The Face Of Physician Assisted Suicide Or Pas
In 2014, Brittany Maynard became the face for those supporting physician assisted suicide or PAS. At
29 years old and newly married, Maynard was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and immediately
underwent a partial craniotomy and partial resection. Her tumor came back much stronger, however,
and in April she was given six months to live. Maynard s only treatment option to slow but not stop
the growth of the tumor was full brain radiation, but she opted against this because of the unavoidable
side effects of hair loss, first degree burns, and the inevitability of death. In consideration of hospice,
Maynard feared becoming resistant to morphine and losing her cognitive, motor, and verbal skills.
Even more so, she did not want her family ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As of April, 2015, forms of euthanasia and PAS have been legalized in six countries and four US
states (Marker). In North America, the only country where PAS is completely legal currently is
Canada. In a 1995 verdict made by the Canadian Senate (Boudreau and Somerville 1 12):
[t]he court ruled that laws making physician assisted death illegal violated Canadians constitutional
rights in cases where an adult clearly consents to the termination of life and has a grievous and
irremediable medical condition. (Larson)
This decision has been met with a mostly positive response, with statistics showing that more than
four out of every five of the Canadian general public approve of the decision. They attribute this to the
freedom of choice to one s body and medical care that the law modifications permit. Another reason
surrounding this response is that:
[...] it is no longer a crime to commit or attempt to commit suicide [...] why, then, is it a crime to assist
it? What is the difference between suicide and assisted suicide that justifies making the one lawful and
the other a crime, that justifies allowing some this choice, while denying it to others? (Larson)

The Origins of Star Wars
The Origins of Star Wars Not so long ago in a galaxy a bit closer to home, George Lucas crafted one
of the most iconic movies of all time. That movie was soon followed by a series of mind bending
movies that captured the hearts and minds of generations up to this day. From light saber duels to the
destructive power of the Death Star, Star Wars is one movie saga that we are all familiar with. But
how did this captivating series come to be? How did it all begin? Just how did George Lucas come up
with such brilliant ideas for Star Wars? What are the true origins of Star Wars? Not many people know
that Star Wars isn t the product of George Lucas own imagination. As a matter of fact, George Lucas
actually got most of his ideas and concepts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From their philosophies to the way they do battle to the way the dress, the powerful Jedi Knights of
the Star Wars galaxy have clear parallelisms with our galaxy s Samurais. Examples of these
parallelisms are the robes that the Jedi used are quite similar to the robes that the Samurai used,
another one is the Japanese katana that the Samurais used in battle and the Light Saber that the Jedi
used to keep the peace. George Lucas also borrowed ideas from other samurai movies such as Sanjuro
and Yojimbo both by Akira Kurosawa. Apart from having Asian origins, Star Wars also has Western
background. One of the earliest science fiction graphic novels known to man is Flash Gordon. It s
clear why George Lucas took some of Flash Gordon s concepts and applied it with his own films.
Flash Gordon however, also borrowed it s concepts with an even earlier sci fi comic strip: Buck
Rogers. One of the clearest similarities between Star Wars and Flash Gordon is the signature roll up
that is present in the start of every Star Wars movie. One less noticeable similarity is the vocabulary of
Flash Gordon (which was also taken from Buck Rogers). Since Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers were
the only ones that mentioned of futuristic space travel and intergalactic battles, George Lucas based
the vocabulary of Star Wars on these two science fiction works of his time. The technology and the
gadgets of Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers were also of great influence

Preservation of Innocence In The Catcher in the Rye Essay
Themes in literary works are central, recurring ideas or messages that allow us to understand more
deeply about the characters. It is a perception about life or human nature that is often shared with the
reader. In The Catcher in the Rye, there are several themes that can be found in the words and actions
of the narrator, Holden Caulfield. The dominating theme in this novel is the preservation of innocence,
especially of children. We can see this throughout the novel, as Holden strives to preserve innocence
in himself and others. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden s outlook in life is either the innocence of
childhood or the cruelty of adulthood. He believes that the innocence of childhood is very valuable
and it should be protected from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Holden is talking about protecting the children so they will not experience the cruelty of the adult
world. If he catches the children before they fall, he will preserve their innocence and keep them from
the cruelties of the adult world. Holden s only desire and goal in life is to be the catcher in the rye
because is the only job that is appealing to him where he can shows his love and protection for
childhood innocence, That s all I d do all day. I d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it s
crazy, but that s the only thing I d really like to be (173). Holden does not want adolescents to become
adults because he believes that adults are corrupt and he wants to protect them from this corruptness.
This is seen when Holden tries to erase the swearing words on the walls of an elementary school that
Phoebe attends. Holden angrily tells us, ... I saw something that drove me crazy. Somebody d written
Fuck you on the wall... I thought how Phoebe and all the other little kids would see it, and how they d
wonder what the hell it meant... (201). Holden was angered because this proves that the innocent
world of children has already been corrupted by the profanities of the adult world. In addition,
profanity in such places like an elementary school distresses him because he associates it with Phoebe,
little kids, and innocence. Thus, their innocence is tainted by these profanity words on the walls. He
does not feel comfortable allowing small children to be

Schuurvy Research Paper
Scurvy is a nutritional disease that stems from a lack of Vitamin C. I chose this as my topic because I
have always been interested in history and how historically on ships it was difficult to have fresh fruit
aboard because they would spoil on long trips and instead they would have meats and foods that could
be preserved with heavy amounts of salt. Scurvy was first documented as a disease by Hippocrates
and was discovered by ancient Egyptians in 1550 but people would often forget eating Vitamin C is an
effective cure for the disease. In the 13th century people often suffered from Scurvy. Eventually the
explorers wizened up to this and the Portuguese planted fruit trees and vegetables that they could
harvest on their way home from journeys

Italian Unification Research Paper
Italy Post 1815
There were many different empires on the European continent before Napoleon s rule. As many as 20
Italian city states existed, all of which were tiny. Before unification, Italy had not been unified since
the Roman Empire. The Congress of Vienna restored pre Napoleonic independent governments. The
Austrian Empire opposed unification because it controlled Northeastern Italy at the time. The papacy
(the Pope and the church) also opposed unification because it feared persecution. Whether the new
Italy would be a confederation, a republic, or a monarchy was not yet decided.

Energy Balanced Balance
Watch your portion sizes! The amount you eat or drink plays an important role in your energy balance
strategy. You may be eating more than you realize. Some common food portions can equal the amount
that is recommended for the whole day. For example, one bagel may weigh up to 5 ounces, which
equals the entire day s allotment of grains for someone on a 1600 calorie MyPyramid Plan.
A good way to see how big your portions really are is to measure the size of bowls, glasses, cups, and
plates you usually use. This can help you choose sensible portions. To see what 1 cup, ½ cup, or 1
ounce of some different foods looks like, visit the food gallery and find some of the foods in each
group that you eat.

