3 Tips for a Successful
              Classroom
1. Establish High Expectations for
     Academic Achievement

 Communicate to all students that you
 expect them to succeed. Reinforce
 your expectations by displaying
 excellent work samples around your
 class, on your website, and in your
 parent newsletter.
2. Establish Clear Expectations
for Classroom Behavior

Clearly enumerate class policies to
students and parents from the
beginning of the school year to
eliminate any misunderstanding
about what is and what is not
acceptable. Begin each day with a
quick reminder about your
expectations and give reminders as
needed.
3. Deal with Disruptions with as
   Little Interruption as Possible
It is imperative to deal with disruptions
 immediately and with as little interruption
 to instruction as possible. If students
 conduct private conversations during
 class time, ask one of them a question to
 redirect their attention or place yourself in
 their vicinity. Most importantly,
 acknowledge and reward students who
 demonstrate appropriate behavior to
 encourage others to follow suit.

• Areas of the classroom are
  clearly defined with
  visual/structural parameters
• Each learning environment has
  a clear purpose or function
• Distractions are minimized in
  the direct instruction and
  independent work area areas

  maximize focus on task or person
• Materials needed for activities are in
  appropriate places in the classroom where
  students can access them easily
• Materials are clearly marked with visuals
  for all students to see
• Materials are age and developmentally
  appropriate for the students
• Adaptations are made to materials where
  appropriate to maximize student success

  • 2. 3 Tips for a Successful Classroom 1. Establish High Expectations for Academic Achievement Communicate to all students that you expect them to succeed. Reinforce your expectations by displaying excellent work samples around your class, on your website, and in your parent newsletter.
  • 3. 2. Establish Clear Expectations for Classroom Behavior Clearly enumerate class policies to students and parents from the beginning of the school year to eliminate any misunderstanding about what is and what is not acceptable. Begin each day with a quick reminder about your expectations and give reminders as needed.
  • 4. 3. Deal with Disruptions with as Little Interruption as Possible It is imperative to deal with disruptions immediately and with as little interruption to instruction as possible. If students conduct private conversations during class time, ask one of them a question to redirect their attention or place yourself in their vicinity. Most importantly, acknowledge and reward students who demonstrate appropriate behavior to encourage others to follow suit.
  • 5. Classroom Environment Proactive Considerations • Areas of the classroom are clearly defined with visual/structural parameters • Each learning environment has a clear purpose or function • Distractions are minimized in the direct instruction and independent work area areas

Classroom Environment Proactive Considerations • Students are seated and positioned to maximize focus on task or person • Materials needed for activities are in appropriate places in the classroom where students can access them easily • Materials are clearly marked with visuals for all students to see • Materials are age and developmentally appropriate for the students • Adaptations are made to materials where appropriate to maximize student success
