2. Text Screens
The text screens we used in our trailer are quite cliche as they stick to the
conventions of a romance film by being simplistic as I had discovered from
my research. The colours tend to be
simple too, by using neutral
colours. They
also use simplistic fonts, as it is easy to
read in the little time it appears on
the screen.

3. Gender Roles
We decided to stick to the conventions of genera roles.
We wanted the guy to make the first move by walking up to
the girl and introducing himself. We felt that by sticking
to the stereotypical characters, it allowed our audience to
relate more to them and to follow the conventions of a romance film.
We also made it so that the guy was more powerful than the females, as he had to
choose between the both of them. He was the one to break one of their hearts,
therefore he had more control over the situation, being the most dominating which
is a clear stereotype. life. However, we decided to develop this convention as we
gave him the problem of choosing , but we also gave the fiance a free choice, as she
deletes the picture of them two suggesting that she has broken up with him
because he fell in love with someone else, and it wasn’t fair on her. This encourages
women to feel like they also have an opinion and choice in these matters.

4. Gender Roles
Another stereotypical romance convention is that women should be
domesticated, doing housework and we shot a scene of them arguing
in the kitchen. We wanted to show the man getting home from work
to his fiance, and the best place we though that would show this was
the kitchen - using the conventions.

5. Costume
We stuck to the conventions of characters in term of their representation. We
knew that costume was very important in terms of this. We wanted the girl
to be very ‘girly’ and decided she should wear dresses and skirts or
pink/floral tops throughout the trailer. This easily shows her character,
which is conventionally the stereotypical female protagonist in romance
films.
By researching the protagonist for The
Vow, the character shares the same
representation of appearance as our
female character. Therefore we used
the same ideas for clothing - thus
reinforcing the conventions of
costume for romance films.

6. Sound
Sound plays a very important role in our trailer. We used an original song
that told a story through the protagonist’s view. We made it very light and
dreamy, reflecting her character. This uses the romantic conventions as the
songs used in trailers are often slow paced with a high pitch, lyrics about
love.
We also used the absence of sound to be effective and stick to the conventions
of a romance film. There is often a comical line said in the trailer, they use the
absence of sound when the funny line is said as this adds to the humour,
making the audience focus purely on the dialogue. We
decided we should do this when the fiance says to her
friend that he doesn’t have relatives who live here,
suggesting that the girl we was with is a love interest. It is
awkward but makes it comical, adding light to the serious
situation.

7. Overall, our trailer sticks to the conventions
of a romance trailer with the use of text
screens, gender roles, costume and sound.