Pros And Cons Of Artificial Turf Fields
Artificial turf fields are becoming very popular throughout the world with over 5,500 fields in North
America . Turf fields are mostly being used for soccer and many of the major clubs around the world
are using turf fields. Are these fields that are becoming so popular throughout the world good for the
environment, our health, and the community?
As with any major issue there is always a debate with two sides. In San Francisco the divide is
between the soccer players and the environmentalists. The soccer players want more artificial turf
because it gives them a reliable safe and easy way to participate in the sport they love. The
environmentalists say that artificial turf fields are harmful to the community because they leach toxic
chemicals into the air and the water. Also, the use of turf in children s playgrounds exposes kids to
chemicals that are very harmful at a young age. The voters decided to install artificial turf fields. The
response was overwhelmingly positive from the soccer players but from the people who wanted the
best for the environment were disappointment. There was a great divide caused by the debate around
artificial fields. It is never good for a community to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The plastic may not be so good for the environment but the infill is what the manufacturers call crumb
rubber, rubber made out of recycled car tires. This is a great use for something that would otherwise
sit in a landfill if it were not repurposed for artificial turf fields. Also, artificial turf fields are good for
the environment because the do not have to be watered and they require less maintenance. Turf doesn t
use pesticides so those harmful chemicals don t have an affect on health and the water table. Turf is
more durable and therefore needs less maintenance. These are some great aspects of artificial turf but
there are also many bad

Leonardo Da Vinci And Machiavelli s Role In Secular Italy
In my final short summary, I will be explaining both Leonardo da Vinci and Machiavelli s roles in
secular Italy. To represent this, I will examine how their legacies were effected and finally, I will then
conclude with my final opinions on these two philosophers and the journey s they both endeavored.
Although Leonardo and Machiavelli both appeared to leave Florence in unfavorable ways, one could
argue that both men ultimately learned from failure. The men spent their time in a non religious
Florence in an alliance, however, they both used this in attempts to thrive on their own. Leonardo
spent his time working on his art; but, more importantly he was attempting to build a canal that would
lead from the Arno river to the sea. Machiavelli worked by using his political power to supervise the
Florence government during this project, however, it eventually failed. After the Arno diversion was
abandoned, Leonardo and Niccolò did what truly great artists, scientists, and leaders often do in ...

I justify this by saying if it were not for yet another military failure, Machiavelli may never have been
imprisoned which lead him to write The Prince (Masters). As for Leonardo, his failures also led him to
even greater success, Leonardo started life as a lowly apprentice and ended as a valued advisor to a
powerful foreign king (Masters pg. 193). In this short summary I discussed the roles that both
Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolò Machiavelli were a part of in secular Italy, along with a brief outlook
on what life was like after they separated. If were to get the chance to write another paper on this
topic, I feel that it would be beneficial to talk more in detail about both the Arno river failure and also
discuss the other failures they faced before diverging their

Bip Oil Spill
The BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill tells the tragic story of what happened on the Deepwater Horizon
drilling rig back in April 2010. The rig, leased from another vendor, was digging a well on the
Macondo slope in the Gulf when it exploded and fatally killed eleven employees and injured
seventeen others (Crandall, Parnell, Spillan, 2014). Not to mention, five million barrels of oil spilled
into the sea causing an environmental issue that lasted more than ninety days. Several underlying
factors went into play that contributed to the oil crisis. One of those factors was the safety device on
the well referred to as a blowout preventor (BOP). The purpose of this device is to stop the flow of oil
and gas in case of an emergency situation. Apparently, if the BOP does not operate correctly, the oil
and gas can mix causing a disaster for employees, the environment, and the machinery. According to
the case study by Crandall, Parnell, and Spillan (2014), someone bumped a control switch that altered
the stability of the blowout. With that, no investigation was conducted to make sure the equipment
was in a stable state. Another factor was cementing the drill case to make the structure stable. This
process involves drilling a hole into the well and inserting a case into the shaft that has to have cement
in between. There are two safety aspects of this; one keeps the shaft sealed from hydrocarbon gasses
and oil until the extraction takes place, and the other holds the metal casing centered in the bore that
uses twenty one centralizers as an added measure to keep it sturdy. The BP employees only had six

Taking a Look at Vertex
Vertex claims the inventory costs of VLite are high, therefore tying practice is required to enhance
sales of VLite. It is indisputable that the Commission recognizes pro competitive effects of tying, such
as lowering manufacturing or distribution costs by economies of scale, which is found to be important
in this industry. According to para. 30 of the Guidance, Vertex has to prove that the tying is
indispensible to achieve the same efficiencies. Also, following Hilti Vertex needs to show that it has
taken other actions if possible in order to lower the inventory costs. Given such a high standard of
proof, it is very likely that Vertex would be found violated the Article 102(d) by contractual tying.
1. Conditional Rebate Scheme
Vertex introduced standardized and individualized target rebates to distributors in the Western Europe.
Target rebates may not be problematic if they are indeed genuine quantity based, but a target rebate
may be found abusive if it limits the buyer s freedom to choose (Michelin I). Nonetheless, rebate
schemes may result in suction effect the dominant firm lowers the average price of its products and
captures contestable sales which the firm was unable to capture before. Vertex offered two largest

Anglo Saxon And Germanic Culture In Beowulf
Anglo Saxon and Germanic culture has a very deep culture, in which they are known in history. As
this epic poem is told, Beowulf embodies this culture in his heroic instances during this epic poem.
With the Anglo Saxon and Germanic culture being the backbone of this poem s culture, Beowulf
exemplifies what this culture is and what they stand for. As the story is told and develops with
Beowulf, he himself shows through his heroic instances what it means to be a heroic figure from this
ancient culture having qualities of honor, loyalty, and strength. Beowulf s first showing of his loyalty
was when he heard about Grendel and decided to go defeat this monster. When he heard about
Grendel, Hygelac s thane was on home ground, over in Geatland. There was no one else like him
alive. In his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, high born and powerful. He ordered a boat that
would ply the waves. He announced his plan: to sail the swan s road and search out that king, the
famous prince who needed defenders (Beowulf, Line 195). His decision to go and help the Danes was
one of debt, for he knew of Hrothgar and had helped his father during exile. As Beowulf and his men
arrived to Hrothgar s kingdom, his guards didn t know about this man coming, but when they saw him
they were just excited knowing he could be the one. The leader of the troop unlocked his word hoard;
the distinguished one delivered this answer: We belong by birth to the Geat people mission and owe

All Seven Deadly Sins Committed At Church Bake Sale
The deadly sins that are committed so easily we don t even consider them deadly any longer. Sins such
as Pride, lust, and gluttony. The Catholic Church teaches us that there are seven deadly sins, greed,
sloth, envy, lust, gluttony, pride, and wrath. According to the satirical newspaper The Onion s short
article All Seven Deadly Sins Committed at Church Bake Sale, these sins are so frequently perpetrated
in everyday society that even a holy church function is unable to go without. The author mentions, In
total, 347 individual acts of sin were committed at the bake sale, with nearly every attendee
committing at least one of the seven deadly sins... (201)
The sin of pride. A sin we all carry out daily. Whether it be the proud parent whose child made the
honor roll and Flaunts that fact with a bumper sticker on their Toyota Camry, or even the Essex county
college student who displays their school spirit around campus. The sin of pride is so consistently
committed, it s become more second nature and less described a sin. The short article provides a
plethora of examples depicting pride at the church bake sale. For one, the author states that one vendor

think a sin like this would be the only one avoided by anything having to do with a church. However,

