Allegory Of The Cave Vs Plato s Cave
By writing The Allegory of the Cave or Plato s Cave, Plato tries to convey to people that they must
escape the world of illusions and shadows and look at it with other eyes because that is the only way
that they can find the true view of the world. In other words what I mean by other eyes is that people
should see not only what is presented to them but see what is the real message hidden behind the
illusion. People should think outside the box in order to break away from the delusions and discover
the reality. Plato s allegory tells us about people s way of thinking about the world. In the essay I will
explain why not everyone wants to open his or her eyes, how people are misguided by illusions, and
why sometimes it is hard it is to see the reality. To begin with, we as a people have the ability to see
but not everyone actually sees things, and often we believe in what is presented to us blindly. In the
The Allegory of the Cave or Plato s Cave is written that the power to learn is presented in everyone s
soul and that the instrument with which each learns is like eye that cannot be turned around from
darkness to light without turning the whole body. By that he means that everybody has the ability to
learn things but not everybody wants to see learn them. In other words, the power to learn is ability
that everybody has but not everyone uses it properly. Plato s allegory reveals that education is the craft
concerned with doing this very thing, this turning around, and which

The Importance Of Gaston s Hoarding In America
What I summarized from the introduction was that the Gaston s had been trapped by there own trash
that they had gathered over the years. it was tons of items from coke bottles to news papers to other
daily item that they had kept over the years and where unable to part with. The Gaston s hoarding
grew with them, which left unable, to part with their trash and trapped inside the there home. Today in
America anywhere from 3 and 6 million people are thought to be hoarders. Most of us are not like the
Gaston s instead of hoarding in our homes we hoard in the landfills of America instead. The average
American produces 7.1 pounds of trash per day just for there self. Across a lifetime each person has

How To Become A Liberal Essay
Liberal, conservative and socialist enter bar
Liberal: Good evening sirs.
Conservative+socialist: Good evening to you too.
Liberal: Look at that man over there he seems depressed. He s been out of his job for months and the
government aren t doing anything about.
Conservative: Just out of curiousity, how would you go about helping that man?
Liberal: Well there are many things we can do. We should not just help the man but we should help
everyone. Allow me to explain. Firstly, the economy has entered another trough in the business cycle.
I think that the only way out of this trough is through strong government intervention. For example, if
we were to cut taxes, we would put more money into the economy, because people would have more

Laissez faire as they say. I would like to remind you of Bennett s new deal. The government tried to
get too involved in the economy. Bennett s new deal promised more progressive taxation,
unemployment insurance, health insurance, closer regulation of working conditions and social
reforms. This deathbed conversion to these liberal ideas ultimately cost this man the election. The o to
ottawa trek is another example of failed government intervention. The relief camps made things worse
and backfired. Liberalism has failed and the regina riots that followed are testament to this.
Socialist: we would not have had the need for relief camps if people had enough of it anyway
Socialist: People would not have been buying on the margin if there were restrictions to the amount
they could invest. This would have made the depression entirely avoidable and the failure of the relief
camps would have never happened. It was capitalist greed that caused the riots; not government
intervention.
Conservative: the regina manifesto shows the truth about the canadian economy. The economy has
always been conservative. No one wants socialism. Don t you remember Woodworth and the CCF. No
one wanted them. The social credit party too. Bill Aberharts radical socialist ideas were never

Copyright Law Limitations
Since the U.S. Copyright Act became law in 1790, the copyright term has been increasing. Copyright
is an intangible property right granted by federal statue to the author or originator of certain literacy or
outside productions. The first major change was the Copyright Act of 1976, it gave American authors
the right to print, re print, or publish their work for 14 years and then to renew for another 14. In 1998,
Congress passed the Sonny Bono Copyright Act also known as the Mickey Mouse Copyright Act,
which extended protection from life of the author plus 70 years as well as taking away the need for a
copyright notice and registration. The result was that many whom did not have copyright protection
due to lack of copyright notice and registration were now protected. Following the Mickey Mouse
Copyright Act, they passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act which intended to create a new
updated version of copyright laws to deal with the challenges of regulating digital material. It aimed to
protect the rights of both copyright owners and consumers, and without it copyright owners would
have a difficult time obtaining legal action against those who copy copyrighted material. Copyright act
laws should be extended for various reasons, one is that, it gives the creator more time to profit from it
and if the creator dies early on it will be passed on to their family. Knowing that work will be
copyrighted for a longer time gives them a chance to encourage their creativity and

The Pros And Cons Of Pesticides
Abstract
Chemistry is considered from a lot of people as the science of the future. The ability of chemical
products to contribute the increase of the standard of living of the society, it seems inexhaustible. A
field that grew due to chemistry is pesticides. Pesticides are organic or non organic substances that
comes from natural or artificial origins, that they are applied against natural enemies such as insects,
fungi s, pests, but also any other substance that protects preharvest the crops in the field or the
glasshouse or later(post harvest), during the storage period of the agricultural products. Every year,
large quantities of crop productions are being destroyed from those factors. Fertilizers are not
considered as pesticides.

First of all, they don t require any special knowledge to use them, they are easy and available to use
from everyone. They are highly effective to neutralize and control pests. Their treatments act rapidly
with minimal lag time. Pesticides can be applied over large and wide areas to control the pest
populations. There are pesticides that are no effective, non chemical, reliable, friendly alternatives that
are available for those who seek non chemical pesticides. In IPM programs, pesticides are applied
when there are no effective enough alternatives that are available or not effective to control pest
populations from reaching the damaging levels. The application of pesticide is generally cheaper to
alternative ways for protecting the crops. The main point of the science is to maximize the advantages
of pesticides and minimize their any potential risk. Whenever a pesticide treatment is needed, the
application of that should be made based on the Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) guidelines.
Hazards of pesticides
Direct impact on humans
The world wide deaths and chronic diseases due to pesticide poisoning is about 1 million per year. The
vulnerable groups to pesticides are the workers in the pesticide factory and agricultural farm workers
because they are exposed to various toxic chemicals e.g pesticides, toxic solvents etc. Certain
pesticides are labeled as endocrine disruptors because they are mimicking or

Analysis Of The Short Story Arafat Ta Bir Cocuk
The short story, Arafat ta Bir Çocuk , has two protagonist characters who are mainly children living in
a foreign country. Yilmaz is one of them. He is the other of the society in which people generally
adopt certain kinds of belief, they have certain cultural values; therefore, there is no room for others
and these others are side lined in every activity in social life. Hence, the effect of being room less on
the character, Yılmaz, in a society he does not belong to sometimes reaches a serious point because of
the religious, ethnic, cultural features of the society and the fact that the people living in it are not
open to another face of world. Religion is the most important factor that affects Yılmaz s place on
society profoundly and makes him feel as an other and, it does cause him to take serious action against
local inhabitants of the country. Yilmaz is a Muslim; however, the country he lives in is Christian and
there are some crucial differences between them which render Yılmaz unnatural to the society and
marginal. Ethnic and cultural differences between Yılmaz and local inhabitants also play a great role
in badly construction of Yılmaz s psychological state. The two great dominant pictures of the world,
Orient (East) and Occident (West), are always in clash in the story. Yilmaz is an Oriental figure in
Occidental area; hence, his oriental possessions are cumbersome burdens on his shoulders in every
part of life. One of them that engenders

Summary Of Troubling Clarity
Another important research issue that is important in the research process is the writing style and the
use of language. In her work Troubling Clarity: The Politics of Accessible Language , Patti Lather
focuses on the role of language in research. Specifically, she argues that language has the ability to
make a message more or less accessible. To this end, Lather discusses her experimental approach of
writing research. In this approach, she attempts to write a text with multiple voices and one that can
speak to a broad public audience. She argues that it is important for researchers to engage a language
and a style of writing that does just not inform the readers but also provokes them to think critically
and develop their own views and understandings

four that were selected, the Soldier Civilian Divide, War is Hell, Bravery and Cowardice, and lastly,
Homecoming.
Kevin started the discussion with his connection of passages that have to do with the idea of
homecoming. I think that homecoming plays a significant part of war, whether it be a soldier or group
of soldiers leaving the front line for good, or simply coming home for a short time. It s such a crucial
and important part of the war narrative and Kevin s quotes really put an emphasis on that. He
discusses the great importance of the idea and the actual act of coming home, and

The Effects Of Shale Gas On Global Warming And Climate...

