Colour Research
1.
2. There are two clear sections
to this colour scheme- the
pale muted pastels of the
top two thirds of the image,
and the brighter and
warmer colour of the
bottom.
By combining colours that
blend well together (the soft
baby blue and pink) but also
contrasting them against
much stronger colours (the
dark reds and purples)
creates an overall colour
scheme that is very
aesthetically pleasing to the
audience.
3. The combination of the font
in simple white, in stark
contrast to the brighter
image colours draws the
audiences’ eyes immediately
to this cover.
Since the lighting is very
unnatural the shadows on
the models face are
emphasised and
differentiate the image from
other magazines which just
use simple portrait shots.
Since red and green are
complementary, the
contrast is made more
pleasant to the eye by how
well the colours work
together.
4. Unlike the other covers the
colour scheme here is much
more broad, but rather than
smoothly blending colours
together a sense of contrast
is still created by the harsh,
blocked shapes.
I think the use of bold,
individual colours next to
the natural skin tone of the
model creates a
juxtaposition that is
pleasing for the audience.
Although the colour scheme
is quite busy, the bright
pastels soften the overall
tone and allow the liveliness
to show through without
being overwhelming.
5. In comparison to the other
covers, this has a much
more edgy vibe as it’s main
colours are much darker
blacks and greys.
The bright pops of neon
green and orange are what
makes this image very
striking and would allow it
to garner more interest than
plainer looking covers.
Since the image is of a
woman but the colours are
very bold and harsh, the
colour palette gives an
overall grungy feel to the
magazine style which
instantly shows the
audience that is an edgy
production.
6. Overall I think I will use
a colour scheme that
has two groups of
contrasting colours. By
using a mixture of
brighter, pastel shades
and darker greys and
deep blues I feel my
magazine will be both
visually appealing to
the audience and follow
a similar style to other
magazines of the same
genre.
Since I haven’t yet
taken the images I will
use throughout my
magazine I haven’t set
a single colour scheme
to use as I plan to tie it
into the tones of the
photos I use.
In order to create a
colour theme that is
cohesive with my
images there are
programs which I will
add my photos too to
create a colour palette
specifically from those
images.