the analyte was unknown A, an originally clear solution of hydrochloric acid that turned hot pink after
having added approximately 14.50 and 14.40 milliliters of sodium hydroxide, for trials 1 and 2
respectively. The molarity calculated for this acid was found to be 0.86 M, but this value is not
accurate because the indicator showed that too much sodium hydroxide was added to the solution,
eventually passing the endpoint, resulting in a vibrant pink color instead of the intended light pink
hue. The true concentration of this acid must then be less ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Part A. The mass of KHC8H4O4 is measured to the nearest milligram; however, the volume of water
in which it is dissolved is never of concern the water is even added to the wall of the Erlenmeyer flask
during the titration. Explain why water added to the KHC8H4O4 has no effect on the date, whereas
water added to the NaOH solution may drastically affect the data.
The presence of water is of little significance to the final results of the experiment involving
KHC8H4O4 because this compound is not one that is very hygroscopic, usually being unable to
absorb any water that surrounds it (Beran, 2014). However, this is not the case with sodium hydroxide
because unlike the aforementioned compound, sodium hydroxide is known to be highly hygroscopic,
and if it were to come into contact with water, the concentration of 0.14893 M that was used in this
experiment would change to a lower value, after having been diluted by the water (Beran, 2014).
5. Part B.2. The wall of the Erlenmeyer flask is occasionally rinsed with water from the wash bottle
(see Part A.6) during the analysis of the acid solution. Will this technique result in the molar
concentration of the acid solution being reported as too high, too low, or unaffected?

The Impact Of Food Quality On Food Industry
Food quality plays an important role in food industry. Currently, consumers demands on higher quality
of food products are increasing rapidly. Therefore, food industry is interested in analytical methods
which can provide low cost, fast, precise, and non destructive analysis on product quality (Gowen et
al., 2007). The researches on non destructive food quality analyzing technologies have gain significant
amount of interests (Chen et al., 2013; Lind and Murhed, 2012).
Machine vision, as a novel non destructive analyzing technology, has been widely studied and
employed in various industries (Davies, 2012). It can be applied to inspect raw materials or products
during manufacturing (Davies, 2013). Recently the applications of machine vision in food industry are
increasing rapidly since the developments in camera technology and the processing power of
computer hardware (Chen et al., 2013). Machine vision technology has many advantages such as
improving quality, increasing throughput, reducing waste, and reducing labor (Lind and Murhed,
2012). Generally, machine vision system includes image acquisition section and image processing
statistical pattern recognition section (Davies, 2013). The images processed by machine vision system
could be grey scale images, binary images, and conventional images took by normal camera; it also
could be images acquired from hyperspectral imaging, magnetic imaging, X ray imaging, ultrasound

The Pros And Cons Of Factory Doors
Author, Chuck Palahniuk once said. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs so we
can buy things we don t need. The topic addressed in the following paragraphs will be about the types
of chemicals that are used in clothing production, the purpose that they serve, and to discuss the
possible harms to people and the environment. The clothes made in the past were made out of cotton
and silk but now, not so much. Clothes nowadays are made out of synthetic material that is detrimental
to our health. However, the public is in the dark about what is really going on behind the factory
doors. The constant use of toxic chemicals in the clothes we buy and use everyday is horrible the
public should be aware of the things that is happening behind factory doors because it can affect our
health and the environment. First of all the United States spends too much on clothes. According to

Another purely spatial analysis was run to scan for clusters with low risk rates with a maximum
window size set to 50% as before. The resulting cluster was made of the counties of the northern most
part of Texas, all of the coastal counties of Louisiana and Mississippi and the most western county in
Alabama, which in Figure 9 12 is represented by regions 57 71. There is a relative risk of 0 and a p

We still die, and often we are not remembered.
Ralegh conveys this somber realization through his plain style of verse. Though he describes the
mistress in detail, she is not the subject of his poem. Ralegh uses Love s mistress and her destruction
as a vehicle to address the destructive nature of Time. He approaches that subject in the plain style,
using short, proverbial phrases intended to make the reader aware of time and mutability. The poem
contains several lines that are made entirely of one syllable words, which draw out the time it takes to
read the line. Contrast lines 31 32 in Nature, that washed her hands in milk with lines 8 and 10 in
Christopher Marlowe s The Passionate Shepherd to His Love (p. 989). Marlowe describes the land in
which he lives, where Melodious birds sing madrigals, and beds are made of a thousand fragrant
posies . Marlowe s verse sounds quick and light when spoken, simply because he uses fewer words in
an eight syllable line. Ralegh, in contrast, often uses seven or eight words to fill the same eight
syllable line: Oh, cruel Time! which takes in trust/Our youth, our joys, and all we have... Line 32
especially requires that the reader take more time to pronounce each syllable, which adds weight to
each word.
Both structure and style are used to deliver meaning in Nature, that washed her hands

The Long-Term Psychological Effects Of Abortion

Free Will And The Door For Free Action
This paper contends that Sider is wrong. With a revised interpretation of free will and internalization
of weight bestowal, indeterminacy might open the door for free action. We will discuss what this
paper means by free action and indeterminacy, explore why Sider thinks indeterminacy is
incompatible with free action, object Sider s arguments using Nozick s proposal of self subsuming
weight bestowal, and investigate possible counter arguments to Nozick s proposition.
The libertarian view requires a free action to be non random, uncaused and could have been done
otherwise . However, indeterminacy suggests that a prior event provides a clue of a range of probable
future events. Thus the indeterministic version of event is not uncaused. To explore the possibility of
indeterminacy to be compatible with free action, we have to tolerate this shortcoming. Therefore in
this essay, we will regard a person who acts freely as someone who could have non randomly chosen
other than the chosen non random event. Whether the event is caused or uncaused is driven out of the
equation.
Sider argues that an indeterministic world governed by the law of probability inherently entails
decision to be made by chance. Suppose Amir has 75%, 20%, and 5% probabilities of choosing a
sandwich, a burger, and an orange for his lunch respectively. Imagine one hundred parallel worlds
exist. In 75 worlds, Amir would choose a sandwich; in 25 worlds, Amir would choose a burger; in 5
worlds, Amir would choose

Gertrude s Tragic End Of Shakespeare s Hamlet
John (Zhiyao) Ma
21L.009, Shakespeare
March 11, 2015
Gertrude s Tragic End The nature of Shakespeare s plays, with its notable lack of stage directions,
gives way to multiple different interpretations of the characters, plot, and even of the purpose of the
play itself. The character of Gertrude is no exception. Gertrude s character and motives, being left
ambiguous, have been interpreted in many different ways in various productions of Hamlet. Was she
implicit in the death of King Hamlet, or was she merely a clueless bystander? Did she drink the poison
as an act of motherly self sacrifice, or was it an accidental tragedy? Zefferelli s Hamlet (1990) and
Almereyda s Hamlet (2000) provide two different interpretations on Gertrude s characterization. In
particular, there exist substantial differences in their renditions of Gertrude s death while Almereyda
portrays her death as a noble suicide, Zefferelli paints her death as a by product of her unceasing lust
for pleasure. Furthermore, in that scene, we also notice a difference in Hamlet s attitude towards
Gertrude. By analyzing these points along with other scenes within the context of the entire film, we
manage to develop an understanding of Almereyda s and Zefferelli s view on Gertrude and how use
that to develop the tragic conclusion of the final scene. Almereyda s rendition of Gertrude s death
portrays her death as a noble act of self sacrifice. [Clip 1 Gertrude s end]. At the beginning of the

did not rely on the Eastern Front against Russia, but rather on the Western front (First paragraph in

The Legality of Marijuana
As members of a sophisticated and modern society, to participate in the day to day social life there are
a few things we must act in accordance with. We must follow the natural laws that the societies have
placed in order, and must establish guidelines by understanding their moral and ethical obligations.
They are the foundations of our day to day life. Whether we choose to obey or disobey the norms and
regulations of our social environment is determined by the way we appeal to their distinct morals and
ethics.
There are many ethical situations in our society on which various people have various different
opinions. The legality of marijuana is one such situation in the society regarding the morals and ethics.

