Harry Harlow Research Papers
The Well of Despair

The Well of Despair
Harry Harlow conducted experiments on rhesus monkeys to research the nature of maternal love (
Harry Harlow, 2017). He used maternal deprivation and social isolation experiments to do so. The
first experiment he conducted was to find out what kind of maternal care the monkeys needed to be
normal; Harlow raised the infant monkeys with artificial mothers to see how different types of
mothers would affect the monkeys growth and reaction. He used a variety of mothers to research
the different preferences, and he thought that the ideal mother was a mother, soft, warm, and
tender, a mother with infinite patience, a mother available 24 hours a day (Slater, 2008, n.pag.).
He used two mothers in this experiment: one was made out of terrycloth and the other one was
made out of wire ( Harry Harlow, 2017). The wire mother provided the monkeys with the materials
the babies needed to survive, like milk and food. On ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He used equipment like the rape rack, iron maidens, and the well of despair which caused
emotional trauma to the infants ( Harry Harlow, 2017). Rape rack was a forced mating device;
the mothers who had their baby using this device were abusive to their children. These mothers
were unable to form any kind of bond to their children because they were deprived of that
themselves. Iron maidens were the surrogate mothers that tormented the monkeys by shooting
sharp spikes, and cold air that was so forceful that the monkeys were thrown across the cages,
clinging and screaming (Slater, 2004). Lastly, well of despair was where the monkeys were left
in dark chambers for up to a year ( Harry Harlow, 2017). The infants that were left in isolation
were very disturbed. Harlow tried very hard to reverse the depression using multiple kinds of
therapy, but they all failed to

Cabaret Movie Comparison
After watching both of the films for this week I definitely noticed a difference in the film narratives
due to musical numbers and how they were integrated. While watching 42nd Street, the musical
numbers were quite confusing to me. I struggled to understand how they provided context to the
film. As I did not see how they fit within the storyline of the films. I also believe the disconnection
between the numbers and the filmmade me question, the films event s and I thought I
misunderstood certain moments in the film because the musical numbers did not make sense. I also
did not enjoy the fact that during the numbers themselves there was dialogue going on and the
focus shifted during the number. I think this lessened the impact of the number... Show more content

It was as if the focus was the music numbers opposed to the films, which in my opinion is the
best part of a musical. I enjoyed watching the numbers and seeing the elaborate costumes and
details that were put into them. Furthermore, in Cabaret, one could tell that the music numbers
really fit in with the film and provided more insight into what was going on. A good example of
this was the during the musical number Maybe This Time sung by Sally which demonstrated her
relationship with Brian and how it has evolved. Their relationship turned into more than a
friendship and as the number goes on Sally sings of the hope she has of this relationship being
the real deal and withstanding the test of time.Through this musical number the audience is able
to understood how Sally is feeling without the use of any actual dialogue. I do believe there is
some relation between the context of integration/non integration and the contexts in which the
films were made. 42nd Street was created during the Great Depression and it seems as if there
was some caution in terms of the film was made. It seems as if the events of the film were more so
on the safe side and no feathers were

What Is Listening To Your Voice
Listening to Your Voice
How many of us actually listens to the person we are having a conversation with? Really listen?
Not just to the actual words that they are saying but also to the hidden language that is often
referred to as body language .
Listening this is an active process. It involves the use of many of our senses not just hearing the
obvious one. What tone of voice are they using? What expressions are on their face? What are the
surroundings like in which the conversation is taking place? A place of peace or a place of
conflict? How many individuals are in the room? Is the conversation in person or taking place
virtually? What are the ages of the individuals? What is the relationship like between the
individuals or the group who are talking? All of these factors and many others will ... Show more

The conversation must have a goal a purpose for the meeting to occur. Do you know what the
agenda is? Is it a spontaneous conversation? Your physical body may be in the location that you are
having the conversation in, but where is your mind? To really listen to, the mind and the body must
be both present in the same location.
Listening to your... Now this is the core of the conversation. We need to listen to someone else. We
need to have a dialogue and not a monologue. Too often we are not really listening to the other
person but formulating our own ideas in our mind. Listening is an unselfish act, as we are putting
the needs of another person above our own. We are letting them know that they truly matter; that we
value their time and ideas, which they are sharing with us. In an ideal situation we will both benefit
from the conversation.
Listening to your voice. When we think about these words we automatically think about the vocal
voice. What about the unspoken voice? The communication that takes place between individuals
with looks, gestures, specific habits? The use of Sign Languages? The use of the Morse code? Do

Marketing Unit Essay
Marketing Unit
Throughout this unit I am going to try to develop my own marketing strategy and techniques for
the company Tommy Hilfiger. The store that
I will be assessing is the Bluewater store. I will attempt to identify the methods and strategies that
are used by the company when promoting and trying to increase the sales of the Tommy Denim
range of jeans and clothing, I shall then attempt to develop my own, better strategies.
Marketing is essential to the success of any business. Its primary aim is to enable businesses to
meet the needs of their customers and potential customers, whether for profit or not but in the long
term hopefully increasing sales.

* The location of the unit within the shopping complex The situation of the store also adds to the
problems in the sense that the store is located on the upper mall in a section of the complex that is
surrounded by expensive, top brand named stores. This does not help as the younger target market
often do not browse around the area and stick to the sections where all of the high street brands are
situated.
* The current persona of the brand When people think of the Tommy Hilfigerlabel, they tend to
think of big flags and bold designs, which in today s market is uncalled for. People want discrete
labels. Also the Tommy Hilfiger range of clothing is associated more with the older, more mature
and classic age group of people and so this image of the brand needs to be overcome.
* Strong competition from more popular brands. Being situated in a shopping complex, there are
many other shops that provide similar, alternative denim products. Customers often opt for these
alternatives because they are cheaper or are accustomed with a better brand name.
By the analysis of various data that I shall collect from within the store I will attempt to come up
with a marketing strategy to promote the sales of the Tommy

The Role Of Ma Joad In The Grapes Of Wrath
The Climbing Vines of Society John Steinbeck s novel leaves writers with a fluctuation of ranging
emotions, from hope and encouragement to hate and frustration. There is almost absolutely no
doubt that The Grapes of Wrath encompasses the will to survive and hold onto one s family.
Through Steinbeck s characters, a reader can find similar identities and understand the risks taken
according to society s values and laws. Awareness of the decade will also broaden the perspective
of the actions taken by these real life characters. Like the actual world and events, even though these
characters are fictional, an action may leave someone alienated and questioning their morals.

