Planning Your Skype for
Business Voice Solution
Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™
All-in-the-cloud, on-premises, or hybrid?
• Do you want (or are required) to retain functionality provided by your
on-premises deployment?
• Do you need features that are currently available only with your on-
premises voice solution?
• How do you best provide Private Branch Exchange (PBX)
functionality, access to the Public Switched Telephone Network
(PSTN)?
• Do you need to provide conferencing capabilities for all users in your
organization?
• What your plan is for moving people to the cloud?
All of these depend on your company’s current and future needs!
Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™
What is the best solution?
The first steps on deciding what solution will provide the “best fit” can be made easier by
answering a few simple questions:
• Do I have an existing on-premises Skype for Business Server deployment?
• Are my users today “homed” in Skype for Business on-premises, in the cloud on Skype for
Business Online, or both?
• Do I want to move my on-premises users to the cloud?
• Is Microsoft’s PSTN Calling service available in my region?
• Do I want to keep my current telephony carrier?
• Do I need to keep my current telephony carrier because of an existing contract?
• Do I have an existing on-premises legacy PBX that I want or need to keep?
• Does my current legacy PBX offer unique features that are critical to my business?
• Do any / all of my users require features not currently offered in Cloud PBX?
Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™
Where do IT responsibilities sit?
Whether you consider on-premises only, cloud-only, or a mixture of
both through a hybrid deployment of Skype for Business (all of which
we will cover in this series), there are five core responsibilities that
you as the organization’s IT will take ownership for:
1. Networking and connectivity – Ensure network capacity and
availability through firewalls, proxy servers, gateways, and across
WAN links by performing a network assessment (or by contracting
with a partner to do the assessment).
Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™

data and ensure it is protected and monitored wherever it is
stored and while it is in transit.

security standards on devices that are used to access your data

On-Premises Enterprise Voice
The Enterprise Voice solution has been since the OCS 2007 days and have matured immensely
thru Lync and now Skype for Business to support many of the common calling features found
in a traditional PBX system

On-Premises Enterprise Voice
The key features of an on-premises Voice solution:
• You own everything.
• You are responsible for Capacity planning and sizing.
• You are responsible for Server acquisition and setup.
• You are responsible for Deployment.
• You are responsible for Scaling out, patching, and operations.
• You are responsible for Backing up data.
• You are responsible for Maintaining failover and disaster recovery.
• You are responsible for Connecting your Skype for Business Server infrastructure to
the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).
• You are responsible for Integration with existing phone equipment, such as Private
Branch Exchanges (PBXs).
• You are responsible for deployment of PSTN conferencing.
Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™
On-Premises Enterprise Voice
Here’s the licensing required for an on-premises Voice solution:
• Server Operating System (All server roles)
• SQL Server
• Skype for Business 2015 Server License (Front End servers only)
• Skype for Business 2015 Client Access License
(These are cumulative for each feature required)
o Standard CAL (IM & Presence)
o Enterprise CAL (Conferencing)
o Enterprise Plus CAL (Enterprise Voice)
• Exchange 2013 / 2016 Server License
• Exchange 2013 /2016 Enterprise Client Access License
(This provides voicemail capabilities)
Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™
On-Premises Enterprise Voice
With Exchange on-premises integration you have the following
advantages:
• Unified presence information
• Unified contact store
• Unified messaging integration
• Integrated archiving
• Integrated search of archived content

Consider this solution if:
• You need a highly customized solution.
• Legacy solutions with third-party components that depend on
hardware and software that are not supported by Skype for Business
Online. For example, Survivable Branch Appliance (SBA)
configurations.
• Privacy restrictions that prevent synchronization of Windows Active
Directory accounts with Office 365.
• You desire control of the entire platform and solution.
Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling
Comparing Skype for Business Solutions
Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™
Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling
Microsoft-hosted Cloud PBX functionality with an added PSTN Calling service enables
calling to landlines and mobile phones around the world. Because the PSTN Calling service
operates out of Office 365, this is a completely-in-the-cloud offering that does not require
an on-premises server deployment.
The Cloud PBX footprint is very simple:

Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling is great when:
• Your PBX does not offer unique features that you need to retain.
• You don’t want to maintain an on-premises PBX solution
• You don’t want to maintain any Skype for Business infrastructure.
• You want to use Microsoft-provided PSTN services (and PSTN Calling service is available
in your region).
• You want to leverage Office 365 for your subscription-based licensing.
• You want to use cloud-only features like Skype Meeting Broadcast & PSTN Conferencing

