Continuing Professional Development
 CPD stands forContinuing Professional Development.
 Continuing professional development should be a lifelong, systematic and
planned process to maintain and develop professional competence, creativity
and innovation.
 Continuing professional development helps ensure your skills and knowledge
are up to date.
 CPD means by which professionals maintain, improve and broaden their
knowledge and skills and develop the personal qualities and competencies
required in their working lives.
Components of CPD
SN Components Description
1. Duration Effective professional development lasts at least two semesters, and
needs a ‘rhythm’ of follow-up and consolidation.
2. Targeted The content should be relevant to the teachers’ needs and day-to-day
experiences.
3. Aligned No single activity is universally effective – instead it is a combination that
reinforced the message from different perspectives that works.
4. Content Successful development must consider both subject knowledge and
subject-specific teaching techniques.
5. Activities Successful development features common types of activities including
discussion, experimentation and analysis and reflection.
6. External input Constructive external input provides new perspectives and challenges
orthodoxies.
7. Collaboration Peer support gives participants an opportunity to work together and
refine new approaches.
8. Leadership Effective leaders get involved in development, define opportunities and
provide the support needed to embed change.