When is it honorable in society s opinion that Rose of Sharon can be gloomy? In many ways of
answering, Steinbeck morbidly offers a stillborn baby. She picked up a lantern and held it over
an apple box in the corner. On a newspaper lay a blue shriveled little mummy. Never breathed,
said Mrs. Wainwright softly. Never was alive... (Steinbeck 444). While the audience may feel
the passionate rage from the injustice shown to the Joad family by the writer along with many
other families. Steinbeck, in my opinion, downplays the grief by placing Rose of Sharon into a
worn out sleep. Even when the once to be mother wakes up there are no wails of the unfairness
of life, just the need to get out of the flood and continue to exist. ...Come quick, fore it rains
again, she told Pa. Come on Rosasharn. We re goin to a dry place. I can walk (Steinbeck 451).
In the battle of survival, when working as a group, there is a silent need not to weigh others down
and it is essential to keep moving. Rose of Sharon, even after labor does not slow down her family.
After this event, Rose of Sharon is treated

experience that Riley wanted to share with people, in the way of his general appreciation that
New York city has given to him. For six weekends at the Brooklyn Navy Yard more than 2,000
pigeons were put on an avian powered light show and hundreds of tiny lights shot up (Newman,
Andy). The inspiration for Fly by Night came during the process of the Trading with the Enemy
where he put a light on one of the birds which made him thinks what it would be like to see more

Macbeth Minor Characters
William Shakespeare is known for his amazing use of minor characters to display themes and be
assets to whatever the major character is going through. In the process, Shakespeare generates
major interest from the readers for these minor characters. One may ask, why do I feel so
strongly for these characters? The answer cannot be any clearer; it is because they are presented
in a major manner even though they are minor and in the short amount of time they are seen in
the play, they make themselves stick to the readers. A prime example of this rare capability is
presented in Shakespeare s Macbeth. In this tragedy, Macduff s family is killed in cold blood. But
for the amount of time they were presented in the play, one scene in Act IV Scene ii,... Show more

Lady Macduff s first words are both a question and an allegation. She asks What had he done to
make him fly the land. (IV.ii.1) This allows one to believe that she thinks the only way Macduff
would leave is if he did something wrong. Lady Macduff then accuses Macduff of not loving
him. The anger, hurt, and feelings of betrayal behind the words of Lady Macduff immediately
makes the audience enamored and captivated by her presence and yearn for her to find out the
truth; that Macduff is not a traitor, but a hero, trying to save the face of the crown. In the
situation of Macduff s son, he s confused as to whether his father is a traitor or not and he denies
his father s death twice during this scene. Once when his mother insists and a second time,
shouting to the second murderer Thou liest though shag haired villain! (IV.ii.79) This
demonstrates Macbeth s son loyalty for his father, even he is confused as to what a traitor is and
unsure if his father is alive or dead. Macduff s son s unwavering loyalty for his father warms the
heart of those reading and allows them to feel horror at hid death commanded by no other than the

Queens In Beowulf
The fictional Queens in Beowulf are shown as a ideal model for the real noblewomen and
Queens in the early Germanic tribes. The Queens in Beowulf are proven to be good or have
acceptable behavior if they are peace weavers, play the role as hostess in the mead hall, and give
gifts to her warriors. There were also examples of the Queens acting diplomatically and actively
engaging in political affairs. All of these traits seem to be praiseworthy in the tale of Beowulf,
making it likely that these traits were also praiseworthy for the actual Queens of the early
Germanic people. Beowulf is a poem published by a clergyman in the tenth century while the tale is

the peso s volatility increased to P0.30 in April and P0.59 in May which was caused by the
depreciation of the value of the currency. In June, volatility decreased to P0.23. This was
attributable to the increase of the country s GDP by 5.5% in the second quarter of 2006. But it

Character Analysis Of Regina George And Kate Sanders
Just as rules and boundaries exist in most of the world, they also make their way into the movie
making industry, in particularly in Hollywood films. Hollywood moviemakers focus on relatable,
real life possible events, which they dramatize and turn into big hit blockbusters. In order to
categorize their many productions, they use the notion of genre and create their own rules
/qualifications to be able to classify movies as such. This categorization even persists within the
movies themselves, especially within the extremely popular teen girl genre. Teen girl films focus
primarily on the stereotypical junior high/high school life of an adolescent female. Thus, the
narrative of the films must contain specific rules and character types that encompass high school
life. To make a real seller, the most often used character type is the so called mean or popular girl
in a social hierarchy based school. In order to be identified as the mean and popular girl character,
one must be physically attractive, judgmental/cruel, and be the center of attention. To understand
this archetypal character type it is best to examine the two most infamous popular girls in the
industry, Regina George, and Kate Sanders. Although, Regina George and Kate Sanders exist in
two very distinct narratives, their personality traits are not at all different or unique. Interestingly,
since The Lizzie McGuireMovie was produced before Mean Girls, Kate Sanders ends up being the
first typical

infamy are the famous words Franklin Delano Roosevelt used to describe one of the most
damaging surprise attacks placed on the United States. On this day of heartbreak, Japanese planes
attacked the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, killing over two thousand people and
leaving Americans terrified and confused. The day after Japan attacked the U.S, Franklin Delano

He states that The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was

in the Pacific. This proving that the United States had not done anything to provoke this attack.
Because the U.S. have done nothing to deserve this attack, FDR believes it is only logical to fight
back. FDR wants the people of the United States to know that they do not deserve to be walked on,
which is why it is logical to fight back. After FDR told the audience that we did nothing to provoke
this attack, he then let the audience know that Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an

the audience think logically of how much danger they will be in if they do not act soon.

paramount to survival; yet, in the era in which we live it is often used against us. Fearmongering
is a device used by advertisers, media, and politicians. Governments such as Russia s use so called
politics of fear(emphasis added) as a weapon to maintain control over their people by repressing or

Neo Liberalism
Neoliberalism is the ability to globally trade, prosper and develop fairly and equitably among other
countries. Neoliberalism policies allow for countries to import/export goods and services, trade and
settle debts among countries. Neoliberalism policies stress privatization, export production, direct
foreign investment, and few restrictions on imports (Rowntree, Lewis, Price, Wyckoff, 2008).
There are several Latin American countries who are accepting the neoliberalismideology; however,
there are some countries like Peru and Boliviawho are not embracing the neoliberalism philosophy.
Recent protests in Peru and Bolivia reflect the popular anger against trade policies that seem to
benefit only the elite (Rowntree, Lewis, Price, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For neoliberals, liberty is best preserved by a minimal state and economic utility best secured
through free markets ( Neoliberalism Deregulation, ).The concept of deregulation is not meant to
eliminate government from fraud, but rather reducing government control in the business, thus
allowing more of a free market.
Privatization is the idea that the government should transfer all government operated industries to
the private sector. These government owned businesses include, but are not limited to, banks,
schools and hospitals. Sell state owned enterprises, goods and services to private investors. This
includes banks, key industries, railroads, toll highways, electricity, schools, hospitals and even
fresh water. Although usually done in the name of greater efficiency, which is often needed,
privatization has mainly had the effect of concentrating wealth even more in a few hands and
making the public pay even more for its needs (Garcia, Martinez). One may argue that privatization
is ineffective because it only benefit the ones who can afford to purchase these government entities.
However, according to The Latin American and Caribbean Research Network Project, authors
Alberto Chong and Florencio Lopez De Silanes discuss the benefits of privatization. Overall, the
empirical record shows that privatization leads not only to higher profitability, but also to large

