climate changerefers to a specific location, time of
regional or global climate change or conversion, based on the all of the conditions associated with
the average weather characteristics, such as temperature, wind and precipitation etc. According to
the IPCC s Synthesis Report, Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have increased since the pre
industrial era, driven largely by economic and population growth, and are now higher than ever.
This has led to atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide that are
unprecedented in at least the last 800,000 years. Their effects, together with those of other
anthropogenic drivers, have been detected throughout the climate system and are extremely likely
to have been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid 20th century (Page4)
Human are the main reason to cause the climate change. While during the climate changing in
naturally, human activities have altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere, causing the
today s climate change. And this change is not only hindering the progress and development of
society but also affect human society and the survival of

The Toulmin Model Of Argument
Stephen Toulmin, one of the most significant philosophers of our generation. Mr. Toulmin
produced widespread analyses from morals, science, and ethical reasoning and established a
different method for examining arguments, which is recognized as the Toulmin model of
argumentation. Stephen Toulmin model of argumentation was not realized in Great Britain, but
when he got to America those same ideas manifested to become the Toulmin model we know today.
In the earlier stages of The Toulmin model it was used in debate manuals. The Toulmin model
analyzes the strength and weaknesses of any argumentation. The Toulmin model has advanced into
the rhetorical interpretation of literary texts. This tool is used for developing, examining, and
classifying arguments. There are six parts of the model of argumentfrom the claim, data, warrant,
backing, modality, and rebuttal. The claim is the position or claim, which is argued for the
deduction of the argument. For example a claim would be cars over 20 years old shouldn t be
allowed on the road. The data are the foundation or basis for the claim, the support. An example
of data would be older vehicles pollute the environment and are less safe than newer car models.
The warrant is also mentioned as the bridge, it is a description of why or how the data supports the
claim, the underlying assumptions that links the data to the claim. An example of warrant would
be removing the older car models from the road, and would drastically improve the

Sonny s Character In The Rocket Boys
My favorite character in Rocket Boys is Sonny s father, Homer Hickman. This may seem like an
odd choice, given that Sonny s father is not always kind to Sonny, and often hinders him. Other
times, however, he helps Sonny greatly. For example, in the beginning of the story, he pours
Sonny s chemicals down the creek and forbids Sonny from launching rockets on company
property. Afterwards, he shows Sonny an area where he is allowed to launch rockets, the place that
becomes Cape Coalwood. Everything Sonny s father does often contradicts something done or said
earlier in the book, which seems at first to be very confusing.
These actions, however, all have a simple explanation. Sonny s father has two loves in his life: his
family and his mine. Additionally,

How the Characters of Macbeth and the Duke in My Last...
I am examining the characters of the Duke and Macbeth and how they can be considered disturbed
characters. The play, Macbeth and poem, My Last Duchess both show psychological truths and
insights into the characters. While the Duke shows himself to be disturbed straight away in the
poem, Macbeth s mental deterioration takes place and develops as the play proceeds. Macbeth
written by William Shakespeare and set in 1050 contains themes of status, power and death while
My Last Duchessby Robert Browningwritten in 1842 shows how status, wealth and the marriage
market can affect a man s life.
Macbeth at first is a well respected and liked character. He shows himself to be brave and is given
the position of the Thane of Cawdor . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However as King, there is no one who has a higher status than his which then leads Macbeth to
associate with people of a lower class than the people he is obligated to. When talking to the
murderers it is pointed out that there is blood upon thy face which shows that Macbeth instigated
the murder of a friends. The two scenes symbolise how Macbeth has become infatuated with power
and is willing to do anything to keep it. This exhibits his obsessive nature.
Macbeth s use of language in Act 5, Scene 5 infers that life is pointless. He suggests that life
until we die means nothing. Creeps in this petty pace from day To the last syllable of recorded
time. During this scene he finds out Lady Macbeth died, showing the extent that he relies on his
wife. Shakespeare uses the scene to tell the audience that you can t control destiny and what
happens in life. This relates to his disturbed mind as he tried to control his destiny. An emphasis is
put on the fact the word tomorrow is repeated. It implies that Macbeth won t have a tomorrow.
Shakespeare uses language to show how much Macbeth has changed throughout the play. At first he
was a respected character and gradually becomes more disturbed. Thus scene suggests that he is
essentially lost and resigned to his fate.
The Duke however is a possessive and materialistic character. This is shown through the title My
Last Duchess . My displays how even

Nicolaus Copernicus Research Paper
Nicolaus Copernicus was an astronomer who believed the Sun was at the center of the universe
and that the Earth revolved around it. Copernicus was born on February 19th, 1473. He was the
son of
Nicolaus Copernicus who was a merchant, and Barbara Watzenrode who was the daughter of a
merchant
family. After his father died in 1483, he was taken in by his uncle. Copernicus later enrolled in the
University of Cracow and assumed an administrative position just below that of bishop. Copernicus
then
went to the University of Bologna in 1496 to study canon law. Here he lived with an astronomy
professor