They require accurate measurements of utility. Utilitarianism has to make very strong claims on what
is right and wrong on a very vague concept such as happiness. Utilitarianism may find more use when
determining how a military may provide relief aid to an allied country or determine how much
funding an organization may allocate to any given entity. When the utility is something more concrete
than mental and the idea of benefit is more relative. Utilitarianism would not work in a situation where
a hospital must choose between a child and a celebrity both on the waiting list for a lifesaving organ
transplant.
The two very different philosophical views react differently to the subject of marijuana legalization.
Utilitarianism, for instance, would almost certainly legalize marijuana. This is a simple answer,
because the way that Utilitarianism is laid out, the end goal is the greatest aggregate happiness. In an
ideal Utilitarian world, there would be no laws, limits, or codes, save that everyone should be as happy
as they can be. This may seem too good to be true, as though it would go to far and society would not
be able to recover, but that is not the case. Things that are pleasurable in moderation are not always so
in excess. Some person with Mill s philosophy would only use marijuana if it brought them the
greatest happiness possible. It stands to reason, and indeed Mill elaborates

Teen Suicide Research Essay
Teenage suicide is a major issue in today s society; suicide is the intentional taking of one s own life
and is a momentous issue that should be addressed as quickly as possible. Teen suicide has been the
topic of numerous news headlines; yet, it still continues to have a detrimental effect on today s youth.
In the United States, suicide is currently the eighth leading cause of death for Americans, and for
young adults between the ages of 15 and 24, suicide is the third leading cause of death. This is
extremely startling due to the fact that teen suicide is one of the most preventable forms of death.

ages, and the results of bullying can be disastrous and devastating; suicide is just one of many
examples of a consequence of bullying. We need to all come together and think of a plan that can help
stop bullying. People don t understand how terrible it feels to get bullied until it happens to them. We
are the ones doing the bullying, whether it s directly or indirectly, so it is up to us to put an end to it.
As previously shown, there are quite a number of myths surrounding the topic of teenage suicide;
when the myths are addressed and made clear, it is easier for people to get a better understanding of
teen suicide and how to deal with it. Many people have come to believe that you cannot tell when

are common beliefs, it does not mean they are necessarily correct.

The Disadvantages Of Sexual Diversity Of Reproducing Species
One advantage of sexual reproduction is that these organisms generally have greater genetic diversity.
Organisms who reproduce asexually, on the other hand, are essentially clones of each other. This
means that their predators can adapt to hunt them easily. The diversity of sexually reproducing
organisms allows them to stay a step ahead of their predators because of their genetic variations and
their ability to adapt via natural selection (Brockmyre 2015).
The Red Queen Hypothesis states that species must keep evolving to keep up. It is based on a quote
from Through the Looking Glass: It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place.
Predators are evolving to best hunt their prey so the prey must keep evolving to survive (Brockmyre
2015).
Robert Vrijenhoek observed these processes in topminnows. The ponds where these fish live include
fish that reproduce sexually and fish that produce assexually. This population is affected by parasites
that cause black spot disease. He found that more of the assexual fish were afftected than the sexual
fish. This is because when the parasites were able to effeccrively attack one assexual fish, they could
attack all of them as they are clones. This didn t apply to sexually producing fish as they were all
different ( The Red Queen 2001). Sexual reproduction has caused monogamy in some species. In
these species, it is essential for the father to help raise the young, but the father won t help unless he
believes that the

a bullet hole he had already made. (history.com, Patton) He was also selected to be on the Olympic but
they were canceled because of World War one. Another interesting fact is that Patton believed in

King Lear And Hamlet Essay
The concept of madness and those who suffer from its hold is something that is apparent in both
Shakespeare s Hamlet and King Lear, both plays treat madness in similar ways it is often not
understood by the characters, it is often feminized and there are characters who choose to assume
madness for their own specific reasons. Another similarity is that both plays have two central
characters that suffer from madness, each has one character whose madness is real and each has a
character whose madness is faked. It is said the mad characters in these plays are given a type of
freedom to do and say what they please and are able to speak a certain kind of truth that would not be

The Unrealistic Expectations Of Social Media
It is no secret that social media has taken over a lot of our time, and perception on society. It
influences our day to day lives without us really knowing. Social media usually portrays one s life to
be perfect, or it makes us feel like one s life needs to be perfect. For this reason being, social media
can be a bad thing. In The Social Networks by Neal Gabler, he explains how media has taken away the
meaning of friendship or anything real . In the long run, social media makes things seem better than
they actually are, it gives us unrealistic expectations for our friend and family interactions, which kills
the chance of having actual friendships because our expectations are so high. So, here are the reasons

Fake friends is not referring to people whom you cannot trust, but to the friends that you have on
Facebook and do not actually see in real life. This is a trend that has been seen on most social media
websites. It is also a lot harder to develop true friendships in real life because, as mentioned before,
our unrealistic expectations of friends has made us want the kinds of friends we see on TV. Facebook,
in fact, only underscores how much traditional friendship friendship in which you meet, talk and share
has become an anachronism and how much being friended is an ironic term, expresses Gabler. As
mentioned before Social media networks like Facebook make it seem as though we have more friends
than we actually do. However, in reality we do not really know most of the people we are friends with
on Facebook because being with friends on Facebook is more about the number and not if you
actually know the person or not. Not only do we not know most of our friends on our friends list, but
we get lazy to actually go out and make real friends. It is just so much easier to stay at home and click
the add button. Gabler also points out, One study found that Americans had one third fewer nonfamily
confidants than they had 20 years earlier, and 25% had no one in whom to confide whatsoever.
Another study of 3,000 Americans found that on

On July 1st, 1867 the colonies of British North America joined together in an act of Confederation, in
an effort to resist mounting pressure from both inside and outside the region, including pressure from
the USA and Great Britain, and from social and economic problems inside the colonies. The influence
exerted from the US after the Civil war, including their desire to expand their country, coupled with
raids from external groups and internal problems with trade and transportation influenced the colonies

Manifest Destiny was a term that originated during the 1840 s. It expressed the belief that it was Anglo

