Coordinating conjunctions join elements of equal grammatical rank, such as words, phrases, and independent clauses, while subordinating conjunctions join two clauses where one is subordinate to the other. Common coordinating conjunctions include for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so and common subordinating conjunctions include because, after, although, as, until, when, while, where, since, as soon as.
