2. Intertextuality is defined as
text shaping up a meaning
for another piece of text. It
is mostly humour for the
audience to see it in action.
Interpretation of these texts
or images depends on the
knowledge of the audiences’
on the given texts or images
3. Intertextuality is mostly seen in animated movies and shows, this gives them a
humours aura and it makes audiences’ concentrate more to make a reference
and have a good laugh watching the series or movies. One of the most famous
animated series that uses this concept is The Simpsons. Here is an example of
The Simpsons using intertextuality as humour. They represent Donald Trump
in their episodes like this
4. The style used in the ‘All the Small Things’ video is parody. The director, Marcos Siega, used
the intertextuality of different music videos that were popular in 2000. The videos that are
parodied include Backstreet Boys ‘I Want It That Way’, Britney Spears ‘Sometimes’, Christina
Aguilera ‘Genie in a Bottle’, as well as others from groups like N.Sync. This goes beyond
referencing since Blink 182 are making fun of the videos rather than just copying aspects of
them. As well as parody there’s also disjuncture since the lyrics don’t match anything that’s
show in the visuals. In fact, the song was written for DeLonge’s, the lead singer, girlfriend at
the time so usually you wouldn’t expect a song with such meaning to be paired with a parody
video. This is common in Blink 182 music videos and links with Andrew Goodwin’s theory that
music videos don’t always link with the lyrics.
