Cost effective scaling solutions required
to deal with growing signaling demands
 All-IP networks are

Introducing
Diameter Signaling Controllers

signaling interfaces and HSS, OCS, PCRF
  applications

 Provides critical controls
   • Security
                                     Standards compliant
   • Overload control
                               • RFC 3588 Diameter agent

                                                                     6
Diameter Signaling Controllers are
 different from STPs
 Diameter lacks congestion management and
     resource allocation provided by SS7
      – Similar to the ISUP to SIP paradigm shift
      – Same challenges in Signaling Control for Diameter
        and SIP
      – Routing logic MUST be based on flexible criteria
 Security for Diameter signaling is key
      – Hardware based encryption and Access Control
      – DoS protection
      – rate limiting and Overload Control
 Diameter Signaling Adaptations will be required
      – Diameter AVP manipulations to normalize vendor
        implementations
      – IP and transport layer interworking

Diameter is an IP Signaling Protocol

Ready for the Evolution: LTE Session delivery requirements

  • 1. Ready for the Evolution: LTE Session delivery requirements Juan Luis Esteban Vice President, Solutions Architecture EMEA 01/06/12 Acme Packet | www.acmepacket.com 1
  • 2. Cost effective scaling solutions required to deal with growing signaling demands  All-IP networks are LTE & IMS built differently 2G/3G & PSTN SIP VoIP  SIP to establish RCS VoLTE communication sessions SS7 Hosted UC  Diameter to manage Diameter Authentication subscriber mobility and profile QoS Charging data Mobility  Exploding signaling traffic  Moving beyond voice - UC, RCS messaging, collaboration  Extreme mobile data usage  Mobile device proliferation – smartphones, tablets, M2M  Increased mobility and roaming
  • 3. Diameter Applications in LTE & IMS Attachment/registration Mobility/tracking Authentication & authorization Authentication & authorization Data and voice sessions Roaming QoS & charging AAA, charging & QoS 3
  • 4. Diameter Interfaces in LTE and IMS IMS Sh Ro Cx Diameter Pain Points Rf e2  Scalability and Complexity Rx EPC S9  Interoperability Gy/ Gz Other Challenges Gx S6a service  Overload and Gx providers Congestion S6a  Security S6d 4
  • 5. Outages are costly – to top line and to brand 5
  • 6. Introducing Diameter Signaling Controllers  Addresses all Diameter Service provider signaling interfaces and HSS, OCS, PCRF applications IPX/ nodes roaming hub • AAA • QoS MME, PDN GW, Visited • Charging GGSN, CSCF, AS service provider  Provides critical controls • Security Standards compliant • Overload control • RFC 3588 Diameter agent • Interoperability • 3GPP Diameter Routing Agent (DRA) • Routing & aggregation • GSMA Diameter Edge Agent (DEA) • Reporting & analysis 6
  • 7. Diameter Signaling Controllers are different from STPs  Diameter lacks congestion management and resource allocation provided by SS7 – Similar to the ISUP to SIP paradigm shift – Same challenges in Signaling Control for Diameter and SIP – Routing logic MUST be based on flexible criteria  Security for Diameter signaling is key – Hardware based encryption and Access Control – DoS protection – rate limiting and Overload Control  Diameter Signaling Adaptations will be required – Diameter AVP manipulations to normalize vendor implementations – IP and transport layer interworking Diameter is an IP Signaling Protocol 7 Acme Packet confidential
  • 8. Two Types of DSCs: Core and Interconnect • Voice roaming • Data roaming IPX Interconnect • Services MNO MNO federation IMS • Aggregation & routing Core • OCS proxy EPC • HSS/AAA proxy • PCRF proxy 3G/LTE 8
  • 9. Core Diameter Routing Solution  Core DSCs address all Diameter interfaces  Online charging (OCS) – Gy, Rf, Ro  QoS / policy (PCRF) – Gx, Rx  Subscriber profile/AAA (HSS) – S6a, S6b, Servers S6d, Swm  DRA 3GPP function  SLF 3GPP functions  Connection aggregation, routing & load balancing  Overload control Clients  Comprehensive L3-L5 interworking  Reporting and analysis  Benefits  Streamlined and scalable network  Improved network resiliency  Lower total cost of ownership  Faster time to market  Enhanced visibility and manageability 9
  • 10. VoLTE and Data Roaming Solution  Comprehensive SIP and Diameter control across roaming ecosystem  I-DSC – DRA and GSMA DEA functions: S6a & S9 interfaces  A-SBC – V-P-CSCF  I-SBC – I-BCF/TrGW and IPX Proxy  Net-SAFE protects Diameter and SIP borders – service availability  Maximize service reach – end-to-end interworking  Cost effective scalability – lower TCO Visited Home IPX LTE SIP Data LTE RTP Diameter 10

Net-Net SIP Multimedia-Xpress simplifying IMS  Integrated session delivery platform  Provides IMS access, call session control, routing and interconnect functions in single platform versus  Eliminates signaling complexity  Lowers total cost of ownership – CAPEX - fewer systems to deploy – OPEX savings - easier to certify, maintain & troubleshoot 14
  • 15. Net-Net SMX – comprehensive VoLTE/RCSe solution Service & applications data centers (IMS/NGN)  Integrated session delivery core based on Net-Net SBC ENUM/DNS PSTN  Standard x-CSCF 3GPP IMS interfaces IMS solution for voice, RCS(-e), FMC Cx  IP peer & multimedia services Rf ISC Mg, Mj – Subscriber populations of thousands to millions Ici e2 – Initial service roll-outs evolving to large scale subscriber deployments SBC SBC  Scaling & evolution Rx Rx/Rq – Scalable Net-Net SMX – Session-aware Gm Gm Load Balancers EPC FTTx – Purpose built platforms and xDSL VM on COTS hardware Cable Enterprise  Lower total cost of ownership – CAPEX & OPEX savings - easier to eUTRAN certify, maintain & troubleshoot LTE Fixed Access Acme Packet Confidential 15

Editor's Notes

  1. Diameter signaling relates to network attachment and service delivery Data services – Internet, video, etc.VoIP and IMS servicesNetwork attachmentLocation updatesRoamingDiameter signaling relates toAuthenticationAuthorizationLocation/mobility trackingCharging/credit checksQoS/bandwidth-based admission controlNew attachmentsResets: UE crashes, battery swaps, etc.Power on after a few hours: plane trips, turn off for the nightRegister to LTE network and IMSTracking updates: moving aroundVoice and data sessions (bearer creation and teardown)Web surfing, email, videoVoLTE, RCS (IMS)QoS and charging interfacesRoaming: data and VoLTEAuthentication to visited networkAuthorization of servicesCharging and QoS policies
  2. There are more than 85 Diameter interfaces defined by the 3GPP and related standard bodies. These interfaces cover a range of network functions and is heavily used in IMS. With all LTE mobile networks, there are even more interfaces and transactions. Diameter is used through IMS – fixed and mobile – and even more prevalent in LTE
  3. I-DSC is like an I-SBC connecting disparate retail and wholesale service providers together. This includes roaming and federation with OTT/MVNO providers. A C-DSC like a SRP, routing and aggregating Diameter traffic internal to a single operator. Core DSC applications extend to:Charging – online and offline (OCS proxy)QoS – bandwidth reservation and modification (PCRF proxy)Subscriber authentication and authorization (HSS proxy)Mobility and location updates (AAA proxy)HSS – Home Subscriber ServerPCRF – Policy Charging Rules Function