• Use SharePoint Online for collaboration, off-loading
the burden of maintaining on-premises SharePoint
servers.
• Use Skype for Business, Exchange, and SharePoint
integrated features, including Unified Messaging
(UM) in Office 365.
Hybrid Voice
Comparing Skype for Business Solutions
Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™
Hybrid Voice
If you have an existing Skype for Business Server deployment, you can
choose a hybrid offering that consists of a Skype for Business Server on-
premises deployment modified for hybrid PSTN.
Users in your organization who are homed in the cloud can receive PBX
services from the Microsoft cloud, but PSTN connectivity is provided
through Enterprise Voice on your on-premises Skype for Business Server
deployment.
Plus you can use cloud-only features like Skype Meeting Broadcast & PSTN
Conferencing
Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™
Hybrid Voice
This deployment can be the most complex, as it requires components from
both an on-premises as well as the cloud - based on where users are
“homed”.

With a Hybrid solution you are also responsible for the following:
• Plan and design identity managementrequirements, including integrating on-
premises identities with Office 365.
• Ensure network capacity and availability through firewalls, proxy servers,
gateways, and across WAN links by performing a network assessment or by
contracting with a partner to do the assessment.
• Acquire third-party SSL certificates to provide enterprise-security for Office 365
service offerings.
• Decide if you want to connect to Office 365 with Internet Protocol version 6
(IPv6).
• Determine how much feature integration withon-premises and online versions of
Skype for Business, Exchange, and SharePoint is desired.
• Determine which proxy server device will be used for requests from Office 365.

Hybrid Voice
With a Hybrid solution you have lots of flexibility:
• You can integrate with other Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Exchange Online and SharePoint Online.
• Take advantage of Skype Meeting Broadcast.
• Take advantage of PSTN conferencing.
• Your Skype for Business Online users get their PSTN connectivity through Enterprise Voice on your on-premises
Skype for Business Server deployment, with Skype for Business call control in the cloud.
• Users homed on premises and some users are homed online, but the users share the same Session Initiation
Protocol (SIP) domain, such as contoso.com.
• Users in your organization, whether homed in the cloud or on premises, will be able to send and receive calls
with landlines and mobile phones through the existing on-premises voice infrastructure.
• PSTN Calling service is available in your region, but you cannot consider moving to Microsoft-provided PSTN for
other reasons - such as contractual obligations with your existing carrier.
• You can retain your users' voice capabilities as you begin to move them to Skype for Business Online.
• You can move your users at your own pace, knowing that their voice features will continue no matter where they
are homed.
• If you decide you can leave your current carrier, you can port your cloud users in the United States to Microsoft's
full Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling service, with Microsoft providing all PBX and PSTN capabilities.