Don Sanders And The Issue Of Tuition Free Public College...
Break. Stand. Fight.
Campaign Trail Rhetoric from Bernie Sanders and the
Issue of Tuition Free Public College
Money seems to be a big problem here in America according to Vermont Senator, Bernie Sanders.
He s urging Californians to vote for a new direction in the Democratic party (Sanders Ad), and by
virtue of that, put an end to the apparent corruption and misappropriation of this prized token of
trade. In a rousing and inspirational commercial the Senator wanted us, as citizens of the Golden
State, to not only vote for Bernie on June 7, but to get excited and maybe even a little angry about
how money is the biggest and most corrupt problem here in America, particularly in regards to the
issue of Tuition Free Public College, where he encouraged us to fight for our right to free higher
education and the promise of a greater nation. With better educated citizens strengthening our
future economy, and a solid plan to fund tuition free college for everyone by taxing the abundance
of dollars being traded in Wall Street, Mr. Sanders has a confident and trustworthy proposal to get
more Americans into a degree, however in the context of this 30 second television commercial he
seems to fall short on his reasoning to back these ideas, and relies chiefly on the emotions of his
constituents by simply reminding them of his views.
If you re a California Democrat, this ad s for you. Here Bernie is primarily aiming at middle and
lower income citizens, of all major ethnicities, who are

Religious Conflict in Russia
RELIGIOUS CONFLICT IN RUSSIA
One of the great ironies of history is that Marxism, an atheistic theory, was first implemented in
RussiaВ—a land inhabited by millions of believers practicing most of the world s great religions.
In fact, religion is so integral to the culture and history of Russia, it would be impossible to gain a
full understanding for the unique character of the country and its people without a careful
examination of the religious factors at play throughout its history.
BACKGROUND
Basic Demographics Any discussion of Russia must begin with its single most striking
featureВ—its sheer vastness. During World War II, a German general noted how his troops were

In terms of languages, Russian is the common official language throughout the Federation,
understood by 99 percent of its current inhabitants and widespread in many adjacent areas of Asia
and Eastern Europe. However, national subdivisions of Russia have additional official languages,
further reflecting the diverse ethnicity of the country. As a result, there are more than 100
languages spoken throughout the nation, most tied to the particular ethnic groups from which they
sprang.
Economics and Education Perhaps the most significant impact of the collapse of the Soviet Union
in 1991 has been the economic chaos which subsequently consumed the country. For five years
following the collapse, Russia saw its comparatively developed centrally planned economy
contract severely. It was not until 1997 that Russia began to show signs of recovery as a result
of its new open market policies. Since that time, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the
country has grown by an average of 6.7 percent per year, largely on the back of oil exports, as
well as a steadily developing service and industrial output. Currently, Russia s GDP by purchasing
power parity (PPP) is approximately $1.5 trillion, making it the ninth largest economy in the world
and the fifth largest in Europe. If this growth rate is sustained, the country will become the second
largest European economy after Germany and the sixth largest in

Unix Security Essay
An Overview of UNIX Security
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the security of UNIX. Considerations shall be given
regarding generalized security aspects of a typical UNIX system. The ultimate scope of the
following presentation shall remain within the boundaries of a few of the more critical UNIX
security aspects. Of particular note will be discussion regarding standard user access, root access,
file system security, and internet access precautions. This will not focus on specific measures used
to implement security, but rather will investigate both pros and cons typical of a UNIX
installation. Finally, a brief description of UNIX security versus other operating systems will be

Of the utmost security concern is the protection of the root account. The root account allows a
user absolute control of the system, including the ability to alter practically every aspect of the
systems, from individual files to installed programs. Indeed, an entry in Wikipedia.com notes,
that a UNIX administrator should be much like Clark Kent, only using the root account, or
becoming Superman, when absolutely necessary, lest the security of the account be
compromised (2006). Ultimately, this implementation represents a near surefire way to protect
the system against many internal and external threats. By ensuring regularly scheduled root
account password changes and ensuring the passwords are strong, the cons noted previously
should be relatively easy to avoid. File system security is also very important regardless of the
UNIX implementation. UNIX files system security generally allows access permissions to be
granted to various defined users and groups. UNIX also contains an access right flag know as
the sticky bit . The sticky bit can be used to allow users and groups write access to certain
directories within the system. Similarly, the sticky bit can be used by a user to disallow other
users with access to the same directory to alter the contents of the file. The file can only be altered
by the file owner, the directory owner, and the root account (linuxdevcenter.com, 2006). This
particular element allows for a great deal of control

What Is The Juxtaposition Of Light And Dark
Dark and light, good and evil, joy and sadness, real and imaginary: these are the ideas that iconic
Belgian painter RenГ© Magritte, and other surrealist artists like him, strived to arouse in the minds
of their viewers. Magritte s work features supernatural, often unsettling images which play with the
imagination and confuse the mind. As part of the surrealist movement, Magritte s purpose behind
his paintings was to intrigue people, make them think about the subconscious mind, and to blur
the lines between reality and dreams. In his famous painting, L Empire des lumiГЁres, or The
Empire of Light, a bright, blue, daytime sky full of white clouds appears over a darkened street, a
lonely house, and a thick cover of trees, all shown to be under the... Show more content on