The current idea that people believed in at the time was the geocentric model. The geocentric
model showed the Earth being the center of the universe and the rest of the planets revolving
around it.
This idea was introduced by Ptolemy to explain how the planets moved. However, the geocentric
model
did not follow Aristotle s requirement for the uniform circular motion of planets. Copernicus then
thought
he could follow this requirement by using a heliocentric model of the universe where the distances
of the
planets from the sun had a direct relationship to their orbit size.
His information, however, did not completely invalidate the geocentric model. The contributions
of other astronomers hundreds of years later eventually provided enough information to prove the
Fortner 2
geocentric model wrong. Galileo, by using a telescope, observed that Venus and Mercury went

Psychosocial Development Analysis
Erik Erikson is famous for his theory of psychosocial development, which emphasizes the
sociocultural development and created eight stages that children undergo psychosocial conflicts.
Children ages five to twelve go through the stage of industry vs. inferiority. The stage industry
vs. inferiority is were children develop a sense of competence at useful skills and tasks during
their middle childhood (Berk Meyers, 2015). Children during this stage experience self doubt and
their self esteem tends to be low. Fifth graders should have a rite of passage that marks an
important stage in their life, which is competency during middle childhood. The first stage that
fifth graders should overcome is separation for the week long program. The program will consist

How To Write An Essay About The Alchemist
The bestseller novel The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is known by many people for its valuable
lessons and ideas. However, I am not one of these people as I am not fond of this book.
Opinion: The Alchemist uses elements of magical fantasy that aren t familiar to me, thrilling and
action packed events are not present, and I do not agree with some of the lessons that the book
portrays.
Components of magical fantasy are used in the novel that I don t understand. Omens, Universal
Languages, and mysterious forces aren t principles that I consider in my daily life and therefore
they aren t familiar to me. For example, Santiago uses Omens as signs that guide him throughout
life. Omens are not a concept that I have learned about until reading this novel. These signals do
not make much sense to me, seeming much too coincidental to be real. Santiago also connects
things in his life through Universal Languages, such as the desert and the caravan. However, a
language that is universal or a language between inanimate things doesn t exist in real life,
making it hard for a reader to imagine such a thing. Finally, in the novel, there are mysterious
forces that teach people of their personal legends, such as the King was to Santiago. It does make
sense for people to realize their dreams and goals through experiences or people. This isn t the
case always in the novel, instead, specific forces inform people of their ... Show more content on

Business Valuation Is The Process Of Estimating What...
MINI RESEARCH PROJECT CONTENTS Business Valuation: In finance, valuation is the process
of estimating what something is worth. Items that are usually valued are a financial asset or
liability. Valuations can be done on assets (for example, investments in marketable securities such
as stocks, options, business enterprises, or intangible assets such as patents and trademarks) or on
liabilities (e.g., bonds issued by a company). Valuations are needed for many reasons such as
investment analysis, capital budgeting, merger and acquisition transactions, financial reporting,
taxable events to determine the proper tax liability, and in litigation. Business valuation is a process
and a set of procedures used to estimate the economic value of an owner s interest in a business.
Valuation is used by financial market participants to determine the price they are willing to pay or
receive to effect a sale of a business. Research Financial Analysis: The financial statement analysis
generally involves Common Size Analysis (a company s financial statement that displays all items
as percentages of a common base figure), Ratio Analysis (liquidity, turnover, profitability, etc.),
Trend Analysis (the practice of collecting information and attempting to spot a pattern, or trend, in
the information.) and Industry Comparative Analysis. This permits the valuation analyst to

The Symbolism Of A Voyage Gone Wrong
6.Device : Dialogue Quote: As the Pequod and the Albatross cross paths, Ahab calls out to the
other ship, Ahoy there! This is the Pequod, bound round the world! Tell them to address all
future letters to the Pacific Ocean! And this time three years, if I am not at home, tell them to
address them to (Melville 234). However, it is unclear if the other ship was able to hear Ahab
over the rough winds that have just knocked the speaking trumpet from the Albatrosses captains
hand. Analysis: The few words Ahab speaks to the Albatrosses captain end with the ominous
thought of the Pequod not making it home to Nantucket. The foreshadowing of a voyage gone
wrong is emphasized not just by the cautionary and if I am not at home..., but also by the
possibility of the unfinished sentence not reaching the other ship. This could allude to the
Pequod being out of reach of any help and destined not to return home. The theme of death in the
entire novel is emphasized here, the ill fated mission of the Pequod dooming her and her crew to
never complete their journey home. 7.Device: Juxtaposition Quote: The narrative of Ishmael