The Effect of Shale Gas on Global Warming and Climate Change and the Environment Global
warming is a very disputed issue due to the fact that in every situation, there are two sides to a story.
Some believe global warming is not an issue seeing as there have been trends in the past that indicate
that the world changes constantly and that it will once again come to its natural order. Like geologist
Charles Lyell once stated with his idea of uniformitarianism, that the Earth is shaped by the same
processes still in operation today. Also, James Hutton stated that, The future will resemble the past ,
meaning that the events happening today, have already occurred, therefore they will happen once

Shale is a soft, fine sedimentary rock that formed from consolidated mud or clay. It contains shale gas
that is trapped within the shale formations which are rich in petroleum and natural gas. Studies have
shown that 3.6% up to 7.9% of methane from shale gas escapes through venting and leaks into the
atmosphere over a lifetime of a well. Methane emissions are considered to be at least 30% higher in
concentration than conventional gas. That is, pools in which wells can be drilled so that oil and natural
gas flow naturally and can be pumped to the surface. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas with a
global warming potential that is far greater than that of carbon dioxide. Shale gas contributes
substantially to the greenhouse gas footprint on a shorter time scale, and results have shown that it
leaves a 20% greater footprint than coal. Natural gas is being used as a transitional fuel which allows
for further dependence on fossil fuels, yet reducing the green house gasses (GHG) when compared to
oil and coal. In the 1990 s the United States produced its oil and gas through the use of conventional
reservoirs, but in 2009, unconventional production took the lead. There is really not much of a
difference between conventional and unconventional gas, but they are described as a sponge and clay
production process. Gas is extracted far more easily though the use of conventional production, but in

Georgia Endangered Species
Conservation biologists indicate that as many as half of the Earth s plants and animals may become
endangered by the twenty second century. Georgia has sixty two plant and animals protected under the
federal Endangered Species Act. Among these sixty two species are the Coosawattee Crayfish , the
Altamaha Spinymussel and the West Indian Manatee. These three species are on the verge of becoming
extinct because of human interaction with their natural habitats. The Coosawattee Crayfish (cambarus

The West Indian manatee or sea cow is a manatee, and the largest surviving member of the aquatic
mammal order Sirenia. An article published by The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species states, The
number of mature individuals is currently estimated to number less than 10,000 (based on combined
population estimates for the Florida and Antillean subspecies) and is expected to decline at a rate of at
least 10% over the course of three generations (given a generation time of ~20 years) as a result of
both habitat loss and anthropogenic factors (1). By this, the article means that the population of The
West Indian Manatee is far below average. The population is expected to decline by a rate of at least
10% over the next three generations. This is mainly due to human influence and loss of habitat. The
same article goes on to state, Threats to the Florida manatee encompass catastrophic natural events
and anthropogenic factors (1). This means that the decrease in population of The West Indian Manatee
is partially caused by disastrous natural occurrences and human factors. The IUCN Red List of
Threatened Species states, About half of adult mortality rangewide is attributable to human related
causes, primarily watercraft collisions (1). This means that half of the deaths of The West Indian
Manatee are caused by boating accidents. The article goes on to states, Other

Preventing Hispanic Teenage Mothers From Being Able For...
There are many barriers which prevent Hispanic teenage mothers from being able to graduate high
school. However, there are many ways they can overcome those obstacles, such as receiving their
education and having educational, family, health, and economical support.
School/Education
Staying in school and receiving their education is important so teenage mothers can remain resilient
and graduate high school. In a study conducted, 69.7% of adolescents in the study were either
enrolled, or graduated from high school. 78.7% of those adolescents received passing grades, and
76.7% of them saw finishing high school as essential (SIaDAPA). Most of the adolescents in this
study saw the importance of staying in school and education, and they graduated. They know that
eventually their hard work will pay off. This shows that graduating high school is related to the
students value of how important high school is (SIaDAPA). Along with their cultural and social
norms, a teen s personal values may be reflected by their educational decisions in life (School
Importance and Dropout Among Pregnant Adolescents). If they desire positive educational desires,
they ll have positive personal values such as being courageous, staying motivated, and being
committed. If teenage mothers do not have high expectations for themselves academically, we can
assume that they may not have positive personal values in order to persevere and graduate high
school. Therefore, they are less likely to graduate high

The methodology is actually defines the workflows, processes and responsibilities which are
necessary for project s aims and goals. So, we can say that software development methodology is a set
of best practice to control the complete software development process. The development process of
any project has specific phases which are known as project life cycle. Usually each project has five
phases which are named as: 1 Analysis 2 Coding or Development 3 Testing or Validation 4

flexible. Disadvantages Only high skilled and expert programmers are required for this model. In this
model, there is lack of emphasis on all essential documentation and designing. This model is also not
suitable to handle complex projects. 6 Spiral Model The spiral model is somewhat similar to the
incremental model. This model requires four phases which are: Planning, Risk Analysis, Engineering
and Evaluation. The spiral model focuses on early identification and reduction of project risks as well.
It is mostly used for large projects. Also used when cost and risk evaluation is so important.
Advantages One great advantage of this model is there is high amount of risk analysis required so the
avoidance of risk is enhanced. This model is flexible as it allows any changes to be implemented at

Human Race And Human Population
The world is home to millions of species both large and small that are able to thrive perfectly in their
environments. All living creatures on this earth contribute in some way to the ecosystem that we all
are a part of. Unfortunately, the one species that has the greatest control of the earth is us, the
homosapiens. Modern humans began to develop nearly 200 000 years ago and ever since then
populations of homosapiens have spread across the entire world. Almost every environment we as
humans have come across has in time had to change to try and meet the needs of all the species that
populate the earth together with the enormously increased human population. Sadly the human
population covers over 80% of the earth s surface with various ... Show more content on

However on a human dominated planet, the distribution and populations of large mammals has slowly
been declining around the world. Due to this researchers have come to the conclusion sub Saharan
Africa is more or less the only place left on earth where there is still a relatively high diversity and
population of large mammals. This is not because the continent is naturally rich in large species, but
because it is one of the only places on earth where human activities have not yet wiped out these
incredible mammals. Sadly the influence of the East namely Korea and China and the United States is
decimating elephant, rhino, lion and giraffe. Unfortunately even now, even in our so called technically
advanced world there are hundreds of species that are still at threat of extinction because of humans.
Animals like the black rhino or the Sumatran tiger plus many more have the status of critically
endangered. But it is not all doom and gloom as many organizations like WWF have been working
diligently to protect the endangered creatures of the world. For example, the mountain gorillas of
Congo Basin have had a population increase of over 700 gorillas since 1989 because of their hard
work. So if Homosapiens never existed then the world would be most probably be a very different
place and many extinct animals might still be roaming the lands. Sadly our destructive

Advantages And Cons Of Family Business
They re Global Family business is not an Asian phenomenon. Hidden behind our country s almost a
million micro, small and medium enterprises (or MSMEs) are hundreds of thousands of family owned,
managed or controlled businesses. They are generally easy to spot than to define. Do Size Matter?
Family business in the Philippines is hard to define. Simply, it could be an organization where
decision making runs in the family weaved either by blood or marriage. This can exclude the owner
managed firms that may not have the multi generational aspects of the business. For the corporates,
they are organizations with a family owning (or controlling) at least 51% of the shareholdings. Behind