The juxtaposition of light and dark in The Empire of Light may represent the contrast of
everyday elements and ideas present in the world around us. As explained by Michael Glover,
night and day are present simultaneously. This is unnerving, the simultaneity of daylight and
darkness. It disturbs us visually and morally. Can light co habit with darkness, good with evil?
Well, yes, man is such a patchwork creature of light and dark, the will to do good, the propensity
to choose evil (Glover, para. 3). At first the main effect this painting has on the observer is
confusion; night and day cannot exist together in the same place at the same time, after all.
After observing it in more detail, though, many symbols and themes begin to arise. Considering
the contrast between light values used, the day and night in this image could represent the
clichГ© symbols of good and evil, or joy and sadness, respectively. Just as both times of day are
present in this painting, so are these emotions and traits present in everyday life; they exist
always and everywhere. By analyzing not only the painting itself, but the title as well, this theme
becomes more apparent. Several versions of its title exist due to translation issues, and many
refer to this piece as The Dominion of Light instead. This could mean that the light portrayed in
this painting is dominating the darkness, because of its placement above the shadow, and, in fact,
it is showing the dominion of light over darkness or purity over corruption. This piece shows the
power that good has over evil, or that joy has over sadness, while portraying both of the latter as
an impenetrable veil of darkness and the former as the bright clarity of the sky. The use of light
sources and contrast between value in The Empire of Light contributes to this theme of light and
dark, purity and wickedness, or joy and sadness. This interpretation also

Walla Wine History

Walla Walla, Washington: Wonderful Wines In The West

It was not long ago when Walla Walla was known for their sweet yellow onions and not much
else. Wine changed all of that. What started in the 1970s as a test to see if grapes liked the same
soil as onions, has now exploded into a fine wine mecca. When Gary Figgins planted the first wine

This sleepy town at the foot of the round and rolling Blue Mountains is quickly becoming one of
North America s premier wine destinations. The effects can be seen even for the casual first time

I could say the second article strengthen the findings of the first by demonstrating the finding in a

John The Baptist Is Celebrated At St. John s Eve
John the Baptist is celebrated at St. John s Eve, which is usually celebrated on the same day as
Midsummer or Litha. In this article we will be delving into the mystery of John the Baptist in
both christianity and paganism. It s speculated wildly on him being based off an old pagan god,
Oannes. Therefore we will be looking at the history of both gods and both religions. We will also
be looking at similarities and inequalities.
John the Baptist and Oannes
John the Baptist baptized people before Jesus did and even Jesus himself. He was born 6 months
before Jesus and a lot of people speculated on him being the Messiah. However, John did never
put himself higher than Jesus, he simply prepared the way. In Mattheus 11, John says, I baptize
you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose
sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing
fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and
burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be
baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you
come to me? Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfull all
righteousness. Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.

List four (4) key success factors for Insel Inc. s MIC Division. Briefly justify your selection of

the obvious key success factor of Insel s MIC Division is customer focus. Generally, it is said that

The suitable performance measure for is the number of customer complaints, which is to determine

Life is Adversity Everyone faces adversity in some point of their life.Adversity will always make
us stronger. Some ways people overcome adversity are by, Identifying the problem, Facing it and
considering all options. One way people overcome adversity is by identifying the problem. An
example of this is from the (article video) of Captain Sullenberger landing the planein the Hudson

geese had hit the plane s engine he had to think what he was going to do and he thought where he

people overcome adversity is by facing it because Cpt. Sullenberger had to face that he had to

Drug Addiction Is A Huge Problem Essay
Over the recent years, we have seen a sharp incline of drug related overdose here in Flordia.
Although we have heard about some new and still developing preventative approaches, treatments,
legislations and the possibility of drug consumption facilities here in Florida addiction is still a
huge problem. Especially with stronger drugs such as fentanyl being used to cut heroinor sold as
heroin. Furthermore, there s a need to address the underlying issues from addictionsuch as
depression, A.D.H.D, and chronic pain. Ultimately addiction can happen to anyone; a person does
not just wake up one day and decide to do drugs. Something happens to them whether its an
accident and the person is prescribed prescription drugs for pain, peer pressure or many other ways
it can happen to anyone. Which is there is a need for strengthening interventions with the aim of

Drug addiction rehabilitation centers are a huge money maker here in the United States. Sadly,
when a user is trying to get clean, the doctors prescribe addicts other drugs to help them detox.
However, how often do these addicts stay off drugs? Even worse, how many die from a drug
overdose because all the treatment just doesn t work? There is a need for strengthening
interventions with the aim of reducing deaths caused by drug overdose in Florida. There is no

Why Is Homework Necessary For Elementary School
Homework Is Not Necessary for Elementary Students
Elementary education is something many people are familiar with. Some may have taught in
elementary schools, researched elementary education, or at the least, attended elementary school.
School work and projects assigned to be completed at home are a large part of primary education,
and most people who have completed grades one through six have experienced homework
themselves, but does familiarity mean necessity? How important is homework in elementary
education? Is it helpful or possibly even harmful? Educators and psychologists have conducted
many studies on homework in elementary education, and it is an important subject (Healy).
Children learn and refine routines and skills related to school in their elementary years (Healy).
Even though homework is often considered a requirement of education, the benefits of homework
for elementary age children are inconclusive, and homework has been shown to degrade young

based off of what was taught in class that day. Educators may also use homework to introduce a

homework can be used to boost students morale and engage their minds (Reilly). The goal is
that this will lead to an increase in positive attitudes to both the topic being taught as well as

Argumentative Essay On Residential Schools
Residential Schools
Where are they taking me, mom?! Help! These were the screams of an Aboriginal child when he
was dragged to a car that drove him away from his family. Aboriginal kids were forcefully
abducted and placed at poorly built and equipped residential schools. Residential schools are a
network of boarding schools for Indigenous peoples. Like a disease, these schools spread so fast
on Canadian land. They were every Indigenous child s nightmare. Kids who attended were
traumatized due to the mental, physical, and sexual abuse they suffered. Canadians felt superior to
Aboriginals which lead them to use their power excessively to civilize these communities. This
issue is considered to be one of the darkest chapters in Canadian history. It has a significant impact
on Aboriginal communities. Indians suffered a loss of culture and identity. This issue violates
various human rights such as; Freedom of language, freedom of culture and religion, freedom of
choice, and the freedom of safety and health. The two groups in this controversy are the aggressors;
Canadian government, and it s churches, and the victims; the aboriginals. The question is, is the
Canadian government doing enough to make it up to those who suffered the ill effects of
residential schools?
In 1876, residential schools became an obligation to every Indian kid. They were forced to say
their last goodbyes to their families. Over 150 000 students were forced to attend these poorly built
and equipped