Customer had to contact service support in America. * Communication was really poor, no reply was
made on EBay s behalf through phone or email. * The operator was rude and lacked communication
skills. * No service recovery was in place, or customers weren t provided with another option. * Level
of attention was low, the operator didn t care and showed frustration really easily.
What could or should have been done differently
This whole incident could have been prevented if there was actually a customer service support based
in Australia, or if EBay actively replied to customers regarding their specific issues, instead of
replying via an automated email system that sent out generic responses. The operator could have
handled the situation much more efficiently, instead of letting the situation control her attitude. It
seems that EBay had no recovery strategy in place to combat these complex issues and they only rely
on a computer system to solve problems that require

VAP is a growing problem in health care facilities which increases the cost of patient care and
increases patient care time, hospital length of stay, and patient morbidity. Ventilator associated
pneumonia increases healthcare costs by more than $40,000 per hospitalized patient (Lisboa, Kollef,
Rello, 2008). Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services plan to stop paying hospitals for necessary
care caused by preventable complications including nosocomial infections resulting in unintended
fiscal circumstances (Lisboa et al.). 2 The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) established
recommended guidelines to decrease the risk of VAP. It is these best practice interventions that nurses
should follow when caring for mechanically ventilated patients. The 2003 CDC guidelines reported
that 63% of admitted patients in the ICU have oral colonization associated with a pathogen resulting
from VAP (Cason, Tyner, Saunders, Broome, 2007). The CDC provided a set of seven guidelines to
reduce risks related to hand washing, wearing gloves, suctioning, elevated head of bed (HOB),
education, oral hygiene program, and use of antiseptic rinse. Studies suggested that best practices for
reducing VAP were not consistently implemented. According to the Centers for Disease Control,
Pseudomonas aeruginosa and gram positive Staphylococcus aureus were the two most common
bacteria linked to VAP (Babcock et al., 2004). Pseudomonas

United Kingdom
UNITED KINGDOM GEOGRAPHY OF UNITED KINGDOM  The United Kingdom (UK) is
located just west of the mainland of Europe. It is made up of several islands, the largest of which is
Great Britain. Great Britain is made up of Scotland in the north, England in the southeast and Wales in
the southwest. Northern Ireland is the northwestern part of Ireland, a separate island nation just west
of Great Britain, but it is also part of the UK. There has been violence in Northern Ireland for
centuries because of religious and political conflict there. Because ocean waters surround the UK, it
has a mild, rainy climate. The country s farmers produce about 60 percent of the food the UK needs.
From 1980 90 the farming became more mechanized, with farmers ... Show more content on

 It is a recent but common myth among some people is that food in Great Britain is poor tasting and
ill prepared. While there were many influences that contributed to the decline of food in the U.K.
during the 20th century, there has since been a rebirth of English cuisine, due to the decrease of mass
scale production of food that lead to an increase in quality, the rise of television cooking shows that
led to a greater awareness of quality cooking among the working class, and the fusion of cuisine from
continental Europe and beyond. Salmon Kedgeree (British Indian Salmon) Ingredients 2 eggs 1 small
onion, chopped 1¾ cups water ½ teaspoon salt 8 oz. can of salmon ¾ cup white rice 1 Tablespoon
unsalted butter 2 Tablespoons chopped parsley leaves 1 Tablespoon lemon juice Lemon wedges as
garnish, if desired Procedure  Prepare hardboiled eggs: Place eggs in a saucepan and cover them
with cold water.  Put the saucepan on a burner over medium high heat and wait until the water just
begins to simmer. (Tiny bubbles will form and move slowly to the surface of the water.) Lower the
heat, and simmer the eggs for 15 minutes.  Remove from heat and run cold water into the pan to stop
the cooking. Allow the eggs to cool, and then remove the shells carefully. Cut the eggs lengthwise into
quarters.  Cook the rice: Prepare rice according to instructions on

Summary Of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
Sabrina Delgado
Period 7 One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest Essay Prompt: 2. Does McMurphy win or lose his battle
with Nurse Ratched? Justify your answer with three specific examples from the text. Red haired,
rowdy, and raunchy are three words to describe the crazy, infamous McMurphy, while the Nurse is a
prude, prideful and frigid ruler who is power hungry over the mental institution. These two mixed
together lead to a cunning war of dominance in the hospital. One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is a
1962 novel by Ken Kesey depicting the patients at an Oregon psychiatric hospital and how the of the
patients and staff change when a new patient, Randle McMurphy arrives. From McMurphy s devious
schemes to manipulate the system to get what he wants, to the Nurse sabotaging his friends opinions
of him in order to gain the upper hand, this superiority struggle has a definite winner at the end of the
novel: McMurphy. McMurphy wins this battle with the Nurse because although he died at the end, he
still overcomes and finds ways to manipulate Nurse Ratched s harsh rules and regulations throughout
the book, and leaves an effect on Ratched and the ward that proves the influence and power he had
over all of them.
The first instance of McMurphy s winning streak was by getting his way and overcoming Nurse
Ratched s rulings and regulations. One instance is when McMurphy comes up with the idea of using
the tub room as a second day room and uses Dr. Spivey to help him. Quote:

Arthritis Personal Statement
During my junior year of high school, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Arthritis walk in
Philadelphia. Volunteering at the event allowed me to gain deeper intellectual engagement and also
influenced my future career. At the event, I had the opportunity to meet several people who suffered
with Arthritis. When observing the many effects that Arthritis had on people it widened my eyes to the
lack of healthcare in society. By the end of the day a lightbulb went off in my head and I knew for sure
that I wanted a career in medicine. I was certain that a career in health services was for me because
each person with arthritis warmed my heart and my mind began wondering about endless ways to
better their situation. Since I was a young girl I was sensitive, caring, and always trying to find a way
to help someone out of a bad situation. There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Careers in the medical field will allow me to experience a life I never had, but always dreamed of. I
will finally be able to support my family financially without struggling and I will be able to say I am
the first doctor in my family. That alone is enough to prove to myself that I actually made it. While the
arthritis walk made it obvious to me that I was passionate about working in the medical field I wasn t
really sure about the field of medicine I wanted to specialize in. I was unsure about the field of
medicine I wanted to specialize in until last year. Last year I was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis,
which is an autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes the fluctuating of muscle weakness and
fatigue. Muscle weakness makes it difficult for patients to chew, talk, swallow, breathe, and control
eye and facial movements. As of now, there is not a cure for this disease, but there are treatments.
Some ways to treat Myasthenia Gravis are immunosuppressants, plasmapheresis, and the removal of
the thymus gland. Suffering from Myasthenia Gravis has made me realize that after

The Lost Son Poem Analysis
Theodore Roethke s The Lost Son : Theme of Death Theodore Roethke s 1948 The Lost Son is
perhaps one of his best known poems. It is composed of five sections, which highlight a period or
periods of great sadness for the speaker. From the beginning, it seems that the speaker is also the
author. The five sections are The Flight, The Pit, The Gibber, The Return, and It was beginning winter.
Roethke s work is a journey of sorts as the author indulges the audience in his emotions that reveal his
desolation and sorrow. Eventually, the speaker concludes his extended disposition, and it is apparent
that his griefs are far from over. However, he can only hope for a brighter future. The purpose of this
paper is to analyze the poem and highlight the theme of death expressed by the author.
The first part of the poem, The Flight, is laced with sadness. It reveals the author s feelings about the
loss of identity as well as the anxiety surrounding death. Roethke starts by referring to Woodlawn
cemetery. This, in turn, sets the stage for what is an eerie and frightening narration. He portrays not
just fear but terrible fear. Perhaps the term flight is metaphorical to mean traveling to another world; a
spiritual realm. Woodlawn sets the stage for death. This is where the speaker dies and takes the
infamous trip. At first instance, he presents himself as dead waiting to be consumed by worms or
trodden over by snails. However, a further reading of the poem reveals that it is