They may also be managed by non family individuals. The management team can have two or more
family members. However, family members are often involved in operations in various capacity.
Particularly for smaller businesses, one or more family members may be senior officers and managers.
This has pros and cons. Family involvement as operating executives can strengthen the business
because of their loyalty, dedication and willingness to sacrifice today for tomorrow s gains. But this
also present unique problems. Frequently, there are imbalances and mis alignments between the family
and the business interests a definitive source of tension and conflicts. Some Statistics In a micro
survey, Sherryl Uy claimed that 31% family businesses are in retailing. This is unexpected because
many thought that most MSMEs are in manufacturing related activities. In fact in the overall sample,
only 29% were engaged in manufacturing. Both medium (38%) and large (60%) family businesses are
in wholesale trading. Attrition rate is high. In the absence of formal research figures, Galura and
Mercad postulated that Filipino family businesses survival rates should be close to the statistics cited
by scholars in other countries, e.g., 30 to 50% make it to the second generation, 10 20% to the third
and only 3 5% to the

How Did The Atomic Bomb Affect Society
On the 6th August 1945 the Enola Gay, a USA warplane, dropped an atomic bomb (called the Little
Boy ) on a Japanese city called Hiroshima. This was the first time the atomic bomb was used in war.
The bomb exploded at around 580 m above the ground with the equivalent power of 15 kilotons of
TNT. Sixty six thousand people died instantly from the heat and impact of the bomb. Three days later,
on the 9th August, the US decided to drop a second and bigger atomic bomb (called the Fat Man ), on
the Japanese city of Nagasaki. The Fat Man had an equivalent power of 20 kilotons of TNT, causing
more than fourthly thousand deaths. The dropping of the bombs, which was on the order of the US

Japan surrendered 5 days later signaling the end of the war. It also changed how the military operated,

The dropping of the atomic bombs changed warfare forever. Initially during the Manhattan Project,
which was the codename for the American project to develop of nuclear weapons, and the testing of
the bomb in New Mexico, the Americans not realise the impact it would have on the world. They
knew the bomb would end the war, but the priority was to be the first to develop this powerful
weapon; before the Germans or Japanese. The use of the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki resulted
in a much bigger impact than expected. Apart from the surrender of the Japanese, deaths and
devastation, these events caused fear in other countries. Suddenly the USA had a weapon that could
destroy the world over and over again. Other countries joined in the race to also own their own atomic

which was made by the soviets. The bombs caused not only counties to fear them but also the solders

Comparing Plato s The Symposium
In one of his most accomplished works, Plato brings to light the topic of alcohol and the significance
of drinking in The Symposium. Through this text, Plato is writing about philosophy is the setting of a
narrative in order to reinforce the context of the story. Plato was a metaphilosophist that supported the
theory of forms. He believed that understanding pure form, achieving true wisdom, is something that
cannot be defined or reduced to words, and all people should strive to understand pure form. The main
symbol in The Symposium, is wine, a representation of wisdom. Throughout the narrative, the
characters drink at a constant place. Having the wine allows for the men to open up and share their
ideas on love, as the characters try and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a symposium, the symposiarch, the leader of the symposium, decides what is going to be talked
about, and each person at the symposium delivers a speech on that topic. As this is going on, the
people at the symposium pass around watered down wine and drink in rounds all at the same pace.
This drinking ritual is an example of sophrosunē, an Ancient Greek value that emphasized self
restraint and conforming to societal expectations.
The main concept that Plato bases his argument on is the theory of forms. According to the theory of
forms, the physical world is created by the abstract ideas and concepts known as the metaphysical
world. Plato believed that the physical world was not real and was simply an illusion for the
metaphysical world. in The Symposium, there are six different levels to the theory of forms as defined
by Diotima. Diotima defines the levels using the example of love, the topic of discussion at the
symposium. The first two levels fall into the physical world and are the love of one body and the love
of all bodies. The third, fourth, and fifth levels fall under the realm of the metaphysical world and are
the love of minds, the love of customs and traditions, and love of forms of knowledge respectively.
The highest level in the theory of forms is pure form which extends beyond the metaphysical world
and cannot be defined. Only beings that have achieved wisdom, beings that reside in the realm of pure
form, can understand this idea. Plato

The Depression Of Manic Depression
For my research paper, I decided to look into Manic Depression. I have chosen to write about this
topic because I have been personally dealing with this disorder since about eight years old. Manic
Depression is usually referred to as Bipolar Disorder, but when I tell someone that I am Bipolar, they
just think that it means I get angry easily. People seem to take me more seriously when I refer to it as
Manic Depression. I used to have to take a wide variety of medications and go to counseling when I
was younger because I was having struggles with suicidal urges. Recently it has gotten significantly
worse since the death of my father due to a stroke in 2012. This is a very serious topic for me because
it has made and will continue to make my life more difficult than it needs to be. Manic Depression
first started to get looked into in Greece during the 1st century by Aretaeus of Cappadocia. The
research he did was not acknowledged for many centuries after. The terms manic and depressive come
from the ancient Greek terms mania and melancholia. The ancient Greeks and Romans learned that
lithium could be used to treat the manically depressed people by bathing with lithium salt. In this era,
it was very common for the deeply religious dogma of the time to execute people that suffered from
bipolar disorder or any other mental disorders. During the 17th century, a book named The Anatomy
of Melancholy was written by Robert Burton. The book covered different forms of treatment for

The single most important aphorism Morrie says is, The truth is, Mitch, he said, once you learn how to

limited, the life that has been lived already seems to have been for nothing. Learning how to life
comes with the consequence of accepting the future fate of death and beginning to live in the moment,

The Importance Of Racial Inequality
Social inequality is a recurring problem throughout, not only the country, but the world. There are all
kinds of inequalities throughout the world, and without any person or thing creating awarenesses this
will induce more pandemonium. With that being said, in order to terminate racial inequality, people
that are capable of bringing awareness to it need to start producing familiarity locally because it will
suddenly erupt onto a more global impact. When analyzing how starting to bring awareness to social
inequities and raise awareness at a local level can turn global and change the world, one who explores
the specifics of racial discrimination can aware others about the dangers and results of this certain
inequality. Politics, professional athletes protesting, and media discrimination are ways people have
been making local awareness a global reality. In the end, with more and more awareness, more and
more people will help end inequalities throughout the world. To begin, awareness of global issues
within politics happen all of the time; therefore, bringing awareness to racial inequality within politics
will spread globally and change the world. Racial discrimination occurring inside of the American
government is between Donald Trump and the Mexican culture. The most emphasized facts Trump
stated throughout his campaign and carried through his presidency is to build a wall on the border of
the United States and Mexico, keeping all illegal immigrants out of the country.

Business Strategy Of Nandos
Section 1: Strategy and Sustainability: The Expression of Organizational Values and Vision
Introduction For this Business Strategy Report, I have selected a restaurant chain named Nando s. It
was established in 1987 by two friends, Fernando Duarte and Robert Brozin (Nando s.com, 2017).
Although being a South African brand it has Portuguese influence and the restaurant chain depicts
these designs. Nando s specialty is flame grilled chicken spiced with their unique selection of
marinade sauces and spices ranging from mild to extra hot and for those individuals not into the hot
stuff, there s a lemon and herb option. It also has other selected food options to choose from in their
attractive menu. Its niche market is working middle class male and female customers who enjoy spicy
food and casual dining. It also caters for kids and families. Analysis of Nando s For a business to be
successful and have a competitive advantage, it is important to evaluate the company s resources and
capabilities (Pitt Koufopoulos, 2012). Resources in a company are the productive assets owned

Argumentative Essay About Car Movies

Driving by dealerships on the way to work every morning I see people with hands on the back of their
heads standing in those car lots looking. They go from car to car, pointing and shrugging. I recently
found myself in the same position this week. The search I need a new car, but I m not a car guy. I don t
have a classic 1968 Ford Mustang, nor can I afford a brand new Benz or Lexus. Honestly, to me a car
is a means. I need to get places, there s no subway where I live and buses just don t cut it. As much as
I hate it, I need a car and the one I am driving now is ready to die. I didn t always feel that way.
Starting my search I asked Google what he thought. In return, I had lists of this past years top cars in
order of safety, gas mileage, price. It was like looking at toy cars on the shelf of a store. I didn t see
any difference between them and had no better idea of what I wanted. Asking coworkers, they could
only tell me what they disliked, saying, Don t get a Ford, unless you want to fix or repair it daily, or
Don t get a Chevy, it s not worth it. Well, then what do I get? Like those people I see on my way into
the rote, I started making my rounds at the dealerships: Ford, Chevy, Acura, Toyota. I spoke to
salesmen and they worked hard to convince me I needed which ever car we looked at. Last weekend, I
weighed the prices, the mileage, and the possibility beside colors and payments and features. I came
out with nothing and felt like I was less sure. I eyed an economic hybrid, thinking maybe I could buy a
nice green Prius; or go for a retro look and get a Dodge Charger, so I could rev with a little power.
This and that: apples, oranges, it was all the same to me. I broke down and asked my wife, What
should I get? All she could say was, You are you going to disagree with whatever I suggest. When she
showed me the link to a Chrysler Minivan, I had to admit she was right. The Memory When I was