Chapter 2 Of The Annual Shape Trip-Personal Narrative
It was day 2 of the annual canoe trip that my Boy Scout troop goes on. I was in a kayak because
of a lack of canoes. The day started out with a cold and groggy morning. The scouts ventured out
to find wood to start a fire with, and the adults began to fix breakfast and their morning cup of
coffee. After the boys had gathered enough wood for a fire, and the adults had breakfast
prepared to be cooked, the scouts constructed a roaring fire for everyone to cook their food over.
Breakfast was set to be fish. Since we were without any electronics or cooking devices, we made
hobo packs, which consisted of putting all of our food in an aluminum foil wrap and heating it.
The painstaking wait was over, and we now had a delicious meal to fill our stomachs before
another day on the water.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The day began a slow one. It picked up as time ticked by. Eventually, the time for lunch had
rolled around, so we stopped on an island to have lunch. Slowly, but surely, the entire troop
regrouped at the island and enjoyed a tasty meal of hotdogs and chips. Lunch came to an end, and
everyone s stomachs were full. Once more, we abided by our Scout Motto, and left the island so
we could paddle our way to the end of our endeavour. Just a short distance of nearly a mile from
the island, some heavy rapids awaited our coming. They were something we all had to just deal
with, and figure out by trial and error, the best way to pass through them. A fellow scout of mine,
Ben, decided he wanted to be the first to try his luck in these rapids. Ben was a first year scout,
who had never been on the canoe trip before. Ben was in a kayak as well. I followed closely behind
Ben so that I could be of assistance should anything go

Scarlet Letter Ambiguity
In The Scarlet Letter, sin and guilt represent the theme of morality throughout the entire novel. The
scarlet letter A is the main representation of the protagonist assumed moral ineptitude. Yet there is a
certain amount of vagueness that occurs at her initial appearance that leaves the reader a bit
confused. Nathanial Hawthorne produces a marvelous piece of ambiguity that allows the reader to
question their own idea of how morality is defined. While he works the theme of morality into all
of the characters in the novel, the three main characters Hester Prynne, Chillingworth, and
Dimmesdale are the main focus if the idea of morality in the novel.
Hester Prynne is an adulteress; this is a fact made by an assumption by the reader of the symbol red
letter A on her breast. The first moral question does she deserve this sort of humiliating punishment?
Without more information on the nature of the crime, the absolute answer in the light of the true
human condition would be yes. Nathanial Hawthorne ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His moral character is easily defined when he sets into action his dark, evil plan to torment
Hester and torture Dimmesdale. His moral character is not as harshly judged because the reader
might view him as the victim. His wife has had a baby with another man and her character of
morality has been called into question by Chillingworth. Here the action of his own moral code is
called into question by the two people he tortures, Dimmesdale and Hester. Dimmesdale exclaims to
Hester: We are not, Hester, the worst sinners in the world. There is one worse than even the polluted
priest! That old man s revenge has been blacker than my sin. He has violated, in cold blood, the
sanctity of a human heart (170) and his words shows that Hawthorne continued to circumvent the
moral code throughout the novel by having the characters themselves place the judgment of
immorality on each

Health Information Exchange And The Health Care Field
Health information exchange has become a very important part of today s health care field. It is
used every day, in almost every part of the medical field. Electronic medical records, digital
imaging, e mails, and fax are all used daily. Health information exchange has moved forward the
health care field and helped medical professionals give their patients faster, more efficient and safer
care day to day. In this paper, you will read about the history of the health information exchange, the

While many people believe that health information exchange is a relatively new thing, it has
been around for over four decades. However, in the beginning phases it was nowhere near as
complex as it is now. Sometime in the middle of the 60 s, an early form of a data processing
system was formed and it focuses on clinical data management. This system began to catch on
even though they were nowhere near as sophisticated and or functional as the health records in
today s time. In 1972, at the Regenstrief Institute the first medical record system was created as a
modular system to provide service functions for clinics, laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy (
Structure, Functions, and Activities of a Research Support Informatics Section, 2003). This was a
pilot project in a diabetes clinic and not something they thought would change the face of health
information forever. However, when it was first made it was not attractive to many doctors due to
the high cost but was used mostly by government hospitals since they had the funds to use them. To
this day, the most comprehensive medical records system could be found in the Regenstrief
Medical Records System based in Indianapolis. This records system is mostly in thanks to Clement
McDonald, who is the director of the Regenstrief Institute. In 1991, the Institute of Medicine stated
that by the year 2000, it would be smart for

The Last Discovery Of America Rhetorical Analysis
The Ultimate Persuasion
Persuasion is asserted into many works using the methods of ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos is a
call to authority while claiming a sense of dominance, a method where the author exemplifies his
credentials. Pathos appeals to the emotional side of readers with the hope of coaxing them into
sympathizing with author, therefore succumbing to the ideas presented in the work. The purpose of
logos is to persuade the reader by proving a point logically, accompanied with reason. Various
authors use persuasion in order to inflict their opinions upon readers. In the memoir Brown: The
Last Discovery of America, by Richard Rodriguez, the author employs persuasion with the
rhetorical features of ethos, pathos and logos in order to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rodriguez demonstrates this rhetorical style through the use of pity throughout the memoir. He
attempts to pull the reader into complying with his conclusions through the use of pity in his
stories, especially with racial incidents. Claiming that he grew up wanting to be white,
Rodriguez uses his race and the desire of wanting to be colorless as a way to generate pity from
the reader (140). Using the comparison of young kids picking sides, he expresses that brown
was like the skinny or fat kids left over after the team captains chose sides. You take the rest my
cue to wander away to the sidelines, to wander away (5). Rodriguez tries to fabricate pity and
sympathy from the reader by expressing a story of heartache, and comparing the atrocious
classifications of race to innocent children picking teams. Not only does Rodrigues use the pity
card when talking about his race but also with his lifestyle and social stature. Reaching out to the
audience in his memoir, Rodriguez asks does anybody know what I m talking about? Ah, me. I
am alone in my brown study. I can say anything I like. Nobody listens (38). With this remark,
Richard tries to portray himself as an outsider or an outcaste. People empathize with outcastes and
usually do what they are capable of in pursuance of making the loner feel accepted. He uses pathos
to spawn pity

wrong. Casciana loved her sister more than anything, except she hated that their motherNicole
Marie Holden would always believe Syria over Casciana never really giving her the benefit of the

San Diego Film Festival The 16th annual film festival was by far the most consistent, well
organized festival I have ever attended. It was interesting to see a community of filmmakers come
together and share their experiences here in San Diego. With it being my first film festival to ever
attend, I was able to grasp and get a taste as to what the reality of filmmaking is through these
independent filmmakers eyes. Targeting mainly the Asian/ Asian American community, filmmakers
where able to screen their creativity into the big screen and reach a more broad audience. Having
the opportunity attend Dr. Ken Leong s panel at the Ultra Star opened my knowledge as to what a