  • 2. The Face Of Physician Assisted Suicide Or Pas In 2014, Brittany Maynard became the face for those supporting physician assisted suicide or PAS. At 29 years old and newly married, Maynard was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and immediately underwent a partial craniotomy and partial resection. Her tumor came back much stronger, however, and in April she was given six months to live. Maynard s only treatment option to slow but not stop the growth of the tumor was full brain radiation, but she opted against this because of the unavoidable side effects of hair loss, first degree burns, and the inevitability of death. In consideration of hospice, Maynard feared becoming resistant to morphine and losing her cognitive, motor, and verbal skills. Even more so, she did not want her family ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As of April, 2015, forms of euthanasia and PAS have been legalized in six countries and four US states (Marker). In North America, the only country where PAS is completely legal currently is Canada. In a 1995 verdict made by the Canadian Senate (Boudreau and Somerville 1 12): [t]he court ruled that laws making physician assisted death illegal violated Canadians constitutional rights in cases where an adult clearly consents to the termination of life and has a grievous and irremediable medical condition. (Larson) This decision has been met with a mostly positive response, with statistics showing that more than four out of every five of the Canadian general public approve of the decision. They attribute this to the freedom of choice to one s body and medical care that the law modifications permit. Another reason surrounding this response is that: [...] it is no longer a crime to commit or attempt to commit suicide [...] why, then, is it a crime to assist it? What is the difference between suicide and assisted suicide that justifies making the one lawful and the other a crime, that justifies allowing some this choice, while denying it to others? That movie was soon followed by a series of mind bending movies that captured the hearts and minds of generations up to this day. From light saber duels to the destructive power of the Death Star, Star Wars is one movie saga that we are all familiar with. But how did this captivating series come to be? How did it all begin? Just how did George Lucas come up with such brilliant ideas for Star Wars? What are the true origins of Star Wars? From their philosophies to the way they do battle to the way the dress, the powerful Jedi Knights of the Star Wars galaxy have clear parallelisms with our galaxy s Samurais. Examples of these parallelisms are the robes that the Jedi used are quite similar to the robes that the Samurai used, another one is the Japanese katana that the Samurais used in battle and the Light Saber that the Jedi used to keep the peace. George Lucas also borrowed ideas from other samurai movies such as Sanjuro and Yojimbo both by Akira Kurosawa. Apart from having Asian origins, Star Wars also has Western background. One of the earliest science fiction graphic novels known to man is Flash Gordon. It s clear why George Lucas took some of Flash Gordon s concepts and applied it with his own films. Flash Gordon however, also borrowed it s concepts with an even earlier sci fi comic strip: Buck Rogers. One of the clearest similarities between Star Wars and Flash Gordon is the signature roll up that is present in the start of every Star Wars movie. One less noticeable similarity is the vocabulary of Flash Gordon (which was also taken from Buck Rogers). Since Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers were the only ones that mentioned of futuristic space travel and intergalactic battles, George Lucas based the vocabulary of Star Wars on these two science fiction works of his time. The technology and the gadgets of Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers were also of great influence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Preservation of Innocence In The Catcher in the Rye Essay Themes in literary works are central, recurring ideas or messages that allow us to understand more deeply about the characters. It is a perception about life or human nature that is often shared with the reader. In The Catcher in the Rye, there are several themes that can be found in the words and actions of the narrator, Holden Caulfield. The dominating theme in this novel is the preservation of innocence, especially of children. We can see this throughout the novel, as Holden strives to preserve innocence in himself and others. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden s outlook in life is either the innocence of childhood or the cruelty of adulthood. He believes that the innocence of childhood is very valuable and it should be protected from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Holden is talking about protecting the children so they will not experience the cruelty of the adult world. If he catches the children before they fall, he will preserve their innocence and keep them from the cruelties of the adult world. Holden s only desire and goal in life is to be the catcher in the rye because is the only job that is appealing to him where he can shows his love and protection for childhood innocence, That s all I d do all day. I d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it s crazy, but that s the only thing I d really like to be (173). Holden does not want adolescents to become adults because he believes that adults are corrupt and he wants to protect them from this corruptness. This is seen when Holden tries to erase the swearing words on the walls of an elementary school that Phoebe attends. Holden angrily tells us, ... I saw something that drove me crazy. Somebody d written Fuck you on the wall... I thought how Phoebe and all the other little kids would see it, and how they d wonder what the hell it meant... (201). Holden was angered because this proves that the innocent world of children has already been corrupted by the profanities of the adult world. In addition, profanity in such places like an elementary school distresses him because he associates it with Phoebe, little kids, and innocence. Thus, their innocence is tainted by these profanity words on the walls. He does not feel comfortable allowing small children to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I chose this as my topic because I have always been interested in history and how historically on ships it was difficult to have fresh fruit aboard because they would spoil on long trips and instead they would have meats and foods that could be preserved with heavy amounts of salt. Scurvy was first documented as a disease by Hippocrates and was discovered by ancient Egyptians in 1550 but people would often forget eating Vitamin C is an effective cure for the disease. In the 13th century people often suffered from Scurvy. Turf fields are mostly being used for soccer and many of the major clubs around the world are using turf fields. Are these fields that are becoming so popular throughout the world good for the environment, our health, and the community? As with any major issue there is always a debate with two sides. In San Francisco the divide is between the soccer players and the environmentalists. The soccer players want more artificial turf because it gives them a reliable safe and easy way to participate in the sport they love. The environmentalists say that artificial turf fields are harmful to the community because they leach toxic chemicals into the air and the water. Also, the use of turf in children s playgrounds exposes kids to chemicals that are very harmful at a young age. The voters decided to install artificial turf fields. • 9. Leonardo Da Vinci And Machiavelli s Role In Secular Italy In my final short summary, I will be explaining both Leonardo da Vinci and Machiavelli s roles in secular Italy. To represent this, I will examine how their legacies were effected and finally, I will then conclude with my final opinions on these two philosophers and the journey s they both endeavored. Although Leonardo and Machiavelli both appeared to leave Florence in unfavorable ways, one could argue that both men ultimately learned from failure. The men spent their time in a non religious Florence in an alliance, however, they both used this in attempts to thrive on their own. Leonardo spent his time working on his art; but, more importantly he was attempting to build a canal that would lead from the Arno river to the sea. Machiavelli worked by using his political power to supervise the Florence government during this project, however, it eventually failed. In this short summary I discussed the roles that both Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolò Machiavelli were a part of in secular Italy, along with a brief outlook on what life was like after they separated. • 10. Bip Oil Spill The BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill tells the tragic story of what happened on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig back in April 2010. The rig, leased from another vendor, was digging a well on the Macondo slope in the Gulf when it exploded and fatally killed eleven employees and injured seventeen others (Crandall, Parnell, Spillan, 2014). Not to mention, five million barrels of oil spilled into the sea causing an environmental issue that lasted more than ninety days. Several underlying factors went into play that contributed to the oil crisis. One of those factors was the safety device on the well referred to as a blowout preventor (BOP). The purpose of this device is to stop the flow of oil and gas in case of an emergency situation. Apparently, if the BOP does not operate correctly, the oil and gas can mix causing a disaster for employees, the environment, and the machinery. According to the case study by Crandall, Parnell, and Spillan (2014), someone bumped a control switch that altered the stability of the blowout. With that, no investigation was conducted to make sure the equipment was in a stable state. Another factor was cementing the drill case to make the structure stable. This