Filter can be used to separate ‘contributors’
from ‘workers’
Defining work in terms of “challenge-response
cycles” is the filter we can use to separate ‘workers’ from
‘contributors’. Very often you will find that in service-based
organizations, people are extremely process-oriented.
A contributor, will say, “I am here to actually help
you and make a difference at the level of your outcomes. So,
let me try and do whatever is within my power to get the job
done.” This is the difference between a process-worker and a
contributor.
Qualities-Contributor should posses
She is believing that background can make the
person different than anyone else. Schools, teachers,
parents, friends, colleagues, classmates and
environment play vital role in building personality of
individual. Contributor is the one who can work beyond
their duty when needed. According to her individual can
make difference in organization if he/she is a real
contributor. Contributor usually have passions, high
tolerance power, enthusiasm and vibrant personality
who can be ideal to anyone.
Contributors ‘make things happen’ +
the ‘right way’- According to her
• Contributors have both human values as well as
functional effectiveness – They get the job done, but
also do it the ‘right way’. A person, who has values but
no effectiveness, is not useful. A person, who is very
effective but doesn’t have values, is a very dangerous
person.
• They have an attitude of ‘creating value’ in the job –
“When I go there, what value am I creating? Am I just
‘doing’ or am I ‘creating value’?” That kind of question
that comes to their mind.
Human values - Contributors demonstrate
They have integrity in their actions. Integrity
also includes being trustworthy. Saying that you will not be in
time, you are communicating, “I am not trustworthy”, “I may
not keep my word”. Trustworthiness doesn’t mean honesty
alone, it also means being able to communicate that I will get
the job done – “What I promise, I will do”. That is also part of
trust.
There is ‘win-win thinking’ – not only do I
win, others also win. For example, some employees take
leave just before a crucial assignment or project. This shows
that they are interested in their ‘win’ alone, not in the ‘win’ for
the organization as well. Contributors, have this ‘win-win’
orientation – they act such that they win, as well as others
win.
Contributors are ‘design’ oriented
By contributor we mean someone who
keeps the goals of the organization at the center and still
remains creative.
It is not a person who decides to be so
creative that he steps out of bounds and questions
everything – ending up with no strategy. Nor is it someone
who is a blind follower and takes no initiative.
Contributors seem to be those who are
outcome oriented. They are asking where does our
company want to go, and what must happen. They don’t
focus on task or process.
A Contributor defines himself differently
from others
If I define myself in terms of ‘what I do’, it locks me up into
structures, hierarchies; into what the world is defining.
While if I start defining myself at a deeper level, in terms
of ‘who am I’, I am able to define myself in ways that give
me meaning, satisfaction, and fulfillment.
In fact, so much of life goes in trying to handle the ‘what I
do’ dimension, that very little time is spent in the ‘who am
I’ dimension of existence.
All fulfillment begins only when I acknowledge this
dimension. Otherwise, there is only acquisition.
A Contributor defines himself differently
from others
To become a Contributor …
•There is a need to shift from ‘static’ thinking practices to
‘dynamic’ thinking practices
•Keep ‘vision’ at the center, not ‘activity’
•3 shifts that enable you to move from ‘performing’ to
‘contributing’

  • 7. Filter can be used to separate ‘contributors’ from ‘workers’ Defining work in terms of “challenge-response cycles” is the filter we can use to separate ‘workers’ from ‘contributors’. Very often you will find that in service-based organizations, people are extremely process-oriented. A contributor, will say, “I am here to actually help you and make a difference at the level of your outcomes. So, let me try and do whatever is within my power to get the job done.” This is the difference between a process-worker and a contributor.
  • 8. Qualities-Contributor should posses She is believing that background can make the person different than anyone else. Schools, teachers, parents, friends, colleagues, classmates and environment play vital role in building personality of individual. Contributor is the one who can work beyond their duty when needed. According to her individual can make difference in organization if he/she is a real contributor. Contributor usually have passions, high tolerance power, enthusiasm and vibrant personality who can be ideal to anyone.
  • 9. Contributors ‘make things happen’ + the ‘right way’- According to her • Contributors have both human values as well as functional effectiveness – They get the job done, but also do it the ‘right way’. A person, who has values but no effectiveness, is not useful. A person, who is very effective but doesn’t have values, is a very dangerous person. • They have an attitude of ‘creating value’ in the job – “When I go there, what value am I creating? Am I just ‘doing’ or am I ‘creating value’?” That kind of question that comes to their mind.
  • 10. Human values - Contributors demonstrate They have integrity in their actions. Integrity also includes being trustworthy. Saying that you will not be in time, you are communicating, “I am not trustworthy”, “I may not keep my word”. Trustworthiness doesn’t mean honesty alone, it also means being able to communicate that I will get the job done – “What I promise, I will do”. That is also part of trust. There is ‘win-win thinking’ – not only do I win, others also win. For example, some employees take leave just before a crucial assignment or project. This shows that they are interested in their ‘win’ alone, not in the ‘win’ for the organization as well. Contributors, have this ‘win-win’ orientation – they act such that they win, as well as others win.
  • 11. Contributors are ‘design’ oriented By contributor we mean someone who keeps the goals of the organization at the center and still remains creative. It is not a person who decides to be so creative that he steps out of bounds and questions everything – ending up with no strategy. Nor is it someone who is a blind follower and takes no initiative. Contributors seem to be those who are outcome oriented. They are asking where does our company want to go, and what must happen. They don’t focus on task or process.
  • 12. A Contributor defines himself differently from others If I define myself in terms of ‘what I do’, it locks me up into structures, hierarchies; into what the world is defining. While if I start defining myself at a deeper level, in terms of ‘who am I’, I am able to define myself in ways that give me meaning, satisfaction, and fulfillment. In fact, so much of life goes in trying to handle the ‘what I do’ dimension, that very little time is spent in the ‘who am I’ dimension of existence. All fulfillment begins only when I acknowledge this dimension. Otherwise, there is only acquisition.
  • 13. A Contributor defines himself differently from others
  • 14. To become a Contributor … •There is a need to shift from ‘static’ thinking practices to ‘dynamic’ thinking practices •Keep ‘vision’ at the center, not ‘activity’ •3 shifts that enable you to move from ‘performing’ to ‘contributing’