Battle Of Horseshoe Bend Strengths And Weaknesses
The Battle of Horseshoe Bend illustrated some important lessons that are as applicable to today s
military operational environments as they were back then These lessons are timeless. Studying this
battle can help leaders and Commanders identify strengths and weakness that lead to mission success
and enemy defeat. General Andrew Jackson had engaged the enemy Creek Indians in previous battles.
He was able to learn valuable lessons and make adjustments to ensure that the Battle of Horseshoe
Bend achieved his operational objectives and had the desired end state for mission success.
Armies cannot sustain or conduct combat operations without effective logistical supply lines. Lack of
supplies lead to poor morale and capitulation of forces. Jackson led several campaigns against the
Creek Indians prior to the Battle of Horseshoe Bend but could not accomplish his operational
objectives due to a lack of supplies and long supply lines. In the winter of 1814, Jackson suffered
great losses when he led an Army of inexperienced, undisciplined and under supplied forces to fight
the Red Sticks at Emuckfau and Enotochopco. He barely escaped with his life and was forced to
retreat to Fort Strother.
After winter, in March of 1814, Jackson left Fort Strother with the intent to extend supply lines by
building a new fort which came to be known as Fort Williams. This fort was closer to Horseshoe bend
and General Jackson was determined to achieve victory and defeat the Red Sticks at the

The Sculpture Of The Etruscan- Roman Tradition
In the early official and private portrait of the Etruscan Roman tradition, the achievement of sculpture
from the identity of the ideal Republican demonstrated motivation behind the virtus, veristic, and
gravitas qualities. The Etruscan Roman portrait sculpture of the Patrician Carrying Portrait Busts of
Two Ancestors is a life size marble statue that was dated to the period of the Emperor Augustus
somewhere at the end of the 1st century BCE or the beginning of the 1st century CE, reflecting the
practices that have originated from the past by Polybius.
This Etruscan Roman piece of art is detailed all around, but also ideal as depictions look influential
throughout the generations from the living patrician man holding the lifeless portrait busts of the two
very distinct ancestors. The surface of the marble used to carve the male figure, and the portrait heads
is very smooth and pale in colour, as the natural agent simulates realistic complexion through the
veins present within the marble creating a three dimensional illusion of meticulous naturalistic
rendition of the human anatomy engraved with relief detail all around. The function of the portrait
sculpture was to have a permanent documentation motivated by the realistic commemoration of one s
ancestors in a religious and ritualistic funeral use of death masks, that would have been cast from the
face of the deceased. This became an obvious style of presenting recognizable prestige that conveyed
the significance of

How Interests And Interactions Shape Science And Technology
HOW INTERESTS AND INTERACTIONS SHAPE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Ian Hacking
uses the example of dolomite in order to show that human interests do not play a role in science. His
belief is that there is nothing less socially constructed than a rock, but this statement does not
accurately portray the facts. Dolomite has a long history that involves a number of people and social
interests. Each person contributed to the discovery and identification of dolomite and social factors
were at play during the scientific process. Hackling starts with the history of dolomite. In 1791, a
French geologist, Deodat de Dolomieu, came across a type of limestone in the Tyrolean Alps. Then in
1792, Nicolas Theodor von Saussure named the region and the layer of sedimentary rock after
Dolomieu. Saussure then analyzed dolomite; he claimed that it was high in aluminum and held no
magnesium. However, this analysis was incorrect and it would take a decade to get the correct
analysis. Dolomite is an interesting example because it shows that scientific facts have a social factor
that is often ignored. Geologists stuck with Saussure s analysis even though twelve years earlier a
scientist by the name of Giovanni Arduino identified dolomite as magnesia limestone (Hacking, 187).
Arduino correctly identified dolomite s composition but very few people paid attention to his analysis.
Dolomite was named after Dolomieu because he had come across dolomite. The compound was not
named after Arduino nor was his

The Story Of Miss And Me Essay
As the world turns, people come and go. Beginning life as a small child and eventually adopting the
ways of the older people around us and thus complete the cycle of life. In the story of Miss and Me
Mandible Bartholomew merges the mind of an adult with the body of a child who takes on a
controversial role. While the child possessed the knowledge and the sense of a full grown man he was
looked upon as a mere child who could not make wholesome decisions. This unique opportunity to
delve into what it means to be an adult and child is the crucial question being asked. Would people
rather be naïve children with no responsibilities or knowledgeable adults with worldly burdens? Being
a kid is a wonderfully blissful life, depending on the childhood you received. They are less taxing than
adult life despite most situations, and this is a big plus. Playing, eating, being sure to clean up before
meals, and fighting the authority figures that demand a curfew hour are a few concerns of a child s
role. An uncomplicated way of life that many enjoy and there are people around you to take care of
your needs. No bills, no deadlines, no major responsibilities, but no identity. Children barely have a
self concept of who they as they are generally attached to their parents for the better part of seventeen
years. Without fully understanding who they are, children cannot be a wholesome individual but
merely an extension of their parent s family. There is a huge lack of independence in

Examples Of Byronic Hero In Jane Eyre
Byronic Heros were first introduced in Lord Byron s writing and have since then been utilized in
many different writings. In the novel Jane Eyre (1847), Charlotte Bronte creates a character that
symbolizes a Byronic Hero. Nevertheless, Mr. Rochester is considered a Byronic Hero due to certain
characteristics he has, however, this is only to an extent, as he lacks some qualities of a Byronic Hero.
He is central to the theme of Jane Eyre because he, like many others in in the novel, are searching for
a place to belong and find self identity.
Throughout the novel, it is asserted that Mr. Rochester owns the characteristics of Isolation/Wander
and Rejects Social Norms that a Byronic Hero holds. Mr. Rochester is isolated from society and exiled
by the upper class but only partially, due to his large sum of wealth. Although Rochester did not exile
himself by choice, he is considered peculiar by the other prosperous townsfolk for rejecting social
norms which causes him to be isolated. Bronte states this cause and effect chain through one of her
quotes in the novel, Come Jane come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rochester is an important character because he is lost and can not find himself or his place in the
world. He is portrayed as a Byronic Hero with his character qualities even with the lack of a few. He is
considered a Byronic Hero for his unconventional way of living that rejects social norms and causes
everyone to isolate him and cause him to wander, leaving him moody and temperamental which also
causes him to be rebellious and commit unnamed sexual crimes throughout the novel. Although
Rochester does lack the quality of superior intellect, the abundance of the other qualities make it so
that he is indeed considered a Byronic Hero. All these qualities of a Byronic Hero are somehow
connected and Charlotte Bronte does an incredible job with the cause and effect as well as a normal
cycle of the different behaviors to make Rochester a Byronic

How Seamus Heaney s Childhood Affected His Poetry Essay
How Seamus Heaney s Childhood Affected His Poetry
Seamus Heaney was born in the North of Ireland in 1939 on a farm with his mother and father and
nine other siblings. Generally Heaney s poems are influenced by animals through his childhood
experience, specifically within The Early Purges and An Advancement of
Learning . Heaney grew up near Belfast, during the time of The
Troubles , the Irish civil war. Although Heaney left at the height of the war, it is obvious his work
reflects his experiences of that time.
For an example The Early Purges illustrates this. Where they consider death unnatural . Growing into