Tax Reform In Australia
Introduction
In the article Tax reform =Growth, the author Rory Meakin (2012) suggests that Australia has a
good tax system but it still has its problems. He compares the tax system between Britain and
Australia as well, and discusses the importance for the government to change its approach of raising
taxes to make it cheaper, fairer and more legitimate in Australia. The article outlines the
complexities of the taxation system in the country, which resulted to the lost of its legitimacy since
many people do not understand how much they should pay. It advises the need for the government
to make the tax system to be as neutral as possible by eliminating complications that will add
confusion to its approach. The journal name tax reform equals to growth and he totally agrees that
raising the tax and keeping the tax neutral is the better way to face the tax problems nowadays.
Main body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author firstly points out the problems of tax system. Too complicated, too many special
allowances and specific taxes, and too much money drained out of the pockets of working
Australians. The author cites many examples, such as national insurance, tax accountancy guides
called ToUey s, the Byzantine complexity, the final report, The Single Income Tax, to state the
necessity to propose a very radical yet necessary change to how the government raises taxes,
aimed at making the system cheaper, fairer and more legitimate. The cost of complexity is high
and, in addition, complexity has led to the tax system having lost legitimacy as many people do not
even really understand how much tax they should pay, let alone how much others should pay. That
opacity, a direct consequence of complexity, inevitably leads many to suspect others of not paying
their fair share. Data is listed to support the view that the complicity of tax system has damaged the
legitimacy of the

Civilization Vs. Savagery In The Lord Of The Flies
Civilization versus Savagery
The Lord of the Flies is a classic novel written by William Golding in the year of 1954. The novel
tells the tale of a group of schoolboys who are miraculously marooned on a desert island after their
plane crashes. At first the boys attempt to govern themselves and to keep a grasp on civilization and
order; In the beginning the island was very much like their home, but eventually this ideology fades
into savagery and brutality. The boys resort to theft, torture and even murder. Although The Lord of
the Flies depicts many themes and morals, the underlying theme is the battle between the human
impulse towards civilization and savagery. This theme is brilliantly and respectively portrayed by
battle of the two characters; Jack and Ralph.
In the beginning there was only the main protagonist Ralph and Piggy, they soon realise that
there is a possibility that there may be other survivors and decide to call the others using a conch
shell that Ralph and Piggy had found earlier, Ralph had stopped smiling and was pointing into
the lagoon. Something creamy lay among the ferny weeds. [p8] The conch is blown by Ralph (
We can use this to call the others [p9]) Children start to emerge from the bushes including a choir
lead by a ginger boy named Jack. Note that they only emerged from hearing the sound of the shell,
there were no other instructions, this immediately makes the conch a symbol of law and order.

With the increasing age, our skin becomes loose so that sooner or later we will develop fine
lines and wrinkles. Finally, after the results of the length of waiting from all those 40s years old
people can enjoy life back their youth. Fortunately, cosmetic surgery can be very effective in
reversing the signs of aging. For example, people with sagging face can look 10 years younger
after a good face lift surgery. And if you have wrinkles, then, use some injections to temporarily

for wanting plastic surgery can provide a very effective means to do so. But if you want that by

Buzzzz Monologue
Buzzzz! Buzzzz! Buzzzz! What is that? I thought to myself. I slowly sit up as I push my knotted
hair out of my face. I reach up to rub my eyes when I notice the bright rays of sun spilling into the
room. Crap! I say, this time out loud. I reach for my phone. Four missed calls. 9:34 a.m. Great, I m
late for school and I have to give my speech today! I quickly throw my hair into a mess on top of
my head and find khakis and a floral print top. A swipe of black eyeliner across each eyelid, a few
swipes of mascara on my eyelashes, and a bit of lip gloss along my lips. I slide a pair of grey toms

Heart Disease. So many families lose loved ones every year to this disease even though Heart
Disease can be prevented. Doing things such as; not smoking, eating healthy and getting enough

people don t take the precautions seriously. With such achievable ways of prevention why is
Heart Disease still the number one killer in the United States? How can this disease be prevented?
Are there ways to treat this condition once it is present? Is second hand smoke a contributor to

Many struggles but I believe if you I work hard, it will paid off in the future. Logic or Intuition
Decisions are important and hard to make. People maybe decide quickly without thinking about
the consequences but on the other half, they will think about it back and forth then they will
reply. Christopher makes his point that people rely on their intuition so much, but I m kindly
disagree with him because it usually based on the ages. As people get older, they become more
aware of they re doing. Intuition usually evolves in easy decision, without any reasons they just
decide as quickly as possible to get out of that problem. I can t say which one people rely on
more because they are different and they solve the problem with their way. Did I used mostly
logic or intuition to make the decision? My answer is I used mostly logic to decide something. I
feel like to have the comfortable feeling, I should think back and forth, then use reasons so I don
t have to hold any consequences later. The way I solve the problem should comfortable others
too because I don t want anyone get in trouble. One time, I had to decide the money I have left,
should I buy my favorite shoes or birthday gift for my friend then I decided to buy birthday gift
because shoes I can buy at anytime but my friend s birthday happens only once a year; so I want
to put my selfish aside and make everyone is happy. Your own selfish will make you move to the

