Conductor Difference between
Class 1, Class 2 & Class 5
2021.09.27
Prepared : Design team
1/3
Copper Conductor Information
Conductors are categorized into classes based on the number of strands. The higher the
class, the more strands in the conductor.
Class 1 , Solid Conductor
Class 2 , Stranded Conductor
Class 5 , Flexible Conductor
Class 6 , Extra Flexible Conductor
2/3
Copper Conductor Information
What is Solid conductor ? Advantages Disadvantages
Solid wire consists of single
strand of copper metal wire.
1. This wire offers a lower resistance
and is best to use in higher
frequencies.
2. Single-strand copper conductors
are typically used as magnet wire
in motors and transformers.
1. They are relatively rigid, do not
bend easily, and are typically
installed in permanent,
infrequently handled, and low
flex applications.
2. solid conductors are prone to bre
aking after just a few cycles of
bending
Class 1 (Solid copper Conductor)
Solid Conductor
3/3
Copper Conductor Information
What is Stranded
conductor ?
Advantages Disadvantages
A standard wire contains many
thin wire strands that are
twisted together.
1. Stranded cable is much more
flexible and consequently suited to
applications which demand
flexibility and reshaping.
2. The standard wire has larger cross-
sectional area than the solid wire.
3. Due to higher attenuation, strande
d cable is better used over shorter
distances.
4. A particular cross-section of a
stranded conductor gives it
essentially the same resistance
characteristics as a single-strand
conductor, but with added
flexibility
1. It is used where the installation is
fixed.
Class 2 (Stranded copper Conductor)
Stranded Copper conductor
4/3
Copper Conductor Information
What is Stranded
conductor ?
Advantages Disadvantages
Class 5 refers to flexible
conductor. The core of class 5
conductor has more number of
thin wires than class 2 to make it
more flexible. It is also called soft
conductor.
1. flexible wires are being used as
building/house wires, Commercial
complexes and industries for
lighting etc.
2. When the load is increased then
wire may get warmer and PVC of
wire will be melted whereas, in
Class 5 conductor it has more
conductivity so it gets less warm
than of Class 2.
3. It is used where the more
movement.
4. These cables are used for general
wiring, unenclosed, enclosed in
conduit, buried direct or in under
ground ducts for domestic,
commercial and industrial
applications where not subject to
mechanical damage.
1. As the Class 5 conductors are
having a higher resistance, they
will consume more power.
