Introduction
 Conjunctivitis is a common condition that
causes redness and inflammation of the
thin layer of tissue that covers the front of
the eye (the conjunctiva).
Defination
Conjunctivitis also known as pink eye,
is Inflammation or infection of the
outermost layer of the white part of
the eye and the inner surface of the
eyelid.
Types
Conjunctivitis is classified according to
its cause.
Bacterial conjunctivitis
 Staphylococci aureus.
 Streptococci pneumonia.
 Haemophilus infulenzae are types of
bacteria that commonly cause
Conjunctivitis.
Symptoms of bacterial
Conjunctivitis
 Discomfort
 Foreign body sensation
 Eye pain
 Burning sensation
 Swelling
 Redness
 Yellowish and greenish discharge
viral Conjunctivitis
 A several number of viruses can cause of
Conjunctivitis the most common are
Adenovirus, Herpes simplex and
Peramyxo virus.
Symptoms of viral
Conjunctivitis
 Watery discharge
 Itching
 Sweeling of the eyes
 Redness in the eyes
Allergic Conjunctivitis
 The allergens may be either exogenous
such as pollens ,topical medication, animal,
dust and drugs like penicillin ,atropine .
Symptoms of allergic
Conjunctivitis
 Intense itching
 Irritation
 Burning sensation
 Swelling of the eye membrane redness of
the eye
 Severe photophobia
Toxic or chemical
Conjunctivitis
 Chemical Conjunctivitis can result when any
irritating substance enters the eyes.
 Common offending irritants are household
cleanness, smoke , hair sprays, chlorine in
swimming .
Subconjunctival
Haemorrhage
 A subconjunctival haemorrhage is bleeding
underneath the conjunctiva. It can occur
after a sudden or severe sneeze or cough,
heavy lifting, vomiting or even rubbing
one's eyes too roughly.
Diagnostic Evaluation
 Visual acuity measurment to determine the
extent to which vision may be affected.
 Evaluation of the conjunctiva and external
eye tissue using bright light and
magnification .
 Evaluation of the inner structures of the
eye to ensure that no other tissue are
affected by the condition.
Con…
 Supplemental testing may include taking
culture or smears of conjunctival tissue ,
particularly in cases of chronic
conjunctivitis.
Treatment
 It's important to stop wearing contact lenses whilst affected
by conjunctivitis. It often resolves on its own, but treatment
can speed the recovery process.
 Allergic conjunctivitis can be treated with
antihistamines.(eg. ANTAZOLINE and NAPHAZOLINE)
 Bacterial conjunctivitis can be treated with antibiotic eye
drops.(eg.MOXIFLOXACIN and GATIFLOXACIN).
 Viral conjunctivitis can be treated with the antiviral eye
drops.(eg.acyclovir and trifluridine).
Chemical conjunctivitis
 Hospital care.
 Continuued irrigation.
 Antibiotic eye drops.
 Pain medication.
Nursing Management
 The conjunctival sac should be washed with norml
saline three times a day .
 The wash helps to remove the discharge .
 Lie down the patient to affected side ,so that discharge
may not the contact the good eye.
 Encourage the patient do not touch the good eye
frequently
 Advise the patient to wash hands thoroughly with soap
and water frequently.
Thank you
