Educators and technologists have been making the case for the transformative power of technology in teaching and learning for decades. However, despite the rhetoric and increasing efforts to integrate technology into the classroom, in many cases the results are insignificant and not yielding the return on education that districts are looking for. This is in part due to some teachers getting caught up in the latest edtech resources and failing to prioritize educational value above all else. This session will explore the affordances of technology in teaching and learning as well as the importance of IT staff and educators being committed to understanding each other’s point of view. The mission of the school is more than simply running an email server or a data center. Although IT services are critical, the end goal is improving student outcomes. We owe it to our students to work toward this goal together and overcome the trap of putting the cart before the horse with education technology.

In 2018, the University of Oregon (UO) Libraries embarked on a refresh of its collaborative digital scholarship infrastructure in preparation for taking on projects in association with the UO GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) Alliance's Mellon Fellowship Grants and the Digital Scholarship Center's Faculty Grants. This required transforming the existing organizational framework with a service level agreement for new partnerships and instituting a virtual teams model to facilitate inter-departmental work. The service level agreement was intended to help manage operational labor and create a sustainable model for project-based work with minimal technical debt. This presentation will discuss how the agreement has impacted the work of research content creation, preservation, and technical infrastructure management. We will also explore the causes and effects of the agreement's implementation in the virtual teams model, using the framework of the Mellon Fellowship Grants and Digital Scholarship Center Faculty Grants.

In this paper we present the Edoo initiative that aims for increased involvement of teachers in the process of e-learning materials creation. Its main goal is to connect two distinct communities – teachers as users of e-learning materials and programmers as creators of e-learning materials – through the online portal and learning site designed for support and collaboration. The goal of the initiative is to increase cooperation between the two communities, thus overcoming the domain gap between them. The idea of the initiative was well received among teachers, who are missing appropriate learning materials and lack the ability to adapt existing materials to their specific teaching needs. We started the initiative in spring 2013, while the first collaborative projects are being implemented in the winter semester of 2013/2014. The expected result of the initiative is the creation of quality didactic applications that teachers can use in their classes. Besides, we aim at modular and adaptable educational applications with publicly available source code to enable its customization and further development.

The University of Wollongong and Blackboard have collaborated to develop an exemplary course for staff that demonstrates best practice for digital learning within Moodle. In 2015, the University implemented a set of minimum expectations and good practice elements called the Digital Learning Thresholds (DLT). The DLT strategy supports the principle that all students will have access to digital learning and both staff and students have clear expectations about the use of digital learning within the curriculum. This session will be co-presented by Lynley Clark from Blackboard and Denise Spanswick from the University of Wollongong (UOW). Teachers in the Lewisville Independent School District are provided professional development opportunities to learn how to effectively integrate new and old technology tools into their instruction. This includes learning the basics of each tool, designing lessons that leverage the tools, and collaborating with other teachers to develop cross-curricular projects. A multi-day instructional technology camp provides training for over 100 teachers on having students use devices to create content and products in the classroom. Surveys found that teachers felt more prepared to incorporate technology into lessons aligned with district initiatives and that students were using iPads and MacBooks several times a week for activities like research, media creation, and presentations.