The Arthashastra Of Kautily A Work Of Incredible...
The Arthashastra of Kautilya is a work of profound historical utility and rarity. Like the later works
of Clausewitz and Machiavelli it is a work of astounding clarity and candor. It is a rare and
fascinating look into the realities of administering an aggressive expansionist state. Focused on the
maintenance of good government and the conduct of militaryand foreign policy, the Arthashastrais a
rare look at the early Mauryan state. The work s focus on the military and its maintenance gives a
fascinating and instructive look at the conduct of the Mauryan military and it s place in the
government s relationship with its people and its economy. Power is (possession of) strength.
1Kautilya is an immensely practical, and unsentimental thinker. His Arthashastra is a work that
places at it s fore an extremely utilitarian work, instructing rulers on the acquisition and protection
of this world 2 by utilizing a military system geared toward the rapid and ruthless exploitation of
opportunity, and the creation of a large and loyal army. One of the main insights into the Mauryan
military mindset is the notion of this ruthlessness. Kautilya maintained that all states are acting in
their own self interests and that a good ruler can exploit this reality.3 Strong states will pick on
those that are weaker and weak states will seek advantageous alliance or die.4 As a result of this
emphasis on the self interest of the state, Kautilya made the assertion that all neighboring

Comparison Of Liberty Bell March And Star Wars
Yesterday, I watched the concert band rehearse for their district concert which took place later
that night. As a whole, the music that they selected was well suited to the capability of the
musicians. However, the Liberty Bell March was executed much better in comparison to Star
Wars: The March, as the former appeared to be slightly easier for the band to play. For instance,
the Liberty Bell March by Sousa was the first piece that the musicians performed. This song from
the late romantic period and is very cheery in nature. Within this song, the band had long phrases
and good pitch. Also, the dynamics throughout the march were overall good, but the pianissimo
sections could be quieter. The blend of this song could have been a little bit better,

Sears Research Paper
Sears first opened its doors in 1886. It all started with a man named Richard W. Sears, who
wanted to sell watches to the public by mail orders. He began in Minneapolis, Minnesota and
later relocated to Chicago, Illinois. In 1887, Sears, sent out an ad calling for a watchmaker. A
man known as Alvan C. Roebuck came to Sears, showed him his work, and was hired instantly
due to his craftsmanship. These two twenty year old men, were leading a soon to be a billion
dollar company, that would later go by the name, Sears, Roebuck and Co. At the time, the company
was getting on its feet, farmers were complaining about the high prices that most retail companies
were demanding. Thankfully Sears, Roebuck and Co and others like them were the answers to the
farmer s looming budget problems. That is also where their motto, Shop at Sears, and Save came
to existence. By 1895, he had his own catalog that contained five hundred and thirty two pages with
everything you could ask for, such as, shoes, clothes, wagons, fishing tackle, stoves, furniture, china,
musical instruments, saddles, fire alarms, buggies, bicycles, baby carriages, and glassware almost
anything you could think of, while slowly but surely diversifying its store and entering new

Final Tax Return
When a person dies, filing final tax returns becomes mandatory for the executor of the estate. The
executor must file a final federal income tax return and a final state income tax return (if required)
reporting all income earned by the decedent in the final year of life up until the day of death.
Furthermore, even if the executor hires a taxprofessional to file the final tax returns, the executor
must know how to prepare the information needed by the tax professional. Otherwise, the tax
professional will charge the estate a substantial amount to handle the preparation as well as the
filing of the final tax returns.
How to Prepare the Final Tax Returns
As explained in the article Track the Estate Income, income earned by the decedent in the final
year of life up until the day of death requires reporting on the final tax returns. In addition, since
most 1099 s will report income earned for the entire year, the executor needs to be aware that the

Latin America. This new company had 112 miles of railroad, 212,394 acres of land, and a capital
of $11,230,00 and proceeded to buy lands in Santo Domingo, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, and
Cuba, and increase additional acreage in Nicaragua, Jamaica, and Colombia (May and Plaza

Primarily, the first issue that arises is the fact that a company that was founded in the United States
dealing with military dictatorships in less advanced politically as well as economically countries
than themselves is undoubtedly a form of exploitation, but also manipulation as citizens of the
United States would not have been aware such a relationship existed between the United Fruit
company and Latin American military dictatorships. In addition to this, Frank Pearce (1976)
argues that corporations with the connivance of the American state act systematically to control
the markets in which they operate. Using the example of the United Fruit Company in
Guatemala from 1899 to 1944, we can see this to be accurate as by doing business with dictators,
United Fruit grew into el pulpo (the octopus) with a vast enterprise extending far beyond were it
extracted bananas (Dosal 2005, p.3).Linking in with this, it is often the case that whilst exploiting
a foreign populace the corporation is not acting on its own. The state can act as a facilitator for the
process of exploitation and profit over people. For example, the U.S Government bears
responsibility for United Fruit s enterprises as it encouraged the government of Guatemala to adopt
policies that would benefit American enterprise and the United Fruit Company (Dosal 2005, p.3).
Corporations and the state participate in criminality as a direct result of the nature and ethos of
capitalism. Despite the

teacher is holding office hours whenever possible, and although that is limited by the teachers

extremely beneficial for students who may otherwise feel awkward asking a classmate they just
met if they would like to study together. One student stated, Most of what BHS would probably
try to offer, most kids seek out on their own. It would be nice to set up a peer study group at a set
location on days when teacher is not available if only for the students who don t have friends
they feel they can rely on. That way no one feels excluded when it comes to studying, and those
who typically cannot rely on teacher or friends have somewhere to go. From my own experience,
all of my advanced courses in high schoolwere filled with at least a few of my friends (perks of
going to a smaller school), so finding help was not a huge issue. However, in college, study

