Consumer awareness and consumer protection laws are important in India given the large number of producers, sellers, and product varieties. The Consumer Protection Act of 1986 established a consumer redressal system to address grievances. This system includes consumer courts at the district, state and national levels where consumers can file complaints. To file a complaint, consumers must submit documentation to the appropriate court based on the value of the good or service. NGOs can also assist consumers if producers do not adequately address issues. The overall system aims to educate consumers about their rights and provide a means to seek compensation when subjected to unfair trade practices.
