Did You Know...
Authenticity-is defined as, something that is real and genuine
The character of your story- is, who inhabits your story.
Your character must be authentic.
Authenticity makes a story powerful and memorable.
It can be seen, heard & felt by the character & the reader
Point of View
This character is who the story is about. S(he) will use the words “I” . S(he)
only knows the thoughts & feelings of one person, it’s self. This is termed 1st
person POV.
This character is referred to as “you”. This POV knows the thoughts and
actions of more than one character, including the main character. We call this
the 2nd person POV.
The 3rd POV knows all & sees all.
*In our life which POV do we possess? Which would you want to possess.
Why? What would be the benefits and drawbacks of each one?
Drawing in your Audience
For a story to be great there must be conflict.
The conflict can be within the mind or life of a character, and even between
characters.
When describing the conflicts use emotion. The reader must feel the pain,
the conflict, the anger, the rejection.
Describe the character’s body language in response to the conflict.
Use strong verbs in these descriptions.
Lets try a few
Choose the best of the two:
He knew she wouldn’t call, but he needed her to, he just wanted to say “ I
love you” one more time.
The furrow between his brows pulsed with pain. His sleepless night had been a
long and agonising one. As he paced the floor he said, once again between
clenched teeth,“she’s just gotta call.” He had to have the chance to convince
her he loved her. He had to make her believe him; without her he couldn’t
stay in this town. She knew it as well as he did.
Your turn
The penny dropped to the ground. “That penny will buy a
hot roll from the bakery”, she thought. She couldn’t
decide if she should pick it up.
Using your journal, please write a more detailed passage. Bring in conflict,
emotion and descriptive language and watch it flourish.
Breath life into it!
Conflict
I reside in her heart , yet I live alone
in the shadowed past -in the uncertain future
I am torn -My heart is peaceful
my spirit fearful and confused conflict within
I am all at once freed by love
but I am imprisoned none- the -less
I wander aimlessly slowly approaching
mankind's final destination
once there ,will my restless soul- finally find its peace
By Angela Davis
Writing Challenge
Think of a story___________ based on an idea, experience, dream, or piece of art.
Step 1-Write 120-150 words focusing on emotional descriptions to let reader feel your writing. Additionally choose a
specific theme; love, courage, good vs evil revenge and drive your readers to it through conversations between your
character, or dialogue within your subject’s mind.
Step 2-Reread. Add or change where you think can or should in order to produce excellent work. Each time you open your
journal indicate it with a date stamp. Reread your work several times (2-3) before moving on to the next step.
Step 3-Let it rest
Step 4- Reread and make any final changes to your short story or poem.
Step 5- present it to your writing circle at ESTEAM

Creative Writing - Thursday

  • 1. Welcome Back! Please grab your writing journal, & your note taking tools
  • 2. Checking In... How did your writing assignment go? What were your successes? What were your challenges? Did you find choosing a theme and weaving into your writing liberating or challenging?
  • 3. Home Writing Challenge Exchange Looking for feedback to Challenge us to excellence
  • 4. Did You Know... Authenticity-is defined as, something that is real and genuine The character of your story- is, who inhabits your story. Your character must be authentic. Authenticity makes a story powerful and memorable. It can be seen, heard & felt by the character & the reader
  • 5. Point of View This character is who the story is about. S(he) will use the words “I” . S(he) only knows the thoughts & feelings of one person, it’s self. This is termed 1st person POV. This character is referred to as “you”. This POV knows the thoughts and actions of more than one character, including the main character. We call this the 2nd person POV. The 3rd POV knows all & sees all. *In our life which POV do we possess? Which would you want to possess. Why? What would be the benefits and drawbacks of each one?
  • 6. Drawing in your Audience For a story to be great there must be conflict. The conflict can be within the mind or life of a character, and even between characters. When describing the conflicts use emotion. The reader must feel the pain, the conflict, the anger, the rejection. Describe the character’s body language in response to the conflict. Use strong verbs in these descriptions.