The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olauda Equiano The narrative by Olaudah Equiano
gives an interesting perspective of slavery both within and outside of Africa in the eighteenth
century. From these writings we can gain insight into the religion and customs of an African
culture. We can also see how developed the system of trade was within Africa, and worldwide by
this time. Finally, we hear an insider s view on being enslaved, how slaves were treated in Africa,
and what the treatment of African slaves was like at the hands of the Europeans. Olaudah spends a

They seemed, if we take him at his word, to be a friendly and civilized people. As he put it
cheerfulness and affability are two of the leading characteristics of our nation. The village
economy was particularly interesting, and Olaudah s descriptions are very revealing. His
people needed guns because other villages had them. The guns were brought to Africa by the
Europeans, who used them to trade. (That the Europeans both supplied and fulfilled this need
bears mention.) Olaudah states that he had never seen a European; his people traded with
wandering merchants who acted as middlemen. These middlemen traded guns for potash, which
they probably used in trade again elsewhere. Later in his life Olaudah also saw iron pots,
crossbows, and European cutlasses among African people. This clearly illustrates the trade that
developed between coastal tribes and Europeans, and the existence of middlemen who worked
along established trade routes. There is also evidence of the Columbian Exchange in this writing:
the crops that Olaudah mentions his people raised. He says that they grew corn and tobacco,
These crops were unknown in Afroeurasia before Columbus returned from the New World barely
two hundred and fifty years earlier. These two crops traveled from the Western Hemisphere via
very indirect trade routes, over a period of many years. They became staples in a rural village

Analysis Of Fernand Leger s The Divers
With most of the 20 elements and principles evident in the painting The Divers (Red and Black)
by Fernand Leger, we can achieve a better understanding and cohesiveness of this piece.
Additionally, alongside with his other paintings, the medium used for this painting was also oil on
canvas. In this painting, Leger incorporates a specific style called Cubismand incorporates a strong
simple imagery. The artist s personal style consists of bold use of colorwhile combining his art as
something that everyone can enjoy. A brief formal analysis of this painting will show us how he
used the main principle of emphasis to showcase the characteristics of the humanbody progressing
in space. In order to demonstrate these specific characteristics, Leger incorporates many
different types of elements into this piece. In this painting, color plays an important role. The
shapes of the blue squares contrast altogether with the other shapes and also, with the mutated
beige background. Leger uses numerous colors such as the neon yellow, red, blue, black, and
green in order to reveal that the colors are free and therefore, these colors exist in space. As
mentioned earlier, this painting included a variety of different shapes; there are two different
types of shape that can be seen in this painting. The first type is geometric or regular shapes such
as the squares, circles, and rectangles. The second, on the other hand, are organic and freeform
shapes such as the feet, hands, and face. Next, Leger incorporates many lines throughout this
portrait. From curved lines to a single horizontal line, Leger includes each different type to
develop a sense of movement, or rhythm. The curved lines makes the viewer s eyes circle
around the piece to further realize the symbolism. For space, Leger leaves many of the corner as
negative space. However, the corners of this painting are not the only ones Leger leaves as space.
Because the shapes and colors are kept simple, there s also quite a series of distance between the
shapes even throughout the whole entire painting. Again, because of the simplicity of the shapes,
even the texture of this painting can be seen as smooth. The painting does not involve any harsh or
rugged lines, and is

Whales are highly intelligent creatures and possess many human like qualities such as the ability to
teach, learn, cooperate, and grieve. They communicate using echolocation, by which sounds are
able to travel for miles as the sound waves propagate in the water (Whale Communication and
Vocalizations, 2015). The sounds will echo back to the whalethat sends them and this form of
communicationcan travel at a speed of one mile per second. Different species of whales take on
various forms of communication as is evident by the humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae,
who communicate by singing. Both male and female humpback whales vocalize, but only the
males produce the characteristically loud and complex song with distinct themes and melodies...

