Author’s Point of View
Point of View
○Point of view is the
perspective used to
tell a story.
First Person: Story is told from
the point of view of a character.
The following
words are used:
I
Me
My
Us
We
Our
My joy was evident as I
jumped off the diving
board.
First Person Advantages
• Readers see events
from character’s point
of view.
• Readers understand
characters better.
Ashes, I can still hear the fight. It was a
couple of month before the final break up. I
was in bed allegedly asleep , when they
went at it.
Third Person: A narrator is telling
the story.
The following words
are used:
He
She
They
Them
Her
His
The blood pooled up
on his knee after his
fall from the second
story.
Third Person Advantages
``There are more things to find out
about in this house,'' he said to himself,
``than all my family could find out in
all their lives. I shall certainly stay and
find out.''
• Readers are able to see the thoughts of
all characters.
Second Person: The author is
speaking to the reader. Directions
The following words
are used:
You
Your
Yours
Yourself
When writing literary
responses be sure you use
appropriate literary terms:
conflict, resolution,
protagonist, antagonist,
plot…
Second person point
of view uses “you”
and presents
commands.
I always thought he went back there,
but now I don’t know. There was
some talk about him, tales, that
come out after what happened to
my husband. It’s something runs in
the blood, they say, and it may
never come out, but if it does, it’s
the change of the moon that does it.
First Person Second Person Third Person
She led him down the hall to the front door
and opened it. “Good-night! Behave yourself,
boy!” she said, looking out into the street.
The boy wanted to say something else other
than “Thank you, m’am” to Mrs. Luella Bates
Washington Jones, but he couldn’t do so as he
turned at the barren stoop and looked back at
the large woman in the door. He barely
managed to say “Thank you” before she shut
the door. And he never saw her again.
○
First Person Second Person Third Person
What point of view is used?
○ When you are reading a passage and you
come across a word that you do not know,
you should use context clues to help you
define the word. Context clues help you
figure out the definitions of unfamiliar words.
Become a detective and search for the words
that will help you define the unfamiliar word.
Sometimes the definition is right there in the
sentence. You should never skip over a word
you do not know. Good readers take the time
to understand what they are reading!
First Person Second Person Third Person
What is the Point of View in
your stories?
Go through the stories that you are
writing literary responses and identify
the point of view for each.
What clues did you use to determine
the Point of View?