  • 4. Planning Your Skype for Business Voice Solution
  • 5. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ All-in-the-cloud, on-premises, or hybrid? • Do you want (or are required) to retain functionality provided by your on-premises deployment? • Do you need features that are currently available only with your on- premises voice solution? • How do you best provide Private Branch Exchange (PBX) functionality, access to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)? • Do you need to provide conferencing capabilities for all users in your organization? • What your plan is for moving people to the cloud? All of these depend on your company’s current and future needs!
  • 6. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ What is the best solution? The first steps on deciding what solution will provide the “best fit” can be made easier by answering a few simple questions: • Do I have an existing on-premises Skype for Business Server deployment? • Are my users today “homed” in Skype for Business on-premises, in the cloud on Skype for Business Online, or both? • Do I want to move my on-premises users to the cloud? • Is Microsoft’s PSTN Calling service available in my region? • Do I want to keep my current telephony carrier? • Do I need to keep my current telephony carrier because of an existing contract? • Do I have an existing on-premises legacy PBX that I want or need to keep? • Does my current legacy PBX offer unique features that are critical to my business? • Do any / all of my users require features not currently offered in Cloud PBX?
  • 7. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Where do IT responsibilities sit? Whether you consider on-premises only, cloud-only, or a mixture of both through a hybrid deployment of Skype for Business (all of which we will cover in this series), there are five core responsibilities that you as the organization’s IT will take ownership for: 1. Networking and connectivity – Ensure network capacity and availability through firewalls, proxy servers, gateways, and across WAN links by performing a network assessment (or by contracting with a partner to do the assessment).
  • 8. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Where do IT responsibilities sit? Whether you consider on-premises only, cloud-only, or a mixture of both through a hybrid deployment of Skype for Business (all of which we will cover in this series), there are five core responsibilities that you as the organization’s IT will take ownership for: 2. Data governance & rights management – Classify your sensitive data and ensure it is protected and monitored wherever it is stored and while it is in transit.
  • 9. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Where do IT responsibilities sit? Whether you consider on-premises only, cloud-only, or a mixture of both through a hybrid deployment of Skype for Business (all of which we will cover in this series), there are five core responsibilities that you as the organization’s IT will take ownership for: 3. Client endpoints – Establish, measure, and enforce modern security standards on devices that are used to access your data and assets.
  • 10. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Where do IT responsibilities sit? Whether you consider on-premises only, cloud-only, or a mixture of both through a hybrid deployment of Skype for Business (all of which we will cover in this series), there are five core responsibilities that you as the organization’s IT will take ownership for: 4. Account & access management – Establish a profile for “normal” account activity and alert on unusual activity.
  • 11. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Where do IT responsibilities sit? Whether you consider on-premises only, cloud-only, or a mixture of both through a hybrid deployment of Skype for Business (all of which we will cover in this series), there are five core responsibilities that you as the organization’s IT will take ownership for: 5. Identity - Use credentials secured by hardware or Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for all identities.
  • 12. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Where do SHARED responsibilities sit? • With a Cloud solution, wither full or hybrid, understanding where exclusive and shared ownership falls goes hand in hand with understanding the responsibilities that IT must undertake in managing and maintaining a voice solution
  • 13. On-Premises Enterprise Voice Comparing Skype for Business Solutions
  • 14. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ On-Premises Enterprise Voice The Enterprise Voice solution has been since the OCS 2007 days and have matured immensely thru Lync and now Skype for Business to support many of the common calling features found in a traditional PBX system An On-Premises Voice implementation looks like: Central Site WAN PSTNSkype for Business Server Skype for Business Server UsersUsers Existing PBX or Telco gateway Existing PBX or Telco gateway Central Site WAN PSTNSkype for Business Server Users Existing PBX or Telco gateway
  • 15. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ On-Premises Enterprise Voice The Enterprise Voice solution has been since the OCS 2007 days and have matured immensely thru Lync and now Skype for Business to support many of the common calling features found in a traditional PBX system You can use the following decision tree for On-Premises Voice: Move some users Existing PBX has unique functionality? Start Investigate replacing PBX with Skype for Business Server All users need to stay on existing PBX? Yes Yes No No Consider Cloud PBX
  • 16. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ On-Premises Enterprise Voice The key features of an on-premises Voice solution: • You own everything. • You are responsible for Connecting your Skype for Business Server infrastructure to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). • You are responsible for Integration with existing phone equipment, such as Private Branch Exchanges (PBXs). • You are responsible for deployment of PSTN conferencing.
  • 17. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ On-Premises Enterprise Voice Here’s the licensing required for an on-premises Voice solution: • Server Operating System (All server roles) • SQL Server • Skype for Business 2015 Server License (Front End servers only) • Skype for Business 2015 Client Access License (These are cumulative for each feature required) o Standard CAL (IM & Presence) o Enterprise CAL (Conferencing) o Enterprise Plus CAL (Enterprise Voice) • Exchange 2013 / 2016 Server License • Exchange 2013 /2016 Enterprise Client Access License (This provides voicemail capabilities)
  • 18. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ On-Premises Enterprise Voice With Exchange on-premises integration you have the following advantages: • Unified presence information • Unified contact store • Unified messaging integration • Integrated archiving • Integrated search of archived content On premises Exchange Server Skype for Business Server