The communication between humpback whales of different regions is shown by a pattern of
horizontal transmission of multiple song types in an unidirectional pattern eastward through the
populations in the western and South Pacific over an 11 year period displays (Murray et al., 2012).
Most song types were first documented in the eastern Australian population and spread to New
Caledonia and Tonga, and then on to American Samoa, the Cook Islands, and finally to French
Polynesia (Garland et al., 2011). This example of cultural transmission of behavior was replicated in
multiple populations in a vast geographic region and the level and rate of change of this cultural
transmission is unparalleled by any other nonhuman animal (Murray et al., 2012). The vocal
linkage between the Indian and South Pacific Ocean basins raises the question of how far a single
song type can be horizontally transmitted and how adaptive humpback whales are to change in their
habitat (Southern Indian ocean humpback whales found singing different tunes, 2015).

  • 2. The Impact Of The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906 The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and Recovery. What did the people of San Francisco suffer after the earthquake of 1906? In order to answer this question, we need to know what the San Francisco earthquake was. The San Francisco earthquake happened in 1906 with a magnitude of 7.8 and caused a fire that burned for 7 days. This was the biggest recorded earthquake in San Francisco. The foreshock started at 5:12am and 25 seconds later the earthquake started that lasted 40 to 60 seconds, with most San Franciscans asleep in rooms, they became trapped with only their hope to save them. The earthquake and fire of San Francisco in 1906 will go down as one of the worst earthquakes in the United States history. It s after affects can still be felt in the California area. The San Francisco earthquake caused quite a lot of damage in the area, but what is an earthquake? An earthquake is the movement of tectonic plates along a transform boundary and what plate is California sitting on? The Pacific Plate which is not connected to the North American plate and the plate boundary is a transform boundary. Earthquakes occur so often there that people say it is like a rainstorm that is ignored. The place where the Pacific Plate is grinding along with the North American Plate is called the San Andreas Fault. As stated before the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 which caused so much destruction a fire broke out. Nobody really knows where the fire started but it burned for 7 days and scorched over 500 city blocks leaving the once proud and powerful city into dust. The combination of the earthquake and fire is said to have killed Over 700 deaths by the earthquake and fire is now believed to be an understatement the total loss of life by a factor of 3 or 4. (The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.) Even before the earthquake people saw suspicious things with animals. For example, Lisa A. Chippendale in her book The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, quoted Sergeant Cook who stated The horses seemed skittish, frequently neighing and nervously pulling at their reins. Many people were asleep in the time of the shock. By the first shock some shot up and tried to get their clothes on, but their struggle was in vain, they could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Mechanical And Chemical Digestion Of The Digestive System Digestion is the process of breaking larger food particles into smaller particles that can pass through the plasma membrane. The digestive system is in charge of this process. To begin, the mouth receives food, breaking it into smaller particles by chewing, a form of mechanical digestion with the teeth, for absorption. The tongue aids in this process of chewing and swallowing as a muscular organ. Additionally, the salivary glands in the mouth secrete saliva to help lubricate the food and begin chemical digestionwith its digestive enzyme, salivary amylase. Also aiding in chemical digestion in the mouth is mucin. When in the mouth, salivary mucins functions as a protective layer. Once formed into a small rounded mass, called a bolus, the food passes through a sphincter, a muscular ring that regulates the size of an opening, and enters the esophagus, a muscular tube leading to the stomach. No additional digestion occurs here. For the food to travel, it is lubricated with mucus and moved by peristalsis into the stomach. At the end of the esophagus, at the opening to the stomach, is a sphincter. Once in the stomach, a J shaped organ in the upper left region of the abdominal cavity, the food goes through additional mechanical and chemical digestion. The churning action of the stomach muscles physically breaks down the food while the acids and enzymes released help breakdown the nutrients. Hydrochloric acid, a strong acid, helps break down protein and destroy foreign ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Effects Of Global Warming On The Health Of Humans And... Global warming is one of the largest environmental problems of the time, and this naturally occurring phenomenon intensified by pollution has become a threat to the health of humans and wildlife, communities, and economies around the world. Normal greenhouses gases (GHGs) present in the atmosphere include carbon dioxide, water vapor, and nitrous oxide. These gases prohibit too much infrared radiation from reflecting back into space; hence, they trap this energy in the atmosphereto create a constant temperature for Earth. Therefore, the term greenhouse describes how these gases surround and regulate the Earth s temperature like a greenhouse or glasshouse for plants. In addition to the natural atmospheric gases, humans have artificially created an additional GHG composed of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) which are non flammable chemicals are composed of chlorine, fluorine, and carbon found in refrigerant and aerosol products. Humans are not only constructing new GHGs but also dramatically increasing the amount of the natural gases such as carbon dioxide. Combing the emissions directly from the tailpipe to the extraction and production of fuel, the transportation sector is responsible for 30% of the United States emissions of carbon dioxide and other global warminggases. The human population is increasing and becoming more dependent on fossil fuels particularly for fuel, yet the burning of fossil