To begin with, the audience was predominantly Asian/Asian American whom did not have to use
the subtitles at all while I on the other hand, had to continuously follow along with the film while
also trying to keep up with the subtitles. It was very captivating to observe the comedic scenes in
the movie because people who were able to share the language with the film got the joke right
away during the scene, while I found myself laughing a little bit after or at things that other people
in the audience might have not find if hilarious at all. After this particular screening, once
everyone was exiting the theatre the majority of people being Asian American looked at me in a
surprised way along with my friends. It was not necessarily done with a bad intention but one of
the persons whom attended the screening and was also in charge of working the film festival asked
me what my experience was being non Asian and coming out to these events. In my honest opinion,
it changed the way I perceived Asian/Asian Americans. It changed my opinions and thoughts
entirely because it gave me a chance to have a taste of their culture and what they are really

Mood Disorders Video Analysis
For this week s reflection assignment, I chose a video titled Mood disorders: Major depressive
disorder, and bipolar Type 1. I chose this video because several family members of mine have
(had) depression, suicidal ideation, and a few others. The video was provided by way of
youtube.com, and was uploaded on 14 Feb 15 by Stomp on Step 1. It features Brian McDaniel
as the narrator of the video. The video begins with a stagnant introduction by Mr. McDaniel, and
explains this video is covering the topic of mood disorders. The common definition of mood
disorder is given, a collection of psychiatric conditions that involve a pervasive distortion of one s
emotional state. He also notes that everyone has normal, periodic changes, and this common
occurrence. What makes mood disorders is the extreme changes unrelated to a person s
circumstances. There are more often then not a person will have a near normal affect in between
manic episodes. A normal mood of neither positive or negative is known as euthymia (neutral).
Mood can be classified as happy, or sad on the opposite spectrum. Mr. McDaniel has am inforgraph

professional, and they add the numbers up. Based of what those numbers are, we are often
thought of being in such a state described by criteria. I m not sure it is the exact same thing, but I

The Importance Of Chemical Engineering
1.Engineering is the application of mathematics and scientific principles to better or improve life.
2.There are many different types of engineering professions. Some branches of engineering are the
oldest recorded in history. A engineer is a person who is trained in and uses technological and
scientific knowledge to solve practical problems. Engineers research, develop, design, supervise,
manage, sales, and present the use of new products to prospective customers. Everything but nature
has been designed by a engineer.
3.The four major fields of engineering are chemical, civil, electrical, and mechanical. Chemical
engineering applies scientifically the principles of chemistry, physics, and engineering to design an
operation of plants for the production of materials that undergo chemical changes during their
processing. Responsible for new and improved products and processes such as, new fuels for
rockets, reactors and booster propulstation; also used for medicines, vaccines, serum, plasma,
plastics, synthetics, and textiles. Many problems can occur during these projects that can cause
injury. Civil engineering plans, designs, and supervises the construction of facilities in both the
public and private sectors. Projects vary widely in nature, size, and scope: space satellites, launch
facilities, offshore structures, bridges, buildings, highways, transit systems, dams, airports,
irrigation projects, tunnels, treatment and distribution facilities for water, collection

Advanced Technology In The Byzantine Empire
The Byzantine Empire was one of the many great nations in human history. The Byzantine empire
was formed in 330 A.D when Constantine moved the Roman Empire capital from Rome to the
Greek city of Byzantium, in what is now modern day Turkey. Constantine eventually changed the
name of the capital city to Constantinople. Constantinople remained the capital of the empire for
the rest of its days. The movement of the capital, however, led to the division of the Roman Empire
into Western and Eastern Rome. Although the west fell, the east survived and eventually became
the Byzantine empire, which would last for hundreds of years. A combination of advanced
technology, specialized workers, complex institutions, advanced cities, and record keeping made the
Byzantine empire one of the leading civilizations of its time.
The first aspect that defines a civilization is having advanced technology. Many of these
technologies are portrayed in the city of Constantinople in its architecture and the city s defense.
One example of these defensive technologies was the use of defensive chains in several
waterways, such as the Golden Horn. These incredibly sturdy chains were set at the mouth of the
waterways in order to prevent enemy ships from sailing through the passages. Towers were another
example of defensive technology built along the city s outer walls. These towers helped to create
stability in the walls and were excellent lookout posts and great spots for archers to mount during
an invasion

Global Financial Crisis And Its Impact On Economic Policy...
Financialisation is the process in which financial institutions/markets increase in size and gain
greater influence over economic policy and outcomes (Palley, 2007).Another link to
financialisation is high degree of leverage. This is because with leverage, you can get a loan for
9/10s of the money, so you only need a small portion, and you are able to make lots of profit.
Leverage is linked to financialisation in a sense that if it works, you get lots of profit with a
working system, however if it doesn t work, then you can lose lots of money, and in high
degrees of leverage, you can be losing lots of money by the investment not working out, and
someone then has to pay off the loaned money. In this essay, I will be analysing whether or not
financialisation was the main cause of the 2008 global financial crisis, or if there were other
factors involved in the great recession. I will be arguing that financialisation was a cause of the
crash, but because it was aided by other factors, it is not the sole reason behind the collapse. The
points that I will be making in my argument will be in relation to the financial crisis in the context
of financialisation, talking about market deregulation and subprime mortgages. The second point
that I will make will be about the greed of the CEOs on Wall Street, and their irresponsibility when
it comes to the money of others. The final point that I will be making will be about the
irresponsibility on behalf of the regulators, and how they

A Summary On The Sunset Manicure
Kleancolor Metallics sunset manicure.
This is the sister manicure to my Kleancolor purple/ blue peacock. These metallic polishes,
simply named Metallic Orange and Metallic Yellow , apply as smoothly and easily as the blue
and purple. The consistency was the same, thick, but not too thick. These polishes are 2 coaters,
but they go on reasonably opaque with the first coat. Meaning if you re short on time, you could get
away with a few thick swipes. Here I used the same gradient technique, applying one coat of the
yellow polish and gradually blending yellow to orange. I sponged on a bit of Sally Hansen s
Copper Penny to the tips to give the orange polish a bit of sparkle. You know I love to sparkle!
Gradient tutorial: For this tutorial I used colors that obviously don t go together so that you can see
how to make a seamless blend.
[use purple and green, one thick and dark, the other thinner and light.]
First step: After you apply your base coat, your first color coat should ordinarily be the lightest of
the polishes you ve chosen for your gradient. I say usually because there are plenty of times when
you might want to use a darker base color and sponge a lighter color over it. Since this is a basic
tutorial, however, I ll keep it simple.
[pic of nails with base color]
While you re waiting for that coat of color to dry, I suggest applying a latex type coating or a
homemade glue mix to the skin around your nails. You could use tape also.