  • 19. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ On-Premises Enterprise Voice Consider this solution if: • You need a highly customized solution. • Legacy solutions with third-party components that depend on hardware and software that are not supported by Skype for Business Online. For example, Survivable Branch Appliance (SBA) configurations. • Privacy restrictions that prevent synchronization of Windows Active Directory accounts with Office 365. • You desire control of the entire platform and solution.
  • 20. Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling Comparing Skype for Business Solutions
  • 21. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling Microsoft-hosted Cloud PBX functionality with an added PSTN Calling service enables calling to landlines and mobile phones around the world. Because the PSTN Calling service operates out of Office 365, this is a completely-in-the-cloud offering that does not require an on-premises server deployment. The Cloud PBX footprint is very simple: PSTN Office 365 including Skype for Business Online Microsoft Cloud PBX Skype for Business Users
  • 22. You can use the following decision tree for Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling: Existing PBX has unique functionality? Start No Is Microsoft PSTN available in your region? Consider Microsoft PSTN? Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling Yes Yes No No Consider Hybrid Soltion
  • 23. Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling is great when: • Your PBX does not offer unique features that you need to retain. • You don’t want to maintain an on-premises PBX solution • You don’t want to maintain any Skype for Business infrastructure. • You want to use Microsoft-provided PSTN services (and PSTN Calling service is available in your region). • You want to leverage Office 365 for your subscription-based licensing. • You want to use cloud-only features like Skype Meeting Broadcast & PSTN Conferencing
  • 24. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling With Office 365 integration you have the following advantages: On premises Office 365 Exchange Online SharePoint Online Skype for Business Online • Use Skype for Business Online for Cloud PBX, off- loading the burden of on-premises PBX systems. • Use Exchange Online for email, off-loading the burden of on-premises email servers and storage. • Use SharePoint Online for collaboration, off-loading the burden of maintaining on-premises SharePoint servers. • Use Skype for Business, Exchange, and SharePoint integrated features, including Unified Messaging (UM) in Office 365.
  • 25. Hybrid Voice Comparing Skype for Business Solutions
  • 26. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Hybrid Voice If you have an existing Skype for Business Server deployment, you can choose a hybrid offering that consists of a Skype for Business Server on- premises deployment modified for hybrid PSTN. Users in your organization who are homed in the cloud can receive PBX services from the Microsoft cloud, but PSTN connectivity is provided through Enterprise Voice on your on-premises Skype for Business Server deployment. Plus you can use cloud-only features like Skype Meeting Broadcast & PSTN Conferencing
  • 27. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Hybrid Voice This deployment can be the most complex, as it requires components from both an on-premises as well as the cloud - based on where users are “homed”. Office 365 Skype for Business Online Microsoft Azure Active Directory Tenant Microsoft Azure Edge Server Skype for Business front end pool Active Directory Domain Services Directory synchronization On premises PSTNExisting PBX or Telco gatewayMicrosoft Cloud PBX PSTN
  • 28. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Hybrid Voice The following decision tree can be used for the Hybrid solution: Existing PBX has unique functionality? Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling Yes Yes No No Existing on-prem Lync/ Skype for Business deployment? Cloud PBX with Skype for Business Server deployment Yes
  • 29. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Hybrid Voice Along with the key features of an on-premises Voice solution: • You own everything.
  • 30. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Hybrid Voice With a Hybrid solution you are also responsible for the following: • Plan and design identity managementrequirements, including integrating on- premises identities with Office 365. • Ensure network capacity and availability through firewalls, proxy servers, gateways, and across WAN links by performing a network assessment or by contracting with a partner to do the assessment. • Acquire third-party SSL certificates to provide enterprise-security for Office 365 service offerings. • Decide if you want to connect to Office 365 with Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6). • Determine how much feature integration withon-premises and online versions of Skype for Business, Exchange, and SharePoint is desired. • Determine which proxy server device will be used for requests from Office 365.
  • 31. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Hybrid Voice With a Hybrid solution you also have different Exchange options: Skype for Business Server with Exchange Online and SharePoint Online On premises Edge Server Office 365 Exchange Online SharePoint Online Skype for Business Server • Use the full feature set of Skype for Business Server. • Leverage your existing on-premises phone equipment, such as PBXs.
  • 32. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Hybrid Voice With a Hybrid solution you also have different Exchange options: Exchange Server with Skype for Business Online • Leverage your existing Exchange infrastructure. • Use Skype for Business Online for presence, IM, and conferencing capabilities. Office 365 Skype for Business Online On premises Exchange Server
  • 33. Real Microsoft expertise. Real business value.™ Hybrid Voice With a Hybrid solution you have lots of flexibility: • You can integrate with other Microsoft Office 365 applications, including Exchange Online and SharePoint Online. • Take advantage of Skype Meeting Broadcast. • Take advantage of PSTN conferencing. • Your Skype for Business Online users get their PSTN connectivity through Enterprise Voice on your on-premises Skype for Business Server deployment, with Skype for Business call control in the cloud. • Users homed on premises and some users are homed online, but the users share the same Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) domain, such as contoso.com. • Users in your organization, whether homed in the cloud or on premises, will be able to send and receive calls with landlines and mobile phones through the existing on-premises voice infrastructure. • PSTN Calling service is available in your region, but you cannot consider moving to Microsoft-provided PSTN for other reasons - such as contractual obligations with your existing carrier. • You can retain your users' voice capabilities as you begin to move them to Skype for Business Online. • You can move your users at your own pace, knowing that their voice features will continue no matter where they are homed. • If you decide you can leave your current carrier, you can port your cloud users in the United States to Microsoft's full Cloud PBX with PSTN Calling service, with Microsoft providing all PBX and PSTN capabilities.