fuels cause an increase of two to three parts per million in carbon dioxide ... • 8. The Toulmin Model Of Argument Stephen Toulmin, one of the most significant philosophers of our generation. Mr. Toulmin produced widespread analyses from morals, science, and ethical reasoning and established a different method for examining arguments, which is recognized as the Toulmin model of argumentation. Stephen Toulmin model of argumentation was not realized in Great Britain, but when he got to America those same ideas manifested to become the Toulmin model we know today. In the earlier stages of The Toulmin model it was used in debate manuals. The Toulmin model analyzes the strength and weaknesses of any argumentation. The Toulmin model has advanced into the rhetorical interpretation of literary texts. This tool is used for developing, examining, and classifying arguments. There are six parts of the model of argumentfrom the claim, data, warrant, backing, modality, and rebuttal. The claim is the position or claim, which is argued for the deduction of the argument. For example a claim would be cars over 20 years old shouldn t be allowed on the road. The data are the foundation or basis for the claim, the support. An example of data would be older vehicles pollute the environment and are less safe than newer car models. The play, Macbeth and poem, My Last Duchess both show psychological truths and insights into the characters. Macbeth written by William Shakespeare and set in 1050 contains themes of status, power and death while My Last Duchessby Robert Browningwritten in 1842 shows how status, wealth and the marriage market can affect a man s life. The two scenes symbolise how Macbeth has become infatuated with power and is willing to do anything to keep it. This exhibits his obsessive nature. Macbeth s use of language in Act 5, Scene 5 infers that life is pointless. He suggests that life until we die means nothing. Creeps in this petty pace from day To the last syllable of recorded time. Components of magical fantasy are used in the novel that I don t understand. Omens, Universal Languages, and mysterious forces aren t principles that I consider in my daily life and therefore they aren t familiar to me. For example, Santiago uses Omens as signs that guide him throughout life. Omens are not a concept that I have learned about until reading this novel. However, it is unclear if the other ship was able to hear Ahab over the rough winds that have just knocked the speaking trumpet from the Albatrosses captains hand. Analysis: The few words Ahab speaks to the Albatrosses captain end with the ominous thought of the Pequod not making it home to Nantucket. The foreshadowing of a voyage gone wrong is emphasized not just by the cautionary and if I am not at home..., but also by the possibility of the unfinished sentence not reaching the other ship. The novel tells the tale of a group of schoolboys who are miraculously marooned on a desert island after their plane crashes. At first the boys attempt to govern themselves and to keep a grasp on civilization and order; In the beginning the island was very much like their home, but eventually this ideology fades into savagery and brutality. The boys resort to theft, torture and even murder. Although The Lord of the Flies depicts many themes and morals, the underlying theme is the battle between the human impulse towards civilization and savagery. This theme is brilliantly and respectively portrayed by battle of the two characters; Jack and Ralph. In the beginning there was only the main protagonist Ralph and Piggy, they soon realise that there is a possibility that there may be other survivors and decide to call the others using a conch shell that Ralph and Piggy had found earlier, Ralph had stopped smiling and was pointing into the lagoon. • 29. Sears Research Paper Sears first opened its doors in 1886. It all started with a man named Richard W. Sears, who wanted to sell watches to the public by mail orders. He began in Minneapolis, Minnesota and later relocated to Chicago, Illinois. In 1887, Sears, sent out an ad calling for a watchmaker. A man known as Alvan C. Roebuck came to Sears, showed him his work, and was hired instantly due to his craftsmanship. These two twenty year old men, were leading a soon to be a billion dollar company, that would later go by the name, Sears, Roebuck and Co. At the time, the company was getting on its feet, farmers were complaining about the high prices that most retail companies were demanding. Thankfully Sears, Roebuck and Co and others like them were the answers to the farmer s looming budget problems. That is also where their motto, Shop at Sears, and Save came to existence. By 1895, he had his own catalog that contained five hundred and thirty two pages with everything you could ask for, such as, shoes, clothes, wagons, fishing tackle, stoves, furniture, china, musical instruments, saddles, fire alarms, buggies, bicycles, baby carriages, and glassware almost anything you could think of, while slowly but surely diversifying its store and entering new markets. • 30. Final Tax Return When a person dies, filing final tax returns becomes mandatory for the executor of the estate. The executor must file a final federal income tax return and a final state income tax return (if required) reporting all income earned by the decedent in the final year of life up until the day of death. Furthermore, even if the executor hires a taxprofessional to file the final tax returns, the executor must know how to prepare the information needed by the tax professional. Otherwise, the tax professional will charge the estate a substantial amount to handle the preparation as well as the filing of the final tax returns. How to Prepare the Final Tax Returns As explained in the article Track the Estate Income, income earned by the decedent in the final year of life up until the day of death requires reporting on the final tax returns. The United Fruit Company was founded 1899, after the takeover of the Boston Fruit Company, thus forming the largest banana company in the world (Landmeier, 1997). This new company had 112 miles of railroad, 212,394 acres of land, and a capital of $11,230,00 and proceeded to buy lands in Santo Domingo, Honduras, Guatemala, Panama, and Cuba, and increase additional acreage in Nicaragua, Jamaica, and Colombia (May and Plaza 1958, p.7) as well as exporting 16 million bunches of bananas per year. Primarily, the first issue that arises is the fact that a company that was founded in the United States