Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
• To be able to describe the development of online assessment systems (i.e.
stakeholders, assessment features, outcomes based education)
• To be able to identify implementation tips for sustainable delivery of an
online assessment system.
Abstract

Assessment is integral to education management. Assessment implementation requires collaboration among
faculty, students, examination office, facilities management and IT. The educational framework for assessments are
driven by the university learning philosophy, international standards and good governance. Assessment has several
purposes, it can be used summatively to determine whether the student’s learning outcomes are achieved or
formatively in helping students evaluate their current learning and further strengthen future learning. There are
however, some common education management challenges that limit the delivery of assessment for learning
concept. Areas to improve were assessment blueprinting, turnaround time for result processing, audit trail,
psychometric analysis and providing feedback based on learning outcomes. We developed an online assessment
system (OAS) to overcome some of the above mentioned challenges. An OAS that is integrated, reliable, secure and
valid was developed and contextualized for a range of assessment tools used in health professions programmes,
including performance-based examinations. Implementation features include item banking, analysis and
blueprinting based on learning outcomes and difficulty level, standard setting, immediate and individualized
feedback. Key and positive features related to outcomes based education including transparency, measurability,
relevancy, individualisation and timelines are delivered in OAS. However OAS development took longer than
anticipated due to complexity of user needs and communication between stakeholders to ensure correct
interpretation of performance indicators. Tips for educators suggests include the need for continuous stakeholder
feedback and engagement, to ensure that the users’ requirements are met. For sustainability of implementation
continuous training and support for stakeholders with resource allocation are necessary.

professions education is in Faculty development, Assessment and Innovative Teaching
Learning methods. Vishna has shared her experience and expertise in health professions
education via invitations to speak at conferences, conducting faculty development workshops,
consultancies and collaborative research, appreciating that she has also learnt very much from
these collaborative sessions with other educators. As Dean of Teaching and Learning at IMU,
she leads and engages with faculty across the five schools in the University on strategic

DESIGNING 21ST CENTURY
TEACHING & LEARNING:
USING TPACK

Senior Assistant Professor, Deputy Dean (Research),

Title of Presentation:
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:
• Adopt and design an innovative inter-disciplinary modules using the IICA Model
• Develop their students’ 21st century skills (collaboration, real-world problem
solving, knowledge construction, skilled communication, and using ICT for
knowledge construction), and produce research-informed practices and products.
Abstract
This paper presents a case on how teacher candidates (graduate students of Master of Teaching at Sultan Hassanal
Bolkiah Institute of Education) design innovative inter-disciplinary curriculum and assessment scheme using
prominent educational frameworks such as TPACK (Technological Pedagogical & Content Knowledge), and 21CTL
(21st Century Teaching practice and Learning outcomes) design. The TPACK module (one of core modules of the
Master of Teaching Programme) is designed by embedding the modified TPACK, Evaluative Technological,
Pedagogical, Assessment, Context & Content Knowledge (E-TPAC2K) framework, and 21CTL Design with lessons
evaluation through an Innovative Inter-disciplinary Curriculum and Assessment (IICA) model for teacher candidates’
initial teacher preparation. The IICA model involves the process of teacher candidates’ collaboration in designing
curriculum using Evaluative-TPAC2K framework and planning the lesson using the 21CTL Design; implementation of
the curriculum and lessons as a cycle of action-research interventions, and assessing the effectiveness of the
lessons for students conceptual understanding, and evaluating the impact on students’ attainment of 21st century
skills. The purpose of this case presentation is to demonstrate how the IICA model is adopted as an implementation
strategy for preparing and developing graduate students’ 21st century innovative and inter-disciplinary teaching skills
through the Evaluative-TPAC2K framework and 21CTL Design. As an outcome of the presentation, it is expected that
educators of Higher Education Institution can adopt and design an innovative inter-disciplinary modules using the
IICA Model, and develop their students’ 21st century skills (collaboration, real-world problem solving, knowledge
construction, skilled communication, and using ICT for knowledge construction), and produce research-informed
practices and products.

Editor's Notes

  • #18 Key Points For certain key points, I’ll simply place a few words on a slide without any other visuals, especially when I can’t find an appropriate picture and I want the words to linger in the minds of my audience. Again, I’ll always tell a story that brings the key point alive for the audience while I keep the words on the screen, effectively “burning“ an image in their mind.
