In this paper, I therefore review how the metadiscourse concept is used in some selected research papers. By comparing these papers, I discuss the degree of similarities and differences in the use of the concept within the field. In addition, I propose a typology that includes both written and verbal metadiscourse and which may be relevant when analyzing knowledge building discourse.

Abstract:
In Knowledge Building (KB) research, the metadiscourse concept has been taken in use more in recent years. Still, the definitions seem to be quite simple and vague. In this paper, I therefore review how the metadiscourse concept is used in some selected research papers. By comparing these papers, I discuss the degree of similarities and differences in the use of the concept within the field. In addition, I propose a typology that includes both written and verbal metadiscourse and which may be relevant when analyzing knowledge building discourse.

How can concordancing help ESL teachers design vocabulary tests
This study examines how concordancing, a text-searching program, can help language teachers design vocabulary tests from extensive reading materials. The study analyzed two graded readers loaded into the concordancer to create word lists and frequency bands. Pre-tests assessed students' vocabulary knowledge from the lists, and a post-test measured gains in high frequency words. Results showed small pure vocabulary gains but significant learning from exposure in context. Frequency correlated with word acquisition but context evaluation and general frequency were also important factors. The concordancer can help teachers analyze texts, sensitizing students to word usages and patterns to improve vocabulary learning from extensive reading.
Collaborative writing using delicious and google docs
This workshop seeks to show participants how students can work on projects and writing tasks using Google Docs as an online space for collaborative writing. Participants are shown 16 steps whereby students share spaces with one another, publish to Internet, and share their URLs via TinyURL and tagging in Delicious.

In Knowledge Building (KB) research, the metadiscourse concept has been taken in use more inrecent years. The concept seems to have been used mainly to inform the academic discourse and thecollective advancement of ideas. Still, there have been few attempts to define the concept in acoherent way. In this paper I discuss whether we need to expand our understanding of the concept inorder to fully understand knowledge building discourse. By using a comprehensive definition of metacommunication as a theoretical framework, I demonstrate how different kinds of “talk about talk” are present in knowledge building discourse in selected KB research papers, while not beingexplicitly described as metadiscourse. It is suggested that several new discourse elements should beincluded in the metadiscourse concept; these are explanations of intentions in the knowledge building discourse, discussions of the relationship between the participants and questions of clarification that may better capture the meta-level in the “ongoing flow” of the knowledge buildingdiscourse. In addition, one should focus more on the discourse relationship.

Keywords and word clusters were identified from specialized corpora in these fields to extract term candidates based on their linguistic components. Collocation analysis was then used to further examine two term candidates, "LINGKUNGAN HIDUP" and "BUDAYA PERUSAHAAN", to recognize their specific meanings based on habitually co-occurring words, fulfilling the cognitive component for terminology. This analysis demonstrated how corpus linguistics can be integrated with the communicative theory of terminology to study terminology from its linguistic and cognitive perspectives.

Examining the Use of Metadiscourse Markers in Academic Writing
Acquiring proficiency in academic writing is becoming increasingly important for academics, irrespective of the academic discipline, given that publications in highly rated, peer-reviewed international journals have a profound impact on how knowledge is constructed through the process of writing. In academic writing, the use of metadiscourse markers is fundamental since academic writers have to write in such a way that they are able to skilfully distinguish opinion from fact. At the same time, they have to assess their affirmations in suitable and convincing ways. Considering the afore-mentioned, this article examines the use of metadiscourse markers in academic writing in which special attention is paid to the use of hedges and boosters. It is a general analysis and mini-review of the use of metadiscourse markers in academic writing. One empirical research article, from the field of Applied Linguistics, is used for this purpose. An introduction is given about academic writing and the need to use metadiscourse markers. Literature review based on metadiscourse markers in academic writing, with particular emphasis on hedges and boosters, is presented and discussed. The methodology of the study is outlined. The results show that there is a greater use of interactives than interactionals: with regard to interactive markers, transitional/logical connectives were most used, followed by endophoric markers, evidentials, and code glosses; with respect to interactional markers, hedges and boosters were the most used in this category with more hedges used as compared to boosters. Finally, concluding remarks are made about the analysis conducted.

I present a tool which tells the quality of document or its usefulness based on annotations. Annotation may
include comments, notes, observation, highlights, underline, explanation, question or help etc. comments
are used for evaluative purpose while others are used for summarization or for expansion also. Further
these comments may be on another annotation. Such annotations are referred as meta-annotation. All
annotation may not get equal weightage. My tool considered highlights, underline as well as comments to
infer the collective sentiment of annotators. Collective sentiments of annotators are classified as positive,
negative, objectivity. My tool computes collective sentiment of annotations in two manners. It counts all the
annotation present on the documents as well as it also computes sentiment scores of all annotation which
includes comments to obtain the collective sentiments about the document or to judge the quality of

- 2. INTRODUCTION Concordancer is a basic tool for corpus linguist. Turns the electronic texts into databases which can be searched. Offers the possibility of searching for word combinations within a specified range of words and looking up parts of words (substrings, in particular affixes, for example). A more sophisticated program might also provide its users with lists of collocates or frequency lists.
- 3. INTRODUCTION Corpora that can be searched are text files, websites, emails, etc (anything that can be converted into electronic texts). Examples of concordance program: TextSTAT WordCruncher AntConc WordSmith
- 5. To find out which other words belong with a word they want to use.
- 6. Example: In academic writing, a paper can describe, claim, or show, though it doesn't believe or want (*this paper wants to prove that ...).
- 7. Language teachers: can use the concordancer to find similar patterns so as to help their students. can also use it to help produce vocabulary exercises. Researcher: can use a concordancer, for example when searching through a database of hospital accident records, to see whether fracture is associated with fall, grease, ladder.
- 8. Article 1 : A concordance-based study of metaphoric expressions used by general practitioners and patients in consultation Purpose: To study metaphoric expressions used by doctors and patients in general practice. Design of study: Concordance-based language analysis of spoken data. Method: 373 consultations with 40 doctors in a UK general practice setting were transcribed and scrutinised for metaphoric expressions, using ‘concordancing’ software. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used in analysis.
- 9. results Doctors use mechanical metaphors to explain disease and speak of themselves as ‘problem-solvers’ and ‘controllers of disease’. Patients employ a range of vivid metaphors, but fewer metaphors of machines and problem/solution. They use metaphors to describe symptoms and are more likely to use metaphoric language at the interface of physical and psychological symptoms (eg. ‘tension’, ‘stress’).
- 11. Design of study: Concordancing-related corpus analysis and non-concordancing related corpus analysis.
- 12. Method: 15 research articles from prestigious scientific journals in the field of medicine were analysed by Group A (students doing analysis using concordancer) and Group B (doing analysis through “traditional way”).