They seem weak and terrified.
Heaney uses words such as, purges , the water pumped in , scraggy wee shits , dunghill and dung to
suggest that the kittens seem like waste. The title reflects the idea of waste, as the word purges means
getting rid of undesirables. The water pumped in, indicates what happens when flushing a toilet,
therefore getting rid of waste.
Dan Taggart calls the kittens, scraggy wee shits which shows that he doesn t care about the killing of
the kittens and treats them as waste to be got rid of. He justifies his actions by suggesting the kittens
have no value. A dunghill can be used for getting rid of dung and the kittens are sluiced on the
dunghill. The word sluiced means
flushed indicating a toilet, so the kittens are therefore treated as waste. Throughout the poem we are
viewing the killing through Heaney s eyes and it is evident that he does not like the killing as he uses
words such as soft , tiny and frail to suggest the kittens are innocent and harmless. The words, For
days I sadly hung round the yard, watching the three sogged remains and the fear came back suggest
he was affected by the carnage and murder he witnessed. However, toward the end of the poem he is
forced to accept the killing and torture.
Heaney became numb, unfeeling and almost deadened. This is shown in the words, I just shrug,
Bloody pups . It makes sense . He is almost imitating Dan Taggart at this point to justify

The cost of setting up such farms by the hotel would be high and the hotel would be resistant to

Certainty Of Rene Descartes
Rene Descartes Rene Descartes was a philosopher of the 17th century. He had this keen interest in the
search for certainty. For he was unimpressed with the way philosophy is during their time. He mused
that nothing certain was coming forth from all the philosophical ideologies. He had considered that the
case which philosophy was in was due to the fact that it was not grounded to something certain. He
was primarily concerned with intellectual certainty, meaning that something that is certain through the
intellect. Thus he was named a rationalist due to this the line of thought that he pursued. But in his
work in the meditation, his method of finding this certainty was skeptical in nature; this is the
methodic doubt . Rene Descartes had attempted to find that something which is certain to. Only to find
that our senses are unreliable and our senses can be deceived. He did find that something from which
he is fairly certain about, which is the Cogito . Cogito ergo sum which is often translated as, I think,

also provide assistance to other veterinarians when help is needed ( veterinary technicians ).
Veterinarians usually work in private clinics, laboratories, animal shelters, and animal hospitals. They
also may work in boarding kennels, rescue leagues, and zoos. Often times their jobs can be physically

Angry Black Woman Stereotype Analysis
The primary issue of this article lies in the perpetuation of the angry black woman stereotype. The
angry black woman stereotype can be seen as an extension of the matriarch and sapphire stereotypes,
both derivative of the dominant ideology of the slave era that was created to maintain black women s
subordination. The matriarch stereotype is presented as a domineering, aggressive, masculine, and
fiercely independent black woman whose forceful nature emasculates and demoralizes black men to
the point that they abandon their families (Newsome, 37). This image functions to devalue, exploit,
and subjugate African American women through an idealized wielding of power that is in no way
supported by the actual power structures of America (Newsome, ... Show more content on

This is problematic because often, black women feel inclined to either live up to the stereotype at the
risk of disguising any appearance of vulnerability, or they may modify their behavior in an attempt to
appear nonthreatening or stereotypical (Walley Jean 73). Even though there is little empirical research
that has specifically investigated black women s actual experiences with expression of anger, the
assumptions that it is a defining characteristic is pervasive. This stereotype has permeated American
society for decades and continues to influence the world s view of black women through television,
cinema, and virtually every other form of media. Anger is a universal emotion that is experienced
throughout the lifespan of every person, yet it is often seen as a definitive aspect of black women s
personalities and identities as human beings. Behaving in an assertive and outspoken manner would
usually be seen as a reflection of strength and intelligence, but for black women, it is viewed as
trenchant and domineering (Walley Jean, 69). This controlling image ensures black women are void of
anger privilege (social and structural freedom to openly express anger) that more powerful and higher
status individuals (whites) enjoy. (Walley Jean,

Most Of Society Views Food In A Singular Manner, That Is,
Most of society views food in a singular manner, that is, they see food and they think of it as no more
than just something to shove in their mouths. However, food has been around forever, and certainly,
something that is a necessary part of everyday life must play a part in our personal identities and how
we view others around the world. When I first read the prompt for this paper, I admit I had to look up
the meaning of gastronomy, so this acquainted me with the idea that food can be much more than what
it seems to be. Three texts that we have studied this semester that have gastronomy as a major theme
include Khushwant Singh s The Wog , Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart, and Ngitji s The Possum

This means that the way we understand and we relate to food, food practices, is always related to our
identity, in the deepest manner (1). The contrasting food preferences between the two continue, and
this leads to a heightened sense that the relationship is in trouble. After the couple finishes two very
different dinners, Singh states, They sat in silence facing each other across the table; she chewing her
leaf almost like a cow chewing cud, thought Sen. He, lost in the smoke of his long Cuban cigar. It was
oppressive and the barrier between them, impassable (302). Singh s use of the smoke here acts as
metaphor for the cultural barrier between the Sens. Food plays a role in our identities, and Mr. and
Mrs. Sen could not identify with one another. This phenomenon is certainly not restricted to Mr. and
Mrs. Sen, and The Wog does a great job at displaying the fact that food and drink can have a
tremendous impact on relations between cultures around the world. Food and drink not only have an
impact across cultures but also have an impact on areas such as religion and gender roles within
cultures around the world. Achebe s Things Fall Apart is set in a society that is dominated by food,
and this agricultural focus demonstrates the large effect that food has on the areas of gender roles and
religion. The tribe of Umuofia relies entirely on harvesting crops for sustainability. All the major farm

Addiction Problems And The Field Of Addiction Treatment Essay
understand their clients with addiction problems and motivate them to change. This model is one of
the most widely used models within the field of addiction treatment initially developed to describe the
process of adopting any healthy behavior. Motivational interviewing shares much in common with the
trans theoretical or Stages of Change Model of behavior change. Although not universally endorsed,
the trans theoretical model holds that at any given time, a person is at a particular stage in relation to
behavior change (Harvard Mental Health Letter, July 2008). The five Stages of Change are identified
as: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. A client in the
precontemplation stage doesn t believe that her or his current behavior is a significant problem and
doesn t intend to change the behavior anytime in the near future. In the contemplation stage, a client
begins to see that the behavior is a problem and considers making a change but is ambivalent about
doing so because she or he also sees reason to keep things as they are. A client in the preparation stage
has decided to make a behavioral change and has a specific plan for doing so in the near future. In the
action stage, a client carries out a behavioral change plan and begins making the desired change.
Finally, in the maintenance stage, a client has made the behavioral change and works to avoid
relapsing into the original behavior. Throughout all stages, motivational

Meaning Of Happiness
There s no question that everyone wants to be happy within their lives. The only source of
disagreement lies within how one achieves happiness and what happiness really means. The authors
within the book Pursuing Happiness have their own meanings of happiness and what it takes to
achieve happiness. Topics such as: what happiness is, what brings happiness, what role does money
play in happiness, etc. In this first discussion, we see what the some of the authors have to say about
the meaning of happiness. Someone such as his Holiness the Dalai Lama would argue that happiness
is having peace and satisfaction within one s mind. As a tibetan monk, he believe that happiness
occurs within the self (Dalai Lama and Cutler 23). In contrast, Thomas Jefferson would explain that
happiness is actually the opportunity to freely choose one s path within life. Freedom, in eyes, would
be the embodiment of freedom (Declaration of Independence). In would also argue that happiness
stems from the feeling of self worth, that you have a place within this world. As we see here, the true
meaning of happiness all depends on the person. There is no right or wrong answer because we each
perceive happiness in a different manner. This is important because it also means that there are
different opinions in which someone can achieve happiness. When it comes to achieving happiness,
there are two things to consider; physical and spiritual. Some people believe that happiness can come

battle is being fought for survival and complete victory. Late in the day on June the 4th, United States
Navy helldivers scream down from the heavens to rain hell upon the Japanese fleet carriers below.
Within minutes, three of the Imperial Navy s great carriers are sent to the bottom of the Pacific in
great fireballs. The massive destruction was wrought by the well known Douglas SBD Dauntless dive

