COSTUME
REPRESENTATIONS
Strauss’s theory of ‘binary opposition’ can
be applied to this outfit, because the
colour is black this connotes evil and
mystery. The actress will wear this outfit in
shots that represent crime (for example
‘you’re such a fugitive’) as this projects a
sense of mystery to the crime she may
have committed.The wrist bands she
wears are targeted at festival/concert
goers as this symbolises youths and there
activities.
Emily’s wears black ripped
jeans, this represents the
rebellious side of her
personality, this outfit will
be worn in shots where
alcohol is present.This is
because she is under age
and abuses the substance.
We wanted to reflect the
younger generations
activities and behaviours
by doing this.
These outfit contrasts with
Emily and Myles’s darker outfits
as this is used to represent
energy and happiness.
Furthermore we picked this
outfit as the yellow links to the
title, therefore creating
synergy.We will use opposite
colours in shots for when this
outfit is in use, as this
represents that the characters
are anything but the same and
have different personalities.
Mulvey’s theory of the ‘male gaze’ can be
applied to Emily’s red top as this is low cut,
therefore attracting the attention of males.
We also chose this top as the red connoted
danger and love which is represented a
significant amount through the video, this
will therefore symbolise this. Dyers theory of
‘a star is a image’ can also be applied as
Emily may not wear this in real life and is
only for production purposes. Myles’s outfit
adheres to conventions as this is quite
vintage and alternative. His top buttons are
undone, this is to reflect his personality of
being quite laid back in the music video. The
blazer was added to appeal to an older
audience as this is quite smart.
We chose to dress Myles in this outfit
because this is similar to outfits in Indie
music videos because the colours are dull.
This outfit is fairly alternative which is what
Indie’s usually wear therefore we adhered
to conventions.
This outfit follows
All the outfits that are worn are easily replicable as we adhered
to conventions of Indie music videos being quite low budget. In
addition, we did this to appeal to our target audience as these
outfits are affordable.
