Introduction
Language is a complex system of communication that
used by human beings. It needs a high of human capacity for
acquiring and capability in order to use it. As stated by
Ferdinand de Saussure in the article Wittgenstein & the
Importance of Language Games ,“ all words acted as signs
and had two components; signifiers and the signified. For
the word ‘cat’, the word ‘cat’ is the signifier and the
description, ‘a furry animal with four legs and a tail,’ is the
signified”. He claimed that, language is only understood
when everyone able to recognizes the same signifiers and the
signified.
Meaning & Definition:
A language game (also called secret language,
ludling, or argot) is a system of manipulating spoken
words to render them incomprehensible to the
untrained ear.
Language games are used primarily by groups
attempting to conceal their conversations from others.
Some common examples are Pig Latin;
the Gibberish family, prevalent in the United States and
Sweden; and Verlan, spoken in France.
There are different language games namely:
• Vocabulary games
• Conversational games
• Oral games
• Riddles
• Listening games
• Grammar games
• Writing games
• Reading games
• Spelling games
• Speaking
Importance:
 “Games should have an aim”. They are used to
motivate students, not only for fun.
 Games should focus on the use of language. By their
means students have to learn, practice, or refresh
language components
The content should be appropriate. It should fit the
curriculum from all points of view and not to promote
wrong values (e.g. Violence).
Games should be technically easy to use in the
classroom.
Games should be in accordance with student’s age
and level of knowledge.
Games should keep all of the student interested.
Benefits of Language Games:
1. Enjoyable method of learning language.
2. Help to improve vocabulary.
3. Increase motivation for learning language.
4. They promote communication in English language.
5. They provide meaningful situations for practicing language.
6. Reduce anxiety related to learning and making errors.
7. Encourage spontaneous use of English language.
8. Integrate different linguistic skills.
9. Increase learner participation in class.
Advantages:
Games are a welcome break from the usual routine of
the language class.
Learning a language requires a great deal of effort.
Games help students to make and sustain the effort of
learning;
 They encourage students to interact and
communicate;
They create a meaningful context for language use;
 Games involve students in active learning;
 They can encourage students to draw on analysis,
synthesis, evaluation;
Disadvantages:
Some students may think games are a waste of time
and immature. Their body language and facial
expression will make this clear.
One student may be too competitive and make other
students uncomfortable.
Not all students may understand the game which can
cause frustration.
Someone can be a ‘bad loser’.
You spend ages planning a game, but the general class
vibe is: no games today
Conclusion:
It is now more apparent that the teaching of
vocabulary can be supported effectively by using language
games. Since teaching is developing art, which requires
innovative and creative ideas to enrich its effectiveness; one
should not hesitate to use language games in classrooms
Thank You