Defining Racism
February 22, 2011
Professor Harris
Response Paper: Defining Racism
In this article by Beverly Daniel Tatum, she uses her various life experiences to show the issues that
come along with attempting to define racism in America. There are several external issues that come
not only from defining racism, but with separating racism from prejudice. In dispelling
preconceived notions that these two words are interchangeable, Tatum makes several distinctions in
the meaning and application of the two words in everyday life. Before going further into the
separating factors of the two words, Tatum discusses how unintentional our prejudices can be.
Throughout her article, Tatum... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to her, prejudice is an inescapable product of the racist soceity in America. She goes on
to further explain the evolution of internalized oppression, which is when members of stereotyped
groups internalizes and perpetuates the stereotyped categories of his or her group. In addressing
the issue of intenalized oppression, Tatum gives some responsibility for the state of racism to the
very people who suffer from it.
In the article, Tatum uses the definition of racism that is given by David Wellman in his book
Portraits of White Racism, which says that racism is a system of advantage based on race
(Tatum, 1997). This definition is something that I found to be very interesting. In many cases,
racism is not defined to include the advatages that come from its existance. Instead racism is seen
as a singular act, and never as a wholistic system that subtly disadvantages a specific group of
people. When discussing how to end racism, no one ever gives solutions to erradicate the
subleminal and covert racism that permeates every system from education to healthcare, because
that would shoot down the ideal that in America is an equal and fair place for achieving one s
dreams.
In the last section of her article, Tatum address whether or not racism is exclusive to Whites or
whether it is applicable to all people regardless of race. In this section, she is very specific is
stating that the