process involves drilling a hole into the well and inserting a case into the shaft that has to have cement in between. There are two safety aspects of this; one keeps the shaft sealed from hydrocarbon gasses and oil until the extraction takes place, and the other holds the metal casing centered in the bore that uses twenty one centralizers as an added measure to keep it sturdy. It is indisputable that the Commission recognizes pro competitive effects of tying, such as lowering manufacturing or distribution costs by economies of scale, which is found to be important in this industry. As the story is told and develops with Beowulf, he himself shows through his heroic instances what it means to be a heroic figure from this ancient culture having qualities of honor, loyalty, and strength. Beowulf s first showing of his loyalty was when he heard about Grendel and decided to go defeat this monster. When he heard about Grendel, Hygelac s thane was on home ground, over in Geatland. There was no one else like him alive. In his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, high born and powerful. He ordered a boat that would ply the waves. He announced his plan: to sail the swan s road and search out that king, the famous prince who needed defenders (Beowulf, Line 195). His decision to go and help the Danes was one of debt, for he knew of Hrothgar and had helped his father during exile. As Beowulf and his men arrived to Hrothgar s kingdom, his guards didn t know about this man coming, but when they saw him they were just excited knowing he could be the one. Since the p value of 0.000016 is less than alpha of 0.05, the null hypothesis that there is an equal chance of being bitten by a shark is rejected; it can be concluded that there is a lower risk in this region than all other regions studied as represented in Figures 9 12. When the retrospective space time analysis is run in SaTScanTM for high rates, produced four clusters, but none of the p values are less than alpha at 0.05. It appears that from 2004 to 2005, the risk of being bitten by a shark was heightened, and there is a relative risk of 22.46 (see Figure 13). Analysis of Ralegh s Nature, that washed her hands in milk Nature, that washed her hands in milk can be divided structurally into two halves; the first three stanzas constitute the first half, and the last three stanzas make up the second half. Each stanza in the first half corresponds to a stanza in the second half. The first stanza describes the temperament of Nature, who is, above all, creative. This first stanza of the first half corresponds to stanza four, the first stanza in the second half of the poem. Stanza four divulges the nature of Time, who, unlike Nature, is ultimately a destroyer. Time is introduced as the enemy of Nature, and Ralegh points out that not only does Nature despise Time, she has good reason for it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We still die, and often we are not remembered. Ralegh conveys this somber realization through his plain style of verse. Though he describes the mistress in detail, she is not the subject of his poem. Ralegh uses Love s mistress and her destruction as a vehicle to address the destructive nature of Time. He approaches that subject in the plain style, using short, proverbial phrases intended to make the reader aware of time and mutability. The poem contains several lines that are made entirely of one syllable words, which draw out the time it takes to read the line. Contrast lines 31 32 in Nature, that washed her hands in milk with lines 8 and 10 in Christopher Marlowe s The Passionate Shepherd to His Love (p. 989). Marlowe describes the land in which he lives, where Melodious birds sing madrigals, and beds are made of a thousand fragrant posies . Marlowe s verse sounds quick and light when spoken, simply because he uses fewer words in an eight syllable line. Ralegh, in contrast, often uses seven or eight words to fill the same eight syllable line: Oh, cruel Time! which takes in trust/Our youth, our joys, and all we have... Line 32 especially requires that the reader take more time to pronounce each syllable, which adds weight to each word. • 26. Free Will And The Door For Free Action This paper contends that Sider is wrong. With a revised interpretation of free will and internalization of weight bestowal, indeterminacy might open the door for free action. We will discuss what this paper means by free action and indeterminacy, explore why Sider thinks indeterminacy is incompatible with free action, object Sider s arguments using Nozick s proposal of self subsuming weight bestowal, and investigate possible counter arguments to Nozick s proposition. The libertarian view requires a free action to be non random, uncaused and could have been done otherwise . However, indeterminacy suggests that a prior event provides a clue of a range of probable future events. Thus the indeterministic version of event is not uncaused. To explore the possibility of indeterminacy to be compatible with free action, we have to tolerate this shortcoming. Therefore in this essay, we will regard a person who acts freely as someone who could have non randomly chosen other than the chosen non random event. Whether the event is caused or uncaused is driven out of the equation. Sider argues that an indeterministic world governed by the law of probability inherently entails decision to be made by chance. Suppose Amir has 75%, 20%, and 5% probabilities of choosing a sandwich, a burger, and an orange for his lunch respectively. Imagine one hundred parallel worlds exist. Gertrude s Tragic End Of Shakespeare s Hamlet John (Zhiyao) Ma 21L.009, Shakespeare March 11, 2015 Gertrude s Tragic End The nature of Shakespeare s plays, with its notable lack of stage directions, gives way to multiple different interpretations of the characters, plot, and even of the purpose of the play itself. The character of Gertrude is no exception. Gertrude s character and motives, being left ambiguous, have been interpreted in many different ways in various productions of Hamlet. Was she implicit in the death of King Hamlet, or was she merely a clueless bystander? Did she drink the poison as an act of motherly self sacrifice, or was it an accidental tragedy? Zefferelli s Hamlet (1990) and Almereyda s Hamlet (2000) provide two different interpretations on Gertrude s characterization. In particular, there exist substantial differences in their renditions of Gertrude s death while Almereyda portrays her death as a noble suicide, Zefferelli paints her death as a by product of her unceasing lust for pleasure. Furthermore, in that scene, we also notice a difference in Hamlet s attitude towards Gertrude. By analyzing these points along with other scenes within the context of the entire film, we manage to develop an understanding of Almereyda s and Zefferelli s view on Gertrude and how use that to develop the tragic conclusion of the final scene. Almereyda s rendition of Gertrude s death portrays her death as a noble act of self sacrifice. [Clip 1 Gertrude s end]. At the beginning of the fencing duel, we see her ... • 34. The Disadvantages Of Sexual Diversity Of Reproducing Species One advantage of sexual reproduction is that these organisms generally have greater genetic diversity. Organisms who reproduce asexually, on the other hand, are essentially clones of each other. This means that their predators can adapt to hunt them easily. The diversity of sexually reproducing organisms allows them to stay a step ahead of their predators because of their genetic variations and their ability to adapt via natural selection (Brockmyre 2015). The Red Queen Hypothesis states that species must keep evolving to keep up. It is based on a quote from Through the Looking Glass: It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. Predators are evolving to best hunt their prey so the prey must keep evolving to survive (Brockmyre 2015). Robert Vrijenhoek observed these processes in topminnows. The ponds where these fish live include fish that reproduce sexually and fish that produce assexually. This population is affected by parasites that cause black spot disease. He found that more of the assexual fish were afftected than the sexual fish. This is because when the parasites were able to effeccrively attack one assexual fish, they could attack all of them as they are clones. This didn t apply to sexually producing fish as they were all different ( The Red Queen 2001). Sexual reproduction has caused monogamy in some species. For this reason being, social media can be a bad thing. In The Social Networks by Neal Gabler, he explains how media has taken away the meaning of friendship or anything real . Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After one hour of trying to figure out what was happening to my business, I was more confused than ever. I sent an email to EBay the day after trying to enquire why my store was cancelled and EBay replied back with an automated email with information that was not relevant to my case. What made the Incident dissatisfying * There was no customer support system set up in Australia. * Customer had to contact service support in America. * Communication was really poor, no reply was made on EBay s behalf through phone or email. * The operator was rude and lacked communication skills. * No service recovery was in place, or customers weren t provided with another option. * Level of attention was low, the operator didn t care and showed frustration really easily. What could or should have been done differently This whole incident could have been prevented if there was actually a customer service support based in Australia, or if EBay actively replied to customers regarding their specific issues, instead of replying via an automated email system that sent out generic responses. The operator could have handled the situation much more efficiently, instead of letting the situation control her attitude. It seems that EBay had no recovery strategy in place to combat these complex issues and they only rely on a computer system to solve problems that require ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

