Introduction
• One of the challenging and noblest professions
in our country is teaching.
• The development of Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) has given new
dimension to the pedagogy.
• Teachers should equip themselves on par with
the development of ICT and only then they can
discharge their duty effectively and usefully.
• ICT not only facilitates delivery of
instruction, but also learning process.
• ICT develops international collaboration
and networking in the field of education
and professional development.
• Many evidence are available in support of
ICT enabled - teaching and learning.
Integrating ICTs in Teacher Training
• A lot of research evidences are available
in support of integrating ICT in teacher
training.
• ICT can modify the way of teaching and
can make the teaching process more
student – centered or student – friendly in
nature and promote collaborative
activities.
• Realizing the need and the importance of
ICT many countries have started providing
ICT teacher training.
• Because of the development and influence
of ICT in teaching, many teachers find it
difficult to make use of ICT in teaching,
many teachers find it difficult to make use
of ICT effectively in teaching and learning
and hence a separate training on use of
ICT in teaching and learning for teachers
in required.
• ICT teacher training can take many forms.
• Teachers can be trained to learn HOW to
use ICT or teachers can be trained via
ICT.
• ICT can be used as a core or a
complementary means to the teacher
training process.
Need and importance of integrating
ICT in teacher training
• To identify the essential ICT skills required
for teachers.
• To create an awareness of ICT
components.
• To make them know the different
educational applications of ICT.
• To provide a thorough knowledge on ICT
gadgets in teaching and learning.
• To train them to learn how to use ICT in
teaching and learning.
• To provide training to them via ICT.
• To train them to develop ICT – based
curricullum.
• To provide necessary training to develop
an ICT – based pedagogy.
• To identify the difficulties in implementing
ICT in teacher education.
• To develop ICT – based resources for
teaching and learning.
New Needs of teachers
• Because of the changes brought about by ICT,
many schools have started introducing the
development of technological skills specifically
into curriculum at different level.
• The core benefits of ICT can only be achieved,
provided the teachers are aware of its
importance and specific contribution to teaching
and learning process or in general to teacher
education.
• They are now in a position to cultivate a positive
attitude towards cultural, pedagogical
sociological awareness to understand the future
make – up of schools, their clients and
programmes”.
• The next challenge faced by the teachers is to
strike the right balance between maintaining
some traditional aspects that have contributed
extensively to teacher education for years, and
capitalizing on the new opportunities presented
by ICT.
• Another new need for teachers is to make them
prepare for new pedagogy with ICT application.
ICT skills needed for teachers
• General
• Using word processor
• Using presentation software
• Using a spread sheet
• Using the internet
• Using e – mail
• Using a database.
General
The teacher needs to be able to
 Load and run software, including from a CD
Rom
 Delete and rename files and move and copy
them both to the different location on the same
machine and from one machine to another.
 Open, save and print files using word –
processing and presentation software and a
spreadsheet.
 Copy information from one of these application
to another.
Using a word processor
The teacher needs to be able to
 Create a new document, including creating one
from a pre existing template.
 Enter and amend text, including using a spell –
checker.
 Change the size, font and justification of text.
 Create and modify tables, including changing the
number of rows and columns they contain.
 Create and format headers and footers
 Insert a picture into a document and change its
position and size.
Using presentation software
The teacher needs to be able to
 Run an existing presentation
 Create a new presentation, including using a
‘design template’ or ‘auto content wizard’
 Amend the content of an existing presentation,
including the size, font, justification and position of
text.
 Create text boxes on a slide and enter and alter
text.
 Insert a picture into a slide.
 Create links between slides.
 Animate transitions both within and between slides.
Using a spreadsheet
The teacher needs to be able to
 Create a new worksheet, including using one from a pre
– existing template
 Enter text and numbers in cells and amend a cell’s
existing content.
 Format cells, rows and columns, including creating
borders around selected cells.
 Create formulate to add, subtract, multiply and divide the
contents of cells, rows and columns of data.
 Be able to copy a formula from one cell to another so
that it still functions in the new location.
 Use the ‘chart wizard’ to create a variety of graphs from
appropriate sets of data.
Using the internet
The teacher needs to be able to
 Access a website given its URL
 Store names and addresses of web pages as
‘bookmarks’ or ‘favourites’
 Navigate the internet by using links on a website
and the forward and back buttons on a web
browser.
 Use a search engine to find specific information
on the internet, including being bale to narrow
down and extend searches using the logical
operators AND and OR
Using e – mail
The teacher needs to be able to
Set up an e – mail account with a provider
such as “Hotmail”
Read, reply to and forward to others e –
mail messages sent to you, including
messages with attached files.
Compose and send e – mail messages,
including messages with attached files.
Using a database
• The teacher needs to be able to
Search an existing database for
information
Add new records and modify old ones in
an existing database.
Create a new database, selecting types of
fields appropriate to the data being
entered.
Motivation of Teachers’ Integration
in Teacher Education (w.r.t ICT)
• Technology advances have resulted in new
opportunities to use ICT to improve learning and
instruction.
• Much technology has been placed in schools
such as computer, educational software, etc and
much training for teachers’ skills and knowledge
of teaching with technology has been provided.
• Many teachers still do not integrate technology
effectively even when they have the technology
and initial training.