newer Curtiss SB2C Helldiver. Despite the United States Navy replacing the old Dauntless with the
Helldiver in 1943, the Dauntless continued to serve proudly with the United States Marine Corps for
the rest of the war. The Curtiss SB2C Helldiver was first introduced into combat with the Unites

the obsolete SB2U Vindicator and the old but reliable SBD Dauntless dive bomber. When the first
prototype models came off the production lines, there were several major problems with the design,
which delayed its entry into official service with the United States Navy. The Curtiss Helldiver design
was a modest step up from the older SBD Dauntless. The basic principle of the dive bomber did not
change with the introduction of the Helldiver. The SB2C was equipped with dive flaps, but on the first
models the flaps were solid and caused buffeting when going into the high g dives. This was later
changed to perforated dive brakes that improved the diving performance of the aircraft. Just like the

their community. In contrast, their king and commander, Odysseus, successfully displays how to avoid
this lack of self control by possessing tremendous amounts of self discipline and prudence. After
attacking the Cicones, Odysseus men ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Odysseus seems to be the only one not participating in the celebration and avoids the expectation or
temptation to join in. As his men got drunk, Odysseus kept a clear mind, thinking ahead to what will
most likely happen. His men lack this foresight and become shortsighted, trading their long term
security for some short term fun. Odysseus differs from his men in his ability to look ahead to the
possible outcome and consequences of certain actions. The death of their comrades could have easily
been avoided if they had packed up and left before the rest of the Cicones could take their revenge or
at least not been drunk as they fought off the army. Shortly after escaping the Cicones, the men are
presented with another temptation, but their folly blinds them to the consequences of trying to escape
from their present worries. Odysseus shipmates, unable to resist the temptation, ate the lotus and as a
result forget about their journey home where their loved ones and community are waiting for them.
They are tempted by the idea that they could stay there forever and never return home. Much like drug
users, the Lotus eaters and anyone who shared in their activity forgot their troubles and earthly
concerns for the time being. As the men grazed on lotus their memory of the journey home dissolved
forever (Od.9.109 10). The real temptation was the ability to detach from the world and forget their
worries. Ultimately, if they had stayed, not only would life become a

Essay about Stephen Crane and The Civil War
Stephen Crane and The Civil War
One year after the publication of The Red Badge of Courage Crane released a continuation to the
narrative in the form of a short story. The Veteran characterizes an elderly Henry Fleming who recalls
his first exposure to the experience of war. Of the battle he remembers, That was at Chancellorsville
(Crane 529 531). While Crane never explicitly states the name of the battle in The Red Badge, the
incidents mentioned in The Veteran indicate that the protagonist of each is one in the same (website).
Memories of his reasons for flight and sad recollections of the memory of Jim Conklin, the tall soldier,
mirror the episodes mentioned in Crane s second novel. Studies have shown that the source ... Show

Many of the men who witnessed the events that occurred on this battlefield came from this town and
served as sources of inspiration for Crane s final draft (website). Despite his evident utilization of
these sources, Crane purposefully failed to mention the actual battle in his publication of The Red
Badge of Courage. As a novel that aspired to be a psychological portrayal of fear, neglecting the
historical framework became an intentional stylistic technique without which the underlined theme
would inherently have been lost. Had Crane concretized Henry s experience with a named battle, the
reactions to the novel would have altered considerably. Inevitably people would associate imagery
from the actual battle with The Red Badge of Courage, a process that would ultimately shift the
perspective from Henry s experience to the war itself. Crane avoided these types of reactions by
allowing the battle to remain nameless in the narrative. The website quotes a more practical reason
stating, none of the characters in the novel certainly not lowly privates like Henry Fleming would have
known that the battle they were fighting in was to be called Chancellorsville. Civil War reports and
memoirs reveal that the men fighting the war very seldom knew where they were, as they often fought
on unfamiliar territory and had infrequent communication with field commanders. (As in Red Badge,
the regiments often knew only rumors.)
By keeping the battle anonymous

Case Study Honesty Testing At The Carter Cleaning Company
Introduction Career planning is the process in which somebody becomes conscious of their skills
(knowledge, motivations, and interests) or other characteristics to achieve a definite goal. In this
particularly case study Honesty Testing at the Carter Cleaning Company, the main concern is stealing.
When it comes to HRM or Human Resource Management, small business usually take the full force of
the problem. Usually, the manager or director has no Human Resource employees that he/she can trust
or rely on. The screening process that the company uses is been causing problems, and find
themselves with issues with honest and reliable personnel. The proprietors of the establishment,
Jennifer and her father are trying to figure it out a way to diminish the turnover. For example,
according to the Department of Labor, Job openings, hires, and separations all increased in 2013...

In my opinion, that is the main purpose of dishonesty tests. Every single manager wants an employee
that they feel they can trust. However, a disadvantage is that some of these tests are expensive and
since Jennifer has a small business than these tests are a bit out of her league. Once in a while she can
use those tests, but is not something that can be done every time she wants to hire somebody.
Backgrounds checks are the most effective ways to separate theft prone people from the ones that are
not. With these types of tests Jennifer can differentiate which individuals are trustworthy. When an
employee is caught stealing or in the process of stealing products, merchandise and/or cash that
individual should be fire immediately. Jennifer would have to make an immediate decision as to call
the police or handle the matter

Gone Baby Gone Analysis
The following analysis is done on the 2007 film Gone Baby Gone , directed by Ben Affleck and
adapted from the novel by Dennis Lehane. The movie is based in Dorchester, Massachusetts where
two Boston private investigators Patrick Kenzie and his partner and girlfriend Angie Gennaro are
hired to find the child of Helene McCready, Amanda, who was abducted from her home one night
while her mother was off using drugs with her boyfriend. After a two month investigation it is
discovered by investigator Kenzie that the police captain Jack Doyle had abducted the child with the
aid of Amanda s uncle Lionel McCready and police detective Remy Bressant to protect and remove
Amanda from the drug addicted mothers care. Captain Doyle s own daughter was killed years prior to
the incident which likely contributed to the decision to abduct the child. For the purposes of this paper,
we will not be investigating Captain Doyle s presenting problems and rather focusing on the issues of
the child s abduction and the ramifications on her developmental processes as well as briefly reflecting
upon the moral dilemma Patrick Kenzie faces at the climax of the story. The psychological
perspectives studied throughout this coursework have examined mental health presenting from a
social environment and not simply from the biological and individual systems in which the individual
is concerned. Lateral movement from negative and unhealthy environments to those of more stable
and predictable environments do not

Animal Testing Is Unethical And Unnecessary
Animal testing is a secret most companies don t like to share. It is a global problem that needs to be
put to an end. The use of animal testing is used in medicine, cosmetics and for educational purposes
and it is immoral and unnecessary when we have advanced technologies that can replace these
harmful methods.
PETA. Using Animals for Medical Testing Is Unethical and Unnecessary. Ed. Tamara Thompson. The
Ethics of Medical Testing. Detroit MI: Greenhaven/Gale, Cengage Learning, 2011. 76 82. Print.
This scholarly article s main focus is proving that the use of animals in medical testing is both
unethical and unnecessary by providing evidence and multiple statistics. Its main points are that the
results using of animal testing is very unreliable, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have been able to find many helpful sources that have given me a substantial amount of information
related and in connection with my topic. Scholarly sources were harder to come by, but I was able to
find an abundance of non scholarly sources. I think this is due to the fact that this is a current issue and
although finding scholarly data is possible, non scholarly data presents more in depth and current
results that have either not yet been written about or that governmental associations try to hide from
the public. As I further my research, I hope to find more scholarly sources. I would like to broaden my
search terms and maybe try searching for sources in other databases using the keywords cruelty free as
well as further my search in discovering the full process of animal testing within medical science,
cosmetics and in educational facilities and what laws are in place for animal rights and laws pertaining
to experimenting with animals in different regions. I d also like to find a source that goes in more
detail about the alternatives to animal testing as well. This is something that I really need because it is
an important part of my thesis and paper. I was surprised by the massive numbers of animals that are
manipulated, abused and murdered per year. It was also surprising to me that animals used for testing
and experimentation are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act. I feel as if I m just scratching the
surface