VAP is a growing problem in health care facilities which increases the cost of patient care and increases patient care time, hospital length of stay, and patient morbidity. Ventilator associated pneumonia increases healthcare costs by more than $40,000 per hospitalized patient (Lisboa, Kollef, Rello, 2008). Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services plan to stop paying hospitals for necessary care caused by preventable complications including nosocomial infections resulting in unintended fiscal circumstances (Lisboa et al.). 2 The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) established recommended guidelines to decrease the risk of VAP. It is these best practice interventions that nurses should follow when caring for mechanically ventilated patients. The 2003 CDC guidelines reported that 63% of admitted patients in the ICU have oral colonization associated with a pathogen resulting from VAP (Cason, Tyner, Saunders, Broome, 2007). The CDC provided a set of seven guidelines to reduce risks related to hand washing, wearing gloves, suctioning, elevated head of bed (HOB), education, oral hygiene program, and use of antiseptic rinse. Studies suggested that best practices for reducing VAP were not consistently implemented. According to the Centers for Disease Control, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and gram positive Staphylococcus aureus were the two most common bacteria linked to VAP (Babcock et al., 2004). Pseudomonas ... It is made up of several islands, the largest of which is Great Britain. Great Britain is made up of Scotland in the north, England in the southeast and Wales in the southwest. Northern Ireland is the northwestern part of Ireland, a separate island nation just west of Great Britain, but it is also part of the UK. There has been violence in Northern Ireland for centuries because of religious and political conflict there. Because ocean waters surround the UK, it has a mild, rainy climate. The country s farmers produce about 60 percent of the food the UK needs. From 1980 90 the farming became more mechanized, with farmers ... While there were many influences that contributed to the decline of food in the U.K. during the 20th century, there has since been a rebirth of English cuisine, due to the decrease of mass scale production of food that lead to an increase in quality, the rise of television cooking shows that led to a greater awareness of quality cooking among the working class, and the fusion of cuisine from continental Europe and beyond. • 45. Summary Of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest Sabrina Delgado Period 7 One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest Essay Prompt: 2. Does McMurphy win or lose his battle with Nurse Ratched? Justify your answer with three specific examples from the text. Red haired, rowdy, and raunchy are three words to describe the crazy, infamous McMurphy, while the Nurse is a prude, prideful and frigid ruler who is power hungry over the mental institution. These two mixed together lead to a cunning war of dominance in the hospital. One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is a 1962 novel by Ken Kesey depicting the patients at an Oregon psychiatric hospital and how the of the patients and staff change when a new patient, Randle McMurphy arrives. From McMurphy s devious schemes to manipulate the system to get what he wants, to the Nurse sabotaging his friends opinions of him in order to gain the upper hand, this superiority struggle has a definite winner at the end of the novel: McMurphy. McMurphy wins this battle with the Nurse because although he died at the end, he still overcomes and finds ways to manipulate Nurse Ratched s harsh rules and regulations throughout the book, and leaves an effect on Ratched and the ward that proves the influence and power he had over all of them. The first instance of McMurphy s winning streak was by getting his way and overcoming Nurse Ratched s rulings and regulations. One instance is when McMurphy comes up with the idea of using the tub room as a second day room and uses Dr. Spivey to help him. Quote: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. Arthritis Personal Statement During my junior year of high school, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Arthritis walk in Philadelphia. Volunteering at the event allowed me to gain deeper intellectual engagement and also influenced my future career. At the event, I had the opportunity to meet several people who suffered with Arthritis. When observing the many effects that Arthritis had on people it widened my eyes to the lack of healthcare in society. By the end of the day a lightbulb went off in my head and I knew for sure that I wanted a career in medicine. I was certain that a career in health services was for me because each person with arthritis warmed my heart and my mind began wondering about endless ways to better their situation. Since I was a young girl I was sensitive, caring, and always trying to find a way to help someone out of a bad situation. There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Careers in the medical field will allow me to experience a life I never had, but always dreamed of. I will finally be able to support my family financially without struggling and I will be able to say I am the first doctor in my family. That alone is enough to prove to myself that I actually made it. While the arthritis walk made it obvious to me that I was passionate about working in the medical field I wasn t really sure about the field of medicine I wanted to specialize in. I was unsure about the field of medicine I wanted to specialize in until last year. Last year I was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, which is an autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes the fluctuating of muscle weakness and fatigue. Muscle weakness makes it difficult for patients to chew, talk, swallow, breathe, and control eye and facial movements. As of now, there is not a cure for this disease, but there are treatments. Some ways to treat Myasthenia Gravis are immunosuppressants, plasmapheresis, and the removal of the thymus gland. Suffering from Myasthenia Gravis has made me realize that after ... • 47. The Lost Son Poem Analysis Theodore Roethke s The Lost Son : Theme of Death Theodore Roethke s 1948 The Lost Son is perhaps one of his best known poems. It is composed of five sections, which highlight a period or periods of great sadness for the speaker. From the beginning, it seems that the speaker is also the author. The five sections are The Flight, The Pit, The Gibber, The Return, and It was beginning winter. Roethke s work is a journey of sorts as the author indulges the audience in his emotions that reveal his desolation and sorrow. Eventually, the speaker concludes his extended disposition, and it is apparent that his griefs are far from over. However, he can only hope for a brighter future. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the poem and highlight the theme of death expressed by the author. The first part of the poem, The Flight, is laced with sadness. It reveals the author s feelings about the loss of identity as well as the anxiety surrounding death. Roethke starts by referring to Woodlawn cemetery. This, in turn, sets the stage for what is an eerie and frightening narration. He portrays not just fear but terrible fear. Perhaps the term flight is metaphorical to mean traveling to another world; a spiritual realm. Woodlawn sets the stage for death. This is where the speaker dies and takes the infamous trip. At first instance, he presents himself as dead waiting to be consumed by worms or trodden over by snails. However, a further reading of the poem reveals that it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