  • 2. Harry Harlow Research Papers The Well of Despair Pragya Chaturvedi Piedmont Governor s School for Mathematics, Science, and Technology The Well of Despair Harry Harlow conducted experiments on rhesus monkeys to research the nature of maternal love ( Harry Harlow, 2017). He used maternal deprivation and social isolation experiments to do so. The first experiment he conducted was to find out what kind of maternal care the monkeys needed to be normal; Harlow raised the infant monkeys with artificial mothers to see how different types of mothers would affect the monkeys growth and reaction. He used a variety of mothers to research the different preferences, and he thought that the ideal mother was a mother, soft, warm, and tender, a mother with infinite patience, a mother available 24 hours a day (Slater, 2008, n.pag.). He used two mothers in this experiment: one was made out of terrycloth and the other one was made out of wire ( Harry Harlow, 2017). The wire mother provided the monkeys with the materials the babies needed to survive, like milk and food. On ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He used equipment like the rape rack, iron maidens, and the well of despair which caused emotional trauma to the infants ( Harry Harlow, 2017). Rape rack was a forced mating device; the mothers who had their baby using this device were abusive to their children. These mothers were unable to form any kind of bond to their children because they were deprived of that themselves. Iron maidens were the surrogate mothers that tormented the monkeys by shooting sharp spikes, and cold air that was so forceful that the monkeys were thrown across the cages, clinging and screaming (Slater, 2004). Lastly, well of despair was where the monkeys were left in dark chambers for up to a year ( Harry Harlow, 2017). The infants that were left in isolation were very disturbed. Harlow tried very hard to reverse the depression using multiple kinds of therapy, but they all failed to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Cabaret Movie Comparison After watching both of the films for this week I definitely noticed a difference in the film narratives due to musical numbers and how they were integrated. While watching 42nd Street, the musical numbers were quite confusing to me. I struggled to understand how they provided context to the film. As I did not see how they fit within the storyline of the films. I also believe the disconnection between the numbers and the filmmade me question, the films event s and I thought I misunderstood certain moments in the film because the musical numbers did not make sense. I also did not enjoy the fact that during the numbers themselves there was dialogue going on and the focus shifted during the number. I think this lessened the impact of the number... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was as if the focus was the music numbers opposed to the films, which in my opinion is the best part of a musical. I enjoyed watching the numbers and seeing the elaborate costumes and details that were put into them. Furthermore, in Cabaret, one could tell that the music numbers really fit in with the film and provided more insight into what was going on. A good example of this was the during the musical number Maybe This Time sung by Sally which demonstrated her relationship with Brian and how it has evolved. Their relationship turned into more than a friendship and as the number goes on Sally sings of the hope she has of this relationship being the real deal and withstanding the test of time.Through this musical number the audience is able to understood how Sally is feeling without the use of any actual dialogue. I do believe there is some relation between the context of integration/non integration and the contexts in which the films were made. 42nd Street was created during the Great Depression and it seems as if there was some caution in terms of the film was made. It seems as if the events of the film were more so on the safe side and no feathers were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not just to the actual words that they are saying but also to the hidden language that is often referred to as body language . Listening this is an active process. It involves the use of many of our senses not just hearing the obvious one. What tone of voice are they using? What expressions are on their face? What are the surroundings like in which the conversation is taking place? A place of peace or a place of conflict? How many individuals are in the room? We need to have a dialogue and not a monologue. Too often we are not really listening to the other person but formulating our own ideas in our mind. Listening is an unselfish act, as we are putting the needs of another person above our own. We are letting them know that they truly matter; that we value their time and ideas, which they are sharing with us. In an ideal situation we will both benefit from the conversation. The store that I will be assessing is the Bluewater store. I will attempt to identify the methods and strategies that are used by the company when promoting and trying to increase the sales of the Tommy Denim range of jeans and clothing, I shall then attempt to develop my own, better strategies. People want discrete labels. Also the Tommy Hilfiger range of clothing is associated more with the older, more mature and classic age group of people and so this image of the brand needs to be overcome. * Strong competition from more popular brands. Being situated in a shopping complex, there are many other shops that provide similar, alternative denim products. Customers often opt for these alternatives because they are cheaper or are accustomed with a better brand name. The Role Of Ma Joad In The Grapes Of Wrath The Climbing Vines of Society John Steinbeck s novel leaves writers with a fluctuation of ranging emotions, from hope and encouragement to hate and frustration. There is almost absolutely no doubt that The Grapes of Wrath encompasses the will to survive and hold onto one s family. Through Steinbeck s characters, a reader can find similar identities and understand the risks taken according to society s values and laws. Awareness of the decade will also broaden the perspective of the actions taken by these real life characters. While the audience may feel the passionate rage from the injustice shown to the Joad family by the writer along with many other families. • 9. Macbeth Minor Characters William Shakespeare is known for his amazing use of minor characters to display themes and be assets to whatever the major character is going through. In the process, Shakespeare generates major interest from the readers for these minor characters. One may ask, why do I feel so strongly for these characters? The answer cannot be any clearer; it is because they are presented in a major manner even though they are minor and in the short amount of time they are seen in the play, they make themselves stick to the readers. A prime example of this rare capability is presented in Shakespeare s Macbeth. In this tragedy, Macduff s family is killed in cold blood. She asks What had he done to make him fly the land. (IV.ii.1) This allows one to believe that she thinks the only way Macduff would leave is if he did something wrong. Lady Macduff then accuses Macduff of not loving him. The anger, hurt, and feelings of betrayal behind the words of Lady Macduff immediately makes the audience enamored and captivated by her presence and yearn for her to find out the truth; that Macduff is not a traitor, but a hero, trying to save the face of the crown. In the situation of Macduff s son, he s confused as to whether his father is a traitor or not and he denies his father s death twice during this scene. Once when his mother insists and a second time, shouting to the second murderer Thou liest though shag haired villain! The Queens in Beowulf are proven to be good or have acceptable behavior if they are peace weavers, play the role as hostess in the mead hall, and give gifts to her warriors. There were also examples of the Queens acting diplomatically and actively engaging in political affairs. All of these traits seem to be praiseworthy in the tale of Beowulf, making it likely that these traits were also praiseworthy for the actual Queens of the early Germanic people. Hollywood moviemakers focus on relatable, real life possible events, which they dramatize and turn into big hit blockbusters. In order to categorize their many productions, they use the notion of genre and create their own rules /qualifications to be able to classify movies as such. This categorization even persists within the movies themselves, especially within the extremely popular teen girl genre. Teen girl films focus primarily on the stereotypical junior high/high school life of an adolescent female. Thus, the narrative of the films must contain specific rules and character types that encompass high school life. To make a real seller, the most often used character type is the so called mean or popular girl in a social hierarchy based school. In order to be identified as the mean and popular girl character, one must be physically attractive, judgmental/cruel, and be the center of attention. To understand this archetypal character type it is best to examine the two most infamous popular girls in the industry, Regina George, and Kate Sanders. Although, Regina George and Kate Sanders exist in two very distinct narratives, their personality traits are not at all different or unique. Interestingly, since The Lizzie McGuireMovie was produced before Mean Girls, Kate Sanders ends up being the first typical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Of the utmost security concern is the protection of the root account. The root account allows a user absolute control of the system, including the ability to alter practically every aspect of the systems, from individual files to installed programs. Indeed, an entry in Wikipedia.com notes, that a UNIX administrator should be much like Clark Kent, only using the root account, or becoming Superman, when absolutely necessary, lest the security of the account be compromised (2006). Ultimately, this implementation represents a near surefire way to protect the system against many internal and external threats. By ensuring regularly scheduled root account password changes and ensuring the passwords are strong, the cons noted previously should be relatively easy to avoid. File system security is also very important regardless of the UNIX implementation. UNIX files system security generally allows access permissions to be granted to various defined users and groups. UNIX also contains an access right flag know as the sticky bit . The sticky bit can be used to allow users and groups write access to certain directories within the system. Similarly, the sticky bit can be used by a user to disallow other users with access to the same directory to alter the contents of the file. The file can only be altered by the file owner, the directory owner, and the root account (linuxdevcenter.com, 2006). This particular element allows for a great deal of control ... Magritte s work features supernatural, often unsettling images which play with the imagination and confuse the mind. As part of the surrealist movement, Magritte s purpose behind his paintings was to intrigue people, make them think about the subconscious mind, and to blur the lines between reality and dreams. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The juxtaposition of light and dark in The Empire of Light may represent the contrast of everyday elements and ideas present in the world around us. As explained by Michael Glover, night and day are present simultaneously. This is unnerving, the simultaneity of daylight and darkness. It disturbs us visually and morally. Can light co habit with darkness, good with evil? Well, yes, man is such a patchwork creature of light and dark, the will to do good, the propensity to choose evil (Glover, para. 3). At first the main effect this painting has on the observer is confusion; night and day cannot exist together in the same place at the same time, after all. After observing it in more detail, though, many symbols and themes begin to arise. Considering the contrast between light values used, the day and night in this image could represent the clichГ© symbols of good and evil, or joy and sadness, respectively. Just as both times of day are present in this painting, so are these emotions and traits present in everyday life; they exist always and everywhere. By analyzing not only the painting itself, but the title as well, this theme becomes more apparent. Several versions of its title exist due to translation issues, and many refer to this piece as The Dominion of Light instead. This could mean that the light portrayed in this painting is dominating the darkness, because of its placement above the shadow, and, in fact, it is showing the dominion of light over darkness or purity over corruption. This piece shows the power that good has over evil, or that joy has over sadness, while portraying both of the latter as an impenetrable veil of darkness and the former as the bright clarity of the sky. The use of light sources and contrast between value in The Empire of Light contributes to this theme of light and dark, purity and wickedness, or joy and sadness. This interpretation also ... In this article we will be delving into the mystery of John the Baptist in both christianity and paganism. It s speculated wildly on him being based off an old pagan god, Oannes. Therefore we will be looking at the history of both gods and both religions. We will also be looking at similarities and inequalities. John the Baptist and Oannes John the Baptist baptized people before Jesus did and even Jesus himself. He was born 6 months before Jesus and a lot of people speculated on him being the Messiah. However, John did never put himself higher than Jesus, he simply prepared the way. In Mattheus 11, John says, I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire. The Byzantine empire was formed in 330 A.D when Constantine moved the Roman Empire capital from Rome to the Greek city of Byzantium, in what is now modern day Turkey. Constantine eventually changed the name of the capital city to Constantinople. Constantinople remained the capital of the empire for the rest of its days. The movement of the capital, however, led to the division of the Roman Empire into Western and Eastern Rome. Although the west fell, the east survived and eventually became the Byzantine empire, which would last for hundreds of years. A combination of advanced technology, specialized workers, complex institutions, advanced cities, and record keeping made the Byzantine empire one of the leading civilizations of its time. The first aspect that defines a civilization is having advanced technology. Many of these technologies are portrayed in the city of Constantinople in its architecture and the city s defense. One example of these defensive technologies was the use of defensive chains in several waterways, such as the Golden Horn. These incredibly sturdy chains were set at the mouth of the waterways in order to prevent enemy ships from sailing through the passages. Financialisation is the process in which financial institutions/markets increase in size and gain greater influence over economic policy and outcomes (Palley, 2007).Another link to financialisation is high degree of leverage. This is because with leverage, you can get a loan for 9/10s of the money, so you only need a small portion, and you are able to make lots of profit. Leverage is linked to financialisation in a sense that if it works, you get lots of profit with a working system, however if it doesn t work, then you can lose lots of money, and in high degrees of leverage, you can be losing lots of money by the investment not working out, and someone then has to pay off the loaned money.