dealing with military dictatorships in less advanced politically as well as economically countries than themselves is undoubtedly a form of exploitation, but also manipulation as citizens of the United States would not have been aware such a relationship existed between the United Fruit company and Latin American military dictatorships. In addition to this, Frank Pearce (1976) argues that corporations with the connivance of the American state act systematically to control the markets in which they operate. Using the example of the United Fruit Company in Guatemala from 1899 to 1944, we can see this to be accurate as by doing business with dictators, United Fruit grew into el pulpo (the octopus) with a vast enterprise extending far beyond were it extracted bananas (Dosal 2005, p.3).Linking in with this, it is often the case that whilst exploiting a foreign populace the corporation is not acting on its own. The state can act as a facilitator for the process of exploitation and profit over people. For example, the U.S Government bears responsibility for United Fruit s enterprises as it encouraged the government of Guatemala to adopt policies that would benefit American enterprise and the United Fruit Company (Dosal 2005, p.3). Currently, the teacher is holding office hours whenever possible, and although that is limited by the teachers availability, the formation of a study group is not. A school sponsored study group can be extremely beneficial for students who may otherwise feel awkward asking a classmate they just met if they would like to study together. One student stated, Most of what BHS would probably try to offer, most kids seek out on their own. It would be nice to set up a peer study group at a set location on days when teacher is not available if only for the students who don t have friends they feel they can rely on. That way no one feels excluded when it comes to studying, and those who typically cannot rely on teacher or friends have somewhere to go. From my own experience, all of my advanced courses in high schoolwere filled with at least a few of my friends (perks of going to a smaller school), so finding help was not a huge issue. However, in college, study groups became my life outside the classroom. Last semester, I spent eight hours a week in study groups, and without them, I would have probably had to take a few courses again. The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olauda Equiano The narrative by Olaudah Equiano gives an interesting perspective of slavery both within and outside of Africa in the eighteenth century. From these writings we can gain insight into the religion and customs of an African culture. We can also see how developed the system of trade was within Africa, and worldwide by this time. Finally, we hear an insider s view on being enslaved, how slaves were treated in Africa, and what the treatment of African slaves was like at the hands of the Europeans. As he put it cheerfulness and affability are two of the leading characteristics of our nation. The village economy was particularly interesting, and Olaudah s descriptions are very revealing. His people needed guns because other villages had them. The guns were brought to Africa by the Europeans, who used them to trade. (That the Europeans both supplied and fulfilled this need bears mention.) Olaudah states that he had never seen a European; his people traded with wandering merchants who acted as middlemen. These middlemen traded guns for potash, which they probably used in trade again elsewhere. Later in his life Olaudah also saw iron pots, crossbows, and European cutlasses among African people. This clearly illustrates the trade that developed between coastal tribes and Europeans, and the existence of middlemen who worked along established trade routes. There is also evidence of the Columbian Exchange in this writing: the crops that Olaudah mentions his people raised. He says that they grew corn and tobacco, These crops were unknown in Afroeurasia before Columbus returned from the New World barely two hundred and fifty years earlier. These two crops traveled from the Western Hemisphere via very indirect trade routes, over a period of many years. They became staples in a rural village miles from the African coast. • 35. Analysis Of Fernand Leger s The Divers With most of the 20 elements and principles evident in the painting The Divers (Red and Black) by Fernand Leger, we can achieve a better understanding and cohesiveness of this piece. Additionally, alongside with his other paintings, the medium used for this painting was also oil on canvas. In this painting, Leger incorporates a specific style called Cubismand incorporates a strong simple imagery. The artist s personal style consists of bold use of colorwhile combining his art as something that everyone can enjoy. A brief formal analysis of this painting will show us how he used the main principle of emphasis to showcase the characteristics of the humanbody progressing in space. In order to demonstrate these specific characteristics, Leger incorporates many different types of elements into this piece. In this painting, color plays an important role. The shapes of the blue squares contrast altogether with the other shapes and also, with the mutated beige background. Leger uses numerous colors such as the neon yellow, red, blue, black, and green in order to reveal that the colors are free and therefore, these colors exist in space. As mentioned earlier, this painting included a variety of different shapes; there are two different types of shape that can be seen in this painting. The first type is geometric or regular shapes such as the squares, circles, and rectangles. The second, on the other hand, are organic and freeform shapes such as the feet, hands, and face. Next, Leger incorporates many lines throughout this portrait. From curved lines to a single horizontal line, Leger includes each different type to develop a sense of movement, or rhythm. The curved lines makes the viewer s eyes circle around the piece to further realize the symbolism. For space, Leger leaves many of the corner as negative space. However, the corners of this painting are not the only ones Leger leaves as space. Because the shapes and colors are kept simple, there s also quite a series of distance between the shapes even throughout the whole entire painting. Again, because of the simplicity of the shapes, even the texture of this painting can be seen as smooth. The painting does not involve any harsh or rugged lines, and is ...