  • 2. Allegory Of The Cave Vs Plato s Cave By writing The Allegory of the Cave or Plato s Cave, Plato tries to convey to people that they must escape the world of illusions and shadows and look at it with other eyes because that is the only way that they can find the true view of the world. In other words what I mean by other eyes is that people should see not only what is presented to them but see what is the real message hidden behind the illusion. People should think outside the box in order to break away from the delusions and discover the reality. Plato s allegory tells us about people s way of thinking about the world. In the essay I will explain why not everyone wants to open his or her eyes, how people are misguided by illusions, and why sometimes it is hard it is to see the reality. To begin with, we as a people have the ability to see but not everyone actually sees things, and often we believe in what is presented to us blindly. In the The Allegory of the Cave or Plato s Cave is written that the power to learn is presented in everyone s soul and that the instrument with which each learns is like eye that cannot be turned around from darkness to light without turning the whole body. By that he means that everybody has the ability to learn things but not everybody wants to see learn them. In other words, the power to learn is ability that everybody has but not everyone uses it properly. Plato s allegory reveals that education is the craft concerned with doing this very thing, this turning around, and which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Copyright Law Limitations Since the U.S. Copyright Act became law in 1790, the copyright term has been increasing. Copyright is an intangible property right granted by federal statue to the author or originator of certain literacy or outside productions. The first major change was the Copyright Act of 1976, it gave American authors the right to print, re print, or publish their work for 14 years and then to renew for another 14. In 1998, Congress passed the Sonny Bono Copyright Act also known as the Mickey Mouse Copyright Act, which extended protection from life of the author plus 70 years as well as taking away the need for a copyright notice and registration. The result was that many whom did not have copyright protection due to lack of copyright notice and registration were now protected. Following the Mickey Mouse Copyright Act, they passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act which intended to create a new updated version of copyright laws to deal with the challenges of regulating digital material. It aimed to protect the rights of both copyright owners and consumers, and without it copyright owners would have a difficult time obtaining legal action against those who copy copyrighted material. Copyright act laws should be extended for various reasons, one is that, it gives the creator more time to profit from it and if the creator dies early on it will be passed on to their family. Knowing that work will be copyrighted for a longer time gives them a chance to encourage their creativity and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some believe global warming is not an issue seeing as there have been trends in the past that indicate that the world changes constantly and that it will once again come to its natural order. Like geologist Charles Lyell once stated with his idea of uniformitarianism, that the Earth is shaped by the same processes still in operation today. Due to this researchers have come to the conclusion sub Saharan Africa is more or less the only place left on earth where there is still a relatively high diversity and population of large mammals. This is not because the continent is naturally rich in large species, but because it is one of the only places on earth where human activities have not yet wiped out these incredible mammals. Honestly, to me a car is a means. I need to get places, there s no subway where I live and buses just don t cut it. As much as I hate it, I need a car and the one I am driving now is ready to die. I didn t always feel that way. Starting my search I asked Google what he thought. In return, I had lists of this past years top cars in order of safety, gas mileage, price. It was like looking at toy cars on the shelf of a store. I didn t see any difference between them and had no better idea of what I wanted. Asking coworkers, they could only tell me what they disliked, saying, Don t get a Ford, unless you want to fix or repair it daily, or Don t get a Chevy, it s not worth it. Well, then what do I get? Like those people I see on my way into the rote, I started making my rounds at the dealerships: Ford, Chevy, Acura, Toyota. I spoke to salesmen and they worked hard to convince me I needed which ever car we looked at. Last weekend, I weighed the prices, the mileage, and the possibility beside colors and payments and features. I came out with nothing and felt like I was less sure. I eyed an economic hybrid, thinking maybe I could buy a nice green Prius; or go for a retro look and get a Dodge Charger, so I could rev with a little power. This and that: apples, oranges, it was all the same to me. I broke down and asked my wife, What should I get? All she could say was, You are you going to disagree with whatever I suggest. Battle Of Horseshoe Bend Strengths And Weaknesses The Battle of Horseshoe Bend illustrated some important lessons that are as applicable to today s military operational environments as they were back then These lessons are timeless. Studying this battle can help leaders and Commanders identify strengths and weakness that lead to mission success and enemy defeat. General Andrew Jackson had engaged the enemy Creek Indians in previous battles. He was able to learn valuable lessons and make adjustments to ensure that the Battle of Horseshoe Bend achieved his operational objectives and had the desired end state for mission success. Armies cannot sustain or conduct combat operations without effective logistical supply lines. Lack of supplies lead to poor morale and capitulation of forces. Jackson led several campaigns against the Creek Indians prior to the Battle of Horseshoe Bend but could not accomplish his operational objectives due to a lack of supplies and long supply lines. In the winter of 1814, Jackson suffered great losses when he led an Army of inexperienced, undisciplined and under supplied forces to fight the Red Sticks at Emuckfau and Enotochopco. He barely escaped with his life and was forced to retreat to Fort Strother. After winter, in March of 1814, Jackson left Fort Strother with the intent to extend supply lines by building a new fort which came to be known as Fort Williams. The Sculpture Of The Etruscan- Roman Tradition In the early official and private portrait of the Etruscan Roman tradition, the achievement of sculpture from the identity of the ideal Republican demonstrated motivation behind the virtus, veristic, and gravitas qualities. The Etruscan Roman portrait sculpture of the Patrician Carrying Portrait Busts of Two Ancestors is a life size marble statue that was dated to the period of the Emperor Augustus somewhere at the end of the 1st century BCE or the beginning of the 1st century CE, reflecting the practices that have originated from the past by Polybius. This Etruscan Roman piece of art is detailed all around, but also ideal as depictions look influential throughout the generations from the living patrician man holding the lifeless portrait busts of the two very distinct ancestors. The surface of the marble used to carve the male figure, and the portrait heads is very smooth and pale in colour, as the natural agent simulates realistic complexion through the veins present within the marble creating a three dimensional illusion of meticulous naturalistic rendition of the human anatomy engraved with relief detail all around. The function of the portrait sculpture was to have a permanent documentation motivated by the realistic commemoration of one s ancestors in a religious and ritualistic funeral use of death masks, that would have been cast from the face of the deceased. This became an obvious style of presenting recognizable prestige that conveyed the significance of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Interests And Interactions Shape Science And Technology HOW INTERESTS AND INTERACTIONS SHAPE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Ian Hacking uses the example of dolomite in order to show that human interests do not play a role in science. His belief is that there is nothing less socially constructed than a rock, but this statement does not accurately portray the facts. Dolomite has a long history that involves a number of people and social interests. Each person contributed to the discovery and identification of dolomite and social factors were at play during the scientific process. Hackling starts with the history of dolomite. In 1791, a French geologist, Deodat de Dolomieu, came across a type of limestone in the Tyrolean Alps. Then in 1792, Nicolas Theodor von Saussure named the region and the layer of sedimentary rock after Dolomieu. Saussure then analyzed dolomite; he claimed that it was high in aluminum and held no magnesium. However, this analysis was incorrect and it would take a decade to get the correct analysis. Dolomite is an interesting example because it shows that scientific facts have a social factor that is often ignored. Geologists stuck with Saussure s analysis even though twelve years earlier a scientist by the name of Giovanni Arduino identified dolomite as magnesia limestone (Hacking, 187). Arduino correctly identified dolomite s composition but very few people paid attention to his analysis. Dolomite was named after Dolomieu because he had come across dolomite. In the novel Jane Eyre (1847), Charlotte Bronte creates a character that symbolizes a Byronic Hero. Nevertheless, Mr. Rochester is considered a Byronic Hero due to certain characteristics he has, however, this is only to an extent, as he lacks some qualities of a Byronic Hero. He is central to the theme of Jane Eyre because he, like many others in in the novel, are searching for a place to belong and find self identity. Throughout the novel, it is asserted that Mr. Rochester owns the characteristics of Isolation/Wander and Rejects Social Norms that a Byronic Hero holds. Mr. Rochester is isolated from society and exiled by the upper class but only partially, due to his large sum of wealth. Although Rochester did not exile himself by choice, he is considered peculiar by the other prosperous townsfolk for rejecting social norms which causes him to be isolated. The title reflects the idea of waste, as the word purges means getting rid of