The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. Our Genre Choices
For our teaser trailer, we have decided as a group that we will create a
Thriller - Romance.
The reason for choosing a hybrid genre is because we are able to market
and promote our film to a wider audience and mass variety of people in
order to gain the most revenue. Furthermore, by choosing a hybrid genre,
we are able to create an individual and unique film as we will be combining
different conventions from each genre in order to create a more
contrasting film trailer.
We have been inspired by two film from both genres, 'Safe haven' which is
a thriller romance and 'The Boy Next Door' which is a Mystery Thriller. We
will draw inspiration from both aspects of these films in order to balance
both aspects from each genre so that when creating our teaser, it isn't
predominately focused on one genre.
3. Setting
The typical settings that are used in a Thriller-Romance films are rather
contrasting due to the fact that a typical Thriller film can be set in a variety
of different places ranging from in the woods to abandoned houses.
Furthermore, thrillers are usually based in dark places with corners in order
to build up suspense and tension. On the other hand a stereotypical
Romance film is usually set in the city and places like Paris which are
known for being the 'city of love' in order to create a serine and romantic
atmosphere.
The way in which we are going to create a suitable setting in which will
reflect both of the genres to best portray the narrative and what is
happening in a particular scene by combining both typical setting from
both of typical thriller and drama locations.
For example, in 'Safe Haven' a thriller romance film, it has mostly been set
in two different locations which show two different houses. Our teaser
trailer will be set mostly over two or three locations which are:
School/College campus, woodland and at the characters homes.
4. Characters
We have deiced to base our teaser trailer around two main characters, a male
and female, which is typically seen in romance films. Within a thriller film, there
is always a protagonist and an antagonist as well as a break in the equilibrium.
In terms of out teaser trailer, we are challenging the conventions seen in a
romance films as well as in thriller films due to the fact that the male character is
both the protagonist and the antagonist; this is because this character suffers
from an identity disorder and his alter ego is the antagonist as this character is
the crazed killer. To balance the genres equally, the female character will be the
protagonist which is typically seen within romance films.
Our two main characters will share equal screen time in order to show the
importance of both these characters in relation to the narrative as well as with
each other. Our male character has been split into two, meaning that he will be
represented in a different light which will determine what character is present,
the alter or himself. On the other hand, the female character is a typical school
girl and will be represented this way through looking for romance. She is also
represented as being a damsel in distress through the way that she is getting
herself into trouble without knowing it by helping the male character. She is not
seen to be a typical damsel in distress through typical conventions as she is not
being represented as being weak and helpless, she is being represented by
putting herself into a situation which she cannot fix.
In relation to 'The Boy Next Door' the antagonist is the young male character
who preys upon his female neighbour after she repeatedly rejected him and the
protagonist is the older female mother. Whereas in Safe Haven, both the male
and female characters are the protagonists, and the male character who is the
females ex is seen to be the antagonist.
5. Narrative
The plot to our teaser trailer is a boy who struggles with an identity
disorder joins the girls school/college who soon become friends and
fall in love. As time passes the male character begins to notice that he
is losing time and asked the female character for help to find out what
is happening in these blanks of time in which the female character
discovers that during these black out periods, his alter ego is actually
out murdering people.
In terms of a romance film, the narrative is usually the same in each
film following a similar plot line of boy meets girl, they fall in love and
live happily ever after. Whereas in thriller films it is more complex
through the way that there are more steps taken to create a better
driven plot line which the equilibrium needs to be disrupted and then
fixed by either repairing or creating an entirely new one.
6. Iconography
Iconography the visual images and symbols used in a work of art or
the study or interpretation of these. In terms of a thriller film there are
many different objects and props that are used to signify that it is a
thriller film such as the use of weapons like a knife which as they have
connotations in thriller films to be the murder weapon; by using this
common device that is seen across many thriller films, it is clear to the
audience and will keep them engaged throughout of death scene. On
the other hand, iconography used in romance films are different as a
bunch of roses or an engagement ring connotes the romantic genre as
these are stereotypically known globally to be a gesture of romance.
In terms of iconography that we will use in our teaser, we have not
thoroughly given thought to it yet, but most likely we will follow the
generic conventions used in both of these genres in order to make it
clear to the audience what is happening. For example, we may use
typical weapons to signify the murder weapon and chocolates and
roses to show romantic elements.
7. Style
In relation to the style used within a thriller film, it follows the same style in each
film in order to create a tense and impactful atmosphere. Typically, in a thriller
there is a lot of low key lighting used as well as short and quick cuts in order to
create a faster pace so that more tension arises from the audience so that it can
have an impactful jump scare. A wide range of camera techniques are used to
create a thriller film so that it makes each scene more powerful through the use
of montage editing, canted angles and extreme close ups. To conclude, the
colour red is also used to give connotations of danger as well as blood.
On the other hand, when looking at the styles used within a romance film, it is
hugely different from a thriller film as within a romance film, it does not have to
deliver a scare to the audience and build dramatic tension through the use of a
short pace. Slow motion and longer cut clips are used within romance films in
order to build tension which is different from tension created in a thriller film as
well as also using the colour red which in a romance film has connotations of
love and romance as oppose to a thriller where red is used to connote blood and
danger.
In terms of our teaser, the style that we are going to use is a combination of
continuity and montage editing in order to bets reflect and represent both of our
genres.