undesirables. The water pumped in, indicates what happens when flushing a toilet, therefore getting rid of waste. Dan Taggart calls the kittens, scraggy wee shits which shows that he doesn t care about the killing of the kittens and treats them as waste to be got rid of. He justifies his actions by suggesting the kittens have no value. A dunghill can be used for getting rid of dung and the kittens are sluiced on the dunghill. The word sluiced means flushed indicating a toilet, so the kittens are therefore treated as waste. Throughout the poem we are viewing the killing through Heaney s eyes and it is evident that he does not like the killing as he uses words such as soft , tiny and frail to suggest the kittens are innocent and harmless. The words, For days I sadly hung round the yard, watching the three sogged remains and the fear came back suggest he was affected by the carnage and murder he witnessed. However, toward the end of the poem he is forced to accept the killing and torture. Heaney became numb, unfeeling and almost deadened. This is shown in the words, I just shrug, Bloody pups . The angry black woman stereotype can be seen as an extension of the matriarch and sapphire stereotypes, both derivative of the dominant ideology of the slave era that was created to maintain black women s subordination. The matriarch stereotype is presented as a domineering, aggressive, masculine, and fiercely independent black woman whose forceful nature emasculates and demoralizes black men to the point that they abandon their families (Newsome, 37). This image functions to devalue, exploit, and subjugate African American women through an idealized wielding of power that is in no way supported by the actual power structures of America (Newsome, ... This stereotype has permeated American society for decades and continues to influence the world s view of black women through television, cinema, and virtually every other form of media. Anger is a universal emotion that is experienced throughout the lifespan of every person, yet it is often seen as a definitive aspect of black women s personalities and identities as human beings. Behaving in an assertive and outspoken manner would usually be seen as a reflection of strength and intelligence, but for black women, it is viewed as trenchant and domineering (Walley Jean, 69). This model is one of the most widely used models within the field of addiction treatment initially developed to describe the process of adopting any healthy behavior. Motivational interviewing shares much in common with the trans theoretical or Stages of Change Model of behavior change. Although not universally endorsed, the trans theoretical model holds that at any given time, a person is at a particular stage in relation to behavior change (Harvard Mental Health Letter, July 2008). The five Stages of Change are identified as: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance. A client in the precontemplation stage doesn t believe that her or his current behavior is a significant problem and doesn t intend to change the behavior anytime in the near future. In the contemplation stage, a client begins to see that the behavior is a problem and considers making a change but is ambivalent about doing so because she or he also sees reason to keep things as they are. A client in the preparation stage has decided to make a behavioral change and has a specific plan for doing so in the near future. In the action stage, a client carries out a behavioral change plan and begins making the desired change. Finally, in the maintenance stage, a client has made the behavioral change and works to avoid relapsing into the original behavior. Throughout all stages, motivational ... The only source of disagreement lies within how one achieves happiness and what happiness really means. The authors within the book Pursuing Happiness have their own meanings of happiness and what it takes to achieve happiness. Topics such as: what happiness is, what brings happiness, what role does money play in happiness, etc. In this first discussion, we see what the some of the authors have to say about the meaning of happiness. Someone such as his Holiness the Dalai Lama would argue that happiness is having peace and satisfaction within one s mind. As a tibetan monk, he believe that happiness occurs within the self (Dalai Lama and Cutler 23). In contrast, Thomas Jefferson would explain that happiness is actually the opportunity to freely choose one s path within life. Freedom, in eyes, would be the embodiment of freedom (Declaration of Independence). In would also argue that happiness stems from the feeling of self worth, that you have a place within this world. As we see here, the true meaning of happiness all depends on the person. There is no right or wrong answer because we each perceive happiness in a different manner. This is important because it also means that there are different opinions in which someone can achieve happiness. Memories of his reasons for flight and sad recollections of the memory of Jim Conklin, the tall soldier, mirror the episodes mentioned in Crane s second novel. Studies have shown that the source ... Many of the men who witnessed the events that occurred on this battlefield came from this town and served as sources of inspiration for Crane s final draft (website). Despite his evident utilization of these sources, Crane purposefully failed to mention the actual battle in his publication of The Red Badge of Courage. As a novel that aspired to be a psychological portrayal of fear, neglecting the historical framework became an intentional stylistic technique without which the underlined theme would inherently have been lost. Had Crane concretized Henry s experience with a named battle, the reactions to the novel would have altered considerably. Inevitably people would associate imagery from the actual battle with The Red Badge of Courage, a process that would ultimately shift the perspective from Henry s experience to the war itself. Crane avoided these types of reactions by allowing the battle to remain nameless in the narrative. The website quotes a more practical reason stating, none of the characters in the novel certainly not lowly privates like Henry Fleming would have known that the battle they were fighting in was to be called Chancellorsville. Civil War reports and memoirs reveal that the men fighting the war very seldom knew where they were, as they often fought on unfamiliar territory and had infrequent communication with field commanders. (As in Red Badge, the regiments often knew only rumors.) By keeping the battle anonymous ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In my opinion, that is the main purpose of dishonesty tests. Every single manager wants an employee that they feel they can trust. However, a disadvantage is that some of these tests are expensive and since Jennifer has a small business than these tests are a bit out of her league. Once in a while she can use those tests, but is not something that can be done every time she wants to hire somebody. Backgrounds checks are the most effective ways to separate theft prone people from the ones that are not. With these types of tests Jennifer can differentiate which individuals are trustworthy. When an employee is caught stealing or in the process of stealing products, merchandise and/or cash that individual should be fire immediately. Jennifer would have to make an immediate decision as to call the police or handle the matter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Gone Baby Gone Analysis The following analysis is done on the 2007 film Gone Baby Gone , directed by Ben Affleck and adapted from the novel by Dennis Lehane. The movie is based in Dorchester, Massachusetts where two Boston private investigators Patrick Kenzie and his partner and girlfriend Angie Gennaro are hired to find the child of Helene McCready, Amanda, who was abducted from her home one night while her mother was off using drugs with her boyfriend. After a two month investigation it is discovered by investigator Kenzie that the police captain Jack Doyle had abducted the child with the aid of Amanda s uncle Lionel McCready and police detective Remy Bressant to protect and remove Amanda from the drug addicted mothers care. Captain Doyle s own daughter was killed years prior to the incident which likely contributed to the decision to abduct the child. For the purposes of this paper, we will not be investigating Captain Doyle s presenting problems and rather focusing on the issues of the child s abduction and the ramifications on her developmental processes as well as briefly reflecting upon the moral dilemma Patrick Kenzie faces at the climax of the story. The psychological perspectives studied throughout this coursework have examined mental health presenting from a social environment and not simply from the biological and individual systems in which the individual is concerned. Lateral movement from negative and unhealthy environments to those of more stable and predictable environments do not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The use of animal testing is used in medicine, cosmetics and for educational purposes and it is immoral and unnecessary when we have advanced technologies that can replace these harmful methods. I have been able to find many helpful sources that have given me a substantial amount of information related and in connection with my topic. Scholarly sources were harder to come by, but I was able to find an abundance of non scholarly sources. I think this is due to the fact that this is a current issue and although finding scholarly data is possible, non scholarly data presents more in depth and current results that have either not yet been written about or that governmental associations try to hide from the public. As I further my research, I hope to find more scholarly sources. I would like to broaden my search terms and maybe try searching for sources in other databases using the keywords cruelty free as well as further my search in discovering the full process of animal testing within medical science, cosmetics and in educational facilities and what laws are in place for animal rights and laws pertaining to experimenting with animals in different regions. I d also like to find a source that goes in more detail about the alternatives to animal testing as well. This is something that I really need because it is an important part of my thesis and paper. I was surprised by the massive numbers of animals that are manipulated, abused and murdered per year. It was also surprising to me that animals used for testing and experimentation are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act. I feel as if I m just scratching the surface ...
